  1. So I'm still trying to source parts and make a final decision on what I use. CEX are out of stock of the 10100t which would probably be my first choice. The 10400t is in stock - do you think this is likely to have any difference in power consumption over the 10100t? I'm also still trying to decide on a case. I discovered the Streacom DA2 which has about the same footprint as the Jonsbo N1, would allow for the same amount of drives (I checked with their support) and is available 2nd hand. Just wondered what opinions on that were?
  2. I don't have too much experience compared to others, but I can tell you what I had running. I had a gtx 1080 in a Windows 11 VM streaming to a shield tv over a wired connection and the experience was excellent. My son and I played fairly modern games like Wreckfest together without any noticeable latency. I did previously try an AMD card but didn't have much luck with that route.
  3. @Decto Thanks a lot, that was a really helpful reply and has given me some more options I hadn't considered. I've had a look at motherboard options based on LGA1200 and came back with Gigabyte Z590I VISION D - what do you think? The options for available mini itx boards seem fairly slim. In terms of drives, I have a 2.5" ssd that I'd like to carry on using for the cache, at lease for now. For expanding the sata ports, can I then use an m.2 or pci express expansion card to achieve this? The board has 2.5G lan as a bonus too. 2nd hand processors from CEX sounds like an excellent suggestion too.
  4. I'm looking to update my server hardware because my requirements have changed, eg I no longer need a dedicated VM, and I'd like to have a much more energy efficient server due to the current electricity prices in the UK. The server is also in my home office, which will very shortly become baby number twos room, so I'd like to make it smaller and quieter, and move it to the living room. Current build: - Ryzen 2700 - 32gb ddr4 - 2 x hgst 4tb drives - 2 x wd red 2tb drives - 1 x old seagate 1tb drive that won't seem to die! - 1 x 2tb ssd for cache - ENIGMA G2 650W power supply - gtx 1080 The above spec idles around 90-110w, but is now overkill for my needs. I would like it to function as a file server, as well as plex (and 1-2 transcodes tops, the rest is local streaming), file downloads and home assistant. After some research, I've been looking at the following: - ASRock j5040 - 16gb ddr4 - Jonsbo N1 case - Loose the old 1tb drive and stick to 4 drives plus ssd - A sata expansion card of some sort - power supply unknown I'm wondering if this would be suitable? And if anyone has other build suggestions that would be great.
  5. Thanks for the reply! It was actually your PR and instructions that got me this far, so thank you. It's for the hdmi audio. I have changed the bus so they are both the same. I tried to work out the layout Id, but followed this link and it's listed under a different section (first one in this list): https://github.com/acidanthera/AppleALC/wiki/Supported-codecs#controllers-patches I have lilu and applealc working (I think) after I adjusted the bus. Didn't know about the volume thing - will look in to that app. I have speakers attached to the monitor.
  6. With the help of some great info in this thread I've finally got a BigSur vm working nearly correctly. I have gpu passthough working with my GT 710 and successfully copied to and booted off the efi partition, but have been unable to work out how to get audio working. I've changed the XML to make sure the audio is on the same bus, but not sure where to go from here. Can anyone offer any help or point me in the right direction?
  7. I have a Windows 10 VM which I've had for a year or so running headless just fine with a passthrough GTX1080 for game streaming. Recently I've got a monitor, keyboard and mouse and want to use it as a work machine too. I have attempted to pass through an on board USB controller, but it freezes on VM boot. If I untick the USB controller in the VM settings the VM boots fine. I also have a Manjaro VM which boots and works fine using the same USB controller and GTX1080. What could I be missing that would cause this?
