  1. OS X has an exceptional Migration Assistant to help you with exactly this. Here are some details on its use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413
  2. Very nice... if I didn't have these up and running already, I would absolutely have used this script! Thank you for writing. Just one suggestion - allow the choice of the name of the directory everything gets installed in. Many people like using "_custom" rather than ".custom", as other operating systems don't play nicely with hidden directories (you need to UnMENU plug-in which changes the mover script too).
  3. UnMenu is an excellent GUI, making life easy for those of us who are not Linux experts. You are of course free not to use it - much of the functionality can be done using shell scripts you write yourself.
  4. An excellent investment. I've read 2 or 3 "I had a power-cut and am getting x/y/z error" posts in the last week. I know it doesn't add space/ cool features to the array, but IMHO worth every penny.
  5. Seems to be a sad fact of hard-drive economics these days... cheaper to push them out without thoroughly testing for defects, and then pay for RMAs rather than ensure that a very low % are DOA. I mean before UnRaid, I would throw a drive in to a computer without another thought... a very small % of the population bother to test drives at all before using, no matter the extensiveness of a preclear. And maybe your drive would have survived long enough to get through its warranty period (under normal use patterns... not preclear's) and then it would be on you to pay to replace. I'm sure that someone much smarter (and better paid!) has run the numbers and it works out cheaper for them.
  6. SMART report looks fine. Try powering off and re-seating the connectors as Joe L suggested
  7. http://media.seagate.com/2011/04/seagatetechnology/seagate-and-samsung-announce-broad-strategic-alignment/ Not good news at all for hard disk prices... we're going to be left with WD and Seagate (once Hitachi merges with WD).
  8. p.s. It's throwing an error at the moment for TV shows... I've just posted a question on that forum.
  9. I don't see a windows version... what do you mean by mac'ish?
  10. What version of UnRaid are you using? Sounds like it could be a permissions issue...
  11. Need a mac, and takes a bit of setup, but this is exceptional: https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12726&hilit=blu+ray+mac
  12. You should have received an email with a .key file attached... mine was called "Pro.key" You put that file in you /boot/config/ folder (don't do anything else to it) and then reboot the server.
  13. No problem with the plan - just think about your data requirements for the next 1-2 years... you're probably going to want to rebuild at that point anyway for some new fancy motherboard, and 4/5TB drives etc. If 10 or 12 drives will be sufficient, then that's fine, but I've you've got 15TB of data already on other media, you might want to rethink the strategy. You can get a 20+ case other than a rackmount. I have an Antec 1200, which will take 4x 5-drive backplanes... plus plenty of space for a couple more if needed.
  14. Is there any kind of list anywhere of which packages (installed from unMENU) are compatable with 5.0-beta6a? I am very keen to upgrade from 4.7 (to get AFP support), but have a bunch of packages installed which I'm worried about losing . The install guide says to disable them before the upgrade... Thank you!
  15. The finishing SMART reports are stored in /var/log/smart_start_sdX and /var/log/smart_finish_sdX so you can see them with your browser at: //tower/log/smart_start_sdX and //tower/smart_finish_sdX Keep an eye on the emails as they come through... the final email contains a dump of the final result of the preclear. Joe L. has thought of everything!
  16. It's 50% though Phase 1... there are 10 phases (some quicker than others). You can see if you look at the terminal window. It'll take 24+ hours guaranteed!
  17. It is a challenge, but using the holes around the area, you can get to all of them with a large clamp (one of these)... I've done it myself!
  18. Good to know - thank you for the info. Joe L. is a guru... if it is possible to do, I know he'll figure it out!
  19. I realized that it wasn't a normal webserver when I tried to retro-fit an icon into the system myself... couldn't find an HTML document anywhere! Anyway, all that needs to be done is to write the following line as you're generating the <head> content of the webpage: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/path/to/favicon.ico" /> I appreciate that this may be more challenging to actually do in unMENU than I am making out... I guess the "/path/to/favicon.ico" has to be handled in a clever way. I agree that the caching issue could cause a problem - and may cause a browser specific problem. Perhaps in a months or so when you get a chance to try it, you can see. If not, then that idea can be scrapped! Thank you for the great work!
  20. So - I thought I'd put together a few little favicons. I woke up this am having had a bit of a brainwave in my sleep (dreaming of UnRaid apparently!). The UnMenu page refreshes on a very frequent basis, so why not change the UnMenu favicon to reflect the status of the array. I have the page open all the time in Firefox, and pinned to the left side of the tabs. By changing the favicon based on the status, I can see at a glance in my browser the status of the array. I've made 5 favicons, based on the same underlying design: - green.ico - when at least one disk in the array is spun-up - greenyellow.ico - when the array is spun-down - red.ico - when UnRaid needs your attention (not sure if this ever happens) - redcross.ico - when UnRaid has detected a disk failure - blue.ico - just a generic icon in case the above don't work/ aren't of interest I don't know the legal lingo, but I freely release these into the public domain without license, so feel free to do with these as you please. favicons.zip
  21. Excellent - thank you very much... I've updated and will keep my eyes open for future errors.
  22. Easiest way to cron on a daily basis is to just drop the script into: /etc/cron.daily/ It'll get executed every day according to the schedule set in crontab - 4:40am in your case (the default). Can do the same for hourly, weekly or monthly using cron.hourly, cron.weekly and cron.monthly, respectively.
  23. There isn't a specific lead time, but I'd guess you'll get it in 24 hours. Mine was very fast coming in over a weekend
