  1. John I kind of called you out on the Beta 14 thread someone posted a beta 14 compile with fixed LSI support and knowing that you had some test boxes, I said I was waiting to see what you said before trying it!
  2. I will wait for reports from JohnM because I'm sure he's testing this out on his LSI's!
  3. Upgraded my RAM on the mobo in my signature so I no longer need this smaller set. Perfectly working, pulled from a working server.
  4. I should have posted an update! I've got 16GB of the Hynix stuff running alongside the Kingston 8GB. All has been running perfect for 2-3 weeks now. You should be fine John. Tempted to pick up another 16GB at that price.
  5. The only thing that stinks is that some of us are stuck on previous betas (I'm on beta 12a because I have (3) LSI cards). Honestly, I probably wouldn't update until the final's been out for a while and fully tested against LSI. Beta 12a is so stable and working, I really don't want to mess with it.
  6. This mobo is incredibly interesting....pls link to your new thread when you start it. I love that it has the SAS2008 onboard. That would free me up to pass thru more PCI devices to my guests. Hmmmm....you've made me a little jealous
  7. Oh and I also got that monoprice USB card with the NEC chipset. Immediately recognized by ESXi and my APC UPS stuff is working perfect. Haven't tried a full shutdown yet but I'm getting notifications from unRAID again.
  8. So Johnm (and everyone else). Got that RAM mixed with 8GB of Kingston stuff. So far so good. 24GB
  9. Personally, I like running it directly on unRAID for a number of reasons. I don't want to manage mappings to the server disappearing. AFP is still terrible on unRAID. I also like the fact that plex picks up things quicker (as well as SAB, sickbeard, etc) because they're mapped directly to the file system. I use my other VM's for lots of other stuff. I've got a dedicated Slackware vm that just hosts Ventrilo and apache . The windows vm I have I is specificallY for managing esxi. The Lion VM is my EyeTV dvr (combined with the excellent HDHomeRun). I've got these servers doing different things that either unraid doesn't do (eyetv) or I don't want hosted on unRAID for security reasons (apache, ventrilo).
  10. Well, I've got a few different servers running on unRAID (Plex, Subsonic, etc) so not sure if they need more RAM.
  11. How did that work out for you? When I bought my board, this stuff was available. since then, it vanished and the price skyrocketed. Glad to see it is back. My next question is if it will mix and match with kingston. Yeah it's been tough for them to get/keep stock. I will be receiving it tomorrow so I'll let you know. I'm sure that mixing and matching will be ok but we'll see. I'm not opposed to buying another 16GB and just maxing it out. Hopefully one day unRAID will be 64 bit and can use over 4GB.
  12. I have a setup at home that I can flash the cards easily. I'm not selling any of mine (have 4 of them, 3 I use, 1 as a backup) but I would be more than willing to flash them for you if you pay for shipping. They're seriously the best cards because they're so cheap.
  13. Just bought 16GB of this RAM http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=W1333EB8GH
  14. Just bought this card to replace the other card seeing as I don't need FW800 in unRAID. This other card I bought from Amazon (just USB 2.0) came up as Unknown USB in ESXi. The FW800/USB 2.0 card worked perfectly with an NEC chipset. Thinking of keeping it cept for the fact that it's $50
  15. I thought about it and the only time email alerts ever worked for me was when I was using the unMENU version of the APCUPSD plugin. I uninstalled the regular plugin and went back to the unMENU version. SUCCESS! Now, I'm not sure whether it's a combination of the USB 2.0 card + the old plugin or if the old plugin would work with a normal USB port. That's what I 'm going to test next. Figured that I'd pass through the 1.5TB drive I had setup in FW800 enclosure as another RDM drive passed thru to my Lion server. The SSD RDM is FAST! I think the difference between the old plugin and the new is that the new defaults to USB while the old defaults to SMART. I've tried using SMART on the new version and it didn't work.
