  1. Success! I finally got archipel working!

In my setup I have a VM in my Production ESXi rig holding the XMPP server and the client. I then configured KVM in CentOS 6.5 in my development machine, and got it connected. So far so good. Although to be honest, I don't really know my way around in KVM so I don't understand how archipel compares to other webGUI options. It looks beautiful though!

My next challenge is to get all the xmpp server, client and agent working in the hypervisor. Or should I try to get a better understanding of KVM?

Anyway, I think I'm to leave if for today, I have a couple of episodes of SOA to catch on :-)!

  2. Looks great! How do you find the noise levels though?

well, that's quite subjective, unless you actually measure it!

For me it's quite good though. I'm using noctua fans (3x 120 in the backplane and 2x 80 in the case), but I'm running out of it 8 drives. I also have a small 1U case running 4x 1TB Seagate drives for an Nas4Free file server. And then you have the UPS, which also make some noise.

As this is in a small office, I don't really care about noise level so much, but I can tell it certainly quieter than my desktop case (which I'm trying to get rid off going the KVM route)

  3. If your hardware support it, as grumpy said,  you will  not have any trouble migrating the whole array (I did it myself changing ram, mb, cards, etc) .

My advice would be to start unraid vm with a spare empty disk to make sure you don't hit any walls, once you're confident your cards, ports, drives, etc are recognized, power down, connect the drives and start the vm. You might have to use the 'trust my array procedure' so I'd recommend to run a parity check before migration to ensure your data and drives are good.

  4. Thanks a lot for that grumpy, i do appreciate it. I've read it a couple of times but will have to go all over it again a few times so it sinks in :o

And of course if goes to my linux reference evernote notebook :))

I'm traveling right now and won't have access to my server until the weekend. I'm going to try to install the client and the xmpp server on a centos vm in esxi. We'll see from there ;-)

  5. I'm a Windows power user with no education whatsoever in computing. When started with Virtualization, about a year ago, i started playing with Linux servers. At the time I started with Ubuntu just because it's quite popular. I've read a bit and am starting with the cli (I've even done some scripts to schedule some simple backup con jobs). Not really relevant, but this is my background.

From following your posts, i learnt about archlinux and centos. Since I'm new to the Linux world, i thought archlinux was maybe too much for a newbie, so I thought 'centos it is then'.

What I'm trying to say, is that i don't really care the os because:

    a.  I'm new,

    b.  I'm looking for something headless,

So centos is good because I just started with it, but any option you feel more comfortable with would be ok, I'm looking for a webGUI as much as for learning something new

(sorry for the long post ;-))

  6. Have you/are you planning on testing archipel? It seems to be very aesthetically pleasant :-) and oriented purely to the virtual world.

I'm not afraid of the cli, for a newbie i do actually like it, but starting and stopping VMs or creating new ones for testing, etc, is just much easier (currently using ESXi).

I'm planning on moving to KVM,  probably on a centos minimal 6.5 distribution, and currently testing webGUIs on a centos VM.

I have installed ovirt, but seems that you have to choose between the cli and the webGUI.

Webmin seems good, I haven't played much with it though.

OpenQRM is another option I'm testing, interface seem nicer than webmin.

I wanted to test archipel, but it seems quite complicated for a newbie. Also, you need to install a xmpp server. Could this be installed in the same hypervisor or you need a different server? If so, could this be virtual? Got some homework for the weekend ;-)

  7. This is a topic quite scattered though many threads in the forum so I thought of creating a common thread where the experts can weight in.

The 'wish' would be to be able to manage whatever platform we use from a webGUI. There are many tools out there, but it's quite confusing, specially for the less proficient users, (aka me :-)).

Any advice, recommendations, experiences will be greatly welcomed and appreciated!

  8. I was wondering what the current list of possible AMD motherboard was. Are there any currently undergoing test? If so, please post what models.

I'd rather prefer a server headless install. No need for a desktop, one pci slot more, one gpu less

  9. ddeeds,

I registered for the forum expressly to post this.

Being fairly new to unRAID very new to virtualization, I found the guides you posted fantastic.  Based on your posting I am going the Xensever route.  You're a born teacher - very knowledgeable and able to concisely lay out guides etc.  Also, the community here was very enriched by your postings.

My unraid box has just been transplanted into one of the TAM Solution servers (which I upgraded a bit) and I was midway through your guide (getting into the hardware pass through stuff).

Thankfully I have been able to piece things back together through some of the backups of postings and my download of your custom kernels etc.  I would just ask that you try to be the bigger man here and make peace and don't pull the rug out from other kindred home server enthusiasts.

I would be up to donating to you and Tom, to get you together to support the virtualization stuff, as I think it is the best of both worlds.  I'd rather run my applications server stuff on a separate guest that is easy to maintain and leave unraid to do what it does best.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  10. Sorry it took so long, it's been an hectic week:

You need a static ip address for unraid (in my case 192.168.1.160) and the file .smbcredentials that holds the user and password:

    ubuntu@gaia:~$ cat .smbcredentials
    username=your_username
    password=your_password

You need to create a user in unraid for this to work, I don't think you can connect with root.

It's good practice to protect this file, although in my case, I'm sure no one will ever access it  :)

    ubuntu@gaia:~$ ls -la .smbcredentials
    -rwx------ 1 ubuntu ubuntu 30 Dec 16  2012 .smbcredentials

  11. SAN, thats Hot!

I always wondered why it wouldnt let you assign the drive.

Syslog attached, its a RC16c dev vm, I just brought it up and assigned one disk (as expressed above it went back to unassigned) and captured the syslog from that point for you.

    As stated above, this works:

  12. Tom...

    Feature request:

Can you make Unraid compatible with SCSI virtual disks (ESXi)? That would be useful for cache virtual disk.

Unraid only work with IDE virtual disks which is slow.

    8)

You can make it work with scsi disks (i know because I've done it ::) Beta quasi found out how (with some very small tweaking in ESXi)

I don't remember the thread but believe it was something related with pvm drivers.

Look for that, if you don't find it drop me a line and I'll try to guide you

Yep I have seen that before, but it would be better to work properly without hack/tweak.

It's not really a hack, is it? It's the way ESXi works and not really unraid's.

  14. I'm a linux noob myself also, but happy to help anyway i can.

I'm using ubuntu just because there's a lot of help on the web, but any option would be fine.

I'm traveling right now and can't pass you the fstab line, I'll be home in a couple of days
