  1. What about this Pentium: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116950 with multiple addons (see original post). Is the I3 overkill or worth the extra cost. Also I am checking that a ATX MB will fit in my Azza Helios 910 with 3 Norco 500s (they protrude pretty far into the case). Looks like it will though.
  2. What about this CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116947 and this MB+Mem: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128592 I'll think about the Supermicro. Do you know if it is picky about which memory sticks you can use?
  3. Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I put off upgrading to 5.0 because my server was doing everything I wanted it to on 4.7. So I guess its an early Christmas this year! I'll start browsing around the forum for 15 drive 5.0 hardware.
  4. I setup a new key and pulled all the array drives and it is exhibiting the same symptoms. Seems like something is faulty with the hardware. I am running memtest right now to check the memory. Does anyone know of some other ways to test the hardware? Thanks
  5. I copied the flash then ran check disk - no errors reported. I booted the server and again and it came up stable just long enough for me to grab a syslog (see attached). Then the monitor at the console went blank and I could not longer access the flash share. Telnet works, my other shares are accessible and my add-ons seem to be running fine except for unmenu which is sluggish and most of the pages are not accessible. For example, when I go to the syslog page in unmenu all I get is "e </BODY></HTML> 0". While it is still on (for how long who knows) is there any troubleshooting anyone can think for me to do? Thanks syslog-2013-11-21.txt
  6. My server was unresponsive today. I tried to connect via unmenu, the stock web interface, telnet, and at the console and could get no response. When trying to connect via telnet I could enter user and password but no other commands would work after logging in. When I was at the console the screen was blank and no response from the keyboard commands (powerdown, restart, control alt del, etc.) it appeared that the usb keyboard was not working (no lights, even when toggling caps lock, num lock, scroll lock). Against my better judgement I decided to press the restart button as I could see that none of the drives where spun up. The server restarted normally and the keyboard at the console was working however a parity check did not automatically start which I though was going to happen because of the ungraceful restart. I started a parity check and decided to look on the flash share for a saved sys log. I could'nt access the flash share but I could access all other shares. I took a look at the current sys log and noticed some errors concerning high speed usb initialization failures and restart attempts (should have grabed a screen shot). I started to suspect there was a problem with the usb ports so I decided to cancel the parity check. The parity check successfully stopped but the server became unresponsive again. I checked the console and the keyboard would not work in any usb ports. I decide to shutdown and test different keyboards and usb ports by entering the bios and navigating around. Before doing this I pulled the unraid flash drive and disconnected the hard drives. I could'nt get any of the keyboard/usb port combos to work. So I think there may be a problem with my motherboard. Does anybody have any other troubleshooting advice? Here is my setup: Unraid 4.7 MB - Biostar A760G M2+. 1 x SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express RAID Controller Card (Silicon Image SIL3132) 1 x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 8-Port SAS/SATA Add-on Card 3 x Norco SS-500 Azza Helios 910 Corsair TX650 I run the following add-ons: SabNZBD Couchpotato Sickbeard Unmenu Crashplan Thanks in advance for any advice.
  7. The case is a AZZA Helios 910 with Norco SS-500 cages. There is room on top of the power supply and on the floor of the case between the cages and power supply. The later would receive some airflow from the drive cages and this area of the case floor is vented. Thanks for the tips.
  8. I have a case maxed out with 3 5-in-3 drive cages (15 hard drive slots) but the MB and SATA controllers I use gives me 16 SATA ports. I am interested in finding a way to use the 16th SATA port. What is the best way to mount a single 3.5 HD internally? Thanks in advance.
  9. Thanks for the advice. I'll wait until this issue is resolved to upgrade to 5.xx. I'll be certain to use an already pre-cleared drive for the parity replacement.
