  1. Is it possible to setup two nics in unraid? 1 to be on the internal network, and the other to VPN out?
  2. Unless you have a Ram Drive for your Cache drive, and the power never goes out, then cool.
  3. As of Unraid 4.5.3, can someone direct me to the list of supported raid cards? Thank You...
  4. Now to torment you some more, what if you ran multiple Raid 5 Software sets on Linux or ESX or VMware/Virtualbox, RAN unraid in a virtualbox? You would still have the network as a bottle neck, although you could do network card teaming, and you could run any hardware you like (assuming there is a linux/windows driver for it). Then you could use up all the bandwidth your cpu has! Hmmm, maybe even run your HTPC with it. Wow that would be fast. I think I am going to try this with my test box... Grin. OK Gary, once you are done with this, you need to test 10 GigE vs Infiniband. I hear the prices are coming down to the point that for 3000$ you could have a SOHO setup. 10GigE ~ 1.2 GigBytes per second. Yes they have much faster options, but you have to stop somewhere...
  5. Gary, if money is not an issue, why not try a fusion io card for your cache? Not sure if it would work in unraid without the drivers, but then you know you hit the max speed you can have. I say fusion IO, but everyone has a PCIe RAM/SSD storage device today. SLC is better then MLC for long term storage.
  6. on board raid does work on this MB: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3630.0 but at the time (have not tried it with the latest REV on unraid) it did have a few quirks! IE not shutting down the two drives.
  7. Yes many older m/b will only support a x16 PCI-E card in the x16 PCI-E slot. You could use Supermicro C2SEA. I know the card works in either PCI-E slot (one is a x16, other x4), but I haven't installed two simultaneously; I can maybe try that later. Another option would be: C2SEA - 6 ports AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 ports Adaptec 1430SA - 4 ports Adaptec 1220SA - 2 ports (in the PCI-E x1 slot) there's your 20 ports. Curious what the cost on power would be for running all those sata boards vs a couple of AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 ports? Where would you place your Parity Drive in that setup?
  8. Save yourself some money and make your own docks. 10 minutes per dock. If you have a case with fans in the front, you are all set. See this link: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3630.0
  9. I like where your going with the par2 idea. For me I have offsite backups, but I wish there was a way to test existing music files for corruption (mp3, flac, ape, apple lossless...) Before unraid I was on a raid 5 software windows 2003 server. When it went down, most of my ape files became corrupt. ARGH! Oddly enough the mp3, flac, and apple lossless survived. Had I had par2 files for them, I could of saved myself some time. How much added space do your par2 files take up, and where do you store your par 2 files? I would not want them in the same directory as the files movies/music themselves. I am actually thinking of setting up an atom based pc for offsite Rsync type setup. Not sure if I will use unraid off site, although I do have a second lic.
  10. Interesting. Just what value have you contributed? Wow, this is turning into a flame war very quickly. The dramallama has no place here. GaryMaster: Please just listen to what the experienced unRAID users in this thread have already said, especially the Hero members. They know what they are talking about. For the last time, the benchmarks you are asking for are useless and don't apply to the unRAID environment. If you want speed over data protection and ease-of-use, then unRAID is not for you. Everyone else: Keep in mind that GaryMaster is clearly new to unRAID and comes from the world of performance-at-all-costs. He is used to the CPU and RAM being critical in any situation. It took me a while to get used to this concept when I first discovered unRAID as well (though, admittedly, I didn't get belligerent over the idea!). If he had a front wheel drive sports car, he would probably want to perform benchmarks on various trunk-mounted spoilers. (sorry, I just had to work that in there somewhere ) I vote this thread be closed/locked. There is nothing productive that is going to come of this. Wow, thanks for saying this Rajahal . I have not been on the forums for a little while. I was surprised to see how people were interacting all of a sudden, in a non friendly way. Now some of us do more with unraid then just a NAS (sabnazbd, VMware, and so on) and then the extra cpu makes a difference. But for reading files off the unraid server for 1080p movies, you do not need much horse power at all. I actually like the post about using an atom pc to do the work. Personally I have built many systems of unraid now for both myself, friends and colleagues, with different levels of chipsets, hard drives, cpu. I have seen performance gains (5MB/s), but only slight and not worth the investment. I even had an onboard Raid 0 working with unraid, (search for my posts with benchmarks), but in the end I preferred to not go that route, as I was getting errors with my drive not able to power down. I prefer to be 100% compatible and not worry about data loss. Instead of worrying about how fast you can write to the box, do your work on the unraid box so you do not have to transfer your files. If you are downloading, then do it on the unraid box directly. I recommend downloading to your cache drive directly, then moving only what you want to keep. That is how I do it now, and it is much faster. Also doing it this way, you do not need to leave a second computer on all night or day. GaryMaster, why do you want the speed so badly? Just for shits and giggles or do you have a need to fill? What we really should have is a list of tested GB switches and routers, Networks cards, settings. I have yet to break the 108MB/s ram to ram transfer speed between two unix boxes on 1GB, no jumbo frames, Cicso managed switch though. Has anyone tested 10G? Prices will eventually come down. I understand GaryMaster's wanting more speed. It is like a drug! In the boating world we call it 1 foot envie. We always want the boat that is 1 fot bigger, 1 Knot faster... Folks keep it friendly, that is how we attract more users and make a better product.
