  1. I remember the wd green drives had a problem with load cycle count. Is this no longer a problem? I'm seriously very concerned about this. Can someone please give me a more detailed answer? thanks!
  2. here is a screenshot and my last smart report. Smart_Rpt_52LO.txt
  3. Hi everyone, I am experiencing what I think might be a problem with my Seagate 3 TB drives. My server config is in my sig and I have attached a syslog and copies of the smart reports for the 4 3 TB Seagates in my array. Each of these drives is showing either high fly writes or high load cycle counts or both. The 2 TB drives show neither of these errors. I just bought 3 more 3 TB Seagates and am preclearing them in a brand new 3 TB array running Unraid 5.0. The preclear is not finished and already one drive has a high fly writes count of 1. This occurred with one of the above drives. No sectors have been reallocated on any of these drives, none are pending, and none have seen high temperatures. Is this an issue? What should I do? thanks for your help. syslog-2013-12-06.txt Smart_Rpt_0D23.txt Smart_Rpt_AZ66.txt Smart_Rpt_KH58.txt
  4. Do we have to worry about the load cycle count on this drive? I have only seagates and remember some issue with this, something to do with power cycling? thanks!
  5. I posted earlier that all is well with my server, but I think now I am seeing some problems with the reatek nic. I have seen this only intermittently in the past but now am seeing it on nearly every copy. Copying files from a Win7 x64 box to my server, there is a delay from at least 15 sec up to 2 min or more, when the dialog box says "calculating" and nothing happens. During this period, samba is unresponsive - whether I click on the target directory or attempt to otherwise navigate the directory structure using my Win7 box, nothing happens. I see a similar thing with the web gui - there is a delay of 10s of seconds at times to reload a page - often though the delay is only 1 or two seconds. What do you think - is this likely the realtek nic or is it perhaps an artifact of the new webgui?
  6. I have finally had the chance to upgrade to Unraid 5.0 today. I backed up my Flash Drive, reformatted it, copied the 5.0 package to as well as my config directory, ran Make_bootable, and restarted. I then installed the web gui and unmenu. My cache_dirs seems to have been already installed, so I left that alone. All seems to be working well. The new interface is excellent. thanks, Tom.
  7. I hate this too, and that **** sig "sent by tapatalk" .... I've hated that sort of thing since the original blackberry - which defines ****: "please pardon the brevity of this message - it was sent from my blackberry" Such arrogant viral advertising... us GenX-ers dont like advertising. =) OH, AND not to mention, every time I open this farking forum on my ipad, I get an AD for tapatalk! I hate! that and it cant be turned off. For this reason ALONE I will never ever purchase tapatalk. I guess I plan on ditching the ipad eventually anyway, but man i HATE this!!! whew, too much coffee this morning! Agreed - I LOATHE Tapatalk. Thanks for the instructions on screen, will do it after posting this. Anyway - I upgraded from 4.7 to 5.0 final last night. I had done a parity check before and after the upgrade. It is an 8.5 TB array. Parity time IMPROVED by 3 mins and 21 sec with V5 final. No errors found in either. I install my AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 card later today...
  8. Anyone have an answer here? We have conflicting DO NOTs here - I'm inclined to listen to Tom. This is from the first page in the thread - can you clarify please?: If you are currently running unRAID Server OS release 5.0-rc16c: ---------------------------------------------------------------- - Copy over 'bzimage', 'bzroot', and 'readme.txt' from the release zip file to your Flash and then reboot your server. If you are currently running an earlier unRAID Server OS 5.0-beta or 5.0-rc release: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - Probably the best thing to do is backup your Flash, reformat, re-install, restore 'config' directory, and then reboot. So i back up my flash format clean install Then what? I copy the old config directory over? or can i just leave it with a clean install? (want to install all addons from start again anyway) Should i move my plugins from /boot/plugins to /boot/config/plugins? You SHOULD NOT reformat or start over unless you really want to re-install everything.

  10. Pardon me, but if you will hold people to this then you must hold people to staying on topic. Noone wants to read the RC thread if there are a lot of posts that have nothing to do with the RC. That is the case here. it is getting old. Noone should have to read through this extraneous stuff in order to get the critical information. As a general rule of thumb if you decided to join a testing cycle you should keep up to date with latest unless there is a specific reason you cannot. This is not an unRAID thing but a general tester thing.
  11. Tom, I updated my server to -12a and rebooted. It is working fine now. I have r8168. thank you! Upgraded to rc12a and now all is working again - thank you
  12. I get these in my syslog every time I reboot. I will check the linked thread and see what i can do about it.
  13. I don't even know what simplefeatures is. I for one do wish you guys would take it to another thread. I'm glad Tom is tolerant, but you guys posting in this thread seems like just looking for attention when you could be posting perfectly on topic on a different thread. I understand, some people need attention, but simplefeatures is completely irrelevant to users like me. I would get upset if it got in the way of development of unraid, that's for sure. I believe it would be better if you worked with the developer of simplefeatures whom you paid to work these things out - yes? I dont understand why you people are so upset about me posting about plugins. The fact that a plugin can negatively influence unraid's functioning is a big deal and should be mentioned in this thread. Maybe there is a way to create some sort of 'protected' plugin structure so a plugin lives in its own space/vm and can never alter the workings of unraid. If something like that is even possible under linux or unraid, i dont know.
