  1. I solved it!!! When I 'Force Stop' the VM and 'Start' it again, then I am able to connect and see the desktop fine. Even if I restart the VM I could not connect. Its strange! Once I connected I changed the resolution (which was set to some crazy high resolution) to 1920x1080. After that I don't have any issues so far! In addition I also changed the machine from pc-q35-2.3 to pc-i440fx-1.4. Not sure which is better type for Linux guest OS.
  2. I created a new ubuntu 14.04.3 VM and from the install screen itself I could not connect to the VNC Remote. I tried different browsers and machines with no luck. I tried different scaling methods in VNC Remote. Here is my XML: <domain type='kvm' id='1'> <name>Ubuntu</name> <uuid>0976f710-c9cb-7320-9a86-bbd296ae03fb</uuid> <description>Ubuntu VM</description> <metadata> <vmtemplate name="Custom" icon="ubuntu.png" os="ubuntu"/> </metadata> <memory unit='KiB'>4194304</memory> <currentMemory unit='KiB'>4194304</currentMemory> <memoryBacking> <nosharepages/> <locked/> </memoryBacking> <vcpu placement='static'>4</vcpu> <cputune> <vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='0'/> <vcpupin vcpu='1' cpuset='1'/> <vcpupin vcpu='2' cpuset='2'/> <vcpupin vcpu='3' cpuset='3'/> </cputune> <resource> <partition>/machine</partition> </resource> <os> <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-q35-2.3'>hvm</type> </os> <features> <acpi/> <apic/> </features> <cpu mode='host-passthrough'> <topology sockets='1' cores='4' threads='1'/> </cpu> <clock offset='utc'> <timer name='rtc' tickpolicy='catchup'/> <timer name='pit' tickpolicy='delay'/> <timer name='hpet' present='no'/> </clock> <on_poweroff>destroy</on_poweroff> <on_reboot>restart</on_reboot> <on_crash>restart</on_crash> <devices> <emulator>/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64</emulator> <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw' cache='writeback'/> <source file='/mnt/cache/VM_DATA/Ubuntu14/vdisk1.img'/> <backingStore/> <target dev='hdb' bus='virtio'/> <boot order='1'/> <alias name='virtio-disk1'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x04' function='0x0'/> </disk> <controller type='usb' index='0' model='ich9-ehci1'> <alias name='usb'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x02' function='0x7'/> </controller> <controller type='usb' index='0' model='ich9-uhci1'> <alias name='usb'/> <master startport='0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x02' function='0x0' multifunction='on'/> </controller> <controller type='sata' index='0'> <alias name='ide'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x1f' function='0x2'/> </controller> <controller type='pci' index='0' model='pcie-root'> <alias name='pcie.0'/> </controller> <controller type='pci' index='1' model='dmi-to-pci-bridge'> <alias name='pci.1'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x1e' function='0x0'/> </controller> <controller type='pci' index='2' model='pci-bridge'> <alias name='pci.2'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x01' slot='0x01' function='0x0'/> </controller> <controller type='virtio-serial' index='0'> <alias name='virtio-serial0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </controller> <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:46:b6:df'/> <source bridge='br0'/> <target dev='vnet0'/> <model type='virtio'/> <alias name='net0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x01' function='0x0'/> </interface> <serial type='pty'> <source path='/dev/pts/0'/> <target port='0'/> <alias name='serial0'/> </serial> <console type='pty' tty='/dev/pts/0'> <source path='/dev/pts/0'/> <target type='serial' port='0'/> <alias name='serial0'/> </console> <channel type='unix'> <source mode='bind' path='/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/channel/target/Ubuntu.org.qemu.guest_agent.0'/> <target type='virtio' name='org.qemu.guest_agent.0' state='disconnected'/> <alias name='channel0'/> <address type='virtio-serial' controller='0' bus='0' port='1'/> </channel> <input type='tablet' bus='usb'> <alias name='input0'/> </input> <input type='mouse' bus='ps2'/> <input type='keyboard' bus='ps2'/> <graphics type='vnc' port='5900' autoport='yes' websocket='5700' listen='0.0.0.0' keymap='en-us'> <listen type='address' address='0.0.0.0'/> </graphics> <video> <model type='vmvga' vram='16384' heads='1'/> <alias name='video0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x01' function='0x0'/> </video> <memballoon model='virtio'> <alias name='balloon0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x05' function='0x0'/> </memballoon> </devices> </domain>
  3. FANA vs CPU seems to be working independently. I will set the MAX value in dynamix autofan control to 39C so that the fans will spin at full-speed in that case. I don't have a hot-swap case, hence the HDD fans are located in front of the hard drive cages. So far my HDD temps vary between 28C to 32C.
