  1. Thanks for trying to figure this out! Looks like it going to be a bit before we 9900k owners get hardware video decoce/encode support.
  2. @GreySyntax good luck in your quest! I'm hoping to make use of the iGPU with my 9900k on Unraid as well so I wish you the best! It would be awesome to leverage hardware decoding in Plex. I wish I had the know how to participate in your endeavors.
  3. I don't know enough to dive into the details but I made my first Windows 10 VM the other day passing through an EVGA GTX980 Ti and experienced similar issues. Moving the mouse around the desktop would peg the GPU usage at 100%. I am running Unraid 6.6.7 and my problems disappeared after I removed the "Graphics ROM BIOS" from my config, updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers and rebooted the VM a couple of times. Now things seem to be working as expected. You may have already done those things but I thought I'd share in case you hadn't.
  4. @matryska Thanks for putting this guide together! I am excited to give this a go. One question, is there any way to limit how much space the time machine backup will take on the share with this method? Or will Time Machine just use all of the available space on the drive until it is full? Thanks for your time and help!
  5. @limetech Any update on the possibility of the inclusion of the 4.20 or newer Linux kernel?
  6. Good news! It has finally booted after 3 days of beating my head against the wall. I remembered that I have another server on hand that uses the same type of memory, DDR4 2133 ECC, so I borrowed a stick and the damn thing booted up. So I went back and tried the two sticks individually and both caused the same error with UNRAID hanging while loading. This is really confusing considering that the original memory ran for 12+ hours via Memtest with no issues. To make sure that there isn't a problem with the motherboard running in dual channel memory mode I borrowed another memory stick and it still worked. So seems pretty conclusive that I've got bad memory or that the memory I had is incompatible for some reason (I will have to go check the list on supermicro's website as I thought when this equipment was originally purchased that it was on the list) For posterity, removing all other USB devices didn't fix this issue for me. I also tried disabling all of the other USB controllers as well as changing other various BIOS settings related to USB and nothing resolved this issue. In the end the memory is either bad or incompatiable. Shout out to Benson for joining in the fray with me! Thanks!
  7. Hey Benson, Thanks for chiming in. Safe Mode doesn't make a difference. Unraid never fully loads so the array never even has a chance to start. I have tried a 6.5.3 and 6.6.6 and both hang on the same spot listed in the attached screenshot. Bahndit
  8. BIOS has been updated and the problem persists. Still can't get past the screen that I attached in the original post. Does anyone have any thoughts? Does anyone know if the text on the attached picture point to anything in particular that I should try? I am at a loss of what to do next over here. I've helped people put together 10+ UNRAID systems over the last nine years and I have never run into a problem like this one.
  9. Just realized there is a BIOS update. I will report back if it helps. I would still love any input anyone might have to offer. Thanks,
  10. I just finished putting together a new build using a Xeon E5-1620 v4 with a SuperMicro C7X99-OCE-F Motherboard. The unit posts just fine and I am able to start the process of loading UNRAID but eventually the server just hangs at the following screen. I have done the following: Ran Memtest overnight and it came up clean. tried all of the USB ports on the motherboard with no change tried both Legacy and UEFI boot methods. re-installed UNRAID on the USB Stick several times using both MacOS and Windows Installers. I also tried an old school manual install. verified that the USB stick had a good install by using it to boot another server temporarily. I removed all PCIE Cards from the motherboard. No Change I am not sure where to go from here. Any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and help! -Bahndit
  11. Thanks for the input Hoopster. I've looked at the Supermicro options, like the X11SCA-F , but I have not looked at ASRock yet. Thanks again for the input. It is very appreciated!
