  1. I see I am now an advanced member...Advanced in age and in dumb questions
  2. Trurl, (did I get it right this time?) You are up the road a piece I would love to get together for a libation or two. I think that is about 40 minutes up I40 depending on traffic.
  3. Apparently, the system seemed to think it had to preclear the drive again and now it is formatting it again?? I just moved from the DC area and still go back frequently to visit friends. If you should decide to cross the pond again let me know and I will plan on being in DC. Can't miss me me, I am the guy who has all his hair pulled out.
  4. I can't pinpoint the particular post in that thread that lead me to conclude that this wouldn't work. After scanning the thread (didn't read 23 pages in detail) looking for another solution I reasoned that the problem was related to the format being used. I had a problem with Windows 10 after an update it showed my drive was no longer formated NTFS but a new drive format that I was not familiar with and I lost all my data and programs. That's when I dumped Win 10 and went back to 7. But for one App, I would dump Windows all together. Since I thought I tried everything else that was suggested I thought, I would unassign the drive, run tools /new config. rebooted, Disk 2 slot still appeared in the array but no disk was assigned to it. I then removed it from the include & exclude list ran tools /new config and rebooted. The disk was unassigned and the slot was not listed in the array. I ran parity all night. This morning I Assigned the disk to the same slot and included it in the array and it is now clearing the drive again and it needs another hour or so to complete. This may be a convoluted way to get to a solution but it seems to be working now. (I still can't tell if the drive will end up as XFS yet since it was set to auto). Turl, this is why I suggested in another post, that it might be nice if there could be some videos to address these types of basic problems for people like me who haven't had to look at my server or the software for 6 years. It just ran like a top and I didn't need to do anything besides blow out the case regularly to clean out the dust. I am committed to amend my ways and learn this software in detail and then learn Linux once I get through the next stage of upgrading my mobo, cpu and ram. I am sure I will manage to find a way to help some one pull their hair out during that process. I've already pulled all mine out. johnnie.black Have you considered adding walker to your handle? As in johnnie walker black? If you ever get to Raleigh I will gladly buy you a double.
  5. Version 6.3.2 I have tried to set the password for root without success. I can It only lasts during that session if I log out then back in. Right now a carriage return is all that is needed. It would be nice to be able to secure root.
  6. Re: Format XFS on replacement drive / Convert from RFS to XFS (discussion only) This was the topic I was reading about XFS replacement drive going into a slot that was expecting RFS
  7. There may be an additional issue. The drive I replaced was a 2 TB reiserfs. I believe that the system tried to format it XFS, I know the first attempts I set it at XFS and then I later moved it to auto.
  8. I took disk 2 out of the array. Ran New config and I am running parity now. It should be completed by morning
  9. I understand, there was no indication that there was any activity for formating or parity sync. after a period of time (15 - 30 min or more) the menu would show that the formating did not complete and asked again to check if I wanted to format the drive. After a couple of times of doing this, I tried to cancel the parity sync (the quantity of read write were not displaying on the drives) and then I would try to format the drive then the system completely locked up. Here is the current screen with the system booted in safe mode, VM turned off. This is the second attempt to format this disk this session. If there is a better way to do this I am all for it. 10. The formatting bombed. It now says the drive is unmountable.
  11. The problem was the system would lock up and I had to do a hard reset.
  12. I finally have it formatting the data drive. What was happening is the system immediately went into parity sync when I started the array and wanted to format the drive at the same time. What I did was stop the VM from the GUI menu. NO dockers and just a few plugins. Rebooted the machine in safe mode, assigned the parity disk, (cache showed up assigned, I used Firefox instead of Chrome). Started the array. This time no attempt to run parity sync by the system and I was able to start formating the drive. If all goes well I can start a parity sync after this done. Can I mount a NTFS drive and copy it to the new data disk?
  13. I read this. I am going through the GUI on the server when this happens. Could this be a bug?
  14. I am using the new GUI and I like it. It is very helpful with the plugins suggested in Gridrunners video. Version 6 is up and running. My Problems are as follows: 1. I have had to replace my Parity, cache and 1 data drive, (I have a backup for the data) All precleared (parity 2 cycles) no errors. All the drives are Seagate Iron Wolf 1 TB (cache) and 4TB (parity and data). I have tried every combination I can find to get the data drive formated xfs. Parity was left unformatted. I've read and executed everything I can find on line. When I boot it says configuration is fine with a yellow triangle by the new data drive (Device contents emulated). This has not been formated. If I try to start the array I get an error that tells me it isn't formatted. I go through the process of stopping the parity sync and it locks up and I have to do a hard boot. 2. Cache is set to auto. I am unsure if this is formated even though I tried to format the disk. Many times it is no longer assigned to the cache slot but shows up as unassigned. It no longer shows up as an unformatted disk.
  15. Turl, Yes I found it and I did miss it the first time around as I was looking for answers to specific questions. Frankly, I haven't been active on the forum for years and only became active again because I needed to upgrade from 2 to 4TB drives. This necessitated upgrading to 6. I wasn't looking forward to it. 6 years ago this forum was not a very friendly place for those of us who were stuck with Windows because of our jobs and needed our hand held every step of the way to setup unRaid. Once it was set up it worked flawlessly. I was functionally illiterate about setting up a Linux based system but I have built several dozen DOS and Windows machines. Frankly, preclearing drives was pretty intimidating the first time around. What I have found in this forum and with all the improvements on unRaid has virtually blown my mind!!! (pun intended) What I am suggesting is to have a series of tutorials for people who are functionally illiterate with Linux and unRaid. The purpose is to offload the bulk of the mundane questions asked on the forum and make it easy for new users to come on board, learn the basics, and become productive members of the community. There is a ton of stuff on all the new and exciting bells and whistles that you have added. My choice of unRaid after months of research 7 years ago makes me feel like the the guy who bought 1,000 shares of apple back in the early 80's and forgot that he owned them until today. It's better than hitting the lottery. My comments are not negative but I want to encourage addressing the needs of people who are acquainted with Linux. I am certainly willing to help because I will get to learn everything I need to know. Besides who likes to ask dumb questions?
