  1. I'm currently running unRAID 5.0beta-7 and was considering upgrading to the newest version. Are there any issues I need to be concerned with during the upgrade process? I have the following drives: Hitachi - 3TB - GPT: 4K-aligned Hitachi - 3TB - GPT: 4K-aligned - reiserfs Hitachi - 2TB - MBR: 4K-aligned - reiserfs Seagate - 2TB - GPT: 4K-aligned - reiserfs Does the fact that some are GPT and others are MBR matter? I've never had any problems with the server and everything has functioned flawlessly. Also, does the newest version support 4TB drives and is it out of beta yet? I'm also wondering how I actually complete the upgrade process? The wiki page that has instructions stops at 5.0beta-6 and has no instructions for upgrading from beta-7.
  2. Can someone take a look at this and make sure everything will work together properly before I order? I'm looking to minimize cost with this build. Thanks! COOLER MASTER HAF 912 ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS AM3+ CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 430w Power Supply AMD Sempron 145 Sargas 2.8GHz Socket AM3 Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1333 I already have the thermal paste, SATA cables laying and an extra flash drive. I'm going to start with 2 x 3TB HDDs.
  3. We don't want you to disable the drives by turning off the SATA ports. We just want you to exclude them from being an available device for the computer to use to boot the machine. The server will still see and use the drive inside of unRAID because the SATA ports are enabled in the BIOS, but it won't try and use it to boot the machine. I said that it's common for a drive over 512MB to be seen by the BIOS as a HDD. But it might not be that way in your case. Perhaps this will help. Lets say for example you have a total of 4 HDD's and one Flash drive attached to your system and the BIOS is classifying the flash drive as a hard drive. The BIOS lists them in a particluar order which typically lists the flash drive as last. These are your available bootable hard drives: -HDD 1 -HDD 2 -HDD 3 -HDD 4 -USB Flash Drive When you look at selecting the boot device you'll be given a list of available devices similar to this: -CDROM -Floppy Drive -Network Boot -Hard Drive -Disabled Here is the problem, if you look at your particular list, it probably substitutes HDD1 for where it says Hard Drive. So you'll see something like this: -CDROM -Floppy Drive -Network Boot -HDD 1 -Disabled So the computer goes through the list of boot devices, only looks at HDD 1 and skips the other drives such as HDD 2, HDD 3, HDD 4 and lastly your Flash drive. What we need to do is disable HDD 1, 2, 3 and 4 as bootable device options so that the Flash Drive moves to the top of the list. That will change your boot device selection screen to: -CDROM -Floppy Drive -Network Boot -Flash Drive -Disabled Does that make sense? As you can see it's not the easiest thing to explain without being able to see your BIOS screen. That's probably because you haven't given us the BIOS version information. You gave us the motherboard model, but not what BIOS you're using.
  4. I just ran into this issue the other day so perhaps I can help. Here is my thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20812.0 You want to look for a section that says something like "Hard Drive Boot Priority". Inside you should find a listing of all your hard drives, including your flash drive. Disable all the other drives except for the flash drive. Then go back to the Boot Device Priority and you should now see your flash drive. From what I read, a lot of Mobo's BIOS reads removable drives >512MB as Hard Drives and not removable media which is what causes this issue. I would go take some pictures of my BIOS to show you, but it's running a parity check for the next few hours.
  5. Perfect. Thanks. I'm going to set them to about 80GB so I can keep the drives below 98% full. If I change that now will it keep the artists together from this point forward and won't change anything previously copied to the array? All my shows are done for the season, but that's a great point. I just copied a few movies from the old drives to the new ones. Each drive is showing 97% full. I'm running a parity check right now and then I think I'm good to go. Now all I have to do is address my cooling. Since I've added the new drive and starting running this hard with the preclear, copying files around and a parity check, the drive temperatures are around 42 degrees. I have a rear case fan, PS fan, and a fan in front of the drives. Perhaps I need to add another case fan on the side door or at the top just to increase airflow.
