  3. Yes, I've just been through all this, mine were non-array sata disks but same principle. To copy directly to a specific disk in the array: cp -av /mnt/disk/SNAP-SHARE-NAME/* /mnt/diskNUMBER/ or To copy to a user share cp -av /mnt/disk/SNAP-SHARE-NAME/* /mnt/user/SHARENAME/ I think that should do it, execute the commands from terminal, either on your UnRAID box or use Putty from your Desktop/Laptop. There's a few different ways to do it, but that's the way I used. Worked alright for me. EDIT - trurl has posted another method, which thinking about it may well be easier. If you can't get to the command line in UnRAID (ie - you're using it headless) then I thoroughly recommend Putty for windows, but there is also versions for Linux as well.
  4. Where are you based? A lot of people including myself use M1015 based cards. They come from various manufacturers and require flashing the firmware so the disks are presented to UnRAID as JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) Might be helpful if you told us which country you're in.
  5. Well done, what did you end up with in your conf file in the end. I had various conf files to try, but the one I posted in the other thread was the first I tried and it worked, so never got around to trying any others....

  8. I'm going to say three words to you that I normally reserve only for my wife..... You were right! Tried a slightly different ddclient.conf and hey presto, updated my DNS immediately. Good work Capt.
  9. I haven't seen any updates in my DNS yet, but there's still a possibility that my conf isn't correct I suppose. Sure when smdion has a look we'll know a bit clearer. Sorry I couldn't help. It does start a lot of instances doen't it!
  10. So how did you copy your conf file to the correct location, I'll give it a go and see if it works, would prove your theory as well as solve my problem.
  11. I'm also having trouble getting ddclient to work using namecheap as my host. Spent an hour on the livechat support with them and my .conf is good so would love a bit more info on this one. I currently have my /config mapped to /mnt/cache/appdata/ddclient If I start the ddclient with no conf it creates the sample one in my appdata/ddclient folder and I then edit it, and my log when I restart shows. *** Running /etc/my_init.d/firstrun.sh... Using existing config file. *** Running /etc/rc.local... *** Booting runit daemon... *** Runit started as PID 9 Setting up watches. Watches established. So I assumed that meant it was using my conf file, but it would explain my problem if the above is correct. Unfortunately I can't work out how to navigate to /etc/init.d/ within the container to look and check. Got so far as docker ls but cannot work out how to browse the docker file system to check.

