  1. Hello once again! Right, after watching a tutorial on Youtube I have managed to map one of my Unraid shares to my Linux Mint desktop by creating a mount point, creating a directory, and creating a credentials file on the Linux Mint machine. All I can say is..... What a load of rubbish! If this is what's required in order to gain access to what is a simple user share then I'll go back to Windows! Why? It has taken me an hour to do what would have taken seconds in Windows. The windows machine (In stark contrast) simply presented me with a username and password box when I attempted to access my shares. Once entered, these details then allow me to access EVERY other share on my Unraid Server that have the same user (obviously). With Linux it appears I have to go through the Youtube rigmarole for every share that I want to access! Can somebody please tell me why Linux can't just present me with a credentials box like Windows? I mean, really, what is the point of this Linux approach? Is it supposed to make things more secure? Cheers.
  2. Ahhhh. Any recommendations on the Asus routers? The Netgear 7000 is very quick but only offers Open VPN. Thanks
  3. Hello itimpi. Thanks for that. I'm assuming that this will remove the login details for Unraid from my Windows machine, hence prompting me for them again the next time I try to access the server? Thanks.
  4. Thanks everyone, all good advice. My reason for asking about a stand alone device for VPN was performance/security. I was just wondering how good Unraid/Open VPN was at running a VPN. I had realised that you need a client. As I have all my media on the unraid server, and some of it is important photographs, I just wondered if Unraid running Open VPN was a risk of any sort. I do need/want to be able to access my server content from outside of my home and wondered which was the best solution. I am currently using a cheapo router supplied by my fibre provider (TalkTalk) and it does not appear to have VPN abilities. I thought Unraid and Open VPN might be the way forward? I am not running a business. im just an IT enthusiast with a fairly comprehensive home setup. I did look at a Netgear 7000 router but it used Open VPN and by Netgears own admission, it did not work that reliably? I dont mind spending a hundred or so pounds (Ebay) on a second hand bit of Cisco kit for example if that would do the job reliably. I've recently converted my Unraid server to a Supermicro X10SL7-F mobo which has a spare Ethernet port. I thought i might be able to use this with open VPN? Thanks for your advice, its much appreciated.
  5. Hello. I've just started to install open VPN via Docker on my Unraid server. I then fell at the first hurdle when it wanted settings for Path etc. These were no problem when I installed Plex for example because its obvious where your data is etc. With open VPN however I'm at a loss. Can anybody help please? Next question, and possibly more important, is there a better way to implement VPN. A friend swears by Cisco kit and has mentioned an ASA 5505. or is there some other hardware solution? Would I be better off splashing out on a top tier Draytek router for example? Thanks.
  6. Thanks Sparkly. I'm a complete Linux noob so will have a quick look at this. I'm assuming that this change/modification has to be made/added on the Linux machine? Is that right? Why cant it just ask me for a username and password like Windows does? BTW, Any answers on how I sign back out/retract my user credentials from the windows machine after adding a few folders? Rebooting the machine doesn't work. I suppose I could hide the keyboard when the granddaughter visits but that seems a bit harsh! Thanks.
  7. And to Think I was going to install Win 10 in a few weeks. I cant even get Linux Mint to add a new film folder inside my Movies share. Oh dear.
  8. Hello all. Please excuse this possibly stupid question. Just installed Linux Mint (Latest) on my desktop PC instead of Windows 8.1. I have just tried to add another folder for a new film inside my Movies folder. A message immediately pops up saying "No". The message says the Share is "Read Only" (it is). My Windows machine never had this problem. Any ideas? The Share has a user who has read and write access (me) but the Linux file manager doesn't even ask me to enter any credentials. It just says "NO"! Can anybody help please, I do like this Linux Mint. Update.... I just changed the Movie share user password using the Unraid WebGUI and then attempted to create a new folder from my other Windows machine. i was immediately asked for a user name and password. I entered my share user name and password and bingo, I could add, modify, delete etc. Unfortunately, this now generates another couple of questions in addition to why Linux wont present me with a "share folder" username and password request. First question is this (a bit off topic) is the root username and password purely for accessing the Web Gui? Second question (more important), How do I log back out of my "Movie share" on the Windows machine? It appears that now that I have logged in to the Unraid Server using my new password via the other Windows machine, either the Windows computer or the Unraid server remebers this permanently!! That "Other Windows Computer" is used occasionally by my granddaughter! if she gets into file explorer and navigates to the UnRaid server....... I dont even want to think about it! Thanks,
  9. Hello Ive just installed Plex Media Server and Plexconnect on my Unraid server. That's Unraid Ver 6 release candidate, 64Bit, Pro. All seems well until I try and play large files (ripped Blueray), and then the picture starts to stutter and then the ATV2 falls over and reboots its self. When playing smaller file sizes (ripped DVD or compressed Blueray) things are OK. To prove a point I have substituted a Panasonic Blueray player with a network streaming facility in place of the ATV2 and the larger files play flawlessly! I have a Gigabit Network and wired connections throughout the house so the problem does not lay there. Is the ATV2 just not up to the job ( not enough horsepower)? Would an ATV3 solve the problem? cheers.