  6. Hopefully this helps. I think I have things correct as far as split-level goes. If I'm reading this right, the Moves share should keep each individual movie together on the same drive. -Movies --Movie Name ---Movie.m2ts ---MoviePost.jpg The TV Show share should keep each season together -TV Shows --TV Show Name ---Season 1 ----TV Show S01E01 ----TV Show S01E02 And the music should keep each artist together -Music --Artist Name ---Album 1 ----Song 1 Actually 2 of my drives are >98% full. So just copy and past a few things from disk1 and disk2 to the new disk3? Which share should I use? I don't have one top level share like they do in the picture where is says "Media". For me the shares "Movies", "TV Shows", "Music", etc are the top level.
  7. You are awesome! I went to \\tower\disk3 and created all 6 shares. Grabbed a movie from my desktop, navigated to \\tower, dropped it into the Movies user share and viola' it's now copying to the drive with 3TB of free space. Thank you so much. Is there any way to increase the 60GB cutoff for the High Water method? I'm getting random 10 - 30 second pauses when writing to the array. The Wiki says that's because there is more than 98% of the drive used. The problem is that with 3TB drives, 60GB is not enough free space. I know you can use Min Free Space, but I'm unsure how that works. If I would set it to lets say 40GB per share, isn't that cumulative? For example, setting all 6 shares to 40GB, would result in 240GB of free space on each drive provided I use each share. Is there a way to set that for each drive?
  8. Unfortunately, yes, I did reboot and it's still copying files to the disk with 56GB of free space. Excuse my ignorance, but how do I create the shares on a specific disk?
  9. I must be an idiot or something because I'm having horrendous problems getting a new disk installed. After receiving a bunch of help and finally getting the drive added to the array, unRAID refuses to use the new disk. I have these shares: Movies TV Shows Music iTunes Misc Media Pictures The shares that get used the most are TV Shows and Movies Both shares are set to Split Level 2 and High Water. Neither share uses Min. Free Space, nor do I use any Include or Exclude. According to the Wiki, the High Water uses a cut off of 60GB on each disk before moving to the next disk. My two old drives have 37.7GB and 56.1GB of free space. The new drive is listed as having 3TB of free space. But every time I try and copy something into the share Movies or TV Shows, it starts putting it on the drive with 56GB of free space and not the one with 3TB. What am I doing wrong?
  10. Apparently it decided to preclear the drive again. Everything was fine and I was able to add the drive to the array once the preclear was finished.
  11. Well, I think I broke it. After the preclear finished, I logged into my server using the //tower and stopped the array. I added the new drive as Drive #3, but didn't get a format button. I figured I had to start the array and noticed that there was a checkbox and a disclaimer staying that if the drive was not formatted that it would be formatted and the array taken offline. I checked the box and hit start. It said in the bottom left that it was preclearing my drive?!?! Now I can't do anything. If I try to open //tower, it just sits there. Going to //tower:8080 and it says at the top PROTECTED_EXPANSION, unRAID ARRAY is STOPPED. Is it preclearing my drive again? Can I stop it and just add it to the array? syslog-2012-06-13.txt
  12. I just created a shortcut on my desktop and pointed it to \\tower and access it that way when I want to add a movie or TV Show. Here are some pictures of my shares and settings. I only included the TV Show and Movies shares because I don't use the others very often.
  13. I currently have 6 user shares on the array right now: Misc Media Movies Music Pictures TV Shows iTunes Do I need to create all 6 of them? Won't unRAID do that automatically once I try and copy something into the existing shares? I'm not really sure how to create them though. Sorry for the dumb questions, but other than the initial setup about a year ago, this thing has been completely self sufficient so I haven't really done a lot with it besides copying stuff from my desktop using windows explorer.
  14. Thanks again for all your help with my questions. Any thoughts on the easiest way to move data from the two currently full drives to the new one after it's added to the array? Can I just cut a few movies from the array and then add them back? I"m using High Water so I would assume that since the new drive has the least amount of space, everything would be written to that drive. I found the "Min free space" option, but that seems to be share specific and not disk specific so I don't think that will do what I want.