Hi CHBMB, replies as follows:- ok so the protocol traffic is dht and other overheads from torrent traffic, i have seen no successful connections whilst the tunnel is down, and no uploads/downloads of data, i have analysed the data using wireshark and it looks like nothing gets through but please let me know if you see otherwise. i saw i had defaulted to https for the webui link in unraid docker ui, now changed to http, although im sure some people will moan that the link doesnt work cos they are using https I thought that it was probably nothing but just wanted to check. Oh, by the way, when I click WebUI I get taken to the HTTP link, but I'm using HTTPS (Only joking - I don't mind as it's rare that I use the links from the Unraid page, so whatever you go with is cool by me.
  13. I have absolutely no idea if the HPA issue is still a current thing or not. I vaguely remember having a problem with it on my first server build but that was over three years ago.
  14. Great Work! Just set it up and it's working like a dream. Only query I had is that I killed the PID for OpenVPN and in the web interface I still got protocol traffic although my download and upload did indeed drop to zero. Is that expected? Here's the relevant part of the screen attached to my post. EDIT: Just noticed one other thing, I I go to the UnRAID WebGUI docker tab and click on Deluge icon then WebGUI I get the correct web address other than it's HTTPS rather than HTTP and won't connect. Once I change it to HTTP it works fine.
  15. Passthrough seems to be the hot topic on the board at the moment, I for one, am grateful for the help. Does anyone else think it's worth posting success +/- failures in this thread as a reference for others. Personally I find it much easier to persevere with something once I know it is possible, I know hardware configs will vary a lot, but at least it forms a basis. If anyone else can think of any relevant info to include then feel free. At the moment it seems Graphics adapters and TV-Tuners are the two main groups and there isn't a great deal of information out there. I'll start: Motherboard: Asrock H77 Pro4-M CPU: Core i5-3470S Device: TBS 6285 DVB-T2 Quad Tuner OS: WHS2011 & Windows 7 Machine: Q35 (Both OS') Notes: Succesfully passing through Live TV using Argus TV
  16. Personally, I'd go for the Asus board because it has 4 x PCI-E slots versus 2xPCI-E and 2xPCI on the Gigabyte board. The Asus board supports Vt-D for virtualisation BUT you would need a different CPU that also supports Vt-D. You could get the Asus board & your original CPU and if you wanted to experiment with virtualisation at a later date then upgrade your CPU. Someone else may have a different opinion.
  17. 1GB per TB is what is recommended for FreeNAS, and I seem to recall it requires ECC RAM & Motherboard. Which makes the hardware a fair bit more expensive. I think that most of us on here run on far less memory than that rule, my last UnRAID box had about 20TB on it and I was using 4GB. My storage hasn't really increased since then, but I now have 32GB because I got a good deal on it and I'm playing around with virtualisation more, but that's another issue. If you're new to NAS and storage in general I would stick with UnRAID, and I've tried WHSv1, WHS2011, Transparent Flexraid and have just come back to UnRAID because it's simple, easy and I trust it. My advice is take things one step at a time. I personally think a cache drive is pretty much a necessity, however that's largely because of how I use it, my cache drive is a regular HDD but I do have an SSD mounted outside my unraid pool. 1. Get an array up and going. 2. Look at plugins and dockers, personally I think dockers are likely to be the way forward and install one at a time and take things slowly. 3. Once you've got this far then think about what else you want to accomplish, odds are, someone on the board has done it before and they'll be info around, and it's a friendly community with lots of help around. In answer to your questions: Parity acts as an "insurance policy" if you like, it insures you against the loss of one data disk, it needs to be at least the same size or bigger than any of the other data drives (not cache) It can be upgraded easily for a bigger one at any point and the old drive can indeed be used in the array as a data disk. Your hardware looks good to me for a decent NAS. As far as I can tell, you wouldn't be able to virtualise with it, other than Dockers and possibly VirtualBox, but that may not be something you need or want. It might be better to have told us what you want to do with your server then we could have recommended a direction to take, but I can say for certain that your hardware is a LOT better than I had on my first UnRAID server, I can't remember exactly what I had other than the motherboard was the Supermicro C2SEA (LGA775) with 4GB RAM and some sort of Intel Core 2 Duo. UnRAID ran fine on that.. I still use the Realtek onboard NIC and can't say I've noticed any problems, why don't you just try and see, can always add in an Intel NIC at a later date.

I'd second that, my desktop and my Unraid box are sitting next to one another and both plugged into the same monitor via different outputs, the only time I actually switch onto the the input for my Unraid box is when I need to access the bios. Otherwise I just use Putty along with screen for everything terminal related, otherwise GUI/Unmenu.

