Iirc the Green drives were the go-to drives up to 1TB. My 1TB Greens never gave me any issues. The 2TB Greens are when they went down hill. Then Samsung and Hitachi jumped in the top spot.

Tempted to try swapping the original HDD back in and see if that OS install can see it. Also try a USB linux boot drive. May end up reinstalling Windows as a last resort. Gotta wait a few days until she brings it back again. Thanks for all the tips so far! I can get to the GUI no problem in Firefox. Trying to get to the shares in Windows Explorer. Or even see the Server in the Computers listed on my network. I can see all the other computers on the network and I can ping the server. So strange.

Got the laptop back and double-checked all these things. I already had all my settings as you described them. There wasn't a 'server' listing under windows credentials. There weren't any credentials listed at all.

I'm using both Windows Explorer and IE. I can get to the standard Web GUI with no problems and can even get to unMenu (:8080) just fine. I'm trying to browse the shares using WE without any luck. I think I already tried everything you mentioned, but will look again when I get the laptop back in my possession again next week. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it myself and selected the "Home" setting during installation. I've done this on hundreds of PCs/laptops before and have never had this issue. I've tried both wireless and wired using \\Server and \\192.168.1.129 in WE; both of which work on every other PC on my network. I'll update once I get the laptop back and double check your suggestions. Thanks for all the suggestions so far! Keep them coming!

Tried that. Error code is 0x80004005 Unspecified error I tried before ever installing AV. I now have MS Security Essentials installed. I've tried disabling it. I also tried disabling the firewall...no luck. I can ping the server fine.

I got my girlfriend a new laptop for Christmas....typing on it right now. I'm getting it all setup for her, but for some reason I cannot access unRAID on it. I can get to the web interface in a web browser; unMENU is no problem either. But any attempt to access \\Server (I changed the name on mine) from Explorer is met with an error. I've tried both wireless and wired. I've tried typing in the IP address directly as well...same result. I've searched and read through various threads and have tried all the suggestions, but I just cannot seem to get to my server via this particular laptop. My laptop works fine both wireless and wired. My other 2 desktops work fine. And every other PC I've hooked up temporarily has worked fine. I have everything on the same workgroup; I named it "HOME". This laptop can see the other PCs, but it just can't see the unRAID server at all. I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm not getting anywhere. I was hoping to have all this worked out before Christmas, but I'm just getting more and more frustrated. I built my unRAID server back in '08, and this is the first time I've had a PC in my house unable to access it. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 Ultimate on it.

Thanks Joe! Worked like a charm! I had backed up a friend's laptop using Acronis, and had opened the image in R/W mode so I could change permissions and get into the User folder. The laptop was taking forever to process the permission change (it's pretty old), so I cancelled out. I deleted the 2nd image file that was created so I could start from scratch on my PC, but apparently that 2nd image file needs to be present to reopen the original image... Doh!!! Rebuild Tree got it back!

So, I take it this means this process won't work on the cache drive?

I got 2 from Amazon a little while back. One for me, and 1 for my buddy. I thought that Hitachi box was pretty well designed. Seemed like it would absorb shock pretty well from any direction. Unlike some instances where you get a HDD wrapped in bubble-wrap, but corners are not well protected. I do wish they had added more brown paper or air bags to the larger box, and completely surround the inner-box. I don't understand why most shippers just use air bags or brown paper to just fill the outer box instead of surrounding the inner box on all sides to better protect it. The number of RMAs that could be avoided would seem to make it worth their efforts. My Hitachi passed preclear w/ flying colors.

4-in-3? I just got the Antec 902 for a different rig, and it comes w/ black 3-in-3 cages. My Coolermaster Centurion 590 came w/ a 4-in-3 cage and I managed to score 2 more identical cages off these forums to get 12 drives in my 9-bay unRAID case.

Is it still under warranty? I'd hope to get more than 2.5yrs out of any drive.