  11. I used to run 0.4 of sab, and it was always fast http response time wise. IO find the 0.5b5 (the aio package) to be much slower at responding. I also ran into a few problems, which prompted me to delete all files in the sab cache directory. OMG there were alot of files in there, several thousand files. I did not count, as I was in a hurry to get it going again. Is there a cleanup script for sab that should be keeping this directory clean? Is it normal for it to fill up like that?
  12. Well back blaze has 67TB in one 4u chassis everything in for 7800$US. Check it out. Yes they have two power supplies. They can fit 45 Hard drives standing straight up, and they run cool. 67 TB because they do raid 6. I think to go to that size, you would need multiple parity drives (2or3) to speed things up when checking for parity. http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/ No I would opt for redundant power supply and better faster controllers for that many drives, but they use this config in their day to day business (online backups). All this said, I doubt I ever need more than 19-20 drives worth, although it would be great to buy a 24 drive case and be able to use all 24 drives. The only thing that bugs me, is not being able to see the serial number like you can in backblazes setup. BTW, their hard drives are held in place by gravity, standing straight up so you can see the serial numbers of the hard drives. Makwes for quick in and out replacement. On that note, does unRaid support Hot plug SATA, or do you have to reboot everytime? I never tried it, I always shutdown the array, and reboot to change drives. Just curious.
  13. Whenever I go to RSS feeds preview or force download, I get this? Could bubba raid be interfering, even though all other menu options are working? 500 Internal error The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request. Traceback (most recent call last): File "/boot/custom/usr/share/packages/sabnzbd/cherrypy/_cphttptools.py", line 126, in _run applyFilters('before_finalize') File "/boot/custom/usr/share/packages/sabnzbd/cherrypy/filters/__init__.py", line 151, in applyFilters method() File "/boot/custom/usr/share/packages/sabnzbd/sabnzbd/interface.py", line 249, in beforeFinalize **rsrc.callable_kwargs) File "/boot/custom/usr/share/packages/sabnzbd/sabnzbd/interface.py", line 1847, in download_rss_feed return ShowRssLog(feed, False) File "/boot/custom/usr/share/packages/sabnzbd/sabnzbd/interface.py", line 2323, in ShowRssLog names.sort(lambda x, y: int(jobs[y][6]*100.0 - jobs[x][6]*100.0)) File "/boot/custom/usr/share/packages/sabnzbd/sabnzbd/interface.py", line 2323, in <lambda> names.sort(lambda x, y: int(jobs[y][6]*100.0 - jobs[x][6]*100.0)) KeyError: 6
  14. Anyone know if nzbget can do rss feeds? That is the only thing keeping me on sabnzbd right now.
  15. Has anyone tried creating a ram drive for their Cache drive, if you happen to have say 12GB of ram, and unraid only need 2-4GB of ram, the remaining 8-10GB could it be used as a ram drive? It would be perfect for most of my file transfers. They make lots of 64GB Motherboards now, and memory is cheap. Has anyone tried the ocz Z-Drive PCI-E 80GB SSD drive in unraid for a cache drive? I know the network is the bottle neck, unless you can get teaming working or 10 Gige or inifiniband. Some of us are crazy.
  16. Limetech, the link to the package download is broken. Can you send us an updated link?
  17. I think rsync and ssh should be on unraid by default. I really hate using telnet. Also with ssh, you can also do sshfs. But I would be happy just to have rsync and unraid in there my default.
  18. Glad you figured it out. Welcome to the unraid club! Sorry for the late response, I have been so busy at work, I have not been checking any non work emails...
  19. I received my power supply replacement, finally! So now I have a spare!
  20. Wow, thanks for working out all the bugs guys! I was going to upgrade my prod system, but I think I will setup a dev box !
  21. Hey silly question. I just switched to Linux 100% in the house. How do you install unraid on a usb stick if you are running Ubuntu? The instructions are for XP.
  22. That's too bad. I would love to run it on Linux Mint! (ubuntu based)
  23. Still waiting for my power supply! Yikes! I guess you have to have a spare all the time!
  24. Here is something interesting I have noticed since I switched my entire home/office to Linux Mint 7(Ubunutu+++) 64 bit, If I browse using network neighborhood icon in Linux, I can see all the accents such as " é É è ç Ç " , but if I mount a cifs share in the fstab, I see question marks and invalid encoding. Why is that? I am guessing that the network windows browser is using samba (which I believe Linux is about to drop for good), where as a cifs mount is somehow different. I tried /etc/fstab //tower/media/ /home/jdoe/media cifs credentials=/root/.smbcredentials, iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 Any hints?