  15. Well, my drive is in the Post-Read stage and will be ready for the array in a few hours. I was looking over Joe L.'s preclear thread and have a question. He has this listed in red at the bottom of the post:
  16. I figured out the problem. The BIOS decided that it was trying to help and setting the new HDD as the primary boot device. I figured that would happen so when I booted, I changed it back to "Removable Media". Unfortunately, I later found out that flash drives over 512MB are seen by the BIOS as Hard Drives and not Removable Media. When I went to choose the correct boot device, the BIOS shows you the following: REMOVABLE MEDIA Name of SATA 1 HDD CDROM FLOPPY DISABLED Since the BIOS categorized my flash drive as a hard drive and not removable media the system wouldn't boot. The problem was that there was no option to choose the Flash Drive because it was the last drive on the list and wasn't shown. I had to go into the Boot Disk Priorities menu and disable all of the hard drives as available boot options which forced the flash drive to the top. It then appeared in place of the SATA 1 HDD from above. I was able to select it as the boot device and the server is up and running.
  17. I just upgraded from the free version to the plus version and followed the instructions provided in the email. I copied the Plus.key file to the flash drive from within Windows Explorer, stopped the array and then rebooted. Everything was fine. When I got home, I powered down the machine, disconnected everything and installed a new 3TB HDD. Plugged in the flash drive and I'm getting an error telling me that my system contains no bootable media. I checked the BIOS and the 1st and only boot device I have selected is "Removable Media". The system is showing Disk 5 in the BIOS as Patriot Media so it does see the flash drive. I tried disconnecting the new HDD, but that didn't work either. I plugged the flash drive into my desktop and everything seems to be there. Am I missing something?
  18. Awesome. I have this written down for the next time. cd /boot screen preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdX Where "X" is the designator I was going to start another thread, but I guess I can put it here. I found this where it says you shouldn't fill up your drives. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Improving_unRAID_Performance#Avoid_filling_drives_.3E99.25 Unfortunately, I already have filled them up. One 3TB only has 7.9GB free and shows as 100% full and the 2TB only has 9.5GB free and is also showing up as 100% full. What's the easiest way to move some data from those drives to the new one once the drive is added to the array? Can I just grab a couple movie folders, copy them to the desktop and then back again? Do I have to change a setting somewhere telling unRAID that I don't want the drive filled past 95%? I have been experiencing the pauses talked about in the Wiki article apparently due them being filled.
  19. So my command for the preclear will become: ./preclear_script.sh /dev/sdX -A Substituting the drive designation for "X" in the web interface?
  20. The specs according to the manufacturer, or is this a screen in the web interface? I ordered this 3TB Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148844 I just checked and I do have screen installed. So if I follow the instructions here, I can close the telnet session after running the command, then reconnect to the session and run screen again to check on the progress? Is there a command I have to enter to view the preclear progress, or does it automatically appear when I run screen? http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Configuration_Tutorial#Preclearing_With_Screen Thanks again for the help!
  21. I'll have to look around and see if I can find out if my disk needs the "-a" attribute. I saw that listed somewhere but haven't yet found a listing of what drives require that step. I'm glad you told me about having to leave the telnet session up the entire time. I would have probably just closed the session and expected that it would keep going on its own.
  22. I just upgraded to the Plus version and purchased another 3TB HDD that should arrive today. I just want to make sure I have the pre-clear correct because it's been a long time since I set up the array. Can you run the pre-clear from a telnet session or should it be done by hooking up a keyboard and monitor to the server? Steps to run preclear: Stop Array Power off server Install new HDD Boot server and log into web interface Find drive letter of new HDD using serial number Log into telnet session as "root" user Type "./preclear_script.sh /dev/sdX" substituting "X" for drive letter in previous step Is that correct?
  23. I didn't edit the .conf file because in the link you gave me, Joe L. posted "I did add a new field on the config screen for revaliases. It does nothing if left blank." I assumed that all I had to do was add my address in the RevAliases field and that would substitute for editing the .config file?
  24. I tried everything listed in those threads. I tried both port 465 and 587 along with using localhost and the domain that I own (www.mydomain.com). I also added [email protected] in the RevAlias box. Unfortunately none of that worked. No email and no error in the telnet session. Using the script I still get the "Exec format error". Thanks for sticking with me on this one.
  25. In that case, I think I'll just leave everything alone for now. Thanks again for your help!
