  1. Okay so Rsync is better than CrashPLan for backing up critical data to external drives over USB 3.0 via unRAID, correct? From some quick Googling it looks like Rsync is very much Linux/script dependent (which again, I know zero of). Is there nothing with a GUI? So why is it better than CrashPlan...? Perhaps I should start a new thread on this....
  2. I don't want to back up to the cloud, I want to back up to external drives connected via USB 3.0. Bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. Is there no software / "docker" that allows for scheduled backup to external drives? I have a hard time believing I'm the first person to think of this...
  3. A docking station can work fine, but requires that you manually do the backups and switch disks as needed. The simplest approach (what I use) is another UnRAID server. So Crashplan has no ability to select specific folders and automatically update only changed files? There's nothing? So manually selecting folders and copying/overwriting them is the only "solution"? Somebody should get on that...
  4. My recommendation (as a former WDTV user): 1) Install Plex on your server 2) Buy AppleTV devices for all your TVs 3) Install PlexConnect on your server to allow the AppleTVs to play media from Plex 4) Install the Plex client on your Android devices 5) Gather up all your WDTVs devices and deposit them in the nearest garbage bin (or donate them to friends like I did) 6) Enjoy Plex and wonder how you ever lived without it. Seriously. Watching videos using a WDTV compared to using Plex is like using a quill and ink well to write a letter compared to using a computer word processor. Funny, I quite like our WDTV. Very few complaints. (We're also a no Apple house...lol). Can the ATV play .flac files yet? Sounds like Plex isn't really for me as the WDTV already retrieves media info so other than transcoding to our portable devices (which we really don't use for that) I don't see much need. If anything I'll probably just re-encode stuff for the rare times we need it portable or get the occasional oddball format etc. What are you guys using for a backup solution on unRaid? I just ordered the below dock for just that. Crashplan? Also anyone have experience using version 6's USB 3.0 in that scenario? How's that working? http://www.amazon.ca/Offline-Inateck-External-Function-Tool-free/dp/B00N1MAMB6/ref=sr_1_12?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1421085724&sr=1-12&keywords=usb+3.0+3.5+inch+enclosure
  5. Sure, but then I still need to figure out stuff like this which is a bit over my head: https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/70346-plex-media-server-wdtv-no-streaming/ I'm still not 100% whether I should install Plex as I don't really have a clear idea of how it works with things like my WDTV (or my Android devices for that matter). Like I said. Learning curve.
  6. Yeah.... I've built numerous Windows computers and did basic setup of my QNAP, home network etc but I know pretty much nothing about Linux/programming so there's a bit of a learning curve for me here...lol It's a good thing I like learning new things! A searching I shall go...
  7. Thanks Trurl. Yeah I kind of assumed for my currently pretty basic NAS needs that V6 is probably fine. I'd imagine for guys more on the bleeding edge and using their UR servers like digital Swiss army knives, there's probably more issues with it currently. But you know what they say about assuming... It seems I will have to look in to "docker" as this is the first I've heard of it... Point me in a direction? Is there a "how to"/instructional YouTube vid etc? Yes, one of the three 2TB drives will be a parity drive. Though I've read it's a LOT faster to dictate that AFTER first moving your data over to one of the other drives and letting unRAID sort out the parity after the fact. Absolutely on the backup One of multiple reasons I'm backing everything up on those external 1TB USB drives. ...print server?
  8. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=34094.msg316456#msg316456 I started out months ago with the above hardware thread (thanks again for the help there) and I'm finally moving in to build phase! Here's the final equipment I ended up with (though still waiting on delivery for the CPU, RAM and Flash Drive): -LIAN LI PC-Q25B Case -SILVERSTONE SFX ST30SF 300W PSU -ASUS H87I-PLUS Motherboard -INTEL I3 4150 -SanDisk Cruzer Fit 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Now I have some questions on initial setup... First and foremost, should I install V6 or V5? From what I recall, V6 was supposed to move out of Beta in 3/4 of last year around Oct-Nov. What's the deal there on the delay and consensus on version to install? Is V6 99% there and just sorting out niggling details or is it still a ways off? I'm currently backing up my QNAP mirrored 2X2TB drives on to two separate 1TB drives in USB enclosures and have a third 2TB drive I will be using in my unRAID server. Once I get unRAID installed/running on the thumb drive, what's the best/easiest way to move everything over? Can I start with just the one spare 2TB drive and move everything over from the existing QNAP (NIC will be faster than USB 2.0 from the externals) and then clear/format and add the two QNAP drives (and the 160GB Cache drive) in after or does unRAID require a minimum 2 drives? 3 drives? I could yank one of the redundant QNAP drives if two are required but I can't seem to find documentation on that anywhere. Otherwise, any helpful hints or tips on setup? It will largely be used as a media (movies, music, photos) server to a WDTV Live and a W8 PC but any recommended plugins? Subsonic interests me as I'd love to listen to my high res audio collection at work and I'll be installing Transmission but otherwise I'm not sure what else I'll "need" until someone informs me of how awesome something is...lol. Lastly, print server...is there a solution there...?
  9. Well that and I really don't see doing as much/needing as much horsepower as some of you guys. I've had a QNAP now for like 5 years that can do any myriad of things and largely it gets used to serve files, download the occasional torrent and act as a print server. That's it. Speaking of print server...is there anything?
