  1. I have an old AMD Sempron in and old case where I toss all my old drives. I run the sleep plugin. its a unraid box without a parity drive or cache. Once a month my master unraid sends a WOL packet and rsync's to the backup box. It uses about 90% cpu but has no issues pushing the drives close to 90Mb/s then back to sleep it goes for another month.

  3. I upgraded from 6.8.3 to 6.9.0 without issue. I have 10TB segate ironwolf pros (firmware EN01) and 8TB ironwolf's (SC61) - all on a LSI controller with NCQ on. The 8TB's had about 2 years on a ZFS system as a mirror also without issues before I moved them to the unraid system.
  4. I had an old AMD Sempron (with the extra core unlocked) running unraid and it worked great. The only thing lacking was it did not have AES-NI which made encryption not a strong choice. I upgraded to a ryzen 2200G - the system was more snappy but overall my transfer rates / parity check rates did not really change much. I did have a number of ryzen related issues (borking the system under load) that I could never solve - I moved on to an intel system and used my Sempron as a unraid backup box. My ryzen is now a ubuntu desktop system with no issues. If you want power efficient, a Intel J3355 cpu that is built into a Asrock motherboard uses less then 10W and has lots of punch for a NAS.
  5. And to counter that.... I had a 2200G with a Asus prime b450 - I tried all the AMD tricks. None of them really made any difference one way or another. The only thing that seemed to help was putting RAM at its stock speed rather then what it was capable of (3200). I never had any crashes when in general use, just when the system was pushed it would often freeze. In the end I gave up and got a Intel 10400 system and it has no issues and is much more powerful then the 2200G. My old AMD system became a general purpose desktop with Ubuntu 20.04 and has no issues no matter how hard its pushed. From reading these forums, it seems AMD ryzen is pretty hit or miss with unraid. My previous system as an AMD Athlon and it had no issues.
  6. You don't need a Z490 board, they are great for windows gamers who overclock to the max.. but for unraid a b460 board is more then fine and way cheaper. I have a gigabyte DS3H b460. But for 11gen you will need a newer kernel for the onboard NIC. 6.9.x would do it or 6.8.3 with a patch for a newer kernel https://github.com/thor2002ro/unraid_kernel/releases (I have the patch since 6.9 was still in beta when I got my board) For a SATA expansion card I would recommend something like a SAS2008 class PCI card - https://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-H310-W-2-x-CABLES-FLASHED-LSI-IT-MODE-9211-8i-SAS2008-ZFS-UNRAID-TRUENAS/313273295443?epid=12037689214&hash=item48f08b2253:g:VLAAAOSw4vpeJLrq I bought a cheap SATA expansion card at first and had tons of issues with it, the SAS card worked from the get go.
  7. 6.8.3 does not have a new enough kernel to support your NIC. 6.9.x has a newer kernel that will - your other choice (which is what I did) is to use 6.8.3 and a newer kernel. I use the kernel patch from thor2002ro https://github.com/thor2002ro/unraid_kernel/releases
  8. I have a gigabyte b460 DS3H with a i5-10400. lower end specs but I have not seem the same issues with a hot cpu. The only real change was enabling XMP for faster RAM. The z490 being more a 'gamer' board may default to max out performance. the gigabyte manual is VERY bare-bones, I had to pull a Asus b460 manual to make sense of some of the settings as asus better explains what some of them do with the occasional picture.
  9. I have a 2200G and from my research this seems to actually be a first gen Zen1 and a GPU added, my theory is it something about unraid does not like this cpu and chipset. I recently put Ubuntu 20.04 on my ryzen board and no issues at all (even with ram at 3200) and no 'tricks' to make it work. From above it appears you have a 2700x, so maybe more cpu/mobo combos have issues. Have you tried unraid 6.9.beta? it has a newer kernel that may solve some of the issues you are having. I bought my ryzen last year and it pained me to give up on it, plus the $$ I had to shell out.
  10. some people seem to have no issues with ryzen, I did have issues. lowering the ram speed of my 2200G to stock fixed the instability issues. all the other 'tricks' seemed to have no effect in solving my 'blowing up under heavy cpu/disk io' case. In the end I got a intel i5-10400 and all the problems I had went away. The old ryzen system is now a windows desktop with no issues.
  11. yes. just got a i5-10400 with a gigabye b460 ds3h with unraid 6.8.3 running an updated kernel 5.9 works no issues. i upgraded the kernel to make sure the realtek 8118 NIC would work. i don't play games or do any kind of transcoding on it. it replaced an amd ryzen 2200g before that that had issues under heavy loads (yes I did all the amd tricks).
  12. I had the exact same system as you did, but I kept upgrading to the latest version of unraid. I highly recommend you upgrade everything before changing hardware. I would also suggest a "LSI IBM SAS 9200-8i IT Mode" type sata expansion card - I bought one from ebay already setup for unraid (IT mode enabled), I plugged into the videocard slot and had no issues with it. That AMD Athlon is a little powerhouse (mine was actually a cheapo single core Sempron that the asus motherboard auto-upgrade to a dual core athlon) You may also want to pick up a blackfriday external usb drive - this will allow you to upgrade from reiserfs to xfs/btrfs

