  1. Awesome. I'll give that a go when you post the link.
  2. Booting from an Ubuntu USB works perfectly. Confusing eh?
  3. I have tried a complete reset of the BIOS and nothing I do works
  4. Just tried manually creating a disk for 6.3.5 and it still fails. What is confusing me is the fact that When I first tried the trial version in November of last year, the hardware was identical, I downloaded the current version as of November, made a disk with the creator tool and it just worked. No special settings or anything. Now, no disks I make work and I can no longer get my trial drive to boot either. I just cannot understand why one day it boots and the next it doesn't. I honestly cannot think of anything that changed.
  5. Not 100% sure yet but not gaming. Any recommendations for changes I should make?
  6. Just a quick question. I am going to test out the ideas posted above (hopefully tommorrow) but as I know that my hardware well and truely needs updating I have started thinking about some components and put together a list linked below. Can someone give this a run over and see if this all looks suitable. My aims for using Unraid is to have it as a file server, a time machine backup destination, a Plex media server (pretty much solely a single stream, only me here) and quite possibly a Windows 10 VM. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/rctneil/saved/7wDRGX I will get back to you all with results of tomorrows tests too. Thanks
  7. I'll give that a shot. Most probably over this weekend. I'll get back to you. Thanks
  8. Hmmm interesting. I'm practically out of ideas now I fail to get it running on one other machine but works fine on another one. How on earth is this possible?
  9. Just a quick update. Using the same drive as I tried on the Samsung RV511. No changes whatsoever. Just unplugged from the laptop and plugged into another machine. This time with an Asus P5Q mobo. It fails on that too. I just get the error shown in the photo.
  10. I haven't. Might try that.
  11. Yes, I tried that a while ago. No luck. Thanks for the suggestion though.
  12. Right, Just manually made a new drive with 6.5.1 and EFI boot selected. Tried it on a Samsung RV511 laptop and it boots. Does this mean it's my hardware? Apart from failing to boot into Unraid, my system does seem to be acting normally. I am at a total loss. I have even been pricing out new hardware but I honestly really don;t want new hardware right now if I can help it. That would be best a bit further down the road.
  13. I've been trying so many different combinations of things and it still won't start up. What I have been getting more of is just a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen. I'm wondering if it has booted from the drive correctly and then something is going wrong inside Unraid? What do you think @limetech ? No matter how long I leave it it just carries on like that. I do actually think it's booting from the USB drive ok. I've never had issues with it booting from USB when i used this board previously. I think it's the setup of the drive or the software. As stated, it boots from the drive into an Ubuntu live system perfectly first time. No issues whatsoever.
  14. Thanks, will take a look at that. Is this just with 6.5.0 though? I am trying to get 6.4.1 running and that's what i have been downloading / choosing in the usb creator tool. My config is all configured to 6.4.1 etc so wanted to get that up and running before upgrading to 6.5.0. I'm honestly not 100% sure whether my board supports EFI etc? Should I be enabling EFI when creating the drive or not? I can't find a concise answer about whether my board supports it or not.
  15. Ok, I just used did a manual USB creation on my new drive. Wasn't sure whether to use UEFI or not so I first chose yes and tried that, it failed. Then I came back, formatted the drive, copied the files across and this time chose No. That also failed. I have tried to use the make bootable file after the usb creation tool sometime ago and that also didn't work. I'm at a complete loss. Why should Ubuntu boot from the drive but not Unraid?
  16. To be perfectly honest, I have no idea. I opened Etcher, drag the downloaded Ubuntu image onto it, select the drive I want it to be written to and click Write. And off it goes. It just works. Sorry I can't be of more help. Is there a way I can find out?
  17. @limetech Just to be sure, I used my brand new usb drive and made another Ubuntu boot disk and tried that and it boots perfectly into there.
  18. It's not installing Ubuntu, I followed the guide on their website to create a bootable drive. Downloaded the main file and used Etcher to make it a bootable Ubuntu drive. Guide I used: https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-macos#0
  19. I used the USB Creator Tool for that with 6.4.0 It just shows up as "Generic USB". Just one of those cheapy ones from a tradeshow. It worked perfectly to trial it with. My intention all along was the swap it out with a better one before purchasing a license. What's bugging me now is that i've just tried booting to the trial but that also fails to get into Unraid. Everything is configured as it was and it still fails. As said previously, I can create an Ubuntu bootble disk on the same new usb drive and it boots fine! I'm really starting to get aggravated by this and wondering if it's worth bothering at all. Neil
  20. I've been having a mess around with all sorts of different settings in the BIOS. Nothing seems to work whatsoever. I get 3 differing outcomes and can't predictably say which will happen each time I boot. Sometimes I get "Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key." Othertimes I get a Non system disk error saying the disk is not bootable. and thirdly I sometimes get just a flashing "_" character in the top left. It continues to flash and nothing ever happens from that point on. I have looked at this thread: and tried a whole load of the options there as the BIOS seems to been laid out very similarly to my own. No luck either. AAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
  21. Just tried to boot up from it on my Macbook Air. It sees the drive but freezes when I select to boot from it. I don't have anything else to test it on.
  22. I only have a Macbook to test on. Can I boot from the drive using that?
  23. Right, just tried following that to the letter and it still doesn't work. It boots and I get "Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key." Please be aware that I have tried making a bootable Ubuntu drive using this exact same drive and that works perfectly.
  24. Ah ok, Yesterday I tried making a 6.4.0 drive using the creator tool but that also failed. Anyone else have any ideas about this? I'm totally stuck now. Tried everything I can think of. @limetech Any thoughts? I want to purchase a license but can't if I can't get into the OS!
  25. Just a quick update here: Just updated my motherboards BIOS to 3002 which is the latest available. No different. Just been through and tried each one of those options one at a time and no luck. I have also tried downloading the Ubuntu installer and making a bootable USB drive from that. That boots perfectly and I get into Ubuntu. I still need to try using the creator tool to build a 6.4.0 build drive. The annoying thing is, is that I would like to continue to use my 6.4.1 config that's all set up and configured.
