  1. if the PCIe card has died, it may have taken out other components on the motherboard that may be causing the issue you are seeing. new motherboard?
  2. If I want to watch some media, I just navigate into the read only share using windows explorer into the folder structure I setup and open with MPC.... what is the advantage of plex if I know what i'm going to watch anyway? using it away from home when at work? I'd rather just go out to the bars / restaurants than watch 480p episodes of south park from 1998 in my hotel room...? or is that the use only case?
  3. Due to power usage issues using parity drives I have changed my setup to have two unraid servers as a "live" and a "cold storage" backup. I like this approach better as it protects from ransomware/hardware/lightning failures, etc over 2x parity drives In order to sync my data I have been using winmerge in Windows and a manual approach to sync the data. This works well as there is only a few folders that change in a week. I have looked at luckybackup but it always creates a new folder structure where all the data is preexisting. Is there a better solution to what I'm doing?
  4. I'm currently using two cold storage ubuntu boxes with luckybackup installed to automate an rsync for 50% of my main tower to each PC, containing 8TB drives If you are buying this amount of storage and it is that important, perhaps it is time to migrate to tape backup solution?
  5. I found myself thinking of this, as it would help me a lot when I am done with my tower for the day/week and wont need it for a few more days/weeks. What would be great if I could create a blank file or folder in the /share/, called "shutmedown.tower" or similar, and by some check after a few minutes the tower would perform a safe controlled shutdown. This would be great timesaver for me, as then I can finish my work and then plonk the file down, instead of opening a web browser, login, find the page/ button, etc.
  6. I logged into my tower after around 1 day uptime with little activity to see if the drives had spun down and it saying I have a device under "Historical Devices", "Ultra_4C53....." does this mean my boot usb is about to fail?
  7. Hi, So I have a second tower with some old 2tb hard drives I made to test dockers out, and one of the drives failed (Disk 1). Never Mind, I thought, I will replace it with another drive and that failed to rebuild with a red cross. twice more this happened untill I have it starting to rebuild again. I go out to fix my lawnmower and I come back at 34% and it seems the replace drive that was suppost to be rebuilding (Disk 1) to has spun down and my Disk 2 has turned into an unassigned device AND still being used in the array. What is going on?
  8. Hi here is the diagnostics tower-diagnostics-20180107-1026.zip
  9. I started out three days about doing a backup (7TB of data) onto some USB hard drives using unassigned devices. I was using the Krusader plug in and that worked fine for the first two days where it was writing to the drives at 100mbs+ I then started the next few folders (1.5TB) onto another USB hard drive, turned off my main PC and then went to bed. I woke up this morning and there was no drive activity, but when I went to the web browser for tower.local it was VERY slow to the point nothing would load I then tried going into the main to see what the unassigned devices was and it only had 500GB copied. something is locking up the system I have tried to reboot the krusader docker, then the login window to krusader locks up on the same screen! I then rebooted and nothing changed I was still not able to login, I tried uninstalling krusader and installed dolpfin, which did not work at all, do I uninstalled it streight away. Now im looking at the front of the tower and it seems to have disk activity on one drive for 5 mins and then will jump to the next drive for another few mins. it then does this for some more disks and then the web browser GUI will come back to life The last time this happened it was suggested to increase the docker image file, which is now at 70GB! I am now trying to peice my krusader configuration backtogether from a youtube video! Is there a permanant solution for any of this or am I just wasting my time with unraid?
  10. I have ordered 3 of https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-IBM-LSI-ServeRAID-M1015-6Gbps-PCI-E-controller-46M0861-SAS9220-8I/192161127069?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 To go on a backplane and they worked fine in unraid without flashing the firmware I then ordered 2 more (from the same seller, about 3 months later) and they required reflashing to detect drives in unraid. I'm sure they are running diffrent firmware, even though they look like the same card, the two that needed flashing no longer have the webUI. I'm now waiting on the SAS to 4x SATA cables before I can try them out proper ( I only had one cable to test)
  11. thanks, that was what I was looking for
  12. I'm copying in some new data using krusader from hard drive to hard drive, and there is an error in krusader / unraid where I can start the move overnight, then close down the web browser overnight, keep the tower running, but then when I get up in the morning and see what the progress is, the disk activity has stopped and the act of starting the web browser allows the move to continue. how can this be fixed? Also if you click anywhere on the krusader application, the move file dialog dissapears and there is no way to bring the dialog back. seems like a UI bug there.
  13. I can't move the USB drive due to licening issues. I have two USB drives with a pro licence and a plus licence. I want to move the drives onto the pro licence, but that particular USB drive has a diffrent drive config on it.
  14. hi, Ive got two unraid towers going. one has 10 drives, the other 24. both are liceneded OK. I have backed up all my data from the a 24 bay array (it wasnt much) now I want to move the 10 drives into the 24 bay tower. Is there anything special I have to do when I install the 10 drives into the new tower to make that main? without losing any data on the 10 drives? Is it just plug and play? will unraid complain where the other 24 drives went?
  15. Hi, In my line of work I deal with multiple USB drives all the time. Is it possible to add a feature to either automatically or via GUI to copy all files and place into a folder in a share? it would my life a lot easier. e.g. files that would end up on the share /media/USB Backup/<USB Drive Serial>/12oct2017/ /media/USB Backup/<USB Drive Serial>/13oct2017/ etc..
  16. If you have 24 drive all spinning up in an uncontrolled manner, this would be a concern for the PSU which would see a massive spike. When the tower is first turned on, the SAS cards are intelligent enough to spin one up at time if unraid would be clever enough to spin up one drive at a time and then unmount it, that would be better for the health of a PSU long term. According to my power meter, peak usage was 740w
  17. Is it possible to leave the drives spun-down when shutting down a tower? When I turn my array off there is the sound of all the drives spinning up and a massive power spike which is not good.
