  1. Same here vis a vis unmenu/bubba raid/unraid! I am happy to see I am not alone in this thinking. Add VMWare server or ESXi (Free) and I will go bananas!!
  2. I think you can pass the USB through on VMworkstation directly to the VM-OS. I know there a ways to do it on the server side, presenting the USb key as a scsi drive, but then I am not sure if it would read the guid. I gave up trying to do this through ESXi, only because I have so little time. If only we could do a raid 0 or 5 for the cache drive to speed up the transfers.
  3. Sweet! I was just testing with ftp, windows shares (xp pro) and was going to test nfs next. So far, it seems ftp is more steady, but you have to have two streams going to transfer at the max of 11-12MB/s with two files one of 12GB and one of 4 GB. Same test with XP Pro shares to unraid Using Terra Copy gives me same speed roughly around 12MB/s fluctuating a lot more. I am curious to see how nfs would behave. Is ssh also built into unraid now?
  4. Is SSH included in Bubba? Is bubba compiled for the 4.4 or 4.5 beta? I am running 4.5Beta right now. The only things I need are nzb, ssh, vmware potentially (I might go the other route host unraid inside vmware). Now if Unraid had a media centre server built in, wow! Imagine if you could hookup up unraid to xbox 360 for movies.
  5. Can you post your write and read speeds ?
  6. Is there a support section to match 4.4 and 4.5 beta?
  7. So far I have it boot off a usb stick. Even my laptop allowed it to boot (tried it for fun). I followed the instructions on creating a bootable esxi USB key and I was amazed it worked. It brought me to a screen where I can configure network, root password, and the such. http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/07/29/esxi-35-update-2-on-a-usb-memory-key/ "For those like me who would like to check ESXi 3.5 update 2 but don’t want to install on a local harddisk. Here’s a good pdf about how to install it on a USB memory key. It’s fairly easy and I just booted my IBM X61 laptop with ESXi. In short: 1. First get the following tools: 7-Zip(Free), WinImage(Demo) 2. Download the ESXi ISO 3. Open the ISO with 7-Zip 4. Extract “install.tgz” 5. Open “install.tgz” with 7-Zip 6. Click on “install.tar” 7. Browse to “usr\lib\vmware\installer\” 8. Open “VMware-VMvisor-big-3.5.0_Update_2-103909.i386.dd.bz2? 9. Extract “VMware-VMvisor-big-3.5.0_Update_2-103909.i386.dd” 10. Open WinImage and go to Disk, click on “Restore Virtual Harddisk Image on physical drive” 11. Select a physical drive 12. Select “VMware-VMvisor-big-3.5.0_Update_2-103909.i386.dd” 13. And click “yes” to write the DD image to the USB Disk " Now I have to create an image to test it. I will be testing it on my workstation class MB Asus P5NT, E7300 Dual Core, 4 GB of Ram DDR2 (nothing Fancy). I will let you know how it goes. I had to download VM Infrastructure client to manage it. From what I understand, the free version of ESX Server ESXi has some limitations, but it should be able to run on most systems. I'll know for sure once I put it through the test.
  8. That is good news! Thanks for setting me straight on the 4GB multi CPU support. I am still tempted to try it with ESXi as it also boots from a USB Key (very fast as well) 32 MB. I like the idea of having the VM host everything, and have unraid remain somewhat unmodified from one version to the next.
  9. I think unraid would be a perfect candidate for VMWARE's Appliances! Assuming there is not limit to the number of drives that vmware can serve up to unraid, and that you still have to lic the unraid code.
  10. At the risk of being shot, I have to ask a question. Does it make sense to run vm under unraid, when unraid is currently limited to 1GB of ram and single processors? Would it not make more sense to run unraid under VMWAre or ESXi and use all your ram (I have 4-8GB), and a dual core E7700 processor. Then could you not also have virtual high speed lans between vm's to unraid? Would this also not allow you do run several raid 5 drives to present to unraid if performance is needed, as now almost any hardware would be supported? I would use the Raid 5 for my Cache Drive (I feel safer moving data to it from my video camera if it is in a raid set) and later move it off to unraid. So you get the raid 5 performance for file transfers to unraid, the safety during the transfer, and unraid can move the files between 1am to 9am. The remaining 8 drives, I would present to unraid somehow. I really do not know, I am merely asking. Where is that bullet proof vest of mine...

    ESXi?

Can you create a virtual USB Key?
  12. Any chance of reviewing SABNZBD versus what is in the package now?
  13. The .info site does not work. Nor the .net site. I think they shut it down... I guess for now I will use newsleecher on windows and create .nzb files and drop thje nzb on unraid for nzbget to grab them.
  14. Thanks Guys! Now I just need to figure out how to stream 1080p .mkv files to xbox 360 and I think I am all set!
  15. I guess I can try it. I am so used to newsleecher...Thanks for the info.
  16. Does Unraid or BubbaRaid Have in remote sync options? Ie like DirSync Pro vs. Unison : http://www.linux.com/feature/154149 Newsleecher type app that I can feed it .nzb files? In Which Case I would want to use the Cache drive to download, par, uncompress the files, and then move the files to a directory manually after the fact. Ie TV shows do not move, leave on cache drive, watch and delete. Movies move at 4am to /movies.
  17. What is the cheapest dollar wise Motherboard that has two PCI-X 64 Bit slots, and two PCI-E 8X or more slots, 1 pci slot, and that unraid will support it? Of course the PCI-E slots should not only be for video, but should be able to accept two raid controllers for future growth. This way I can go either way Supermicro PCI-X card for sata, and if unraid supports the supermicro pci-e uio card, then great. I had a look at "ASUS P5E WS Professional and M2N32 WS Professional" I have lots of drives, and I am itching to build my next box, as my old one is no longer stable (8 years of good service). BTW, how hard is it to install unraid on top of an existing linux distro. This is what I want to do: Linux server, running unriad, vmware-xp-pro so I can use newsleecher for my downloads (no linux super search version of it), but it can run under wine apparently, also do my dd decrypter and dvd shrink work.
  18. What kind of transfer rates are you getting on this box? IOMETER or HDTACH?
  19. Performance wise, has anyone tried doing a raid 0 HArdware, and presenting that to unraid on any hba? What is the performance you get in vista on a file transfer using that card?
  20. Is there a way to run news leecher on unraid? I was thinking of doing a VMserver on unraid, and serving a stripped down version of xp pro with newsleecher and antivirus software. It would also be really cool to scan once a day all files for viruses on the unraid server. Thoughts, best practices, better ideas? I use newsleecher because of the supersearch feature, which does not come in the linux flavor, unless someone wants to port or code it.
  21. I would like two things. 1. an unraid that has a built-in vmware install 2. The ability to boot from something other than USB (non of my older servers want to boot from usb) even though they should be able to. Well I can boot from USB CD, but I tried everything with two usb sticks, on the supported matrix, and 4 different computers (1 laptop). Yes Tried usb 1.x, usb-hdd,zip,cd,,other...