  21. I don't hate windows, well wasn't a fan of the direction the Win8 series took, but with Classic Shell installed it's good. It's just maintaining a Windows Server was fairly labour intensive, whereas, when I ran UnRAID previously I think I went over 6 months without a reboot. I can't quite see myself ever leaving the Microsoft ecosystem entirely, probably as I'm so familiar with it so can do a lot without really thinking whereas Linux requires a bit more thinking on my part, so for that reason my desktop is still primarily windows although I do have a second SSD in there with Linux Mint. However for the job I want it to do, UnRAID ticks the boxes. I'm not too bothered what the base install is in terms of Slackware or Arch although I do see some good arguments on the issue, In fact off the top of my head the only thing I'd like to see in UnRAID and am a little disappointed hasn't yet surfaced is dual parity, or multi array setups. But I can wait. Going back to what I was saying about the community, I always felt a bit alone using WHS, whereas coming back here is a lot more active and more is developing. WHS2011 is going to be end of life next year I think, and I'm not prepared to spend a significant chunk of cash on the Windows Server range. I liked the internet access to my Server from anywhere in the world with the homeserver.com domain and the automatic dynamic DNS, but I'm a bit wiser now and think I can accomplish similar things under my own steam. Although I do understand that UnRAID has never been designed to be open to the web. I like the feeling of control I have with UnRAID, I feel like I "know" what happens and no security updates are going to come flying over the internet and cause a reboot when I'm not expecting it.
  22. So, I've pretty much finished migrating my storage back to UnRAID. I was using V5.0 up until about a year ago and suffered a MB failure. One of the things I have used my server for is a PVR backend and this isn't easily achieved with the DVB-T2 tuner card I have (TBS6285) it require a media build and drivers installing, neither of which I could do myself and I was very dependent on the good actions of piotrasd. Given that I decided to head towards more familiar terrritory and run a Windows Home Server 2011 build. I thought it would solve all my problems as I am, or maybe, was a Windows guy. Got it installed, along with the programs that I used to use on UnRAID, PVR up and running, but started to hit limitations. Trying to run XBMC just to keep my centralised library updated was a chore, as it won't run as a service, reverse proxy configuration is a confusing minefield, User shares with access permissions, all for my wife and I, I could go on. I pooled my drives with Transparent FlexRAID, and dual parity, even recovered from a disk failure, but one thing I missed, the simplicity and ease of use of the base NAS appliance. Flexraid has a myriad of options, even registering it was somewhat difficult, then I had to get my head around parameters such as SWO, TCQ, OS Caching. It's an impressive product for sure and I'm sure it's technically very very clever, but I don't want to analyse a load of figures I want to plug in and go. Having said that once it was up and running all was well, upgrading was a bit of a hassle. Stop the service, uninstall everything, wait 30 seconds, reboot, reinstall.... I'd always have to refer to the wiki. Over the last year I have had the OS fail on me necessitating reinstalling everything twice. To get everything up and running again would take the best part of a month of effort each night after work well into the early hours. Not denying that it may have been me that caused the OS to fail as I was forced to repartition drives and move user shares to accomodate my setup. The last time it was my fault. I was trying to mount my OS disk in my Win7 machine to get some files off whilst I was working changing some of the hardware. Somehow Win7 changed the partition (I think because I used a SATA to USB3 adapter) This time no more, I popped over to the UnRAID forums to see what was going on.... Wow! Now a lot of progress has been made in the last year or so since I've been away. We're now on a new wave of betas, slow progress as always, but progress none the less. What has impressed me... Well several things: 1. Dynamix Web Gui - Far more professional looking, no longer looks like an amateur project, aesthetics maybe, but impressions count. 2. Dockers - This has made a massive difference to how we can use our machines, plugins still form an important role, I see them as things that are central to the workings of the machine, like SNAP, APC UPS & Powerdown. But webapps like NZBGet are just made to be used in a Docker format as far as I can tell. For sure there are some teething problems but gradually people are getting used to them, we're learning and adapting the way we do things. It's certainly made my life a lot easier getting everything up and running in a way that I understand. 3. Virtualisation - I spent a long time poring over the forums to make a decision between Xen & KVM. In the end I decided to use KVM, purely because it seemed that it was the forum that had the biggest buzz about it and the most activity. I am so impressed with the ability we have now to create a multitude of virtual machines to achieve whatever we want, I'm still working at getting a VM to run a PVR service, not sure if it's possible but it's fun trying, I've got several Linux VMs to try out different distros. I've installed WHS2011 to get my web pages back up until I figure out Apache or Nginx. I'm going to try running pfsense 4. Community - But one thing I had forgotten, arguably the most important benefit UnRAID has, is the community here, it's vibrant, bustling and always a hive of activity, I read threads not necessarily because I know how to answer a question or because I need to achieve the same thing as the poster wants, but because it's interesting to see the different ways people are using the tools we have. The vibe is friendly, with very few arguments or disagreements, there are the old hands helping out those with simple questions, or forging ahead with new plugins, dockers or VMs. So when I came to installing UnRAID I dusted off my trusty USB stick and I can get it booted within a couple of minutes. With dockers and my KVM XML and img files saved I can be up and running again very quickly, it's just so much more "modular" than Windows, where I had to download, install, run things as a service, change the firewall, the import my config files as that was the only thing I could save between reinstall. It's simplicity is what makes it much easier to use. Almost paradoxically it is also what makes it so powerful now, things are fairly independently run, I don't need the pages of notes and saved web pages telling me how to install things and configure them like I did with Windows. Exciting times ahead and I for one am glad to be back. Sometimes you need to find out for yourself that the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side.

  25. This is on my list of things to do, currently I have my docker.img stored on my SSD which is mounted outside of the array and my appdata as a cache only share on a 2TB HDD. I was planning on creating a hidden share called UnRAID_Backup and setting up rsync to copy my VMs and appdata to it automatically once a week. Unfortunately I've never used rsync so there's going to be a bit of a learning curve..