  10. I noticed several errors in my syslog (attached) that appear to be associated with my parity drive (smart report attached). I am using unRAID version 4.7. Here are some examples from syslog: Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 (Errors) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 (Drive related) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT (Minor Issues) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10.00: cmd 25/00:18:18:f8:f4/00:00:29:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 12288 in (Drive related) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: res 51/40:07:20:f8:f4/00:00:29:00:00/e0 Emask 0x9 (media error) (Errors) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10.00: status: { DRDY ERR } (Drive related) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10.00: error: { UNC } (Errors) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10.00: configured for UDMA/133 (Drive related) Sep 4 05:57:34 Tower kernel: ata10: EH complete (Drive related) And: Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: sd 4:0:0:0: [sdi] ASC=0x11 ASCQ=0x4 (Drive related) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: sd 4:0:0:0: [sdi] CDB: cdb[0]=0x28: 28 00 6f da 98 50 00 04 00 00 (Drive related) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdi, sector 1876596816 (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: md: disk0 read error (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: handle_stripe read error: 1876596752/0, count: 1 (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: md: disk0 read error (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: handle_stripe read error: 1876596760/0, count: 1 (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: md: disk0 read error (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: handle_stripe read error: 1876596768/0, count: 1 (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: md: disk0 read error (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: handle_stripe read error: 1876596776/0, count: 1 (Errors) Sep 4 20:39:12 Tower kernel: ata10: EH complete (Drive related) Do I need to replace the parity drive? I am thinking that I should replace the parity drive with a new drive and let parity rebuild. After which I plan to test the current (potential bad) parity drive with a few pre-clear passes to see if the pending sectors are resolved. Based on this testing I may add back to the array. Any thoughts on this plan or recommendations for better/alternate ways forward? Also interested in any advice that will allow me to upgrade to version 5 during this process/parity drive replacement. 11. It could be the battery or related to the usb port you have your OS booting from. I had the same problem when using a case usb port but when switched to a motherboard usb port the problem was fixed.
  12. What/is there recommended HD controller to use 7-8 HDs on this board? I have my eye on this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112339 Thanks in advance.

  14. The only reason I use a fan controller was to reduce the noise from the higher-than-needed-output exhaust fans. So no real need for one. In fact, I'm probably going to replace the exhaust fans with some that have the noise/CFM specs that I want without the use of a fan controller and get rid of the controller.
  15. My server (Azza 910) has 3 ss-550s and also sits in a cool basement. After I replaced the fans in the ss-500s with the coolink fans I also noticed an increase in drive temps very similar to what you report. You have them moving air in the correct direction. I think the issue is that the coolink fans move less air. When I compare the stock norco fans to the coolink fans there is a significant difference in air flow. The coolink fans are about 22 CFM I believe and the norcos are easily more than double that. After the coolink fan mod I improved my drive temps (now in the low-mid 30s with ambient ~25c) by replacing the exhaust fans on the case with higher CFM fans. I use a fan controller to reduce the rpm of these fans to an acceptable noise level while maintaining enough air flow/negative pressure to move a little more air over the hard drives and let the coolink fans work more efficiently. I also closed off all other openings on the case so that the only intake is through the drive cages and only exhaust is through the case fans (and probably psu). The only thing that I don't like is the use of the fan controller. I not sure if this introduces an additional possible point of failure for cooling. Maybe I'm just over worried but I don't want the fan controller to fail and loose the two exhaust fans. I appreciate any comments on the use of a fan controller in a server as it relates to reliability etc.. Hope this helps.
  16. I have the same case. When I had only one 5in3 (Norco SS-500) I noticed slightly better HD temps when I disabled the large side fan and covered the opening and sealed off some/all of the unused 5.25 bay screens. This seemed to change the airflow so that more air was flowing over the HDs.

  18. XBMC is a great free media center. A low cost HTPC with a smallish SSD and it will feel like the best media player you ever had! I'ev had so many media players through the years. I've finally found the one I've been looking for! You should also check out Openelec which is a version of XBMC designed to run from flash/SD card/small SSD that gives a very appliance like feel. I run it on a small Atom/Ion nettop and its great.
  19. If your allocation method under Share settings is set to "high-water" take a look at this wiki entry explaining how writes are allocated under that method. It may explain what is going on and that it is working as expected. Its late so I may be wrong...just a thought. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Un-Official_UnRAID_Manual#High_Water
  20. I have used the Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH for about 8 months and haven't had a single hiccup.
  21. Much more dangerous if you let ME play with them.... Can you point me to a good solution for VPN access, I would like to be able to access things from the road. With all of the server setup and IT stuff I have done (with windows, i am a linux idiot) I have never actually set up a VPN I have my router running DDWRT set up to act as a VPN. This works great and gives me full access to my network as if I was sitting at home on my local wireless network. +1. Some of the Buffalo routers come with a version of DD-WRT pre-installed with several VPN options.
