  1. D'oh! Of course, thank you. That's actually how I've got it set up at the moment, just without the permissions. Cheers
  2. Thanks for this - similar to mine, but the tmp directory technique is a good trick. Do you know how to setup permissions for different users? Say for myself I wanted write access to certain directories, but for other users I want it all locked down?
  3. Thank you. I've only got two slots on my motherboard, so I was looking at the Intel specifically for the molex option (eventually plan on putting TV cards in the slots).
  4. Cool - I was looking at replacing my case with a Norco, since unplugging everything and lifting out the box is getting a bit tiresome for a drive change. Hard to find out info on SAS Expanders, since they're a bit niche. I'd earmarked the Intel, since the two SAS ports on my mobo could utilise all drives in the case with it (I think). EDIT: Thank you
  5. Great stuff. How are you getting on with the Norco case? Are you using a SAS Expander? I was looking at switching over to one simply because of the drive access options (I have an old case with internal slots).
  6. Once I'd cleared all the data off the drive, I ended up doing a new config and not assigning anything to disk 1. I still have about 5TB of space, so I can live with 1 less drive for a while. The drive is still in the box, just unassigned, and I'll order a replacement soon (well, an upsized parity). Because my server is under the stairs and the case doesn't have any hot swap bays, it's a back-breaking hassle to get it out, so I'll do it all in one hit. Thinking of moving up to the 8TB Archives - could seriously downsize over time then. I hope it's OK to do a config that doesn't utilise all drive numbers sequentially.
  7. Dawwww, of course, thanks I was hoping there'd be a higher level way.
  8. I've got a drive that's failing (drive 1), and it's going to be a short while before I am able to replace it. Fortunately, I have plenty of spare space on the rest of the array such that I can use Midnight Commander to move everything off it. Is there something I can set that stops new files being written to drive 1? I don't want to lose the "drive 1" slot if possible...?
  9. I'm only thinking about read performance, which parity wouldn't affect, no? But yes, I get the point about RAID storage outside of the array.
  10. I understand there could be a technicality with using it to rebuild the array in the event of a drive failure, but that's pretty much where my understanding starts and ends. I'll read more though.
  11. I'm guessing that in theory one could add an SSD drive to the array and set relevant shares to only use it, whilst all other shares to ignore it. That would leave data in a protected state and give instant access to data. The only things I've read so far suggest that this should theoretically work though.
  12. Thanks guys - great information Of course, yes, I could easily create some cache only shares and duplicate the data manually for now. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too difficult to schedule a sync (although it's no hardship to copy twice. Most of my music is in MP3 (haven't got around to redoing it in FLAC, although some is), so it's no big deal. I have three squeezeboxes, one of them being the alarm clock, that don't really need to spin anything up. Wish you could still get them, great things. Like the idea of raiding the cache too. I've likely got the hardware spare on my mobo with a bit of rejigging to do that. @tdallen - the link didn't work I'm afraid
  13. Hi - is there a way of keeping the contents of a share on either the cache or an SSD whilst it's still part of the protected array (ie, probably duplicated)? I'll explain what I'm aiming for and somebody might be able to offer a solution... I basically want my music folder to be available immediately. That is, if Plex/Squeezebox/client etc., wants to play music then there is no spin up delay. I could always put it all on one drive that never spins down, but I'd rather it be a low power SSD like the cache I have. I still want the share to be protected. Any ideas?
  14. That's odd - the Area Graph works fine this morning. I've looked into it - the labels are only broken when you first turn charts on (turn them off, revisit the page, turn them on again). I had tried changing the order of the table, but that doesn't seem to affect the chart at all.
  15. Hi - I've got two issues with the charts (which could be me being stupid, and could be limitations of the charting utility). None of which are a huge deal. One is on the "Area Graph" - when you have a lot of dates displaying, they all cross over each other into a mush of text. The other graph types seem to solve this by only displaying selected dates, but Area Graph doesn't like this. Is it possible to display the charts in the opposite direction? That is, oldest data first -> newest data last? As it stands you've got the stats displaying in reverse order, and I haven't found a way to solve this yet. Great utility, thank you
  16. Mine ran fine yesterday automatically and all I did was upgrade...
  17. I'd assumed that if a root password was set, the GUI would ask also, and if there isn't one you don't get asked. However, I've always assumed that, so I could be very wrong. Given the amount of power the GUI offers the user, the more things you can now do with v6, and the fact that unRAID is appealing to broader audiences (corporate archives, etc.), I would say that the option to hide the GUI behind a login is essential. I understand that you need to get to it as quickly as possible (and a summary page, or the option to permanently skip the login, or a remember me option would solve these), but when somebody can start, stop, add and remove virtual machines, create, delete and modify network shares, unassign drives, power down, etc., it would seem scary to leave it wide open. Anyways, I came here to work out what dual parity was, and I now know, I think, so thanks one and all. About £180.
  18. Thanks, done I try not to install too many extras so I can keep it fairly tidy.
  19. Seems to be all fine. A nicety would be a reboot button on the plugins page when one is required. Rolls in the switching to main tab, stopping the array and the reboot confirm & proceed tasks if you so wished.
  20. I've forced an "empty cache and hard reload" on the page in Chrome and still the same. I'll uninstall and reinstall. Thanks EDIT: All sorted now, thank you
  21. Just a side issue - I've now got two Sppedtest icons in the Settings page. First one is just the settings, second is settings and test/results. In Tools there is the icon for just test/results. I'm assuming the second icon in settings should no longer be there as the functionality was split between settings and tools, yes? Do I need to reinstall?
  22. Someone please explain.... I get the Yoda thing but after that..... lost. I'd love to, but nope - no idea. I figured you were both in on something that I wasn't. In seriousness, I looked at cadvisor but found it quite daunting and uninstalled for now. I'll try again at some point. Whilst the filling up of dockers isn't really unRAID's fault (I appreciate that by opening up fenced-off environments to third parties one is no longer completely in control), it would be nice if clearer reporting of docker usage could be available somewhere down the line. It's a concept that is not yet fully mature, and it would appear that diagnostic tools would be valuable. Sure, being sensible and pragmatic is the logical way to go, but progress is down to the unreasonable man! That being said, an old PC had Windows 7 eat up all of my RAM with svchost.exe for 5 days last week (I was waiting to see if it free'd up the memory), so it's not just the new kids playing fast and dirty with resources. Funny how Windows doesn't warn you of low memory when it's the one using it all
  23. That all makes sense, thank you. I'll give the umask thing a go.
  24. Hi - this might be a bit of a noob question, but since switching over to this from the stock FTP I've found that I've had to run unRAID's New Permissions tool across any drives with files that I've uploaded to my server before I can move/delete them. That is, I can rip something at work, connect to my server via FTP and upload it. When I get home and tidy it from a Windows box I get an access denied error saying that I need permission from Unix User\nobody. Running the New Permissions rectifies this. Is there something else I should be doing, or is this normal? It's the same user account that I was using to log into stock FTP, but I appreciate that this may not make any difference.