  14. I could not get into my server through the web interface using this rc (using the 8168 NIC). I have reverted back to rc10.
  15. I bought this case when this deal came out. Forgot to send in the rebate - I hate rebates. Anyway it is a very good deal. The fans are a bit on the loud side however. If you arent frequently swapping out drives (which is a bit fiddly . . . ) then it is a great case. it's a very good deal no matter how you look at it. Highly recommended for the budget conscious.
  16. This is a good price; using a value of 3815 GB for this drive and 2861 GB for a 3 tb drive, here are the prices at which the two are equivalent on a storage basis: 3 tb $120 $41.9 per tb 4 tb $159 $41.7 per tb Looking forward to breaking below the $40/tb barrier in a 4 tb drive! the $90 deal for 3 tb last holiday season offered an amazing $31.5/tb value....
  17. Any news on this topic? I am interested in some smaller drives... thanks!
  18. Im sure you dont want to read this, but I dont think you will sell those drives at those prices - its so small a discount it isnt worth the risk to the potential buyer. May I suggest: 1) offer them as precleared drives - preclear them and offer that service as a value add - they are probably just sitting on your shelf anyway. 2) The drives are much more valuable if they are still under warranty than if they are not. You should point this out and price accordingly. 3) If you want top dollar you should consider putting up smart reports - even if the person has no idea what he's looking at he will be more likely to pay up knowing that there are no problems with the drives. JMO. Good luck!
  19. Joe, thanks for your help. I am not complaining and I am sensitive to the amount of flak you get from folks (some of us need to read Dale Carnegie's book IMO). The problem is that my ignorance gets in the way of implementing things outside of unmenu =). I was confused, as you say, by the plugin thread, and I have learned to stick with the basic unmenu plugins. Some of the behavior I've seen makes sense now that you've pointed out to me the single threaded nature of the process. I'll continue to be conservative with it. I should be able now to implement cache_dirs on my server. Thanks again.
  20. Joe, Actually I was not referring to Unmenu - I have used that for a long time. I was referring to cache_dirs. This thread talks about an unmenu plugin: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=19790.msg195098#msg195098 this is where I was trying to making a new directory. WRT the multiple posts on installation, the cache_dirs wiki in your OP in this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4500.msg40570#msg40570 refers to this wiki, http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Improving_unRAID_Performance#Keep_directory_entries_cached I will give mkdir a shot and follow the instructions in the first thread I linked. Edit: that wiki seems to have been modified today - there were a few threads referenced on customizing cache_dirs after the two bullet points, now they are not there. the OP in this thread discusses a lot about how cache_dirs works but not how to actually install it. I can't find cache_dirs in the unmenu package manager; thus my confusion. Thank you. It is the command for MS-DOS, but not for linux/unix. The command for unMENU would be mkdir /boot/unmenu Apparently, you did not look here: http://code.google.com/p/unraid-unmenu/ or here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5568.0 Both give the "mkdir" command. Which "wiki" page are you referring to. Since the wiki can be edited by anyone, it is impossible for me to know where you looked. It probably was not this one http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/UnRAID_Add_Ons#UnMENU Joe L.
  21. I apologize for asking a stupid question, but I cannot figure out how to install cache_dirs. I have been searching for hours. I was interested in the unmenu plugin, but I see I dont know how to create a directory - I thought "md" was the command. I take this as a sign that I am an idiot and i need to ask for help to do this. Could someone point me directly to install instructions? The wiki page refers to 5 separate threads. It is very confusing. thanks!
  22. Well I am having trouble copying to my array now. Windows gives the error "there is a problem accessing \\server\directory.... After my problems last night, I allowed the preclear to complete, rebooted the server, and brought the array online. Opening a server folder is quite slow - it hesitates for 30 to 60 sec, then displays the directory. Attempting to copy a file, though, does not work. Windows cannot connect to the share. I ran the permissions script, I might just run it again.
  23. OK Here is something I have not seen before. I am running rc10, and preclearing a 5700 rpm 3 tb drive. I was trying to copy three 1 gb files to my array, and the share was unresponsive in windows (7). I cancelled the copy and reinitiated. Eventually I was able to copy to the array. Until then the copy dialog box remained open while it calculated time remaining. From the two failed copy attempts there were a few mb of data written to my drive. After copying those files successfully I tried again, with the same poor results. Then I looked at my syslog (enclosed). Looks like I am running out of memory, but looking at memory info from the system info page: (from /usr/bin/free) total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 4132764 1410912 2721852 0 489932 513456 -/+ buffers/cache: 407524 3725240 Swap: 0 0 0 It looks like I have plenty. 24. I have only 2 tb and 3 tb drives, connected either to the m/b sata ports or to my SASLP Card.
  25. Thanks for that, Alex, I had not thought about it that way. It makes sense.
