  1. Anyone know of any low power mITX MBs with six SATA and a PCI slot? I can find ones with a PCIe slot but not standard PCI.

    USB NIC?

So that's a confirmed no, even for a kludged hack, to get a USB NIC to work with unraid?
  3. Thank you kind sir! I appreciate it very much.
  4. Strange request, but can anyone give me the dimensions of an M1015? Specifically the height including the PCI connector and the height with the cables plugged into the top... Need to see how much wiggle room I have in a small case build. Thanks,
  5. Kinda off topic but at the same time kinda not... I need a linux desktop distro, something that looks like unraid. That is to say, I don't want to load BSD because paths and commands will be subtly different, and I'd like to stay "in practice" and be able to edit the same files, in the same paths, etc., as unraid. So if unraid is based on, say, Redhat, then I'll look for a desktop distro in that family. In fact, I know I've read somewhere what linux distro unraid is based on, but I can't remember. So... what linux distro lies underneath unraid?

    USB NIC?

Its got a PCIe-X16 slot I was planning on using with an M1015 (only two SATA on board)
  7. Rosewill, Athena, Hercules, Diablotek, Coolmax, KDM Power... All names I'm not really familiar with. I have a Hercules in a system now, and it weighs about as much as a pack of smokes, even though it claims a 600w rating. And the wires are super thin. I need a MicroATX power supply (or something 2.5" tall) and I'm running out of options. Need something in the 300w range from a reputable company. I can't find much on Newegg or Ebay that I recognize. Any experience with the aforementioned brands? I am contemplating simply using an ATX PS and removing the power supply board itself from the metal box, but I'm afraid it won't fit, and worse, I'm afraid an unshielded PS will induce RF noise into the system. This is for a 10-drive server I am building in a VERY SMALL case. I'll post more details later if I'm successful, it should be a fun build. Any comments?

    USB NIC?

