  1. Here's the output from my run: Tunables Report from unRAID Tunables Tester v2.2 by Pauven NOTE: Use the smallest set of values that produce good results. Larger values increase server memory use, and may cause stability issues with unRAID, especially if you have any add-ons or plug-ins installed. Best Bang for the Buck: Test 1 with a speed of 112.8 MB/s Tunable (md_num_stripes): 1408 Tunable (md_write_limit): 768 Tunable (md_sync_window): 512 These settings will consume 22MB of RAM on your hardware. Unthrottled values for your server came from Test 22 with a speed of 114.0 MB/s Tunable (md_num_stripes): 4296 Tunable (md_write_limit): 1936 Tunable (md_sync_window): 1936 These settings will consume 67MB of RAM on your hardware. This is -93MB less than your current utilization of 160MB. NOTE: Adding additional drives will increase memory consumption. In unRAID, go to Settings > Disk Settings to set your chosen parameter values.
  2. I'm using Windows 7 Home and have no problems connecting to Unraid.
  3. No, the cache drive does NOT need to be the same size as the parity drive. I believe that use would be a warm spare just in case the parity drive failed you would have a drive ready to replace it. I use a 90GB SSD drive for cache. My parity and data drives are 3TB each. I mainly use my cache drive for faster write speeds and to keep the data/parity drives from spinning up. I write a bunch of small files to my unraid server throughout the day so it made sense to me to use the smaller SSD drive.
  4. Take a look here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5754.0
  5. A great thread on the subject: The 5X3 Cage review - Norco, SuperMicro, iStarUSA and Icy Dock
  6. I just built my server and from the reading I went with the Norco SS-500. You can purchase them at 3BTech for $88.99 with free shipping. The picture on their page is the old version but they ship direct from Norco so you will receive the new version.
  7. Let there be light! Preclear in progress. I plan to unplug the power led next time the case is open.
  8. I bought an IBM ServeRAID M1015 for a bargain. I flashed it to a plain SAS2008 following this guide. It's installed and appears to be working. I am currently running preclear on all five hard drives. Three are connected to the motherboard, one port 0 of the ServeRaid card and one on port 1. Temps are currently 36-37°C. I am using unRAID Server version 5.0-beta10 AiO, unMENU 1.3, and preclear_disk.sh beta 1.12. I followed the instructions to prepare the USB flash drive. I am using a static IP address instead of dhcp so I edited the network.cfg file on the flash drive listed in the config folder from: USE_DHCP=yes IPADDR= NETMASK= GATEWAY= to USE_DHCP=no IPADDR=192.168.1.102 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 GATEWAY=192.168.1.1 I followed the Configuration Tutorial listed on the wiki. I made a few changes to the motherboad BIOS. In Google Chrome I have to use tower/ instead of //tower to access the server. In unMENU I installed the following packages: apcupsd 3.14.3, bwm-ng, mail and ssmtp, pci utils, Clean Powerdown and screen. I plan to add monthly parity check once I have everything running. I still need to figure out user shares. Any reason I should buy they 2 key pro version instead of a single key?
  9. I just replaced the fan on a Norco SS-500 and the 400 looks very similar. Take a look.
  10. IRC is text based chat so it uses very little bandwidth. I used it all the time on dial-up without any issues. Channels can also be logged and that log placed into a searchable index.
  11. When configuring Mail and SSMTP I ran into a problem with my password. It contains the @ symbol (ex. pass@word). It appears fine after saving but when returning to the page the password is parsed with VAR surrounding it and sending email does not work. Removing the @ fixed the problem.
  12. I finished the build. Not all the hard drives are in but it boots and asks for the Tower login:. It's very quiet. In fact, I didn't think it was working until a saw the USB flash drive light inside the computer. I need to attach the USB drive to just below the motherboard with some velcro. If anyone else is going to use the Norco-500 make sure you have tiny screws. It took me hours to find enough that were small enough and you may be able to tell from the picture I still had to use washers. Here's a link to the screws recommended by Rajahal. Here's a few more pictures... Fan swap: Case exterior & interior: I will be unpluging the bottom two Norco's as I have no drives in them but I wanted to make sure the fans turned on. I assume I should close all the vents on them. I need to add the rest of my hard drives, run preclear on them, play around with unRAID and purchase a license.
  13. I like the IRC idea too. Most chat clients support it and there are web front ends for most of the major networks.
  14. Unbelievable. I have prime shipping with Amazon but I ordered these yesterday and they arrived today form WA via FedEx.
  15. Of course. I just have to get the kids to bed or I'll have lots of help.
  16. I'm happy to report that the Norco SS-500's arrived today from 3BTech and are the new version. Free shipping made it a great deal. Hopefully tonight I can build.
  17. I'm trying to decide whether to grab this or keep the Jetway MA3-880GTV2 I still have in a box (just worried about the RTK8111E Lan chipset that has given some user problems).
  18. The ASUS M4A78LT-M motherboard is available on Newegg today for $59.99 and free shipping. This is not the LE version. 6 SATA ports, 1 PCI express 2.0, 1 PCI Express, 2 PCI, Realtek 8112L LAN chipset, 4 DDR3 memory slots, onboard video. *Level 1 confirmed*
