I agree that a roadmap with dates is impossible to adhere to. I don't know where you got this info but it would help if this was posted officially, maybe in a forum post here?

i see nothing in there to improve the basic parity, improve speed of shfs, add checksums etc. Very disappointing. Its all zfs mostly.

Everything is taken from the podcast that everyone should watch

I also think this is a nice way to tell about future things and "roadmap"
I think people would be happy with an "oh, for this version we plan this, for this version we plan this, but we cant set a date and time for it"

Have you seen the unraid roadmap? If so could you share it with the rest of us? I'm sure we'd love to have a look at what future unraid versions will provide.

    Thanks!

There wont be one, at least not one with dates on it and as someone else said ether in this thread or another just recently, with good reason. If there was a time-frame for stuff, people would complain just as much if the dates was not correct.

But here is what we know so far at least:

    6.13

    -ZFS part2
-Will be the last version of Unraid 6

    7.x
    -ZFS expand zpool
    -Multiply Unraid-Arrays
    -Everything will be a pool, multiply unraid-pools, zfs-pools, btrfs-pools
-Mover updated so you can use mover from pool to pool
-Requirement for Unraid-array to start, lifted
    -VM Snapshot and VM cloning
    -WebGUI seach, with multilingual support
    -IntelARC support

    Future ideas:
-Hardware database: will my hardware work with Unraid? Database with users config, if they work or what you need to do for it to work. Users can choose to upload their setup anonymously

-My Friends Network: expanding of UnraidConnect. Backup files encrypted/unencrypted to other Unraid servers
    -Responsive webgui
    -UnraidAPI

  3. So when I started with unraid version 6 was rather new, version 5 was still supported and had its own forum section.

Lately I been wondering; how was version 1 to 4? Can't seem to find any info on it.

Sometime i wish there was like an unraid history page 😁

No one mentioned NextCloud Memories?  I tried the "top" 5 and none can replace Google Photos except Memories.  This is the best Google Photos replacement I can find and it is fast!

Memories is good, very good, but my problem lately is Nextcloud itself 😞

When trying to sync a lot of files/images at once, it freaks out with network errors, no matter if I tried with or without reverse proxy and tried to edit the config files to allow bigger files.

So now Im trying out immich for images and Seafile for documents and so far its been faster and less errors than Nextcloud 👍

If you read what you get, the licenses seem to be different. But sure, I also see "All features of Unraid OS" but the listed functions differ. 😉

Agree, its confusing how it is written now.

Also, its great to have options.
Its a good thing that we both have the unraid-array, btrfs, xfs and zfs options.
And without the array, unraid would not be unraid, just another TrueNAS "clone" that would sit between core and scale.

As I try to tell all the TrueNAS "sellers" out there, TrueNAS is great, but me and many does not like or want that we are locked to zfs.
And surprise surprise, the hard hitting TrueNAS "sellers" wont mention up front that its locked to zfs, basically need identical drives, cant (for now) expand an pool without putting in same amount as drives as existing vdev(s), cant use mixed size drives (unless you make multiply pools).

And if you try to point this out they most of the time just goes "Buuut muuuh freee!!"

(also TrueNAS is not truly free, they too have developers they need to pay just like Lime, but since TrueNAS is an (as far as I know) hard hitter in the enterprise market. they also sell their own hardware solutions, there is where they get the money from. If Unraid had been a hard hitter in enterprise marked, Lime had sold their own hardware solutions etc, Im pretty sure Unraid would have been free for private use too.)

That pricing structure is ridiculously bad for any home user. For that reason, I think I have rarely seeing any non-business user running a legitimate copy of PS. Businesses do, but only because there isn't really any competition (no, GIMP isn't) and because all relevant professionals are trained on that system. Not the case with unRAID, where free alternatives like OMV and FreeNAS exist. Your pricing structure can be expensive when you hold a defacto monopoly, when people don't really have a choice, and when they are making money with your software. None of those things are true for unRAID.

The PS-Photograpy plan is not a bad deal for home-users.
Before when PS was per version payment, I could not afford PS at all, after I could.
When I used primary Mac I used Aperture until Apple killed that, then stand alone Lightroom because it was affordable before the Photography plan made PS way more accessible for us who could not spend that much money at once.