I know its not ideal, but my test server includes a 10/100 ethernet port on the motherboard, and only one PCIe-X1 slot, which I am hoping to use with a SATA controller. Any chance a USB NIC will work with unraid? I know i won't get gig speeds (USB 2.0) but if I can get a little better than 100base-T speeds from a $12 adapter, I'm golden. And while I'm at it, rather than start a new thread in the hard disk forum... Will the favorite SuperMicro or IBM M1015 cards work in a PCIe-X1 slot? Again I know I'll be limiting speeds, but this is for a second unraid server to act as a backup of the primary's most critical files, and performance isn't super high on the list.
  9. OK... Some testing. I have three disks on the onboard SATA controller, and four disks on the PCI Promise four-port controller. I can stream two blurays at the same time via the same disk on the Promise, or via two disks on the Promise. If I add a third bluray, I get stuttering (didn't try streaming from the onboard). So assuming I don't have more than two clients streaming at the same time, or maybe a third client streaming a dvd instead, I should be OK. As for parity checks, the parity drive is on the onboard SATA. I'm just looking for a cheap(er) way to add more member disks. Still, the eight-port models are $80 or so on Ebay, while the M1015 is just a bit more. The AOC-SASLP-MV8 is on newegg for $109, but I read this review which gives me concern: -- Pros: This is a very inexpensive 8-port SATA card with (mostly working) Linux. I've run them for years in Linux file servers using patches from LKLM, but no stock kernel driver works under load. I've emailed the Marvell driver engineer and begged him to get the patches into shape for merging with upstream, but this hasn't happened during the past 2-3 years, and I'm swtiching to LSI. Cons: Linux drivers *appear* to work, but under load they can *time out*. This can introduce *silent* data corruption (e.g., one bit error in a 1GB file -- enough to change the md5 hash, but not enough to be noticed by many applications). Other Thoughts: I really had a lot of hope for this card under Linux, but have finally given up. The low-end LSI card is more than twice the cost, but it performs substantially better without annoying timeouts (or, with an unpatched kernel, data loss). -- Can anyone speak to this? I'd but the Supermicro today just for the speed and newness if the above review is not entirely correct.
  10. The older Promise Tech Fast Track 4 and 8 port PCI SATA-II controllers can be had on ebay for a song, and I have a four port model in an older machine I used to test unraid before I rolled it out, so I know they work. I'd like an M1015, but its not going to happen at the moment. So my question is, how much is the PCI bus going to limit my speeds? I don't need blistering speeds, but let's pitch two scenarios: - Fast Track has four drives attached, and two or three clients try to stream BluRay rips from the same drive on that controller. Do able or not? - Fast Track has four drive attached, and two or three clients try to stream BluRay rips from two or three rives on that controller. Do able or not? I'm just trying to think of a worst-case scenario, to see if the controller can handle it. Thanks.
  11. I don't know where to put this... its not exactly related to unraid (yet) but I need some help with ESXi, I can't get their forums to work, and I trust the user base here because I know some folks use ESXi. So apologies in advance if this is totally off topic (I will be using unraid to store data on the ESXi VMs via NFS eventually, so maybe I'm a little on topic after all...) First and foremost, I just learned that the onboard (software) RAID on my Intel MB isn't supported. It has been suggested on another forum that the M1015 card will work. So my first question is, do I need a specific firmware, like is required for unraid, or will any old Ebay card work? My second question is, will it be totally transparent to ESXi? I'm looking for my three 80GB disks to present as a single 147GB volume via RAID5, and then configure VMs from there... Am I doing OK so far or am I already screwed up? Any other cheap RAID card (low profile) that are known to work? This is for a test system initially so I don't want to break the bank. Thanks to all.
  12. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. download gcc etc and then download and compile idle3, you can do this right from unraid. i've done it on three disks with no issues.
  14. I have read numerous threads regarding this card, but forgive me as I still have questions. I am looking to add a card to support an additional 5-drive cage, and my only concerns are that a> it works and b> its as simple as possible. I've read threads regarding flashing firmware onto this card, and how it doesn't work on all motherboards. Certain ebay sellers are selling this board with the option of flashing various firmwares before it ships. I'm looking for best practice here. I don't want to take the chance that I have to find a MB in my box of parts that will actually work with flashing this board... Has anyone used an ebay seller that has offered them pre-flashed? What version did you go with? Thanks.
  15. I think I remember a hosts.deny file that can be placed on linux systems to reject network requests from hosts. I have an interesting issue that is not exactly related to unraid. I have just upgraded my phone (droid) and one of the first things it did during its programming is tell me that it found a media server -- my unraid system!!! I am 100% paranoid about my phone (and google, and therefore anyone else) knowing everything about me based on my phone (the whole gps/contact list/etc thing where companies just take information from you and data mine it). I do not use facecrook or any other related sites, and lock down my phone as best I can, but still... I DO NOT want my phone accessing or knowing about my unraid server, and I don't want google poking around with any data that my phone may forward. Can I specifically tell unraid that, when my phone uses wifi in the house, it is to ignore my phone (and all the other phones in the house, for that matter) by MAC address? Thanks. ETA: Actually, now that i think of it, can I use a combination of hosts.deny and hosts to reject ALL traffic from ALL hosts, except those that I specify (trusted clients, HTPCs, etc)?
  16. I appreciate it... I wish I could get everything to work, I really do, I just can't dedicate every afternoon and evening to trying to fix the next broken thing. I've already poured more hours into this project than I had planned. At this point I just need a system that will just work. Hopefully a second system doing the downloading will be that solution.
  17. I am though with my efforts to try to get Sab/SB/CP to run alongside unraid, and will be putting them on a small dedicated machine to act as my downloader. I can't get any of the aforementioned processes to run on unraid now, but I do need to get the current queued files off, my server configs, my usenet configs, etc. What's the best way to recover all of my settings for use on the next system? Thanks.
  18. Well, as far as running sab/sb/cp on the unraid server, I'm over it. Just can't get the system to stay stable with all the other crap running. Time to dedicate an old PC to be my downloader. Not about to risk the stability and availability of my data for the convenience of running one less machine. Hopefully unraid + simple features doesn't puke all over itself. This initial install has been a pretty rocky road. Next step will be to let the system run for a few days to make sure the web interface doesn't die any more... if it does, I'm afraid I'll be about at my wit's end.
  19. Thanks Joe. I read another thread and ran the command, and the open files kept changing -- this was immediately following a reboot. I suspect it is the cache-dirs feature doing its thing. I gave it a few minutes and the array stopped and I was able to add my disk, format, and go from there. This whole mess started when the web interface became unavailable. I renamed my sab/sb/cp plg files to turn them off, and now have renamed the sab plg (and rebooted) to turn them on one by one... And now sab is not available to manage. One thing at a time, I guess.
  20. Memtest ran until just now and found no errors. I was preclearing a disk on another machine. I installed it and booted the server. The web interface started, and I attempted to stop the array so I could add the new disk. The endless "attemping to unmount disks" loop occured, and I closed the browser and re-opened it, and now unraid's management interface is, once again, unavailable. No plug ins are running except Simple Features. I can't manage my server.
  21. Well, memtest has been running for three hours and has completed 7 passes without any failures. Should I let it keep going?
  22. So I've never set up a cron job. I know. I created a file in /etc/cron.d called "permissions," owned by root, and set it to RW (just like the "root" script that runs the mover script. In this script I have: 00 2 * * * /usr/local/sbin/newperms /mnt/user/movies 00 3 * * * /usr/local/sbin/newperms /mnt/user/tv_shows So, the way I understand it, at 0200 daily it will run newperms on my movies share, and at 0300 daily it will run newperms on my tv shows share. Is this correct, or should I simply append the two commands to the "root" script that is already there? Do I need to kill and restart any process to make this take effect, or is this all I need to do?
  23. Disabled Sab, SB, and CP. Rebooted and Simple Features came right up. Lasted about 20 hours, now I can't get anything on port 80.