  10. Or I could get the i3-4150 that's cheaper than both and pretty on par with the 4330 for performance. Hmmm....
  11. The i3-4330 is dual core FWIW. I believe you have to get in to i5's to get quad. If I go for any "i" chips I'm 99% it will be the 35W i3-4130T. The added performance AND efficiency is hard to beat IMO. Dang forums! Always a detriment to the old budget...lol
  12. By far the best reason to choose the Asus. Personally, I'd just go with the i3 to start ... the improved performance is well worth nominal price difference Tell that to my wife and 20 month old twin boys....
  13. Thanks for the reply Yeah I don't plan on transcoding but I've learned with computers to never say never (perhaps as our kids get older). I suppose that's another reason I'm leaning to the Asus/Celeron combo as it will more than meet my current needs and is the most affordable option. It should be able to do some transcoding (PassMark score of 3206) but if I ever felt it was lacking I could swap in an i3 or i5 CPU at a later date. Seems a better/more future proof upgrade path. In the mean time it gives me a more affordable starting point vs the i3 and twice the RAM of the SuperMicro (plus USB 3.0 and a faster processor at roughly the same price). It gives up a bit in the efficiency department but the NAS likely will be idle for ~3/4 of the day making that only a small issue IMO (not to mention that 53W is still decently efficient). A couple questions on Plugins: It looks like Transmission is the go to plugin for Torrents (correct?) but I'm having trouble locating a print server. What's everyone using? Otherwise I plan on installing APCupsd and Cache Directories. Are there any other recommended ones that you folks would recommend/find indispensable?
  14. FYI to anyone in the Ontario area. Canada Computers has the case on for $71.88 but in store only. I tried my damnedest to get them to ship me one to BC but no luck http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=6_631&item_id=041652
  15. Hi, new to the forum and unRAID and I'm working on a LIAN-LI PC-Q25B build and having a bit of trouble picking a motherboard/CPU. I've narrowed it down to the following: ASUS H87I-PLUS - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132032&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo SUPERMICRO MBD-X7SPE-H-D525-O - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182242&cm_re=X7SPE-_-13-182-242-_-Product If I go with the Asus it's either cheap but less efficient Celeron or more expensive but more efficient i3 Celeron - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116999 i3 - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116947 I'm leaning towards the Celeron as it's much cheaper and the system will be at or near idle most of the time anyway. Thoughts? Obviously the Asus/Celeron is the best on the budget, what are the selling points to going with the other more expensive options (i3 and Supermicro MB)? Are there other better, newer options I've missed? (I plan on using it primarily as just simply a NAS for music, movies, photos, documents etc but will also need torrent and print-server abilities. It will be serving a PC, Tablet (Android), a couple of smart phones and a WDTV live media box.) So unless you guys throw me any curve balls I'm planning on the following: LIAN LI PC-Q25B Case SILVERSTONE SFX ST30SF 300W PSU ASUS H87I-PLUS Motherboard Intel Celeron G1850 Haswell Dual-Core 2.9GHz CPU 53W Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive The hard drives will be two WD 2TB Green drives (already in use in a QNAP) and a WD 2TB Red that I already own. Any future drives will be the Hitachi Deskstar 4TB to expand the array. I'm also considering using an older 160GB drive I have as a cache drive. I don't plan on going to more than 1 cache drive, 1 parity and four storage drives total. I do have a couple 1TB WD RE2 drives but I'll may put those in the Qnap to sell it. Here's a link to the thread that eventually led me here to unRAID if anyone's interested: http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php?39535-Thinking-of-DIY-NAS-HELP!/page2 Now to wait for the Lian-Li case to go on sale....
  16. [Newb]Sorry, wrong forum.[/Newb]
  17. I'd expect that date to slip a little. Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos. Wednesday, October 1 marked on calendar as "Pitch Fork Day"! Is it ok if I bring a torch instead?
  18. Any word on when V6 is going to move out of Beta?
  19. I'm curious about USB3.0 support as well. I'd LOVE to be able to connect an external 3.0 drive for backups and take advantage of the additional speed 3.0 offers. Anyone confirm/deny this?
  20. Great thread! Planning an Unraid NAS build with this case but having trouble narrowing down the MB/CPU. Hoping for some input. Case - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112339 (Hoping this goes on sale for some of the steals I've seen in this thread...) PSU - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256097&cm_re=SILVERSTONE_SFX_ST30SF-_-17-256-097-_-Product The hard drives will be two WD 2TB Green drives (already in use in a QNAP) and a WD 2TB Red that I already own. Motherboard options (are they still "the best"?) ASUS H87I-PLUS - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132032&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo SUPERMICRO MBD-X7SPE-H-D525-O - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182242&cm_re=X7SPE-_-13-182-242-_-Product If I go with the Asus it's either cheap but less efficient Celeron or more expensive but more efficient i3 Celeron - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116999 i3 - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116947 I'm leaning towards the Celeron as it's much cheaper and the system will be at or near idle most of the time anyway. Thoughts? Obviously the Asus/Celeron is the best on the budget, what are the selling points to going with the other more expensive options (i3 and Supermicro MB)? I also found this board: JetWay JNF99FL-525-LF - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153212&cm_re=JetWay_JNF99FL-525-LF-_-13-153-212-_-Product ...but it seems to be hard to source and obviously there's less community support with it. I plan on using it primarily as just simply a NAS for music, movies, photos, documents etc but will also need torrent and print-server abilities. It will be serving a PC, Tablet (Android), a couple of smart phones and a WDTV live media box.
