  1. I am looking to update my current rig and move over to a rack I was recently given. Servergrade equipment is new to me, maybe someone here could help. I was considering the Newegg deal for the seaming popular Norco 4224 @ $300 + $10 s&h. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219038 However when scanning for deals on eBay I came across this used supermico case. $175 +$85 s&h so I like the price, especially considering that includes x2 900w redundant PSU. It also seems the general opinion that supermico is superior albiet costly brand name. http://www.ebay.com/itm/4U-NAS-Supermicro-24-bays-Storage-Server-Chassis-SC846E1-R900B-846EL1-2x-PS-/141841661060?hash=item21066bfc84:g:7KAAAOSwv0tU47SJ Both hold 24 hot swap drives, plenty of space for me. I currently have 10 3.5" HHD and a single 2.5" cache drive. What are the pros/cons of either case? Drive size? Transfer speeds? I understand the backplane has a lot to do with these questions, and there is where my eyes start to glaze over and I get confused. Thanks for helping!
  2. I am looking into purchasing the norco 4224 and am confused with the backplane and therefor mobo requirements. Based on your build, I don't understand why you need both the raid controller and raid expander cards? Doesn't the expander card support up to 24 ports? That plus the 8 ports already on the mobo, why would you need more? Sorry if I am missing something, still working on my understanding of the ins and outs of server builds and how they differ from a more basic home pc build with only 1 or 2 drives. Thanks for your help!
  3. What were the result of testing unRaid on this serverboard setup? Anything still available? I'm interesting in building a new xeon based machine and want to build inside a rackmount as I already own the rack and rails. Thanks
  4. Looks like it is now running the mod successfully with Java 8 installed. I am currently testing FTB Infinity 1.10.1 and FTB Horizons Daybreaker 1.2.0 I'll be sure to report if anything changes.
  5. java version "1.8.0_60" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_60-b27) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.60-b23, mixed mode) BINGO You got it! I'll test the new mod pack this weekend and report back in. Thanks so much.

  7. Hi all, @hernandito has a working docker for MineOS but is having trouble getting it updated to include java 8. Thanks for your help!
  8. thanks for helping me out! lemme know if / how i can help
  9. @hernandito I don't know if this is the correct place to ask, but the link for your MineOS docker "support" takes me to this thread. I am looking to get java 8 updated and am not familiar with dockers to do it myself. Could you point me in the right direction.. or update the docker? Thanks for your great work! I have been using MineOS via your docker and love it.. just time for a new modpack that required java 8.

    Help me upgrade

I am currently using a roku 2 for my htpc. What would a modern build look like? The xeon processors have so many options and range of specs I'm overwhelmed. I don't have any time constraints. I don't have a fixed budget, $500? I guess I would set my budget based on what improvements I could achieve. Thanks again for your help.

    Help me upgrade

Thanks for the help! I have zero experience with VM but I like the idea of combining a few of my PCs into one machine. If I wanted to combine current server and run a VM media PC (probably Kodi or Plex) would anything I have now work for that with minor upgrades? If the answer above is, "time for new MB/CPU/Ram..." suggestions? A new machine would be required to run everything currently, add support for VM of media PC to main TV in livingroom, potential of 2 additional "work" VM with light use, home automation software (most likely through a docker), hosting mineOS running vanilla and/or FTB modded minecraft server with no more than 6 users.

