  1. Hi All, Many of you already know the AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 (http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/aoc-sas2lp-mv8.cfm), it's becoming quite popular lately. This controller's bus is PCI-E x8 vs the previous version AOC-SASLP-MV8 (http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SASLP-MV8.cfm) which was PCI-E x4. My current board has 2 PCI-E 2.0 x4 ports and 2 PCI-E 3.0 x8 ports. All of them are in x8 slots. Since unRAID v5 will have support for 24 drives, I'm thinking of adding a third AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 which will go in a PCI-E 2.0 x4 (slot x8). Will be the drop in speed noticeable? Regards, daniel
  2. I'm interested in a pure comparison between the Asus board + i3-540 vs supermicro + xeon-1240 at the same workload. The number of drives (8x 2Tb WD green drives + 1x ssd for apps) and activity will off course increase the consumption, but it'd increase the same in both systems, right? 3. thanks for that I'd have to read the whole thread, which is something I was actually going to do since I know close to nothing on virtualization, just have some experience setting up vbox in Linux and Windows My concern (not so much a concern as a "green attitude") is consumption. My current server is on 24x7 and I haven't set up WOL either, but I have an Asus P7H55-M LX MB and Intel Core i3 540 CPU, so it's quite "green". I'm guessing having an ESXi server with 2/3 active guests will be quite power-hungry That's the one I bought. I'm planning my new server having yours as a reference. Have you measured/estimated the consumption of the X9SCM-F-O + E3-1240 Xeon? Why is better to set up the UPS in win/linux than in unRAID? My concern is unRAID data integrity, so I'll rather have a clean shut down on unRAID than on any other. honestly, I plan to read the whole thing . I'll try to bother you as little as possible
  4. Supermicro calls there lights out IPMI, look in the specs for the mobo to find out. Probably. Leave SSH turned on in ESX then create a script to log in and issue the shutdown command. Pretty much. Just remember you usually have to pass through the whole USB controller since they are all attached to the same USB hub on the motherboard. thanks Brian
  5. I would imagine if the motherboard supports it, you could WOL an ESXi server. Most boards that you would use for ESXi though have a lights out management on them or have it as an option and those include power management and a remote console. Not sure of your intended purpose, but that might work. Do you know whether the SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O will support it? There are power on/power off rules for ESXi that can power off and on VM guests on system shutdown and boot. Just have to make sure VMtools is installed on all VM guests. Could I pass the powerdown script through unRaid? Pass through the USB port to a VM guest and have that kick off a script to run the VMware remote CLI to shut down the ESXi server If I get it right, I have to passthrough the USB port to unRaid, make the APCD addin to do a clean powerdown of the unRaid server and to run the VMware remote CLI to shut down the ESXi server, which through rules will power off VM guests (win+linux). Did I get it right?
  6. I think this is the largest post on ESXi on the forum so hopefully is the right place to post these questions : Is it possible to set up WOL with ESXi? how would it work to ensure data integrity in open VMs? How would it be the connection with an apc ups to shut down the system on a power outage? Please bear with me, I'm a complete rookie on ESXi virtualization Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
  7. and did you get Photoshop to work, including OpenGL support and 3D hardware accelerated graphics? what about PCi/integrated GPU passthrough?
  8. I am in the process of renewing my unRaid box with a Norco RPC-4224 and SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O. I was going to buy the Intel Core i3-2100 but then suddenly my desktop died, so I though again about ESXi. The only reason I would even consider a desktop is to use Photoshop and Lightroom, although I'm not really a heavy user on these. Do yo have any experience on running Photoshop withing a virtualized machine in ESXi. What would be the hardware requirements, mainly CPU and RAM? Would it be possible to run: unRAID Win 7/XP for Photoshop and some video editing A light Win 7 machine for my wife PS: I already asked about ESXi and Virtual box in this topic (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20605.msg182839#msg182839). I had made my mind (so I though) to go with VirtualBox but my desktop died, so the ESXi idea keeps bumping into my head
  9. Based on experience Did you preclear the drives? -> I have drives failing right after 5 successful consecutive preclear cycle, you are never too sure! Did you check the drives cables? -> I had a drive apparently fine which didn't stop failing until I changed the sata cable Are the drive cables tight together? -> same as before, my cache drive reliability was compromised until I untied the cables These are very nasty and hard to find issues, who would think 2 drives (out of 5) would failed out of the box? Also a noob here !! PS: may I asked you why did you build a ESXi server? I just post a topic on this issue (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20605.0)
  10. Hi All, Could anyone pinpoint the advantages/disadvantages of: Running unRaid within ESXi Running VBox within unRaid I'm in the process of building a new server and have though of building an ESXi machine, but maybe this is too much??? Hardware is not an issue since I already bought the Supermicro X9SCM-F (for the IPMI capabilities, I want a truly headless server). I haven't bought yet the CPU mainly because I can't make my mind on which option to build. What are the pros and cons of an ESXi server?