  12. Well, I had some more time and so I did some more digging using the search on the forum. On the ECC front: Looks like most would recommend ECC Memory but if one does enough testing of their memory then they can avoid at least the potential pitfall of bad memory. You still leave yourself open to a bad bit at some point so one needs to make a personal decision on that point. On CPU front: besides the lack of support for ECC memory with the i9-9900k the other potential issue, at least for the near future, is that the iGPU on the 9900k will not be supported until UNRAID upgrades to the 4.20 Linux kernel. UNRAID 6.7.0 will likely come relatively soon but at least one post by the developers suggests that 6.7.0 will not have the 4.20 Linux kernel. Kind of a bummer but it will happen someday I imagine. Based on those findings, I am leaning more towards the i9-9900k. With that in mind does anyone have any thoughts on a different motherboard or should I stay with the Gigabyte C246-WU4?
  13. I am planning an upgrade to my existing system in order to get hardware decode for UHD files in Plex (I am aware of the HDR limitations at this time but I am okay with the transcodes maintaining HDR). I am also hoping to get a more efficient machine in the form of heat that the server outputs. I am planning on using the Gigabyte C246-WU4 for the motherboard. I am a little sad about losing IPMI compared to the SuperMicro boards I have used in the past but the additional PCI-E Slots are worth it to me. That leads to the real question that I would love for some other forum members to weigh in on. I can't decide which processor to use between the Intel i9-9900k or the Intel Xeon E-2186G. Just so people know I am coming from an Intel Xeon CPU E5-1650 v3 on a Supermicro - X10SRA-F motherboard. I realize I am drastically reducing the number of PCI-E Lanes available but my grand plans of multiple VMs never really came to fruition once Docker hit its stride. This machine is still working great except that a UHD file re-encode via Plex maxes out the CPU. It also produces plenty of heat when I've got a couple of Plex streams going. A friend offered to buy it so I find myself planning an upgrade. My initial plan was to use the Intel Xeon E-2186G for the ECC memory support but the additional 2 cores on the i9-9900k are very tempting for possible future gaming VM or a possible WinVM for Dynamic HDR to SDR conversion for my projector . The cost difference between the two is not really an issue. I think it really boils down to two questions for me: Are there any other chip differences I should consider besides the core count or does it mostly just come down to ECC Memory or non-ECC Memory? What are people's thoughts about running non-ECC memory? All opinions/thoughts are welcome and very much appreciated!
  14. This solved the problem I had where UNRAID was stuck on "Starting Services"
  15. Well crap. I guess I need to improve my searching skills. Just found this thread for a homebridge docker. I will move my discussion there. I hate it when I start unneeded threads. Sorry folks!
  16. I found some people have created dockers here and here. One of them doesn't look like it has been touched in a while but the first has seen some activity in the last couple of months. If someone with docker experience could look at these two dockers I would love to know if either would be a good starting point. Thanks!
  17. Could someone create or give me advice about creating a docker container that can run this Homebridge Software? Homebridge is a lightweight NodeJS server that emulates the iOS HomeKit API. It supports Plugins, which are community-contributed modules that provide a basic bridge from HomeKit to various 3rd-party APIs provided by manufacturers of "smart home" devices. I also would also like to be able to install this plugin for Homebridge that will allow the Homebridge Server to talk to a Control4 Home Automation system. I have never built any docker images but I might be able to figure it out but I would love some advice about which base and other packages would be needed to make this work. It would be a tremendous help if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks!!!
  18. Happy to share. Things are working much better now that I have fixed my mistake. However, as you can see below I am still getting TERRIBLE 4k performance so I still need to tune this some more. Anyone have any thoughts? I am using the latest VirtIO Drivers 1.112 as I couldn't get Win10 to install with the stable drivers. Should I roll back to an earlier driver release or will that mess up my VM?
  19. Well after looking at things with fresh eyes this morning I think I solved the issue. Somehow my 'domains' share ended up on my array and not my cache pool. So..... yeah.... feeling a bit daft this morning. I will report back on performance not that I have pulled my head out.
  20. I forgot to mention that I have done all of the tuning recommended on the wiki as well. There was a minor improvement but not much. I am really at loss of why my write speeds are so terrible. Anyone have any input?
