  1. question what if you have 24 drives to preclear?
  2. Update looks like i will be using a i8700 paired with a Classified FTW , my 850+gold psu and a Hyper 212x,. Should net me a higher cpu passmark for plex even at stock speeds vs a 7700k at 4.7 ghz, Is there any reason unraid would need a beefy video card other than to help plex transcode? The super nova 650 will be sold and will use the 240 rad in a different pc build in the future. What a deal 219.00 shipped to the house. QTY PRICE EVGA Z370 FTW, 134-KS-E377-KR, LGA 1151, Intel Z370, HDMI, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.1, USB 3.0, ATX, Intel Motherboard Item #: 134-KS-E377-KR ($219.99 each) 1 $219.99 EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G1+, 80 Plus Gold 650W, Fully Modular, FDB Fan, 10 Year Warranty, Includes Power ON Self Tester, Power Supply 120-GP-0650-X1 Item #: 120-GP-0650-X1 ($109.99 each) 1 $109.99 EVGA CLC 240 Liquid / Water CPU Cooler, RGB LED Cooling 400-HY-CL24-V1 Item #: 400-HY-CL24-V1 ($119.99 each) 1 $119.99 Promotion Discount Coupon #: DC:518-JU-7416-01 1 ($230.00) Subtotal: $219.97 Tax (0.00%): $0.00 Shipping via UPS Ground: $0.00 Order Total: $219.97
  3. Its ok because i have to take out the fan bracket when i run my cables. I have left over 120mm fans which are quieter and produce better airflow. Just ordered Six 32" SAS cables for 24.00 shipped.. Not bad , will have alot of extra cable and will just zip tie them off. 15 inch cables in the norco were kinda short,
  4. I was going to go with Nocua 1300 pwms figured id save myself 42 bucks buying 3x fans then I found my 2xcougar fans 800-1500 RPM with anti vibration pads down in the basement, and will be using a 120mm corsair fan that lights up red. The corsair fan is not as quiet as the cougar but i am sure this combo fan setup in the Norco 4224 will help with noise and airflow alot vs the stock fans which i heard were atrocious . I will leave the 80mm fans at the rear stock. Not too concerned about noise since this case will be in the basement where it is cool and dry
  5. Thanks I will go ahead and order my sas cables and run the SSDs off the motherboard with Sata cables.. Makes sense thanks johnnie should i be concerned about buying sas cables on ebay that might be only 3gbps?
  6. Forgot to mention I got a deal on ebay for the 2x dell raid controllers H310 which i will be flashing and the intel sas expander , all for 55.00 dollars. shipped ....
  7. Just received my Norco 4224, paid about 350.00 delivered.. Build quality seems ok for me , although would have preferred a used supermicro case, could not find one that would suit me for under 400.00 with a decent backplane. Had a few question I received TWO 2X ., Dell PERC H310 8-Port Internal 6Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID Controller HV52W and a Intel RAID Storage Controller Res2sv240 E91267-203 SAS SATA 6gb 24 Port I plan on using two 1TB SSDs as Cache drives , my Z270 , 32gb ram , 7700k Asrock Tachi has 6gbps sata ports, i belive the backplace is 12gbps sas 2.0 I plan on running Unraid with 24 , 8 TB drives using the two raid cards and my intel raid 24 port sas expander , giving me access to 32 hard drives As for the Unraid OS i am assuming this will be run off the USB stick and my cache drives can run off my dell 8x raid controller using the Sas forward breakout cables.. Or should i just do Sata to Sata on the SSDs to the motherboard? Since plex does not need a GPU I plan on using my onboard 7700k graphics, now maybe someone can give me some advice with plex on here. Do I need a dedicated grpaphics to transcode /or direct stream 10bit 4k UHD , talking 50+gb movies? If so i have a spare GTX 1080. If i do this setup I will have to give my intel Sas expander dedicated 5v power and mount in the case somewhere. I would prefer to do this to free up a PCI slot since the sas expander will not have a spot with a graphics card. attached is pictures of the Norco 4224 should six SAS ports, one of the Dell HDD controller and my intel sas expander. Thanks
  8. might have to hold out on cables until i verify the backplane on these norcos 4224 they might come with mini sas now worse comes to worse i will keep a few cables and send back the rest for future use.