  10. Hello. Ive just installed Plexmedia server and Plexconnect on my Unraid server. Im running the latest Ver 6 release candidate 64bit. It's the Paid for Pro Version. It all seems to be working after replacing the default ATV certificates with those from my old Windows Machine. I used to run this system on a win7 machine but have taken the plunge and am now using "Docker". There are 2 problems however:- 1) When I attempt to Access the Plexconnect Web GUI from the Docker tab on UNRAID I get an "Error 404" message and "Cannot display webpage". The suggestion appears to be that I need to log in to access the page??? I really don't understand this as surely the Plexconnect Web GUI option should just take me there? I installed Plexconnect using a repository linked to by Peducharme and apparently forked from Needos version. I cannot see a version linked to by Needo at all. 2) More importantly, when using my ATV2 to display my Media Library from my Unraid Server, things look ok until I go to folder view. At that point the relevant folders appear on my TV screen (Kids, Comedy, Action, etc, etc but with no Folder names actually underneath them until I physically "Click" on a folder. The same happens when I burrow to the next level (Comedy for example) where there are unpopulated boxes for all the movies, but no cover art or film names until I select a particular movie. If I then choose a movie the next screen appears which shows me all the details such as cover art, Genre, film details etc. Whats up here? is this a Plexconnect problem, a Plex Media Server problem, or an Apple TV problem? Kind regards.
  11. Hi Squid, thanks for that. I notice after googling on the net that many others have had this "error" message come up on screen on shutdown. It's as if the system is trying to reload something but cannot find it. Call me picky, but there has to be an answer to this, even though it does not seem to be affecting the system. I don't like things that aren't right and would love to have the answer to this so I can fix it. Thanks.
  12. Well, I seem to have sorted the Power down issue by editing the syslinux file to read "ACPI=ON" instead of off. Don't know how that got changed? Maybe its a default setting in the newer UnRaid ver 6. Anyway, that still leaves the strange message that appears on the console screen just before shutdown and that is "mount: can't find / in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab Anybody any ideas? Thanks, G.
  13. Hello. I wonder if I could trouble you Unraid experts with two quick queries which may actually have one cause? I've been using Unraid for approx 1 year and things have worked well up to now but................... I have recently upgraded to Unraid Ver 6 Pro from version 5 Pro. I have also upgraded the Drives and added some apps (under Ver 5) such as pre-clear, Email, etc. At some point during this adventure the Unraid box has stopped shutting down completely when using the "power down" button in the WebGui. Unfortunately I cannot remember when this stopped working exactly as I placed it on my "To Do" list but it is now really annoying me. This feature worked perfectly at some point!! In an attempt to cure this problem I have renamed and replaced the necessary files on the USB stick so that I get a clean boot and none of the "Extra" packages are loaded. This has been confirmed on screen whilst watching the boot up sequence. Unfortunately Unraid Ver 6.12 halts but will still not shut down the motherboard. Now I am really miffed as it worked before! The only possible pointer I can see for this is upon system halt there is a message left on the display that says "mount: can't find in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab". I cannot remember if this message has appeared now or has been there all along. A trawl of the internet tells me that this is a common message with Unraid (and Linux) users but I have not found an answer. Could somebody please help? Thank you in advance. Modify message

  15. I think your correct. when the pre clears are all finished I will pop in the memory and run the test. It was a strange one, you could almost set your watch to when the transfer would fail. Very odd. just a quick question. I know that all the documentation says that Unraid can run on 1GB of memory, whereas FreeNas seems to want 16GB! is 1GB a realistic figure for Unraid? Does anybody have any experience in this area? I have a known good 4GB stick and 8GB stick laying about. Just wondering which one to use? Thanks.