  14. I have a 2200G and a Asus prime 450. Generally everything works. But if I push the system say with sabnzdb (high cpu/disk) - then the whole thing takes a dump and dies with a random disk i/o error and I have to reboot and rebuild a drive. I've updated the bios, running a newer 5.9 based kernel.. to no avail. Some others have no issues, maybe its the chipset? My pre-ryzin AMD never had any issues - but now I'm going to bail and move to a Intel 1200 socket system.
  15. bzfirmware was the missing bit. all good - hope to do some load testing now to see if my AMD still crashes with this newer then 6.8.3 kernel. thanks for doing this.

  17. in 2010 I bough 6 2TB drives from different vendors. The WD greens lasted 2 years before they died in odd and strange ways the seagates lasted 4 years before CRC errors in SMART started showing up the samsung lasted 9 years before SMART reports of uncorrectable sector count and CRC error count started to creep up the "Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000" still has a SMART report clean as a whistle. I'm finally pulling it today due to its age and needing more capacity. Its amazing this drive has been spinning for over ten years with no issues.
  18. I have tried this headless kodi time to time, its so close to working but no cigar. I finally setup a VM with xubuntu and loaded kodi on top of that. its very clunky to setup and use via the virtual console - but it works to update my mariadb on a regular schedule.
  19. after lots of reading and not understanding why my unraid was acting strange - it is possible that a quirk of UD may be causing my issue. overview of unraid issue: To protect the data on my drives I enabled encryption. To enable autostart I inserted into /boot/config/go the line "cp /boot/config/keyfile /root" This seemed to go well with the drive autostarting on bootup. Then I bought a giant usb drive to use as an array backup, so I installed unassigned devices and UD plus so that I could also encrypt the usb drive. I do a reboot and all is not well. The UD luks encrypted usb drive does auto-mount... but my array no longer auto starts its asking me for a keyfile or keyphrase. If I open a console window and go into /root the keyfile is not there. If I pass in a keyfile from the webGui then it start and the keyfile is in /root does anyone have any idea what is going on? why is the keyfile not getting copied from the go script (or why is it getting deleted after emhttp starts)? is UD somehow doing something with the encrypted UD that touches /root/keyfile in some way?
  20. My old Athlon II system never had any issues, but my new new Ryzen 2200G system borks motherboard interfaces like networking under sustained heavy load. I don't think AM3+ systems have the same issues.

  22. A year old post - but I was looking into this. unraid uses luks for encryption - you can setup a system or virtualbox system with luks and mount the drive with with the secret key to mount and read the drive. I have not tried this, but should work in theory.
