  1. Yes I saw that - I think at that point I would be off to FreeNAS - it's not worth that much to me.
  2. Thanks for the info - and agree about the need for offsite. This is my 'interim' that is largely backups of a few (albeit onsite) desktops. Next step possibly an install at the end of the garden (Internet here being sub 2Mbit)
  3. Hi, I have an old 4.5.6 install on very noisy but 'proper' 3 disk 1U server that now needs to live beside my desk, rather than in the (distant, soundproofed) data room. It seems sensible to migrate this install to more appropriate hardware - I have various old HP Microservers lying around for example. Is it as simple as moving the drives and USB key across, or am I being optimistic? Will there be a licensing issue on this very old system (not adverse to paying - its good value!!)
  4. I think I have this correct in my head, but a 'yes you are correct / no you are mad' answer from someone would be appreciated. My intention is to use my unRaid box in a 'shared' environment where work colleagues are on the same 192.168.x.y subnet. With the the free/basic unRaid there can be no real authentication, and everyone will have read/ write access to everything on the box, once they know / guess the IP (or browse and see the server) (correct?) If I move up to either of the paid models, I will be able to assign, via the unRaid webGUI, a user name and password to each share (by means of creating users?) so that only those people that I give the username and password to will be able to connect. I can create multiple shares with differing credentials, in order that I can share 'office documents' but leave private 'last summers holiday' (correct?) I'm fairly sure I have this right, but want to be sure before I go down a blind alley! Thanks in advance.
  5. Where in the world are you, and what capacity would you need?
  6. My 'built from leftovers' server is having a few problems (see threads elsewhere, but basically slow sync and crashing on writes), so based on the assumptionyou can't all be wrong, and the unRaid is actually good stuff, I'm assuming its my hardware that's the issue, specifically compatibility, as the actual parts are brand new drives, and the remains of a Windows server that ran for two years before early retirement. The memory Memtest's fine, and the drives (1.5Tbyte Samsung) show no errors. Specifically I want to replace the motherboard with a new one, ideally 6 SATA (I will only need this many drives), and ideally socket 775 (I have a half reasonable CPU). The Supermicro board SUPERMICRO MBD-C2SEE-O seems ideal and widely recommended, but completely unavailable here in the UK (unless you know better??) Is there an equivalent Asus / Gigabyte that is a 'known good' that people are using that would meet my requirements above, that I can purchase easily online here in UK (OK, I can check that bit) ? My trawl of the forums seems to suggest that Intel based NIC is the key recommendation, but then the Supermicro board has a Realtek! Suggestions please people! (Thanks in advance)
