  1. yeah thats crazy, there still $300+ over here in aus.
  2. given i can get 4TB for $160 Vs 3TB for $199 i'm not to worried about 3tb drive support yet. it will probally take at least another year before 3TB drives reach anything like 2tb drive prices so i think all the other benifits are worth it first.
  3. thanks compass i'll go with that then
  4. ok thanks for the info, i will just make sure the ps3media server is running off my main PC.
  5. the problem is the board you talk about doesn't seem to exist for sale over here in australia that i can find. can you link the its specs page and does it have 6 sata ports? the only boards i can find here with m4a78lt-m have LE in there name. i guess i'll just go with the Asus M4A88T-M which has the realtek nic and 6 sata ports for the $78. will cost me about $30 for a cheap pci lan card anyway so this will be the better option as it wont take up a pci slot that i can later use for expansion slots. thanks.
  6. aww and here i was thinking my old quantum fireball would have a home!
  7. i only found out about this thread and unfortunatley i already have a number of these drives, 2 of which seem to be in the faulty firmware range judging from the Synology's compatibility notes posted earlier (both my drives have Z9 in there SN) now both these drives are currently setup in a raid setup so if i update the firmware will it affect this? or should i just take them offline, format them and update the firmware before using them. also 14 pages of this thread and i can't find any simple instructions on how to upgrade the firmware? any help would be appreciated, these drives are the cheapest on the market and if all it requires is a simple firmware upgrade to have them work fine then so be it. EDIT: NVM found the answer, thanks! First, download this program. http://www.hiren.info/download/freeware-tools/USBFormat.zip Then, you'll need the DOS startup files from here. I think all of them will work. http://www.allbootdisks.com/disk_contents/download/dos.html When you run the USBformat program, select FAT (or FAT32 if FAT isn't there) and check Create DOS disk. Browse to the folder that has the DOS files you just downloaded. After it's done, move the Samsung file to the root folder.
  8. hi guys looking for hopefully a difinitive answer on weather this board im looking at is going to be a problem. i'm looking at the Asus M4A78LT-M-LE 760G http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A78LTM_LE/#specifications which apparently has an atheros NIC which i can't seem to clarify with google searches but apparently people are saying this could be an issue? i'm just curious because the hardware compatibility page says atheros is supported http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hardware_Compatibility#Network_Controllers i can get this board for $55 AU and i really like it because of the fact it has 6 sata ports. there is another board in the same price but it only has 4 sata ports but has a realtek nic. my only other option is another board with 6 ports and a realtek RTL8111E Gigabit lan but it is $78. if anyone can give me a difinitive answer on weather this board will cause me a problem it would be greatly appreciated.
  9. thanks for this guide, i will pretty much be following it for when i install my setup. my drives will be the Samsung 2TB F4EG EcoGreen HDD HD204UI - SATA II 3.0Gbs, 32MB Cache. I have a few of these already and have had no problems with them, and at $88AU each there cheap! hopefully these will be fine to use with unraid. i also have a 2TB Hitachi desktar 7200RPM drive, firmware JKAOA20N .
  10. I agree, the Sempron 140 is lacking for PS3MS. Get a dual core CPU. I dont see this as being a problem if my mediaservers are running XBMC as wont XBMC just use the CPU from that computer, not the fileservers computer? also dont people run unraid fine on old socket A durons etc lol
  11. also one last question, if i use the free version to start with and go with using all 3 drives without the parity drive can i just add a parity drive later on once i purchase?
  12. yeah most of the main video watching will be done with xbmc the ps3s that are setup around the house only use ps3mediaserver every now and again and the main one which gets used for video watching in our bedroom is only used by my missus to watch simpsons and daria etc which are all only small files so never any issues there. thanks for the info about the mobo i will have a look at another option.
  13. hi all im looking for some advice before i purchase my license. im looking at creating a server using unraid that will store all my media and serve it to my HTPCs around the house that run XBMC. I'm looking at choosing Unraid for the fact it supports SMB, its easy to upgrade the array without losing data, and the support. I currently have a main PC that i use for all my data storage and torrenting etc that currently serves the other HTPCS around the house (currently serving 3 HTPCs running XBMC + 3 PS3s thru PS3media server) I am planning on building this server with new hardware and slowly migrate my current HDDS to the unraid server. here is what i have planned for purchase: CPU: AMD SEMPRON 140 2.7Ghz 1meg CACHE AM3 RETAIL BOX $39AU RAM: KING-MAX TINY BGA 2Gig DDR3-1333Mhz (PC3-10600) $29AU (will 2gb be enough or should i just get 4gb?) MOBO: ASUS M4A78LT-M-LE AMD 760G Intergrated Video DVI Dual DDR3 1800Mhz (OC) 8Channel HDAudio $55AU so for the price of basically a 2tb HDD i will have my fileserver main hardware apart from case and psu, i plan on building a custom case in my garage with custom HDD racks. Q1: what is needed in terms of power for a server like this? i plan on starting out with 6 2tb drives (maxing out the onboard sata connections) but planning to upgrade to an optimal 20 drives over the coming year or so. will there be any issues with a standard PSU starting up 6 drives at once? Q2: Once i get the server setup with 3 drives to startup can i then transfer data from my current PC to the Unraid server with no problems? do i just transfer it thru windows networking? also once i've transfered the data across can i then power down the unraid server and add the drives that i just transfered the data from? if that makes any sense lol Q3: I plan on keeping my current torrent setup on my main windows PC as is but just direct utorrent to the unraid server as the download directory, will this be an issue? Thats about all i can think of for now, any help would be greatly appreciated. Edit: thought of another one. in reference to the free version v paid version with users. what does this mean? if i have the free version i can't share any files from the server? i dont quite understand the users section.
