    Unraid Podcast!

    As a new unraid user that just crossed a year these are some of the things I would be interested with respect to weekly content.

    -build guide segment with old, new, up and coming parts to be released (similar to Patrick form STH, he does reviews of mini systems and usually points out which are great pfsense systems, and gives guidance for customization)

    -various trouble shooting solutions to common problems

    -Docker/Plug-in segment for the community developers to promote their hard work (possible set up guide, best practices, what to watch out for)

    -Unraid Team segment highlight current areas of focus, whats coming in near future or long term, what not coming, with staw polls for the community to vote, this would also help assist and Motivate the team and provide excellent real time feedback.

    Thanks in advance for the opportunity to voice me opinion Mr Spencer.

    Thanks Jon for sharing your time with the home gadget podcast, please continue to promote unraid on other channels aswell with more time allotted.
    Every time you do I learn something new from your discussions and have a better appreciation for what you guys do.
    This gives me greater confidence knowing that the software I have invested my time and money in is continously being worked on for a better user experience.
    Thanks again for answering my questions, especially the ecc one and special thanks to every community developer, squid, spaceinvader, CHBMB, etc. without you guys I wouldn't be apart of the unraid tide.
    Keep up the good work Unraid Team.
    PS: next time invite Tom, would love to get to know Mr Unraid himself.

    Good day everyone,

    Just want to say thanks to the unraid team, spaceinvaderone and everyone on the forums for all their work and love for this beautiful software that is UNRAID.

    I'm a noob Unraider. I recently built my first system. I enjoy the learning process and setting up cool dockers for eg media streaming and downloading, etc. However having become a dad recently my time is very limited now.

    My question is will the unraid team ever consider a subscription service with video tutorials (like spaceinvader, I appreciate his work and very grateful for it but sometimes feel I'd prefer to get guidance from the ppl that designed the os) or individuals authorized by unraid from the community to assist noob users in getting more advanced dockers or features set up quickly?

    Will there by any changes to the license tiers in the future?

    Will unriad team ever release an official app for ios and Android?. (There are options out there but I'm not really impressed by it, some features don't work as I would like them to)

    How important is ecc ram for unraid software compared to ZFS. Does it make a SIGNIFICANT difference the way the file systems are set up having ECC ram for unriad os. Or will I have relatively the same protection using normal hardware that doesn't support?

    Preclear plugin

    Cisellis,

    I was having the same issue where it hung at 99% at the zeroing phase and the second drive computed. I ended up stopping the process and when I click to start it back I clicked on the resume feature and after that it completed the zeroing and the post read! So just to be patient with it I guess and try doing one at a time in my opinion.

    Request for Guidance on GPU for NVDEC for plex.

    Good Day everyone,

     

    Just built my first unraid server. Having fun geekin out.

    Can someone please recommend a good GPU for NVDEC for plex?

    My budget is $200 i'm open to buying used from ebay (GTX1060), or new from amazon (GTX1650).

    Please let me know if these are good choices and if not what would you recommend?

    Preclear plugin

    Good Day everyone,

     

    I just built my first unraid system, trying to learn as much as i can, on forums, manual and youtube and especially this group when other post their problems.

    I am tryin to preclear two 10tb HDD that i schucked from amazon. However, one of the drives is stuck at 99% Zero. Can someone assist?

     

    I have two 10TB connected and a 860 1TB SSD attached. On the first HDD i started the preclear (JEK6GG5N) and two hrs after i started the preclear on the second disk (2YKB4R2D).

     

    The second disk (2YKB4R2D) finished zeroing and post read before the first disk with preclear report. The first disk (JEK6GG5N) is stuck at zeroing 99% @101mb/s. I looked at the log, and saw that there is no line for exit "code" like the line for the second disk eg "Jan 31 11:49:53 preclear_disk_2YKB4R2D_1202: Zeroing: dd exit code - 0"

     

    The last line i have for the first disk is "Jan 31 10:28:04 preclear_disk_JEK6GG5N_17552: Zeroing: dd - wrote 10000831348736 of 10000831348736."

    I tried pausing the pausing all sessions and resuming but nothing changed.

     

    What should i do?

    Unraid Mirrored BTRFS Cache with Samsung SSD?

    Hi Shane,
     
    I have been running Samsung SSD Drives for 4+ years as part of a cache pool and recently just added my fourth Samsung SSD to the pool without any issues. Prior to that I had used a single spinner for the cache drive. I also use a Samsung SSD Pro Drive through unassigned devices for my Plex transcodes and for VM's. Transcoding creates a lot of writes to a drive and can burn through a warranty & lifespan pretty quickly on the lower grade SSD models.
     
    Perhaps others have had issues with Samsung SSD's, but for myself I have not.
     
    I've had an Unraid server running for 8+/- years now and have always funneled everything through the cache drives before dumping onto the storage drives. As a result I feel I get a longer lifespan out of my drives because they don't have to spin up every time something is added ... a few of my old drives have 60,000+ hours and are still chugging along.
     
    I've been using the forum for years without posting to search and solve any dilemmas that I got myself in to, so this is the first time posting on the forum.
    I thought I would quickly give you a reply since I have a similar setup to what you are planning to do.

    Do you have any disk encryption on your array and cache? If so what format are they?