  4. Optimal, that allows for independent control of FANA vs rest i think I changed the fan mode and got the new Noctua HDD Fans. Everything is working perfect now... my unRaid box is in my office room and is quite now. Very nice thread by m3ki that motivated and helped me. Thank you m3ki!
  5. jumperalex, you are correct. My typo, (should be 5-in-3). So, on this RPC-430 do you think I can put three of 5-in-3 hot swap cages? Russ Uno, Norco RPC-431 looks interesting. Looks like I can't use hot swap cages with this?
  6. I am no Linux expert, no idea what commands to run . I think I need to bite the bullet and make a new VM. Need to see if I can activate another copy of Windows on same key I have!! Thanks for trying to help me out.
  7. The 3-in-2 converter you are referring to is it the standard hot-swap converter? I saw this case earlier and thought since it has only 2 external 5.25'' drive bays, I cannot use this. All the 5.25'' converters are 2 bay 5.25'' to 5 bay 3.5''.
  8. I saw Synology and QNAP products. But I don't want to leave unRaid. I am not sure if there is enough market for short-depth custom NAS case.
  9. m3ki, In the IPMI Settings, what is the current setting for "Fan Mode"? Mine is set to "Set Fan to Standard Speed"
  10. I believe I need to boot into the VM to run some of the commands, if so I cannot try this as my SSD is smaller than the VM image (I am not a Linux expert, sorry if my understanding is incorrect)
  11. hello all, I am in search for ultimate NAS case. I understand the definition varies from person to person and the needs. Here are my needs: -> Minimum of 10 drive bays -> Should accept mATX or mini-ITX motherboard -> At-least 2 expansion slots -> Short-depth - approx 15'' or so. Should be able to mount on AV cabinet I found few that are close but not perfect: http://www.istarusa.com/istarusa/products.php?series=Audio%20Video%20Rackmount⊂=AV%203U&model=D-395-DE15#.VjIcfCtmq_F http://www.istarusa.com/istarusa/products.php?series=Audio%20Video%20Rackmount⊂=AV%203U&model=D-3100HN#.VjIQYytmq_E http://www.istarusa.com/istarusa/products.php?series=Audio%20Video%20Rackmount⊂=AV%202U&model=D-265-DE9-MATX#.VjId2Ctmq_F http://www.u-nas.com/product/nsc800.html (not even close, but a good start I think) I thought of purchasing a regular mini-tower case and outfit it with 5.25'' to 3.5'' hot-swap cages. However, I am wondering if there are any NAS/Storage specific cases in the market?
  12. I can see the video fine; What issue are you having?
  13. Hello, I have a Windows 8.1 VM created in unRaid 6.1.3 with 200GB of disk size for the VM disk itself. I ended up replacing my HDD cache pool with single SSD cache disk (I backed up the VM disk image and the XML before the replacement). Now, how I can resize the disk size and re-import? I created a new VM and then I used the following command to resize the old VM image: sudo qemu-img resize vmdisk1.img 50G and replaced the new VM image with the resized image (and the XML as well). The VM does not start. Any documented method to resize/compact existing VM image file? Thanks!