  16. gridrunner: Love your tutorials. Gives me the immediate confidence to "just do it". When you are new you tend to tread carefully because you don't want to screw up. I am a newbie (6.5 yrs with 4.7) once it was set up it ran flawlessly. I didn't need to do anything except add new disks. As they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Just upgraded to 6 (today) to go to larger drives and I am enjoying all the bells and whistles. I would like to toss out a suggestion. Perhaps you could assemble your videos in a logical sequence addressing: Why unRaid vs all other choices Building an unRaid server with some urls to let people see different systems and hardware. Loading unRaid software and setting up the server (basic NAS) Advanced uses
  17. My concern is formating new drives and having mixed file systems. Will this cause a conflict?
  18. Found a loose connection it is up and working. I have started the array with the parity disk unassigned. Everything is up.
  19. Turl, yes I did copy the key and config files that were recommended but wasn't clear on how to restore them. As it turned out I had a different problem with a disk drive that does not appear in the list. I have since reload 4.7 and now it to doesn't see it. Accessing the tower is "iffy" even using the IP address from windows 7. I have been able to log on once but I haven't been able to since. I ran a check on the remaining 5 data drives without mounting them. There were some read errors on another drive (207). I am not clear where to go to next to test the "missing drive." BTW it was working fine before the upgrade and me inside the case. My existing drives are reiserfs and I see that 6 is using a new system for formating. Will this cause any problems going forward? Deboonthego, I think I will try to resolve this after I can see all my drives. One odd thing is that I have tried to create a password for root. If I logout and login it is there, if I reboot then no password. (not booting into the new GUI). Have I missed something? Thanks for all you help.
  20. I used //tower:8080 because that is what I used under 4.7. I've tried every combination I can think of starting with //tower This could be a nic card issue since I am using the one on the mobo. I can't see any of my drives from windows network either.
  21. I installed the new operating system. It booted!!! I can't log onto the tower with //tower:8080 and the network does not see any of my drives. Any suggestions?
  22. Thanks: I will start work on it today. Frank, I appreciate your comments regarding just upgrading the CPU. When this is squared away, I will start researching upgrading the mobo, CPU, and RAM. Turl, I will wait to upgrade the parity drive. My rational was the fact I have current copies of everything and I do not plan to add any files until the upgrade process is complete and running smoothly for a couple weeks in a playback mode only.
  23. I have all my data backed up. Each drive is stand alone. I want to run this by you to see if you think it will work. Rather than doing the upgrade on my existing 4.7 SD card (4 GB), I thought it would be easier to just buy a new one going from 4 GB to 8 GB. Prep the SD card with 6.3 and make it bootable. Remove the existing parity drive (2 TB) before plugging in the new operating system and replace afterwards with a 4 TB Drive. Run parity. I have a Sempron 145 CPU and I see I can get some multi-processors that fit this socket on e bay after we get everything else working. Will this be an efficient way to upgrade? Should I consider a new mobo, CPU and upgrade the RAM from 4 to 8 or 16 GB? While I will start playing with all the new bells and whistles on 6, in the short term my plan is to continue with my NAS function but I see this can become so much more. Thanks for all your help
  24. I really appreciate everyone's thoughts and comments. As a matter of fact Gary, I have an AMD FX 8350 on an Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 wit 16 MB RAM with a huge Noctua cooler in my windows machine running ver. 7. After I finish upgrading my server I plan on converting this to a Linux machine and hopefully be done with Microsoft. This choice allows me to analyze 8 songs simultaneously with RAM to spare. With 72,000 now and growing that will take awhile. I really don't mind hearing about the ongoing debate between hardware vendors as this is always enlightening and informative. While the debates rage on, the issues do change and as a result I have moved back and forth between vendors based on my applications. The best way I know how to look at this is how much the PC world has changed over the past 20 years. Microsoft was the only game in town then, not anymore. I am looking for guidance on current state of hardware and the pros and cons of various products. Real field experience is gold to me rather than listen to uninformed sales people. I have previously expressed my current hardware leanings from my research prior to building my Windows machine 18 mos. ago. This was the method I used to select unRaid 6 years ago. It was the best choice then and it is still the best choice. Like most people, I want a Ferrari with a VW price tag. It is nice to look good commuting but at the end of the day I need an economical commuter car. I will spend the money, if I can get tangible benefits. Having my system run cool is a big plus for longevity and reliability. The question becomes in a NAS application is the primary concern for me isn't computing or graphics. What I am interested in is the network speed and how many movies/music can be played simultaneously and the read write time of data to my green hard drives. At what point is it going to be necessary to go from 5900 RPM drives to 7200 RPM? At what point will I need to go 7200 RPM drives because of capacity? This is a simplistic view but I need a very good traffic cop as I see it now. I have been looking at all the new capabilities in 6, I will want to play with them and figure out how to integrate them with my system and as a result, I want to be sure that I have the horsepower and RAM to accommodate growth and expanding into new applications. As I have said I have been side tracked on other thing the last few years and I have a lot of catching up to do.