  11. Hello everyone, I'm planning to update my server to v5 once this is stable (which seems very close...) and I'm looking for hardware parts taking into consideration compatibility and scalability. I started another thread for this but thought that this might be a better place since you all already have experience with v5. This is the thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=19912.msg177004#msg177004 I don't mean to hijack this one, but I'd appreciate it if you could have a look a let me know your thoughts. Thanks guys!
  12. Sorry guys, I should have mentioned this. I'm planning a server for the next few years, so the psu should be able to support 24 drives. I usually use green drives, but for a few extra bucks, and if it's worth it, but I wouldn't mind a larger psu. I don't feel really ok with the corsair 650.. That's the one I have and I haven't been able to wake the system from s3.. Could this be mb related?
  13. Hi guys, Now that unRaid v5 is finally taking shape I have decided to upgrade my server. I could use my current box, but funny as it might be, my current server is more powerful that my desktop computer, so I thought of upgrading my desktop with my current server components and build a new one. What I’m looking for is expandability so I have decided to go with the norco 4224. Other components are: Server: unRaid 5- RC2 / final Case: Norco 4224 MB: Supermicro X9SCM-F CPU: intel i3 2100 RAM: not decided but I’ll go with 8GB, I’m planning on using SAB, CP, SB, HP, CP and VB Sata card: AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 PSU: I really need help with this… I haven’t decided yet on the PSU because my current one gave me some issues with S3 wake up. I have the Corsair TX650 V2 and the issue was that if the server was in S3 state for a minute or so, it woke up with no issues. However after 1-2 minutes, it never woke up and had to manually switch on the server. After much fiddling and reading through the forums I go to the conclusion that it was the PSU (sorry I can get to find the thread) What do you think? Any advice will be much appreciated it! Dan
  14. go to tower:2197 and restart server
  15. Something like this happened to me, I restarted the Lighttpd server and it worked then.
  16. I followed the steps one at a time and had no errors. I got it working right after install and before rebooting the server. The problem is that I can't make it to work again after rebooting. I tried twice, following the wiki step by step. Both times it worked right after install, and both times failed after rebooting. I never got it to work after rebooting.
  17. root@Tower:/# vboxwebsrv -H 192.168.1.131 fatal error: RTR3Init: VERR_NO_TRANSLATION
  18. I just realized that once I ran the vboxwebsvr command, the proccess doesn't run for long. I run vboxwebsrv -H 192.168.1.131 1>/dev/null 2>&1 & and next ps aux and the last entry is [1]+ Exit 3 vboxwebsrv -H 127.0.0.0 >/dev/null 2>&1 I guess this means the process stops almost inmediately, right? Where can I check the logs?
  19. In case anyone is looking or someone is having the same issue. I got it (finally) working. I was running headphones.py as nobody. I'm using unraid 4.7 and was starting HP as if I was on unraid 5. rookie mistake, but now it works!!
  20. This is what I get: root@Tower:/etc/rc.d/unraid.d# vboxwebsrv -H 192.168.1.131 1>/dev/null 2>&1 & [1] 9314 root@Tower:/etc/rc.d/unraid.d# VBoxManage setproperty websrvauthlibrary null /opt/VirtualBox/VBoxManage: error: Failed to initialize COM! [1]+ Exit 3 vboxwebsrv -H 192.168.1.131 >/dev/null 2>&1
  21. Hi there, I could attach my GO file if you still think it's useful, but there's no reference (yet) to VirtualBox on it. I'm trying the manual process to get it running before changing the GO file. I followed the wiki page and created the Vbox package without issues. I got it working and succeeded to install Win XP. I then rebooted the server, log in through putty and wrote these commands (I believe these are the instructions that should go on the GO file): cd /mnt/disk/apps/vbox (this is the location where the vbox package is) installpkg vbox-4.1.8-75467-unRAID.tgz vboxwebsrv -H 198.168.1.131 1>/dev/null 2>&1 & (to start the webserver, 198.168.1.131 is the address of my server) This is the output: root@Tower:~# cd /mnt/disk/apps/vbox root@Tower:/mnt/disk/apps/vbox# installpkg vbox-4.1.8-75467-unRAID.tgz Verifying package vbox-4.1.8-75467-unRAID.tgz. Installing package vbox-4.1.8-75467-unRAID.tgz: PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: Executing install script for vbox-4.1.8-75467-unRAID.tgz. Package vbox-4.1.8-75467-unRAID.tgz installed. root@Tower:/mnt/disk/apps/vbox# vboxwebsrv -H 198.168.1.131 1>/dev/null 2>&1 & [1] 22855 So I got it running without any (apparent) issues however when i try to log in through phpVirtualBox I got an error message (see screenshot attached)
  22. done... but I get an error I can't figure out: root@Tower:~# VBoxManage setproperty websrvauthlibrary null /opt/VirtualBox/VBoxManage: error: Failed to initialize COM!
  23. I did. I just configured a new port (8089), just in case, and restart the server. Still the same error. Is it possible I didn't compile right the vbox package. I did it three times though...