  18. I have the same issue and I know it is an unraid problem. I have hard drives that I known can write at 100mbs+ and its writing to the array at 39-40mb/s. I had linux working on this machine before and it is NOT the hardware and NOT the network. It was the type of share working, where ubuntu had the same issue, but changing the share type and connecting in a different way get the 100mb/s write speeds back when will this issue get fixed?
  19. So i tried copying more data onto the share and then it locks up. I have to reset the server and the parity drive is missing from the config. I try the usual of taking it out, trying it in another slot, etc, nothing. I try it in my old server and it reports a xfs file system with 1000+ bad sectors. It wont even mount. This 8TB drive is a year old and has only been used to store data. It was the parity drive and unraid killed it in less than 48 hours with excessive read/writes.. I put it back into my tower and the raid card wont even make a single raid0 array with it. This is getting really expensive. How long to hard drives normaly last with unraid? days? weeks?
  20. Hi, I have swapped the drive to a usb2.0 drive (lucky I had one!) and I do not see any more parsing errors and the settings now seem to stick. The instructions on https://lime-technology.com/hardware-requirements/ Do not say anyway "Do not use USB3.0, it does not work". I read the instructions and got the drive it suggested so I think that needs updating. Look guys, I really want to like this unraid. It ticks all the boxes for me on paper. Linus is a good salesman and he made it appear that it was a perfect system that is all singing and all dancing but in reality it is not like that. Although I exclusively use VMs at work I am not intrested in VMs on unraid, but I thought the nas function was fully complete seeing it is as version 6
  21. I have bought a SanDisk UltraFit 16GB (thats the very small thumbnail) brand new from amazon last week for this. I tested it mit hw2testw its USB3.0 and it is in a USB3.0 port. I have tried the front USB slot and a rear USB port and after a few hours both ports lost the licence key. The motherboard is a msi z170a which has worked flawlessly for me in the past. currently there is a 6600k there, but long term I will downgrade to a pentium as I know I dont need the power. currently it is underclocked and thus less power used, but I will still not be happy leaving it on 24/7. I think perhaps most of the users here do not pay for their own electricity! What happens in the future if and when limetech go bust to the key then? I might have 24 hard drives with unaccessable data. What is the plan for this? my other main concern is regarding the rebuild times. Is this going to happen every time?
  22. Hi, so im trying out unraid 6 as an alternative to have data on shares and I am completly dissapointed with unraid 1. trial key dissapeared after I added a user so after I spend 16 hours(!) building a parity drive, I want to see what is is like to add a user, So i added a user and then took the share offline. then the webbrowser refreshes and I see the "no licence key" message on the top. Is this normal? if I spend money on this for a real key is it going to forget it from time to time and lock ME out of MY data?. This has happened a second time now. Not impressed at all. 2. anonymous logins are default on? I think this is a massive flaw, there should be some kind of welcome diaglog that sets this up. even my little 2 bay share centre does this! I turned on my old server to copy some files accross and it didnt prompt me for a user name / login! it just went right to the share. Looking at the default shares, iso, etc, they are all default anon login as well. 3. Not possible to change settings I tried to change this security setting in "shares" from "public" to "private" and nothing happens. I click apply and it just reverts back to "public" 4. does not default to GUI After booting for the first time I was not looking at the computer monitor for the 4 seconds it asks you to make the choice, and I was dropped at a CLI with no explanation on what to do. Now Im just a regular computer user and while I'm sure some people really get off on memorising all of the commands and think they are getting more out of it, but I want the GUI as the default. I can afford a KVM switch for this and that is what I have for my other computer and it works fine. I'm sure this is just a settings change somewhere but it is not clear where. When I pressed a key to change the settings on the bootloader, it just came up with a CLI with no explanation so I just reset. 5. paid support? really? So I will be looking to consoliadate some scattered servers with smaller capacityies into 1 server, so I would be looking at the full $129 option, I then check the support and see you are charging $$$ for 121 support? really? even after I buy your product for the full price? Not impressed by that. I work where I have to support my customers and if we said "i'm going to charge you $200 p/h for this phone call" I would be out of business very quickly. I think this is very poor. forums do not count as real support. 6. parity rebuild times. So I accept that at some point I have to do this, I left it on overnight to do this. 16 hours it took. how much did that cost in electricity? Now im thinking thats it for good and it will alter the parity on the fly when it writes new data to the disk? yes? So I pretend that I want to add a disk to the array and then bring it back on line and it wants to do it again? really? surely it should be smart enough to detect that the other drives are still there and not changed (thats what i'm paying the money for right?) So I have to look up and there seems to be a way to trick it into doing this, but is is full of warnings of data loss, etc. Well the data is there on the drive. it is not lost. Not happy about costantly performing this parity operation. It seems to be it will wear out the drive quicker, so a bad idea there. 7. locked out of remote web interface I tried logging on to the http web interface to the tower, but it did not let me in. it said unraid is waiting for password. I try both the new passwords for the root and user login and neither of them work. 8. broken local web interface There is often a "Warning parse_ini_file(boot" message at the top of the GUI, which does not instill any confidence in the rest of the system. I'm suppost to trust my data to this and there are parsing error messages on the GUI front screen? Considering I have allready bought the case and the CPU/mobo/ram is modern from my old PC and in good working condition. I will probaby just amalgamate my data into this 1 24 bay server using shares, because this unraid is buggy, expensive, power hungry (I'm not going to leave this on overnight so it can waste power). -Tomo
