  1. Sorry if this seams like a double post from the lounge area but I do need help with this and figured I might try this section as well. I already have a good UNRAID server that I want to make just our NAS. I have been looking at either building a Threadripper 1900x system or using something like a used R710, R720, R730 to handle all I want to get out of the new server. I know its a tall order to fill but need some help trying to figure out what the best hardware I need is. So far this is my plan: Run a btrfs cache pool with 4x 2tb ssd's (4tb usable for high speed data access) a 1tb nvme ssd for my dockers and vms and a small storage for non-highspeed storage (2x 8tb drives one in parity and one for the data). All data on new server backed up to existing server via Rclone that way if the new one goes I have additional backups. I also have a 1050ti or Rx580 I can use for the vms. I am looking at either 32gb or 64gb for ram. I have all of the drives for the new system just don't know what way to go? I am looking at hardware for the following tasks: 1) Plex server (docker) for 2 -5 in home clients and for 5 out of home clients. 2) Handbrake (docker) for converting my video files to usable files for Davinci resolve, 3) a Linux vm for a small Ark game server for both me and my brother in-law. Team Red or Team Blue? I figured I should ask the community to see what my options are since each side has its own challenges. I need help deciding on what path I should take for the motherboard and chip(s)?
  2. I have been loving UnRaid for my existing server. I have been running Plex and Handbrake dockers but want to move into more VM stuff as well. Now its time to start planning the next Server. Current plan is to take existing Server and make it a storage only server since its only got: supermicro - x11ssh-f Intel xeon E3- 1230 v5 @3.4GHz, 16gb ecc memory (1x dim), 4x 8Tb seagate 7200rpm nas drives (1x is the parity drive), 1x 500Gb crucial ssd cache drive. 10gb mellanox connect-x2 nic all in a Rosewell case with 12 hot-swap bays I have a fiber connection now so bandwidth for what I am asking wont be a problem. I am looking at hardware for the following tasks: 1) Plex server (docker) for 2 maybe 3 in home clients and for 5 out of home clients. 2) Handbrake (docker) for converting my video files to usable files for Davinci resolve, 3) a Linux vm for a small Ark game server for both me and my brother in-law. 3. at&t wireless tech support is like talking to a chain auto parts counter guy no matter what level you get. I use only Samsung phones so tethering shouldn't be an issue. I would rather not have to buy anything else to make this work.
  4. i do have a wireless router available but no broadband at current place to hook it up to. Should I to keep the server acting nice add the router into the mix when the phone is not connected?
  5. To help clarify my computer/ networking experience level here goes. I am new to unraid, not to networking in general. I have built all of my computer systems since the late 1990's. I have deployed many systems for family, friends and some small businesses. most networks I have deployed though have been peer- peer networks. just now it started working right. I am just not sure of why.
  6. When I boot from off the mb sees a good dhcp address. That's what has me confused
  7. I do the windows connection sharing. That's how unraid first worked now it doesn't connect and gives some crazy up address. It's like 169.254.something
  8. Okay here is my network. Switch - printer Switch - win 10 desktop ( tethering pc) Switch - unraid box Switch - bluray player ( to show movies on tv that are stored on pc/ server. And the switch can connect when needed to an access point for wifi use by our wifi devices.
  9. My problem is I live in a rural area and have to connect to the internet through tethering to my cell phone. The internet providers feel it's not profitable to service my road with full internet land lines. How would I set my unraid box to see internet before my computer that is my primary tethered device.
  10. Okay bought pro license fixed that issue. Now it won't connect to the internet and I can only get on the server through the numeric address.
  11. I got a lexar usb 2.0 16gb flash drive and loaded the initial boot files. I also got a new trial licence for the new drive. so all looks good so far. I will update once The parity rechecks and the system stays stable for over 12hrs.
  12. Could I just reformat the flash drive and reload it with the unraid software as well as reset the mb to factory settings help with my problems. Or could I just have a bad flash drive causing all my problems? And since I am only on a trial key it couldn't hurt to go grab a few more unraid safe usb drives? On a side note could the fact that the flashdrive is a usb 3.0 model have anything to do with my problem?
  13. latest diagnostic file. still no connection to web when nothing has changed on the network since Friday, tower-diagnostics-20180325-2025.zip
  14. Will put new diagnostics up later tonight when I get home.
  15. Well I did the basic mistake of using usb 3 ports cause the mb didn't seperate the 2 and 3's by color. So fixed that now it still won't log the trial key as active.
  16. I have no /boot/ and no /boot/config/ directories. I have tried many usb locations on the server. the keyboard does not have a usb pass through on it. I have no hubs installed either just usb on the mb. I have the trial licence if that makes any difference.
  17. Here is the diagnostic file From my system. Can y'all help explain what I am looking for in it so I can understand them and see what the problem is also? tower-diagnostics-20180325-1411.zip
  18. Will do once I get home this afternoon. Thanks for the information.
  19. Yes I have an iP address. Not sure how to get the other information y'all need. It does see the cable and my switch sees it with same ip as it shows on the computer. My board has dual Ethernet and an impi location. Yes the cable is plugged into the right Ethernet jack. I have built all my own computers since early 2000s and this is my first enterprise based system I have built.
  20. Hi all, When I loaded unraid yesterday(Friday) it worked fine. Then once I let it check parity on the system for the first time and then shut it down through the web gui so i can move it to my rack from where i had assembled the server after the parity check had finished. It now is giving me a hard time. not wanting to be accessible from any computer in the house. no web gui, no access through the on server gui. It was a clean install on recommended flashdrive (sandisk cruzer fit) (fat32 formated). my server specs are supermicro mb x11ssh-f crucial 16gb ecc ram single stick (mb manufacturer recommended) (4x) 8tb seagate ironwolf hdd for storage 250gb wd blue sata ssd I am pulling my hair out not that I have much trying to figure out why I cant get the server back up and running. internet connectivity is available through my desktop computer when I link it to my 4glte Samsung s7 cell phone.