  21. I have done my best to read around on the forums and google a solution but I can't seem to find a solution on my own. My write speeds inside my Win10 VM are terrible: I gave up on finishing this benchmark. Write speeds seem to be reasonable inside UNRAID. dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/cache/test.dd count=8192000 bs=64k count=8k conv=fdatasync 8192+0 records in 8192+0 records out 536870912 bytes (537 MB) copied, 1.27176 s, 422 MB/s Here is my XML code: <domain type='kvm'> <name>Bahndit-VM</name> <uuid>f79e8176-a002-ff34-c2f4-da5810074bfe</uuid> <description>Gaming PC</description> <metadata> <vmtemplate name="Custom" icon="windows.png" os="windows"/> </metadata> <memory unit='KiB'>17301504</memory> <currentMemory unit='KiB'>17301504</currentMemory> <memoryBacking> <nosharepages/> <locked/> </memoryBacking> <vcpu placement='static'>1</vcpu> <cputune> <vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='0'/> </cputune> <os> <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-i440fx-2.3'>hvm</type> <loader type='pflash'>/usr/share/qemu/ovmf-x64/OVMF-pure-efi.fd</loader> </os> <features> <acpi/> <apic/> </features> <cpu mode='host-passthrough'> <topology sockets='1' cores='1' threads='1'/> </cpu> <clock offset='localtime'> <timer name='rtc' tickpolicy='catchup'/> <timer name='pit' tickpolicy='delay'/> <timer name='hpet' present='no'/> </clock> <on_poweroff>destroy</on_poweroff> <on_reboot>restart</on_reboot> <on_crash>restart</on_crash> <devices> <emulator>/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64</emulator> <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw' cache='writeback'/> <source file='/mnt/user/domains/Bahndit-VM/vdisk1.img'/> <target dev='hdc' bus='virtio'/> <boot order='1'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x04' function='0x0'/> </disk> <disk type='file' device='cdrom'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <source file='/mnt/user/domains/ISOs/Windows10.iso'/> <target dev='hda' bus='ide'/> <readonly/> <boot order='2'/> <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' target='0' unit='0'/> </disk> <disk type='file' device='cdrom'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <source file='/mnt/user/domains/VirtIO Drivers/virtio-win-0.1.112.iso'/> <target dev='hdb' bus='ide'/> <readonly/> <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' target='0' unit='1'/> </disk> <controller type='usb' index='0'> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x01' function='0x2'/> </controller> <controller type='pci' index='0' model='pci-root'/> <controller type='ide' index='0'> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x01' function='0x1'/> </controller> <controller type='virtio-serial' index='0'> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </controller> <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:99:16:5d'/> <source bridge='br0'/> <model type='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x02' function='0x0'/> </interface> <serial type='pty'> <target port='0'/> </serial> <console type='pty'> <target type='serial' port='0'/> </console> <channel type='unix'> <source mode='bind' path='/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/channel/target/Bahndit-VM.org.qemu.guest_agent.0'/> <target type='virtio' name='org.qemu.guest_agent.0'/> <address type='virtio-serial' controller='0' bus='0' port='1'/> </channel> <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <driver name='vfio'/> <source> <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/> </source> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x05' function='0x0'/> </hostdev> <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <driver name='vfio'/> <source> <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/> </source> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x06' function='0x0'/> </hostdev> <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' managed='yes'> <source> <vendor id='0x046d'/> <product id='0xc52b'/> </source> </hostdev> <memballoon model='virtio'> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x07' function='0x0'/> </memballoon> </devices> </domain> I have tried changing the cache to 'none' and adding io='native' but then my VM won't boot up. I have all of this beautiful new gear that I am dying to play some games with. Thanks in advance for your time and help!
  22. OopsAllBerrys, What kind of hardware are you using? On my machines I have both refresh rate match and HD Audio passthrough working. I have also not experienced a loss of settings upon reboot. Gulo, I will have to give your VM image a go. I would love to use 9P filesystem.