  16. Is unRAID loading faster now? I've been using the VMDK method for quite some time now so I didn't even check. I'm sure it'd boot pretty quickly tho. This card does have an internal USB port. What's really crappy is I thought that I'd be able to divvy up the FW800 and USB 2.0. Not so with passthru. Since they're on the same card, the unRAID won't boot if FW800 is passed thru to Lion. It says Device is busy. They're two different chipsets too
  17. Yup, it's easy to rollback. Have you ever used PPF-O-MATIC or something similar? It's flipping bits (afaik). So if you want to remove the limitation of running on Mac hardware, it removes that(those) bit(s). If you want to go back to vanilla, it restores them. That's how I see it at least. Update on that FW800/USB 2.0 card. USB 2.0 passthru to unRAID works but it's still not kicking off my script when the power is pulled. The search continues.
  18. Will do! It's really not that hard, just need to do it from scratch to remember the steps and write them down
  19. I hope you have better luck than I did, but I'm pretty sure not going with an NEC controller was my problem. Please keep us posted on how it works out! Edited: Actually, considering it's USB 2.0, I think you're def good to go. Nice find. PS. How difficult was it to get an OS X VM? It was a little difficult if you don't understand hackintoshes. Luckily I've built quite a few of those in my day Honestly tho, that's not a huge a pain since ESXi 5.0 natively supports Mac OS X on its hypervisor, you just need to make it think it's running on Mac hardware. Here it is in a nutshell: Patch ESXi 5.0 to remove the Mac hardware limitation, reboot. (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?s=b26b9cfe2f95dd2dd64696cf47c161aa&showtopic=267296P) Create a Mac OS X VM Pass thru a Lion USB stick to that VM Boot from that USB with some special parameters (Which I had to look up) Install Lion and then VMware Tools from VMware Fusion Caveats: There are some known issues with managing the Guest via vCenter. Essentially, you can't do it. You'll have to connect directly to your host. (see link above) Video has gotten better, but it's not perfect. (auto fit, 3D, etc) The patch/unlock of ESXi can be completely undone without having to reformat your stick. It's just flipping a bit. Very easy to do this. Backup your stick first anyway. I will be re-doing my Mac guest with my new RDM SSD. I can write up a tutorial for the forum if enough ppl think it's worth it.
  20. I ended up buying this card: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0024JR2CO/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details Going to pass thru the firewire to the Mac OS X guest and the USB to unRAID.
  21. Has anyone passed thru USB hubs on this mobo? I've got the unRAID USB plugged into motherboard header and the ESXi stick plugged into a header adapter like this: http://www.amazon.com/Koutech-Accessory-IO-UU220-Header-Pin-Adapter/dp/B003UIM142/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1328886569&sr=8-10 I really want to pass through another USB header directly to unRAID but have followed JohnM's advice about having a non working ESXi stick afterwards. Is there and easy way find which is which, or has anyone mapped the headers to USB controllers in ESXi? I really see this as the only solution to my APC problem (I don't get alerts when the power goes out even though the UPS is recognized in a normal USB pass through). Easy method would be to install a USB card but currently my only free slot is taken up by a firewire 800 card passed thru to Mac OS X Lion.
  22. The slotrafter only holds 2.5" drives. I have two, I like them, they are plastic, but it works for what you need. There's another product you can look into, it only holds one, but it's nice. SYBA SY-MRA25018 Another choice instead of using an ssd is to use a PCI based ram drive. The gigabyte i-RAM you can find them used on eBay. Not sure it will be as fast as a modern SSD on a 6GB/s sata port, but it's a real ram drive so you would never have to worry about wear leveling. I use it in my windows 7 machine for temp and pagefile. Thx for the info. Too bad I can't find that Slot Rafter anywhere. It's discontinued. I already have the SYBA one and love it. EDIT: I actually have a startech http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MWDRD6/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details looks like Syba and Startech get their stock from the same supplier
  23. Has anyone tried ESXi 5.0's ability to use an SSD as a cache for memory ballooning. This RAM still isn't in at any store and I'm looking for other options. I know it wouldn't replace RAM completely but will it help a lot? Can I over commit more? Also, John.....that PCI bracket that held a 3.5" and 2.5"....were you ever able to purchase that? I can't click on purchase. Seems like a good solution to add some ESXi drives. http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/064/slotrafter_detail.html
  24. I too would like to know if all the backplanes work
  25. Just an update for everyone on the memory.... Newegg said it would be in stock Jan 10. That didn't happen. Superbiiz also took it off their website. Still waiting....