    Help me upgrade

I have been running an unRaid box for several years and now am thinking about upgrading. I am running 6.1.1 (Pro) and am using several dockers. Plex, SAB, CP, Sonarr, and Teamspeak3. Plex is currently running 1 stream at a time, but may need to do more in the very near future. Before getting into dockers I was only running plugins for SAB, SB, & CP with no issues. Now that I have a Plex server running I am seeing some slowdowns. I am interested in MineOS and experimenting with a few of the home automation dockers such as home-assistant or openHAB. Where is my $ best spent? Will upgrading the CPU make any difference? Swapping out the 2g ram sticks for something larger? I'd rather not scrap the whole box.. but if I did what should I be looking for? Thanks for your thoughts! Currently own.. 15. just to be sure then... you are saying I am good? The issues you were commenting on last week are no longer showing in my syslog? If you ARE saying that I am ok... should I just follow http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ#What_does_the_Red_Ball_mean.3F How do I re-enable a failed disk? instructions to clear the red ball? Thanks again for your help!
  16. If I use the Syslog page from unmenu it reports these "Errors" and "Minor Issues". The cache drive is working just fine. I just want to make sure I am good before clearing the red ball then. How can I troubleshoot at this point to verify that the Sata cables were the issue? Attached is another Syslog. 17. I have had my server off line for a little bit and am trying to get it back in tip top shape here. I removed the drives to check for any obvious connections issues, none found. I also replaced the 2 drives that I believe are throwing errors. WDC_WD1600BEVT-22ZCT0 & ST2000DL003-9VT166_5YD4P8DY. They were both previously connected directly to the motherboard. While troubleshooting I connected them to my SATA controller card, and I have left them there. Upon restarting, it appears I am still getting errors. Where do I go from here? Thanks for your help! Attached is a new syslog. syslog-2013-01-25.txt
  18. I currently have 6 drives plugged into the mobo directly. I am also using a sata controller card. the SAS adapter is using 2 of the 4 connections and I am not using the other port. I removed the controller card and reseated it, I also swapped ports for the SAS. I then checked all sata cables for secure connections, 1 seemed a little lose but looks good now. After a restarting, I am still getting a "red ball" on drive 4. I did reconnect the cache drive and it started right up again, complete with working plug-ins. Attached is a new syslog. syslog-2013-01-11.txt
  19. server has been humming alone nicely now for some time. issues started with strange plug-in behavior (not writting to log files etc), I assumed I may be having drive issues as my cache is a old laptop drive and was always expected the first to go. when I went to take a look I was getting errors on the drive sdd1. i attempted to remove the drive and after restarting the server I am getting all sorts of new errors. unfortunately I am struggling to decode the log file. I am currently running 7 2T drives (most are WD green drives from what I remember, others are Seagate) and the 160G 2.5" drive. I have been using the corsair CX430 without any issues. Based on reading this http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/The_Analysis_of_Drive_Issues#Drive_Interface_Issues and starting thinking, maybe PS is overworked? Server was constructed mid 2010 and most recent drive was added 6ish months ago. Thanks for the help, hopefully this syslog has heplful info, I wish I thought to grab one before taking the drive out....lesson learned. syslog-2013-01-10.txt
  20. My system went down during a power outage. So that UPS I have been putting off isn't doing me any good sitting on a store shelf somewhere.. but thats for another day. After rebooting and checking parity my array is working fine. However I have been using a non-array drive to run sab/sb/etc. Those application and drive are acting weird. My question, is this a drive issue? I am getting some errors but I am not wise enough to understand them. I've attached a syslog, hope that is what is needed... Thanks for your help! syslog-2012-08-01.txt
  21. Thanks so much! This did the trick! Sorry for the delay responding, had to put this on hold for a bit.... boy did I miss having this working.
  22. I honestly don't remember. They were new drives and I used screen + pre-clear to prep them. I would have been following the wiki configuration guide.
  23. I have only ever had 4.7 Did you by chance partition them to start on sector 64 originally? (before you messed with reloading the flash drive) I didn't do anything to these drive before reloading the drive. I did add a new drive that I will be using as my cache drive. This caused my system to relabel the drive order, but I had previously saved the drive order so I got them back in the correct locations.
  24. Same response for both commands. OK, then let's see if the file-system exists on the physical partitions. (perhaps unRAId did not connect them to the /dev/md devices yet in your situation) reiserfsck --check /dev/sda1 reiserfsck --check /dev/sdd1 (Note the trailing "1" as we want to check the first partition) If that works, and there is a file-system, you probably just need to set a new disk configuration using the initconfig command. so... my superblock has been corrupted?