  8. I'm looking for some advice on a suitable GPU for my setup - I'm ready to buy but have already made a mistake once, so dont want to do the same again! The aim will be to run a Windows 10 VM for gaming, as well as a Mac VM for day to day work. These will only ever be used one at a time, so I thought a single graphics card would be fine for this? More on this below though... My current hardware: asus x470 prime x470-pro motherboard 16GB 3200 RAM Ryzen 2700 CPU Dell PERC H310 I initially thought an RX 5700 would be a good fit and so bought one of those, but stupidly didn't do much research. I still have it, but its ready to be returned. I've so far been unable to get it to work, and then realised I could only run Catalina on it (I have some 32 bit apps I need to run so Mojave/High Sierra would be preferable). So my questions: Would something like a used 1070 ti or 1080 be a better option? Looks like I could get one of these for a similar cost to the 5700 I bought. Would 2 GPUs be an option? An Nvidia card for the Windows VM and and older AMD card (assuine compatibility is better with older cards) for the Mac VM? I wasn't sure how this would effect my PCIE bandwidth as I've never ran multiple cards before, plus I've considered getting a 1TB NVME for the VM drive. Would I have bandwidth for this/what impact would it have on the primary cards performance? Alternatively if anyone has had success getting a 5700 working maybe I could make that work and find a solution for 32 bit apps in Catalina? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  9. I've got a new build up and running using the following parts: Ryzen 2700 Asus Prime X470 Pro 16GB RAM Temporary graphics card 4 x storage drives 1 x 256GB SSD for cache I plan on adding a decent dedicated graphics card in the near future for the single VM use. I'd also like the option of expanding storage using something like a Dell PERC. For the VM I'd like to add a dedicated 1TB SSD using an M.2 slot on the motherboard (possibly 2 if I were to run 2 VMs - not at the same time though). What I'm struggling to understand is how PCI Express lanes work, and if I would have enough for everything above/what compromises I'd need to make. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks!
  10. I've been doing some more research and have decided to go with a Ryzen 2700/2700x as I think it will meet my requirements at a good price, and allow me to create the VM for my wife. I'd like a motherboard that would allow me to upgrade to a new Ryzen in the future if possible. MSI B450 Tomahawk Max seems like a good value option and well reviewed, but would a different chipset be better for future upgrades? Something else I'm not sure on. I plan on getting a Dell PERC H310, and I'll also be adding some form of dedicated graphics card. Which PCI slot would the PERC run off?
  11. Hey all I originally built my first Unraid server back in 2017 with the help of some great advice here. A few years has passed and my usage of Unraid has increased a lot, and I have a far better idea of my usage requirements now. My current server (made up of fairly old parts) has been starting to struggle with my requirements for some time. I thought with Black Friday coming up I'd like some advice on what I would need to buy to achieve my usage goals. I currently run the following: Emby/Jellyfin Sabnzbd Radarr Sonarr Lidarr I would like to add: Nextcloud Duplicati A web server setup of some kind for PHP work Possibly a few other dockers along the way Currently I need to be able to run 3 x Emby streams at any one time, which is a bit of a struggle at the moment. I'd also like to future proof myself as much as possible with my motherboard choice (and choices in general). My wife has an aging iMac that I'd like to replace with an Mac VM at some point in the next year or so. Possibly also a Windows gaming VM, though they would never be run at the same time. Running 1 VM at a time will likely be a requirement at some point. So my parts questions based on the above info: What sort of CPU would be required for the basic setup above? What about if I went for the VM setup (number of cores etc)? The Ryzen CPUs look attractive price wise, and I was thinking about getting a motherboard that supported Ryzen 3000 CPUs, but maybe get a 2nd hand 1st/2nd gen one for now until I need it. Is Ryzen a good choice these days? Happy to go Intel if that's still a better, more stable route. Based on the above any advise on motherboard? I can support full ATX. Currently running 5 drives (including parity/cache), but would like to support up to ~12 (I see the Dell PERC H310 recommended a lot). My storage is nearly full, so will likely need another drive or 2 soon. Need to replace my tiny cache drive - what size is reasonable for the above? 512GB/1TB? Thanks so much for any help anyone can offer!