Whether we use the term subscription, maintenance fee, support fee, held hostage or whatever you choose to call it, it is an ongoing cost to keep the os secure and up to date.... if I need to keep paying for something that is basically a subscription in my eyes. (I want a different scream this time 😜)

I'd be fine with it be a subscription to get feature updates, or even a more modular approach where you can add 'extras' (not sure what exactly, or how much extra), but this doesn't just block you from getting features, it stops you from getting updates for security of the OS and we all know how fun it was for some nas owners who got hit by ransomware attacks...

Even Topaz, who basically had the EXACT same model (beside they screwed us customers over by releasing an new version where our old licence was not valid) does NOT call it an "subscription" (because it is not)

I'll be blunt... I HATE subscription models for software with a passion and while I appreciate that Limetech needs money I'm not sure that subscriptions on the lowest tiers are really the best way to go about it.   I actively sought out alternatives when adobe went that way for example...  I do appreciate the fact that Limetch are going to honour existing licences though and not stop us using the software after the subscription has been stopped.

Don`t come and say I did not warn ya!

No, becouse nobody sell drives with this words:

Anyway, my whole butthurt is becouse of one reason:

When I decide to build a DIY NAS six months ago I've made some reserch, try OMV, Truenas and bunch other solutions, then I find Unraid, I've tested it and think "Ok, maybe it's not free but as far I read its one time payment and predictible licence upgrade cost"

After that I buy really cheap hardware - old HP 800G3 tower for around 40$ and old stock WD RED 4TB again for around 45$ per disk plus some basic licence and it was really cheap and more than I need sollution.

And now what? Licencencing switch from perpetual to subscription (i know, only for new users not for me) and licence upgrade cost will be increased up to X. Which actually affect me if I plan to upgrade licence in future (so i buy pro licence to not pay PRO+n $ cost)

Maybe if I use this software for 8 years I feel different in this situation.

Nobody likes to feel like a donkey.

If I hear the word "subscription" used to describe the changes for Unraid one more time, I gonna scream!😣

Hopefully this news means Unraid 7 is going to come with some regularly added features/upgrades to justify the increase? Seems all the good stuff the past few years has come directly from the community, and Unraid itself has just been in maintenance/security mode. My (non-internet connected) server has been on 6.11 for a year and half and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything yet

Would love to actually see "unlimited" devices apply to the main array, bcachefs when it's "ready", a simple way to deal with bit-rot detection (and healing), 3+ parity drive support, etc

7.x will bring multiply array support but as far as Tom has said, 28+2 will be the limit.
I dont think they will bring in an 3rd parity, if Im not wrong that would mean an 3rd way to calculate parity has to be used, sounds too complicated

  11. First its not an subscription, its an update renewal cost.
Subscriptions, you loose access once you don't pay, like Adobe, any streaming platform, Backblaze, you cant cancel before you delete your backup and so on.

I don`t Tom wants to be like "anyone" else in the market, I believe he is honest when he says they listens to the community and when he said he don't want to go out an get investors.

Because if they did get investors, they would be FORCED to do the stupid things that everyone else is doing because "customers? no no, you cant listen to them! Who has the money? I the investor does! You need to do what I SAY now so I can get my money back"

Hello, I've never used Unraid before, but I'm about to build a server, and I would like to use Unraid. My question is, should I hurry up and buy a Pro for $129 and then I will get updates for life, I think it's better to buy now than to wait for the new licenses right?

I hope it's not too off-topic, it's kind of related to licensing: When can we get rid of USB Key requirement!?!?!?! I hate it, it's the weakest, most annoying part of Unraid for me.

As Tom said in the podcast, wont happen any time soon.
For many, having Unraid 100% offline is something they want. IF Unraid was to be able to be installed on any drive, they had to look into other things (UUID) the license had to be bound to or have an always online drm (phone home)
The majority of Unraid users dont want internet to be an requirement to use Unraid.

if having to boot from the USB is such a pain, I would look into an USB-DOM instead.