  16. Just a quick update. Didn't get a chance to do a memory test, but I did swap out the 4 x 8GB sticks and refitted a single 4GB stick at first and then a single 8Gb stick. The file transfers have all completed without incident since I did this. Very strange! The 4 x 8GB sticks were actually a quad channel 32GB set so should not have presented any problem. They were Corsair Vengeance Pro 1600. Anyway, just doing a rebuild and pre clearing 2 x 160GB drives to use in the build together with a 500GB parity drive. Lets see how that performs when its up and running. At the moment I am just trying to make sure that Unraid is a stable and robust system before I go spending money on a 2 pack pro licence. Any happy customers here? Thanks.
  17. Hello bjp999. Errrr, im afraid you have me there. Didn't have time to study the stickies, I'm studying for a Simulator detail tomorrow. More Info. I am using the latest 64 bit build of Unraid, btw I used and formated a fresh USB stick (clean Install) and booted from that. No difference. I am using the free version of Unraid with only 3 drives. I have now removed the 64GB of Corsair memory from the Motherboard slots and have fitted a single 4GB module and rebooted again. The machines are now half way through a second major file transfer without incident. The first transfer from a Win 7 PC to the Unraid Tower and the second back the other way. Not sure what to make of it at the moment. Quite how the memory would make a difference I dont know but nothing else has changed. All cabling and router and switchs are untouched. Im keeping my fingers crossed on this second file transfer which is going like a train. Previous reboots and a new USB Boot device did not cure the problem so I know its not that. Thanks.
  18. Morning. Now I have a real strange problem and don't know where to start. Tried transferring all my movies to the Unraid server yesterday. Have done it before after trying different drives. I have now settled on 3 x 3TB WD Reds. Have used them before (the exact drives) so just swapped them back into the machine. Pre-clearing and parity checking all done by the book. The transfer fails on every sixth movie (folder). A window appears on the donor machine (Win 7) saying "Cannot connect to Tower, check network connections". In the same error box it names the folder being transferred during the failure, and says " Try again, Skip, Cancel". Try again gets you nowhere and keeps displaying the same message despite me ensuring that Network is fine. Skip restarts the transfer but on the next folder. Cancel stops everything. I have changed the router, disconnected any switches, checked cables, etc. I now have a system setup with my main Win 7 PC and the Unraid Tower down in my workshop, and another Win 7 PC upstairs in the house. All transfers between the two Win 7 PC's go like clockwork no matter which way. Any attempt to transfer a large amount of files from EITHER Win 7 PC to the Unraid Tower experiences the same problem with the "Cannot connect to Tower, check Network Connection" message box on the Win 7 machine after every 6th or maybe 7th folder. Dunno what to make of this, cant say I noticed or experienced this during trial Unraid hardware builds in the past week? The network card (Intel) is built into the motherboard and that has not changed? You can almost set your watch to it. The only clue I can find is that the Command line instruction "ifconfig eth0" is showing maybe 280 dropped packets or bits during a typical 55GB transfer. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks.
  19. Many thanks, will have a look at that, I will Google it and see what I get.
  20. Morning all Changed my syslinux.cfg file and added acpi=off to remove all the warnings in my syslog to the effect that ACPI Namespace lookup errors existed. This was after updating the BIOS failed to fix the problem. I am now left with this one "RED" error remaining in the syslog. Please see the excerpt below. I guess if it is red then it must be serious? 21. Flash card reader?? Are we saying we can use a flash card instead of a USB stick? If so, any recommendations such as size, make, type. Thank you.
  22. Thanks Flintlock1 I will try this if the bios upgrade doesn't fix things and will report back. Waiting for a disk pre clear to complete at the mo. Thanks.
  23. Thanks Itimpi. Understand where you are coming from. Thanks flintlock1, that's interesting. So what you are saying is that my WD Reds may well support this function but Unraid will report that they don't. Also, this doesn't appear to be a mission critical feature and that Unraid will work perfectly well without it? Right, if that's all correct, I can move on to the ACPI Namespace errors that are showing up. I am downloading the latest BIOS for the Motherboard now. If that does not fix matters, then I assume that I can turn off the ACPI without hindering or affecting the operation of Unraid?? Thanks.
  24. Thanks for that. As you say, the important thing is make and model. I have noticed over the years a big difference in performance between USB sticks that I have had laying about. I have an "Easy Disk" 1Gb stick here at the mo which has serial and GUID but it will not work reliably with Unraid. OK, I will try one of the Sandisk Cruzers and see if it is any good. Cheers.