Finally finished getting her setup the way I want...well close...I still have a 1TB and a 640GB on the TX4 instead of 2 640GB drives on there. And I ended up losing all the data on a 640Gb drive during all the swapping around, but fortunately it's not anything personal and it's easily replaceable. I ran a parity-check today, and this is what I'm getting: It starts out at ~34MB/s, and climbs to ~44MB/s fairly quickly. I missed the 640GB and 1TB transistions, but at 85% complete it was doing 67MB/s. At the end syslog said it took 9.74hrs at an average speed of 55.7MB/s. Without the TX4 I think I started out around 55-58MB/s and maxed out around 89MB/s, but I didn't take good notes to do a decent before & after comparison. Parity checks are definitely faster w/o it...I wonder if it's running at 66MHz? Anyone know how to check? It's still plenty fast considering everything. I'm in good shape now as far as ports and speed, and I've maxed out this case with 12 drives. From here on out I'll just be upgrading drives as needed.

In due time. I'll get 2TB drives as i need them. The 2TB drives are only getting cheaper, but the 640GB AAKS are still worth $40-$50. I'm plan to max out at 12 drives and just upgrade drives as needed.

You read my mind on reorganizing my data, and answered a question I was going to ask in advance! I was hoping unRAID would automatically reorganize my data if I setup include/exclude how I want it, but was pretty sure I'd have to do it manually. Do you know what kind of speeds you were getting before using the card? Right now I'm using all 8 ports on my mobo, and a 2-port PCIe x1 sataII card and am getting 55-58,000KB/s on parity checks. I don't really want to go down to 40,000KB/s if I can avoid it.

I can get a Promise Sata150 TX4 PCI for cheap, and from the specs I've read online it's also capable of 66MHz PCI. Will I notice any slowdown vs. the Sata300 version? I'll only be running 2 drives off of it and that will also be the only 2 drives on the PCI bus.

Well, when I first installed the x1 card I was having issues getting it to show up. I tried the x16 slot and then I couldn't even POST. It turns out that if I lock the card down using the tool-less case design it won't work, but if I just let it sit in the slot w/o the lock or screw it's fine. The lock forces it in there at a funny angle for some reason. Anyway, I think the x16 won't work due to it not POSTing before, but I will give it another try w/o the lock and see what happens. It makes sense that a card not properly seated in the main PCIe slot could cause the PC to not POST. That wasn't me that was having PCI 33MHz issues (it was xamindar), but I am worried that my PCI graphics card may set the bus to 33MHz based on his problem. I already have a 2-port silicon image x1 PCIe card in the only x1 PCIe port that my mobo has. I still have the x16 PCIe slot open, but I don't think anything besides a graphics card will work in there. So, I want 2 more ports, but I don't have any usable PCIe slots available. I have 4 PCI slots and one of them is occupied by a cheap graphics card. The only other options I see are a port multiplier off one of the ICH10R ports or some kind of IDE-Sata adapter off of the IDE header. I'm looking for the cheapest option that won't give me any bottleneck.

I've got the MSI P43 Neo3-F. On MSI's website I see: • Four 32-bit v2.3 master PCI bus slots. - Support 3.3v/5v PCI bus interface. So, it looks like I'm in good shape to use a PCI card to add 2 more drives w/o any bottleneck, correct? What do I need to look for to ensure I get the Promise TX4 that supports the 266MB/s interface?

I have the CM Centurion 590 and am using the included 4-in-3 and a couple 3-in-3's that I had leftover from some Antec900 builds and am full w/ 10 drives. I'm going to move to all 4-in-3's so i can move to 12 and so I need 2 more Sata ports. I'm using all 8 SataII ports off my mobo, and then I have a x1 PCIe 2-port SataII card in the lone x1 PCIe slot on my mobo. I want to add 2 more drives. I figure 2 drives running on the PCI bus won't be too bad since nothing else is really on it. 133MB/s bandwidth seems adequate for 2 drives. My only other option is to get a 4-port x1 PCIe SataII card, but that's going to be a bit more expensive. Any suggestions?
