  1. One other thing I noticed (although not probably related to this VM specifically) is that after enabling the network bridge the MAC address of my network card has changed.

This meant all of my devices that used to send WOL packets to the tower to switch it on didn't work until I realised what the issue was and updated them.

  2. Yes you need a video card (otherwise how would you output Kodi to a TV or Monitor?).

If you are creating a folder on your cache drive to store the VM and its data then yes set that share to cache only so that it is not moved to the array.

  3.

    2.  You do need some kind of usb keyboard attached to go through the initial configuration.

I am still baffled by this as I do not have this same issue.  I am able to use the Kore app right away (no USB keyboard needed).  Still trying to figure out why some folks are having this issue.

When openElec first starts it takes you through initial configuration, one step of which is giving it a hostname I seem to recall.  Therefore if you don't press next, next, next on these options it isn't on the network until you do??

  4. The idea behind this is that you have a physical monitor or tv connected to your unraid graphics card that you have passed through to the VM.

Therefore you watch Kodi on that monitor or TV.

You would control Kodi via an app on a phone or tablet as described in the support thread.

  5. Just wanted to say I downloaded and configured the openElec template today (my first VM) and its working fine. :)

I did hit some gotchas though, which either I missed from the instructions or maybe are missing from the instructions.

    1.  When creating the VM you need to have "advanced view" enabled to see the "config folder" field.  I missed setting this and although openElec started I had various error messages on screen!

    2.  You do need some kind of usb keyboard attached to go through the initial configuration.  Basically Next, Next, Next will do it to get openElec on the network.  After that Kore will work.

    3.  I had not enabled the bridge in network settings but luckily spotted a reply in this thread pointing to that.  Kore would not detect my openElec Kodi until I had enabled the bridge and chosen br0.

    4.  I had both my vga monitor AND HDMI connected to my AMD graphics card.  This screwed up display of openElec to my TV and had me scratching my head for a bit.  The display was off centre to the left.  Unplugging the vga monitor and restarting openElec fixed the issue.

Other than that all seems to be working well!  Can't believe how easy you made this for us  :)

  6. Hi all, not sure if this is specifically an unraid problem or a hardware issue.

I've just updated the bios on my asrock m/b (see sig for hardware details) and now my IBM BR10i card does not appear to be being detected in unraid (I've got lots of missing devices which match to the drives on the sas card).

I've also noticed that the card does not appear to POST on bootup although I've read that can happen if there isn't enough option rom space in the bios?

The light is showing on the BR10i so its "active".

Although I suspect this must be a bios issue - can anyone have a look at my syslog and see if there is anything obvious in there?

  7. Can someone tell me where I set a share to be "cache only" ?

Is it the "Use cache disk: = ONLY" ?

For some reason after my upgrade the mover has tried moving files from what I had previously set as a cache only share.

Yes that is the right setting. If those shares have already been moved you should find them on the other drives and either move them back to cache or delete them.

OK thanks, this setting does not seem to have been preserved as part of the upgrade process.

Did you copy the config/shares folder? That is where these settings would be, one .cfg file for each share you have configured (any share that you didn't configure wouldn't have one).

Ohhh I see... I think either that bit is missing from the guide or I missed it..!  I'm sure the guide said not to copy any folders at all from the config folder.  <runs off to check>

I presume then the actual shares themselves are defined in one of the other XMLs?

unRAID automatically makes shares of any folders at the root of cache or any array drive. If you have configured a share, it will also have a .cfg file in config/shares folder. If you don't configure it unRAID gives it defaults, some of which are "use all disks" and "use cache: yes" (not only). It worked this way in V5 also.

Thanks for your help - it looks like I missed this step as it is actually there in the guid  :-[

I'll tell you what confused me though - I initially thought I was having issues writing to my cache drive (ssd) at a slow speed of around 60MB/s (I saw 100MB/s previously).  However this means that I was actually writing to the array at that speed instead!!  Thats double what I ever used to see writing to the array..  :o

  10. Well I updated today from v5 to v6 following Joes wiki guide.  I went down the route of formatting the USB and copying back only needed files and the array started up fine.

I then installed sonaar and sabnzbd dockers (converting from using plugins previously) and after a bit of head scratching around paths managed to get both working.

Many thanks to all involved - new interface is really slick  :)

  11. what have you got as your config directory?

my install directory is:  /usr/local/Sonarr  (think this was the default)

    and config directory: /mnt/cache/apps/Sonarr/AppData

I notice you have changed your install directory to somewhere else... so not sure if this is the issue?

  12. The only downside to Sonarr seems to be that it expects your server to be on 24x7.  If this isn't the case (as I switch mine off overnight) then it can easily miss a task to update series which only runs every 12hrs.

If you don't notice this and manually update you could be missing episodes without realising.

Other than that it is leagues ahead of sickbeard.

  13. The container boots well and communicates with my mysql database, but when I access the kodi webserver: (IPADDRESS:8080) The Movie tab shows the DVD covers correctly, but the TV Tab shows no images at all. No such problems with other kodi machines in my house.

    See Pic attached:

    Any ideas?

Thanks a million for working on such a great docker container idea.

  14. Without a cache you are writing directly to the shares and therefore updating parity as you go.  I'd say around 20MB/s as about right - at least thats similar to what I remember seeing before using a cache drive.

With a cache drive in theory it should be a simple network transfer directly to the drive.  In my case I see around 50MB/s on average to a WD green drive 5400rpm (gigabit wired).  Obviously the cabling is capable of more so I've always assumed it was the slow WD drive that was slow.

Would be interesting to see what other people see when transferring to a cache drive, but in theory in this case you should see the same speeds you saw previously on freeNAS.

  15. I haven't made the move to v6 yet but am excited by all of the work around virtualisation and docker!  I've been thinking about my strategy in consolidating a number of other machines/applications all to my unraid server but came up with a question:

If I wanted to use a docker of say sickbeard and run that traffic thru a VPN (which would require openVPN probably) how would that be achieved?  It would only be that one app i'd want external traffic running thru a VPN - other apps would not use the VPN.

Is this possible using docker?  If so, how?

  16. Hi there how difficult would open VPN server and SQL be to install?

Open vpn seems better fit for running on a firewall,  installed directly on pfsense,  Ipcop,  smoothwall, etc.  To me open vpn on a firewall is a way better place than on a server running media and download apps.

That depends whether you want your download apps to go via the VPN or not.  Ideally I'd like to be able to have certain downloads go via a VPN and others not.  The multiple VM setup seems like an ideal way to do this from what I can see?