    Is your array xfs? And you cache btrfs?
    And are they both encrypted?

    UPS recommendation.

    Good day everyone,

     

    I am currently looking to purchase a UPS for potential unraid server, in my country I can get the BR1500G APC UPS from the "backup" line in apc, which supports AVR, however it is not a True SineWave model. The smart line from APC which is more expensive has the true sine wave but these are difficult to find. Please guide me, do i need a smart model or will the "back up" line BR1500G work just fine?     recommended Board for Ryzen 3600 ? pls Help

    Good day,

    Disclaimer, I'm also new to unraid so take what I tell you with a grain of salt, having recently done some research for a mother board myself for unraid id like to share what little I know.

    Seeing that your considering ryzen 3600, I'd go with a mother board that had onboard VGA, as unraid needs a primary gpu to boot, if you don't you'll end up using one of your precious pcie x16 slot for a lame gpu just to get it to boot, which is not cool.

    My recommendation is Asrock X470D4U. Also has IPMI for remote management, no extra license to purchase to get full access to your mobo, (unlike supermicro). Availability of these boards are an issue but they are in and out if stock quickly.

    Unraid Mirrored BTRFS Cache with Samsung SSD?

    Good day everyone,

     

    I am glad to be apart of the community. I am still building my system, awaiting parts. i was considering buying a second 1TB Samsung SSD to use as a mirrored cache in BTRFS for my server. I recall sometime back where was a thread i found on the forums with numerous people having performance issues with Samsung SSD and that configuration. My question is, has this been dealt with by the unraid team? what was the fix if there was a work around? should i go ahead and buy another 1tb SSD? Or just stick to the basics and use XFS and one ssd? 

     

    Also I tend to download alot of movies and videos (FTP), should the downloads be sent to the cache drive and have my VMs use an unassigned drive ssd, to reduce any performance issues? Please guide me. what the best configuration for cache at the moment? Thank you in advance to anyone who responds.

    PS I found a request like this online, I just modified what were my own requirements.

     

    I am currently in the process of choosing parts for my first Unraid build and was hoping to get some advice on the processor. I recently got a great deal on a used motherboard Supermicro X10srl-f

     

    **NAS Uses:**

     

    * **Primary purpose:** Backup for critical files, Media Server, Dockers, Plex Server (Up to 2 1080p/sometimes one 4k stream transcoding)(plan to buy a GTX1060 eventually), Home Security DVR for cameras 2-4 1080p, Personal Cloud music player (spotify alternative),)

    Media Finder/Downloader/Metadata/Organize (Sonarr, Radarr, Linarr, uTorrent, Sabnzbd, Plexply etc..),

     

    * **Secondary purpose:** Virtual Machines (Maybe 1 or 2 max at once - web browsing & email), Gaming (I would like the ability to run steam), Remote Access,

     

    **Front End Clients:**

     

    *Fire TV

    * Fire Stick

    * Nvidia Shield

    * HTPC

    * Tablets

     

    So I've narrowed my CPU choices down to the below: Requirements (High Base Frequency and moderate core count) please advise me if low frequency higher core count cpus are better suited.

     

    * **Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3 @ 3.50GHz** Core: 6 12T- (Passmark: 13631) - price is decent for used processors, will this be able to handle everything I listed above? If not what will I not be able to do or be able to do lol?

     

    **Intel Xeon E5-2667 v3 @3.2ghz**

    Core:8 - (Passmark:16011), a bit pricy when compared to ryzen offerings. If I can keep it close to the pricing of e5-1650v3 it would be preferred.

     

    * **Intel Xeon E5-1620 v3 @ 3.50GHz** Core: 4 - (Passmark: 9747) - price is very affordable! I plan to run with this for the while for basic Nas and plex duties, 2 DVR home security cameras and wait for prices of more powerful processors to fall and upgrade later on to do more advanced stuff listed above (though I'd rather have the ability to do it now!)

     

    Do you guys think I can get away with the 1650? Or should I consider the lower clocked processors with more core like the e5-2640v3 (8 core 16T) 13864 passmark @2.6Ghz, or e5-2680v3 (12core,24T) 18000 passmark @2.5Ghz? Will the lower frequency put me at a disadvantage for gaming, vms, plex and DVR home security cameras and everything else? Thank you in advance to anyone who responds to my request.

    SSD Array for unraid?

    I have a couple used ssd’s, out of curiosity, can I build an array with parity with it?, don’t have an unraid system built yet, still learning as much as I could about it, don’t need any mass storage, just fast access to files. What are the pros and cons aside from the cost (obviously). Do mechanical drives last longer with parity? Or ssd are still superior in this case?

    Greetings all,

     

    Thanks in advance for any and all guidance. I am new to unraid, i'm just a tinker-er that fell in love with the unraid.

     

    My proposed build from old parts:

    Processor: AMD FX8350

    Motherboard: M5A97 R2.0

    Crucial 16gig (2x8gig) Unbuffered ECC

     

    My problem is that my motherboard does not have on board video, can i simply install a GPU and install unraid that way? is it that easy? or is there a can of worms waiting to happen that i am not aware of, please guide me. PS i don't have an old gpu so i'll have to  buy a cheap one hence why i'm asking.
