ok this time it installed, went onto the web gui .. and its the old one? no instructions on your site how to get this one working. I rebooted (after making a change to a share to get something saved) and it is still the old gui any ideas?

At the current time, yes I think from what i have read i would use unraid in one instance on 'basic' as a backup server due to its ability to run disc size mismatches and the easy nature in which to recover data, but for a front end server with masses of storage for videos i think it would have to be a zfsguru for its power,speed of transfer (30gb files sometimes!) and plugin feature sets. best of both worlds at minimal cost's and risk.

so is it impossible to make an unraid software have radi6 (2 parity) ?

As long as you have a device with a unique GUID then the specific .key file limetech issues to you for your license can only be used with that device. Doesn't matter if the device is a sd card reader or a flash drive. The problem is getting a card reader with a unique GUID. Don't know if the GUID can be a human-readable, from the packaging, serial number or not, but I doubt if that is generally the case. The GUID is read by unRAID from the device itself. If you have been booting unRAID from a flash drive in your "trials", you can click on the "flash" link on the main GUI page and it will take you to a page that gives you the GUID of your flash drive. This is what you enter on the order form when you purchase your license, and limetech then gives you a unique Plus.key or Pro.key file for you to put on that specific device that will unlock the additional capabilities. thanks. also, i noticed it was possible to actually re-flash the GUID on certain flash drives too.. although i think once you reach that thinking then unraid isnt for you.. my problem is that i don’t mind paying 2x unraid for $30 each, but in reality i would want the so called 'pro' edition which is a bit rich for just allowing a few more discs, which is $149 .. but unraid is not a backup . so i would need a backup server also with two keys because then i have two usb fault tolerant servers as such or at least something with a faster up time.. and although strictly you could email tom and keep the cost for two servers at $149 it might end up at $300 for that backup key some people advise to get !!! Of course, you only have 1 parity disc the more i investigate this product the less attractive it is becoming :'(

is this a good GUI ? how are gui's able to improve unraid other than aesthetically? can you fork a build with scripts and other bits to make your own unraid (post paying for it of course) seems like tom could benefit from this too..

There is very little choice i.e. a list of one reader that is known to work. Most (as in every one I purchased) doesnt work as the GUID isnt unique. It is the way to go but there needs to be a varity of choices and not one specific model of one specific device but is tom happy with the ability for someone to do this even? Also im assuming is the GUID is not the serial number after checking between two cards just now running though and adapter they had different guid but .... because many SDHC usb adapters present their own serial number regardless of memory card .. THIS would be a better option for most users. Sounds like they are trying too hard to make you pay for a fault down the line btw dont get butt hurt by that comment, its true. There should be a better way.

hasn’t this question already been answered? buy a sd card usb dongle with a id tied to the dongle not the sd card. buy two or three cheap 4gb or 8gb kingston sdhc cards and test them with first with a good disc checker, put identical versions of unraid on two of them and leave the third for a potential future version. what’s the issue with that ? ^ in principle it would be nice to get emailed a key and have an account and move away from the guid model,, im not sure many people would keygen/hack or sell a key for unraid to a product like this, its not photoshop or some AAA pc game etc.. its not expensive as it is and most people intelligent enough and well heeled enough to warrant a server build will probably spend $30 on the software. Hence if you pay and get a key and that same key is used elsewhere you just ask the buyer .. did you share the key? or just block more than 5 uses of the key.. with a registration server taking the amount of times used. finally there is a lot of community content here that people haven’t got paid for .. you give a little, you get a lot back unraid could be even cheaper or even free for home usage but as it grows just have support costs built into the small business server versions etc..

i have no array. i just loaded up the pen, logged in as root: then shut down using ctrl alt delete it presents that message. I just tried a sudo reboot.. and it said the same but just before that it said can mount file system read only Just to get this straight, i have no array im just dipping my toe into the initial boot of the usb, i was wondering if thats a normal message? perhaps my pen has read only status? perhaps because i converted the .zip to .iso it has odd ball folder configurations as i did not use the scripts as there isnt one for linux. im just trying to make sure there isnt any funnies before i start building the array. thanks

I noticed on root login: pressing ctrl+alt+delete to reboot the machine goes through a few processes before shutting down. Just before my box shuts down i get a message Unmounting Remote Filesystem Can't find /in /etc/fstab or etc/mtab then it shuts down normally. is this something that will be an issue come actually creating an array and run the system as normal? Or is that behaviour expected? The pen is default 5.05 and made from a .zip into an ISO as per the instructions on how to make a bootable pen from within linux. thanks

and i accept your apology but you know what? when you run any of the other server builds be it freenas, nas4free,zfsguru etc.. there is an installation even though they run live off the pen initially, its kind of like a setup procedure ... yet with unraid it just feels like its running live with no save file.. perhaps im not making myself clear, im not complaining but the guide you posted doesnt show 'installation' it shows a way to boot live and run from a pen but nothing beyond that ... which is my point .. what IS beyond running on a live pen is there anything? how does the system 'save' my mac/ip/ parity/disc information (from the gui) once i shut down the PC ? I did but not mentioning about any installation isnt the same as describing how its not needed

why not get a usb pen and run a live distro then look for the disc information there? running ubuntu in a vm from windows is only complicating the matter for you. if ubuntu or linux mint fails (which they wont) then try a slackware distro like puppy linux

hi, I got unraid up \\tower on my lan no problem, it sees the disks and everything so far im impressed (if a little concerned at how baron everything is,i mean this is REALLY simple). But there doesnt seem to be an install button ? how does it install or am i right in thinking the usb pen is always run 'live' , if i add discs do changes get automatically written to the usb pen? and if so what happens when i turn off my computer and then turn it back on again? do i always have a grub menu to run without plugins or normal etc... it feels a bit like puppy linux where there would be some sort of save file on the usb but i cant find anywhere on the gui that commits 'Save Session' just wondered.. thanks Megz

I hope this isnt another oddity with Unraid that it needs a mac or windows machine to run a linux server, serving linux clients on the edge your joking though i assume, how many Chinese people use Windows, How many Russian's use Windows, How many Germans use Windows ((yes they too have moved on from Windows quite a bit, their government gave out 1 million ubuntu CD's)) .. Linux/unix/bsd is in everything, unraid,freenas,desktops,andriod phones,esxi .. so yes its not inconceivable that someone may not have access to a windows PC, there are currently over 100,000 million debian users and many more in different flavours.. could one or two or maybe most of them not have Windows? you bet, in fact even dell sell machines with ubuntu on let alone other laptop resellers.. its kind of a big deal now. There is not one good reason for me to run windows in 2014. It is a bloaty, malware ridden, DRM'd, backdoor'd mess and i don’t say that with anger i say that with 15 years of windows client server experience I have followed the instructions and set the flag to Boot but no dice. I have run many things from usb over the years but yea they need some sort of boot menu..

Iam wanting to try out unraid. But I cant get the USB pen to boot. The instruction on the wiki are for a Windows PC or MAC? A lot of people run Linux only (millions actually) and I am one of them. I did see the bit about unetbootin but on installation there was no unraid entry in the menu? I run linux mint (ubuntu base) I have the pen, its fat32 with all the files copied across but how can i make it bootable? I have a usbimagewriter application but that is looking for an ISO. Any help appreciated..