  9. Its reverse i looked on reviews and forums what people have bought.. They are sata connections on the backplane ,
  10. Cool thanks for the headsup on the SSD cache pool , i bet it helps alot.. What type of reads and writes will i get you think? Also will subscribe to his channel thanks!
  11. I can post them here but might take a few weeks... I am going away in 2 weeks but i am thinking sometime end of july it should be completed when i get back. I was thinking i could go free Nas and RAID but no ECC and The reason i like unraid is because all my disks wont be accessing when streaming since the data is not striped , and if you lose a disk and something awful happens where it cannot be restored i guess that data is only lost on that one disk if parity is lost , hopefully i dont have a backplane explode on me , since i heard Norco 4224 are awful . I am still clueless what else i can do with unraid such as dockers and for my cache drives i can provide 2 ssds for cache 1tb ea. Does unraid set these up for raid? These SSDs will of course have to be plugged into my mobo. other than that not sure what dockers are good and where do i find a listing of them beside plex.
  12. already got them! I guess Unraid get use a maximum of 2 drives for parity? in case a drive fails? The only other thing i can think of is getting a good UPS now
  13. I ended up going with two Dell H310s got both for only 32.00 . so basically 16.00 ea will reflash myself. I just wanted an extra dont know why also got a intel RAID Storage Controller RES2SV240 / 27.00 Shipped! got me some reverse breakout cables for my Norco 4224 , Got one mini sas to mini sas cable for 5 bucks. Norco 4224 case cost me about 335.00 newegg. Will be running a Z270 , 7700k at 4.5 ghz "This SAN/PLEX server will not be running much else" 32GB DDR 4 24x 8TB WD REDS 1X 1TB SSD Cache PSU EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 220-G2-0850-XR 80+ GOLD 850W Fully Modular
  14. Found my HBA sas card Can someone tell me if this already flashed for use within Unraid? I am assuming it is since IT mode is flashed https://www.ebay.com/itm/LSI-SAS-9211-8i-8-port-6Gb-s-PCI-E-Controller-Card-Internal-H3-25250-02C-IT-Mode/323207454142?hash=item4b40aa5dbe:g:DXQAAOSwMD5a0TYA
  15. Just over did probably lol got me two expanders for 82 bucks lol couldnt resist since they go for 82 ea
  16. Ok great thanks jonnie, i guess i misunderstood the manual on page 19 , So just to be clear i can use the SFF 8087 break out cables on the SAS expander card going from SAS to 4 sata cable ?
  17. THanks for the quick response Can you do me a favor and look on page 19 of the intel sas expander card manual. I am trying to figure out if i can use the SFF8087 to SATA breakout cables to use on the Norco 4224 backplane , backplane has 24 sata ports.. I am interpreting the manual page 19 saying these cables cannot be used with the expander.. Also since i have 20 ports now on the expander can i use the free SAS port on the raid card to give me 4 more sata ports using the Breakout cables? https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/e93121003_res2sv240_hwug.pdf THANKS!
  18. Decided to go with 9211-8i sas expander https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAA0T6N15523&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleMKP-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleMKP-PC-_-pla-_-Hard+Drive+Controllers+%2F+RAID+Cards-_-9SIAA0T6N15523&gclid=CjwKCAjwsdfZBRAkEiwAh2z65m-dqd4E_ARCog6A_pRgFbNpdy3-VQbBOq7OZ9kvMWxRKIe9wbhqVxoCAmgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds would this give me 24 connections ?
  19. Question again I own three Media Sonic 8 bay JBOD USB 3.0 or ESATA enclosures , Trying to figure out if i could build a unraid server using these? Probably not the best idea I am shopping for a sumpermicro 24 bay used on ebay but i am dreading it to have to spend so much, wasnt sure if unraid would work reliably with usb 3.0 24 HHDs in jbod using 3 USB 3.0 ports
  20. Gotcha thanks for the video , i will study it and compare the prices unflashed and flashed already
