  9. ok, i had to shutdown the server yesterday, power outage, ups kept it live while i loged in, stoped, and shutdown. After starting back up, it started a parity sync. Odd i thought, but meh, it had been 2-3months since i last did one, and it was already 20% though by the time i realised, so i let it go. Now i've receieved i belive 1 parity sync error and 121 parity disk errors, if i'm reading it right. Would like it if someone could check for me. If the 121 errors, are disk errors i'll pull it out and check the cable on the parity drive, well i'll replug all the cables, and run another parity?
  10. So I'm going to need more storage before long... recently bought a 2tb external to keep me out of trouble, so should be ok for the time being, but still need to start considering my options. My case is full atm 12 hdds 3 x 4 hdd cages in it, and no more space, apart from laying them on the bottom of the case. So my first thoughts are either to get a bigger case. and either 1 replace current case, 2 do a whole new build for it, and have 2 servers, 3 just put a power supply in and somehow try and get longer cables to run over to the other case. Will need more pci sata cards as well. 8 on current board and a 4xpci for my 12 drives. (ps what are peoples thoughts on them sas card things?), 4 start replacing some of the smaller drives with bigger drives. have 3 750s and 4 1tb, that could be swaped out, but then what to do with the older smaller drivers. seems like a waste, unless i can get some decent money for them selling 2nd hand... which i kind of doubt. So after opinions on what other people have done, when they have gotten to this point?
  11. Hi, have just run preclear for the first time on a couple new 2tb drives. had them running simultaneously, and the difference the report gave was a fair bit, especially the g-sense, drive most of been dropped at some point by the looks of it? still says it passed though. 12. Are there any problems changing from ide to ahci. as far as causing problems with data corruption or anything? My boards been in ide for some time now, from memory ahci used to cause problems? Remember you added a thing to disable the ncq at least anyway.
  13. Well I just tested this, connected a couple more power and sata cables, getting everything prepped for the new drives this afternooon. And while i was doing all that i pulled the battery and turned the power off, to simulate what would happen. When i turned it back I, i was hit by the gigabyte logo thing which is normal disabled... so first thought was buggar, but then after that it presented a menu with something like cmos error (can't remember exactly what it said but anyway), it had a list of default and last known good config, and a few others that you could save, in the save cmos to bios thing that i did. It was defaulted at last known good with 15sec count down.. let it go and bam restarted with all the previous settings, with all the extras that i have disabled, re-disabled. So i'm not going to have to sacrifice the good asus board in my main I also ran the full surface scan on the parity drive using the samsung utiltiy last night.. and it came back clean.. so hopefully it was just a glitch.
  14. that disk has 47 reallocated sectors. Nothing too bad, but watch it in the future and if the number increases, constantly, replace the drive. Joe L. as in bad sectors? have pulled the server out and hooked upto my monitor, and ran the samsung diag tools just ran the short test, i'll do a full surface scan on it tonight when i goto bed, but it passed the quick test. on another topic from yesterday about the hpa thing, i updated the bios and it gave the option to disable it, plus i did a save cmos to bios thing.. so hoping that fixes the part about it coming back in the event of battery going flat that was commented about

  16. i'm in the same boat as your mazma, was discussing it last night, if you want to check my thread labeled "few questions" yes that hdparm will get rid of it.. the problem is, if the hpa isn't disabled, it will just be re created. weather your option of setting it to dual bios has indeed disabled it.. well i don't know. i'll do that fdisk for you as well bjp edit: here ya go Disk /dev/sdg: 1500.3 GB, 1500300828160 bytes 1 heads, 63 sectors/track, 46512302 cylinders, total 2930275055 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdg1 63 2930275054 1465137496 83 Linux Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.[\code]
  17. Hi, i ran an unmenu verify but don't correct over night, and it's returned 0 errors, but has spat out 48 disk errors on the parity drive. Now from what i can tell from the system log it looks as though the errors occurred towards the end for the drive, so I'm guessing it's not a cable problem? I'd imagine if it was the cable the errors would of been more frequent then just a few dozen blocks near the end together. So i'm guessing it's physical? Anyway before i get to carried swapping cables, i'll check what you experts say. I've attached the system log starting from last night, would be too big to attach the whole thing as it's been up for a few weeks. if more is needed let me know. Thanks abridged_syslog.txt
  18. god damit.. so 4.7 wont work with a hpa in place period?
  19. just download the M/B manual and went through the bios settings in the manual, and couldn't find any reference to the hpa in it, must of been a different board i saw it .. so does that mean if i get rid of it off the drive with hdpam, it will just come straight back after a reboot?
  20. pretty sure i did notice it and disable it already awhile ago, i'll have to pull it out and hook up a monitor to it to check
  21. This is wrong. New drives are not zeroed by the manufacturer. A new drive could be totally full of ones. There are no rules or standards for the content of new drives. They could be filled jpegs of Lena for all we know. The reason that none of your new drives were cleared is because they we added as parity drives. The parity drive does not need to be cleared because it is written completely when parity is calculated. Did you reuse any of the parity drive you replaced in unRAID? These drives would have to be cleared before they could be formatted. yes the old parity drives became data drives, and unraid never cleared them at that stage either edit: just checked my system log and that hpa error is in it. Feb 9 20:32:46 Server kernel: ata7.01: HPA detected: current 2930275055, native 2930277168 (Errors)
  22. thanks Joe. I just read your posts between yourself and peter in the 4.7 thread about the HPA problem he had.. i'm going to do that myself now, in preparation for the upgrade. After everyones posts it does look like the fact that the drives i previously added replacing the parity, and not being cleared by unraid or myself manually, the fact they were new and didn't actually need to be zeroed anyway, was just the fact that i didn't give them a burn in to check for possible problems, and since they've had a decent work out by now anyway, probably not really worth clearing them now after all this time. So i'll just leave them for now. but i will definatly be running it for the 2 new drives I'll be getting. Joe if you could just confirm that this command is still the best/right one for me to use on them, that would be great, you've updated it so much recently with new tags.