  14. Thanks for the warning 1. I plan to add mod probe for the three sensors 2. Don't plan to add copy sensor.conf line (per wiki page this is not needed for Dynamix) 3. The other line I am not sure is copying the fancontrol: cp /boot/config/fancontrol /etc/fancontrol Comments/thoughts?
  15. I updated my thresholds. attached is the screenshot. Will try to run some tests once I get home. Will plug another fan in FAN1 to see if it responds to the tests. Will update the GO file as well. Will update with my results
  16. What are the values you used in the ipmitool command?
  17. I am working with Mellanox support team to check if Connectx-2 card supports WOL or not. According to their 2.9.1200 firmware release notes it supports. Will post here once I receive a response from them.
  18. This is the command I ran: ipmitool -I lan -U ADMIN -H *ip address* sensor thresh FAN1 lower 150 225 300 Should I run this instead: ipmitool -I lan -U ADMIN -H *ip address* sensor thresh FAN1 lower 0 0 0
  19. Yes, the CPU fan pin has 4 wires (will double check in the evening) attached is the screenshot from IPMI web interface showing FAN sensors My go file does not have all the entries. Here is how it looks now: #!/bin/bash # Start the Management Utility /usr/local/sbin/emhttp &
  20. I thought the same and checked the CPU Fan I am using. It has 4 pin connector and the spec says it has PWM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118074
  21. No LUCK. Can you help me by repeating your wiring setup? FAN1 -> pwm spliter -> Case Fans and CPU Fan FANA1 -> HDD Fans Correct? If so, I shall also wait for my pwm spliter to arrive and try.
  22. Yeah, you are right. Instead of selecting an option number in pwmconfig, I was typing whole sensor name. Now, here is the updated config file: # Configuration file generated by pwmconfig, changes will be lost INTERVAL=10 DEVPATH=hwmon1=devices/platform/coretemp.0 hwmon5=devices/platform/nct6775.2608 DEVNAME=hwmon1=coretemp hwmon5=nct6776 FCTEMPS= hwmon5/pwm2=hwmon1/temp1_input FCFANS= hwmon5/pwm2=hwmon5/fan4_input+hwmon5/fan3_input+hwmon5/fan2_input MINTEMP= hwmon5/pwm2=20 MAXTEMP= hwmon5/pwm2=60 MINSTART= hwmon5/pwm2=50 MINSTOP= hwmon5/pwm2=100 MINPWM= hwmon5/pwm2=50 MAXPWM= hwmon5/pwm2=255 However, echo 10 > /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon5/pwm2 does NOT slowdown or stop the CPU fan. Any thoughts? Thanks a lot for answering all my questions!
  23. Will try. Regarding setting all thresholds to 0, should my command be something like this? ipmitool -I lan -U ADMIN -H *ip address* sensor thresh FAN1 lower 0 0 0 Here is the config I got from pwnconfig: # Configuration file generated by pwmconfig, changes will be lost INTERVAL=10 DEVPATH=hwmon5=devices/platform/nct6775.2608 DEVNAME=hwmon5=nct6776 FCTEMPS= hwmon5/pwm2= FCFANS= hwmon5/pwm2=hwmon5/fan4_input+hwmon5/fan3_input+hwmon5/fan2_input MINTEMP= hwmon5/pwm2=20 MAXTEMP= hwmon5/pwm2=60 MINSTART= hwmon5/pwm2=100 MINSTOP= hwmon5/pwm2=50 MINPWM=hwmon5/pwm2=50 MAXPWM=hwmon5/pwm2=255 Note that FCTEMPS is kind of empty, compared to yours! When I try to test it, here are my results: echo 10 > /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon5/pwm2 --- stops and immediately restarts the rear two fans (connected to FAN2 & FAN4) - DOES NOT impact CPU Fan (connected to FAN1) echo 10 > /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon5/fan1_input --- throws an error: -bash: /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon5/fan1_input: Permission denied So basically CPU fan is not changing its speed
