  1. Hi, I am considering upgrading my H8DA8 motherboard with an X10SL7-F and have a few queries that I couldn't find an answer to yet : 1. Does it matter which SATA/SAS ports are used for the Parity Drive(s), SSD? 2. If I also upgrade to PWM fans (which the X10SL7-F supports) is there a way to control fan speed based on temperature in Unraid ? 3. (Not an Unraid query but thought I would ask just in case someone has info here ) I have an I2C connection on the H8DA8 to the PSU unit, will the SMB header on the H8DA8 be backward compatible ? Does anyone know of a plugin that can monitor the SMB (I2C) bus in Unraid ? 4. I need 17 drives to be connected , what would be the recommendation for the best way to add the extra 3 SATA drives? 5. I saw in a thread that to get the best performance for multiple simultaneous VM's it is best to go for an i5 processor, which one is the most commonly used ? 6. I see that the motherboard is very choosy about RAM, what would be the safest recommendation (I need to get the components onward shipped to me overseas and sending anything back is near impossible) ? I have a strange problem on my system, if I have my SAT-MV8 controller cards installed then I cannot access the WebGUI using IP address (Telnet and Ping works fine), this perhaps indicates the Unraid web server is not running ? I also noticed a lot of SCSI error messages and a "Trace Ends" message during the boot, its also a very long boot process When I physically remove the SAT-MV8 cards I no longer get the error messages , have a quick boot and can access the Web GUI. I am new to Unraid but would like to try and work it out, could you possibly give me a few things to look at and suggestions on the best way to gather diagnostic information from the system that I can post. Thank you
  3. I found the cause, its my SAT-MV8 controller cards, if I remove them then I can access the Unraid Webserver. I will post a separate message on this problem
  4. Hi, it is formatted as FAT. The USB works fine on my previous system, it's just on this new one I'm having the problems. I even tried a completely new install of a trial on a FAT USB but exactly the same problem
  5. I am setting up Unraid on a new system. I can telnet and ping the Unraid server but unable to access via http using IP address ( static but also previously tried dhcp). Http://tower doesn't resolve either. Any pointers gratefully received.
  6. Found the problem with my lost http. Both on board Ethernet ports overheated from the hot air exhaust coming off the server due to running at 95% for over two days to complete the Preclearing ! I found the logs in the USB. Tried opening them on a Mac but it looks like they are a script rather than a text log How can I view the results of the Preclearing through the command line on the console ?   7. It looks like I have lost my http connection to the Server. I will navigate around the console, could someone kindly direct me to where the Results files will be located from the Pre-clear I have just run. Also, are these Results Files written to the USB ? Thx
  8. 2 days 6 hours later I have finished pre-clearing 12 drives simultaneously. Turned out the low Post Read was just a temporary slow down, once it got going the average read was 45MB/s. Big question now though, how do I see the results of the Pre-clear ? When I click on the "eye" icon against any of the drives I just get a blank window popup (whereas before I got the log). Thx

I am just running the Plugin for the first time and have experienced something that seems strange : On average I am getting around 50 MB/s for the zeroing step but most of the drives have now moved onto the "Post-read" step and the speed has dropped (for the Post-read drives) to around 1.5 MB/s. Is this normal ? On a separate note, I started all 12 drives at the same time (well as fast as I could click through the pre-clear dialogues) and the drives are identical. During the zeroing I noticed several drives take a lot longer to move to the next step even though the average transfer speed stayed the same as the other drives. Does this indicate a problem with the drives that are lagging or perhaps a problem with the controller ? Thank you

I am new to Unraid, up until now I have used a Drobo 5D but decided to move to a system that I had more control over when a drive fails i.e. improve my chances of actually getting the data back. To get me going I bought a secondhand system on ebay which has : Supermicro H8DAE motherboard (2 x 2.4GHz dual core, 32GB ECC RAM, Onboard IDE only, 2 x 133MHz PCI-X 64bit slots, 2 x 66MHz 64bit PCI-X slots) 2 x Supermicro SAT2-MV8 PCI-X controller 133MHz PCI-X 64 bit, capable of handling 8 x Sata II each 15 SATA bay case I also have the following drives to go in : 1 x 6TB Hitachi 7200rpm Sata III 10 x 2TB Hitachi 7200rpm Sata III 5 x 4TB Seagate 5400 rpm Sata III (extracted from USB external drives) 2 x 250 GB Samsung EVO SSD drives I have a couple of general questions that I would appreciate any thoughts on: (1) I plan on using the 6TB drive as the Party drive, should I connect it to one of the SATA ports on either of the current SAT2-MV8 boards or should I install a third SAT2-MV8 specifically for the Parity drive. the issue I immediately see with adding a third SAT2-MV8 is that it will have to go on a 66MHz PCI-X slot because the two 133MHx slots are already in use but I am thinking that perhaps that is preferable to having the Parity drive share the PCI-X bus with the data drives. (2) Should I alternate the 5400rpm and 7200 rpm drives across the two SAT2-MV8 cards or put all 5400RPM on one SAT2-MV8 (3) Is it worth fitting the SSD's as a cache pool i.e. with my board and cards am I likely to get the write benefit of SSD. (4) I have more drives than connection points (16 SATA 2 connection points but 18 Drives). I have 30TB of data at the moment and it is growing about 100GB per day. Which drives should I abandon ? or should I go for the third (slower 66MHz) PCI-X SAT2-MV8 and add more drive bays ? or look at a second Unraid (5) I have 3 x 8TB seagate archive drives. These are explicity banned from use on the Drobo so I'm using them as a second layer backup. Should I perhaps consider incorporating them into the Unraid system ? I have read the FAQ and Manuals but its taking a while to absorb so I thought I would ask for some initial guidance to get me started Many thanks in advance Steve
