  1. I was wondering how you guys handle/copy your files say from a windows pc to your unraid server. Currently i'm doing that by going to Network place (in windows vista), there i copy and paste things using teracopy Do you guys use a telenet connection (say with puty) to copy things? Also to organize maps and stuff... how do you guys do this?
  2. Joe-L, all my disk got a jumper right away... (coming out from the box) not one disk has got a jumper after partitioning it, so strange thing.. so i need to this 1) restart server (or you mean, i have to unplug the powercord to the harddrive?) 2) open telnet session and typ "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb count=8" 3) fdisk -l /dev/sdb 4) retry preclear So nothing is wrong with my disc? How come it responded before, and then all of a sudden it doesnt anymore? Is this cause i closed telnet session? (i did use screen though)
  3. i bought a new 20ears drive, jumpered it and got this message is something wrong with my new disk?
  4. No, starting at 64 is better. then why put a jumper on new disks? cause joe says "W jumper they start @ 63"
  5. and what about during preclear? safe to play movies from it?
  6. +1 In my case, i could switch the unjumpered used harddrive for a new unused unjumpered one.. so im gonna jumper it right away and preclear it so no issues for me then but what i would like to know whats the difference in starting at 64 or 63?
  7. Is it safe to stream media from the array when i'm checking parity?
  8. after reading these 15 pages thread, its not clear to me some say not, some must maybe make this a sticky and be clear guys - For brand new 20ears drives (not used before, no format before): Use jumpers yes or no? - For used 20ears drives (has been used in pc before, so formatted before): Use jumpers yes or no? , if yes, how to do? just put it on, or is there a path to follow? What does jumpering actually do? i've read its accessing part 63 (but in real its part64) but, what does that mean? just slower speed reading the drive? If you jumper used unjumpered drives, what will happen in the worst case scenario?
  9. I've read that its is strongly recommend to place a jumper on WD 20 ears drives (new ones) i 've done this with my 2 new drives (one is data1 now, second is about to be the parity drive) I'm currently copying from a third wd 20ears drive which is full of data, to the data1 after that i want to add that drive to the array as data 2 the drive has currently 2 partitions ext2/3 so what should i do? i think about this: - remove the partition (its mounted in my vista machine right now, remove it there) - format the drive as fat32? - move the hardware to the server, and put a jumper on 7-8? (or not?, cause i sometimes read id better not once its used) - preclear the drive - add to the array
  10. maybe for new members make the wiki explanations here on this forum?
  11. If you are copying the data over a 100mbit ethernet connection then 11 or 12 MB/s is the fastest you can get. What ext2/3 driver did you install in Vista to mount the drive? ext2fsd? yes its 100mbit for now... i have to buy a gigabit switch very soon lol and yes; its ext2fsd
  12. I would be tempted to try connecting it directly again now that it's worked on the vista machine. well its copying now, so no need to interrupt that anway.. after that, i will plug it back into my server but not for snap so should i -a that drive again on snap, so its out of the list? i think in future i will plug in now and then an usb external drive, so i might keep snap installed... hopefully that will work then..
  13. i've taken the drive outside the server, plugged it into my vista pc (downloaded ext2/3 driver for vista), and using teracopy its now copying to my unraid data disk i thought it would go faster; at least 20MB/s but i think in some way teracopy is holding back i dunno why
  14. First of all, what is the filesystem of that external drive that you are trying to mount? From your posts it is not ext2 and probably not ext3 either. You need to know the filesystem first if Linux is not autodetecting it when you try to mount it. actually it is ext 2/3 but i've solved the problem on my own, not like i wanted to but hey.. its copying now at 11 MB/s thats a bit more than the earlier 2MB/s (from the dune) its also no external drive but an internal sata wd 20ears i've taken the drive outside the server, plugged it into my vista pc, and using teracopy its now copying to my unraid data disk i thought it would go faster; at least 20MB/s but i think in some way teracopy is holding back i dunno why
  15. well i got problems too anyone can help , look at http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5904.165
  16. it didnt mount yeah same error so what now? this really is annoying trying for days now to copy 2tb (over network is way too slow..., would take 14 days! cause of the dune) the only thing i did with that hard drive is using this dune_service_make_system_storage_on_hdd_partition.dsf Reformats am empty HDD to two partitions, and initializes System Storage on one of these partitions, w/o reinstalling the firmware. NOTE: Using this service on 1.0/2.0 models will correctly initialize System Storage, but will not install Extra Applications; Extra Applications can be installed later by updating/reinstalling the firmware. NOTE: The HDD intended to be reformatted by this service must be empty and must contain just single partition or no partitions at all (and this HDD must be the only such a HDD attached to the player). If it is not empty or contains several partitions, reformat it first (e.g. using the player built-in format function: choose HDD in the main menu, press INFO RC button, choose "Format Disk"). NOTE: This service reformats the HDD to two partitions (one using 2GB and second using the rest of HDD), and initializes the first 2GB partition as System Storage. The second partition is NOT formatted by this service; if you want to format it (and you probably do), you can format it e.g. using the player built-in format function: choose the HDD in the main menu, press INFO RC button, choose "Format Partition"). i can do this though, but i would still have 2 partitions i think dune_service_deinit_system_storage.dsf Deinitializes an already attached System Storage. The currently attached System Storage becomes the usual storage that can be accessed and browsed via the player menu in the usual way. NOTE: After deinitializing System Storage, the resulting storage will typically contain various system files (will not be empty). To reinitialize this storage as System Storage again, you will need first to delete all these files or reformat it. site: http://dune-hd.com/firmware/usb_flash_drive/ i hope you or someone else can help me out... i really hate this , anyway thx for all your help tonight
  17. next to sdb2 it theres a button create reiserfs on /dev/sdb2
