  1. I just finished upgrading from 4.7 to 6.1.3. So far everything has been working OK, and I have even successfully replaced the parity drive and two data drivers with larger ones. This week I copied new files to the server for the first time since the upgrade, and discovered that the mover did move any of the files from the cache drive. In the log file I see Oct 10 23:54:09 Rama logger: mover started Oct 10 23:54:09 Rama logger: skipping "Movies" Oct 10 23:54:09 Rama logger: mover finished I looked at the mover script and discovered it is not working because when it reads the config file for the share (Movies.cfg) it is looking for parameters in quotes, while in the Movies.cfg file, the parameters are not in quotes. Once I made a change to the share configuration in unRAID and saved it, the configuration file was rewritten with all the parameters in quotes. I haven't tried the mover yet but I assume that it will now now work properly. I checked all the other config files. Those that I had changed in unRAID after the upgrade all had quotes around the parameters. The ones that I had not changed did not have quotes. I have two questions: - Did I miss a step in any of the upgrades? I've reread all the documentation but haven't found any information about the changes in the config file format. - Can I correct all the config files just by making a config change in unRAID and saving? I assume that this is OK but I wanted to make sure. Thanks.
  2. There may be a problem, but to be fair Neweggs packaging is horrendous since they moved away form the peanuts. I've had HDD's from them taped into a styrofoam holder, which wouldn't be too bad if it covered the entire drive. Unfortunately one entire side was not protected and could easily smack against the sides of the box, which is entirely likely when shipped via UPS. I just got two WD Red's from NewEgg. The shipping box was packed using peanuts, and in that box was each drive in a separate sealed brown box, with the drive serial number on the outside, implying to me that the drives were shipped from the factory that way. Maybe NewEgg has had too many returned drives due to their past shipping practices and decided to change their ways?
  3. The jumpers at position D are probably the ones you want to change, however the meaning of each varies by drive model. Was there a label on the other side of the drive listing the jumpers? If not, then you'll need to look up the drive online to find out how to set them. If there are no jumpers set now, then it's probably set to SCSI ID 0, which is ok, so the only thing to check is if termination is enabled or not. Is there a jumper labeled TE? Usually, a jumper at that position would mean that termination is enabled, which I think you need if this is the last drive in the chain (or the only drive). Did this drive come from another computer where it was working (or at one time working)? If it was the only drive, then I think you can leave all the jumpers as is, unless someone else might have been changing them.
  4. If Windows doesn't see the drive at all, it may be the SCSI ID or the termination. There should be some jumpers on the drive to set the SCSI ID. The ID can be 0 to 7, but 7 is reserved for the SCSI card so the drive ID can be set from 0 to 6. SCSI drives also require termination, and since the drive is the only and last drive in the SCSI chain, I think it needs to be terminated. There should a jumper to enable termination.
  5. If you just want to delete jpg files in the current directory, all you need to do is rm *.jpg The -r option tells the rm command to recurse down through all sub-directories below your current directory and delete the jpg files in those directories as well, so don't use it if you only want to delete files in your current directory. A client of mine once ran "rm -r *" in the root directory. They didn't realize until I told that they had deleted _all_ files on their system. It's a very dangerous command. (Fortunately it was only a test system and they had a backup.)
  6. NewEgg is now selling WD20EARS for $250. That's a little more than 4 times what I last paid for them on sale ($60).
  7. I just had two packages delivered this week that I was tracking online, from the same location, shipped at the same time. For both packages the UPS website said "out for delivery" but I didn't get one of them. Later in the day the status on the second package (of course, the one I really needed) changed to "THE PACKAGE WAS MISSED AT THE UPS FACILITY, UPS WILL DELIVER ON THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY". Fortunately I did get it the next day.
  8. Has anyone successfully ordered the SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 card from NewEgg in the last month? I've tried to order it twice (once at the end of January, and once this weekend), each time it has been cancelled and refunded (after my credit card was charged) because NewEgg says it was not in stock or "damaged, misplaced, or only partially available". Meanwhile their website has continued to say that it is in stock. They did send me the cables, but I have no card to use them with. My next step will be to contact NewEgg customer support, but I was curious what other people's experiences were.
  9. What about failure rate? It's been my impression that the WB Caviar Black drives are more reliable than the Greens, and I'd think you'd want the parity drive to be the most reliable and have the least chance to fail. (And isn't it the one that is getting the most usage?)
