Hi all, How concerned should I be about 187, Reported uncorrect error on parity drive (only 1 of them)? Wait till the drive starts having multiple ones of these? Or consider changing the parity drive sooner rather than later? I have a "hot spare" waiting, but if I have to replace a drive, I'd like to get another one just in case.

Proper method to determine what is preventing array from unmounting?
By the way, by "new installation", I mean really new. New hardware, new everything. Running basically nothing, the only apps are binhex-minidlna (used for my HD Homerun system, which records TV), and community applications. That's it. I took down all computers in the house, the HD homerun, and my HT computer. By "took down", I mean unplugged if I had to or shutdown if it was a computer. As far as I could tell, nothing was connected to the unraid server. I did have one computer running to run the web interface, but that's all that was running. The new server is in its new location, and it's running a parity check, which will take 15 or so hours I think. So, I can't attempt to shut it down until tomorrow.

I know this is an old thread, but I had the same problem today. A new installation, but still I could not shutdown through the web interface. I had to put on my monitor and keyboard and use "powerdown". I had stopped anything I thought might be accessing the server prior to this. Is there anyway to determine why I can't unmount?

Unmountable: Too many missing/misplaced devices: Every time...
This also worked for me. I had an 8TB drive connected as cache, but wanted that as a spare. I already had a 256GB M.2 drive that was free. I bought a 256MB SSD drive so that I could use RAID1 for the cache, and keep the 8TB drive as a spare. I powered down the array, configured everything in hardware, brought the system back up and configured the two SSD drives as a cache pool. Got the same error for the two cache drives: too many missing/misplace drives. (Not sure whether this was caused by the new SSD was not formatted - the M.2 was formatted for cache, as I had used it previously for cache.) I did not have any dockers/VMS. I stopped the array, removed the two SSDs from cache so there was no cache/pool, then started everything. Stopped the array, added back in the two SSDs in the cache/pool, then restarted the array. This worked.

Does marking this as "solved" mean all of this is solved? Or only part of it? @itimpi solved two parts of my issue, but I still have questions as to how to copy files and also whether to rename my 4th 8TB drive (meant for a hot spare) as a temporary cache while copying.

I just brought up a new server, with four 8 TB drives and 1 256GB SSD meant for cache. This is to replace my aging (as in really old) unraid server. I need to copy >10TB from the old server to the new server. At end of copying, I would like: one 8TB parity drive; two 8TB data drives; one 8TB "hot spare"; 256 GB SSD cache. Questions: - Cache: Looking at the page for Main/Array devices, there is no cache option. Did the cache go away? - Rename server: How do I rename the server? (Did this on my current server, but it's been 10+ years since I've done it.) - How do I copy >10TB of files from my old server to my new server? If there is still a cache drive, should I make the fourth 8TB drive be a cache drive temporarily (will be a hot spare) to allow a lot of a copying to happen before the cache is written to the array? Thank you.

Memory and fan questions (used for NAS)
I'm setting up a new server to replace my really old server. I bought this motherboard: ASRock Rack E3C246D4U Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C246: AsRock motherboard I was under a heavy time constraint, and bought ONE SIMM of this memory: Crucial Technology 16GB 288-Pin EUDIMM DDR4 (PC4-19200) Server Memory Module, CL=17, Unbuffered, 2400 MT/S Speed, ECC, 1.2V, 2048Meg x 72, Dual Rank, x8 Based I did not think about using dual-channel memory, which requires TWO SIMMs. For an unraid server where I use this (currently) for a NAS only, should I buy another SIMM to enable dual-channel support? I put the motherboard into a rack-mounted case: Rosewill case There are two large fans in front of and blowing air over the 3.5 inch drives (I'll have 4 drives, can add 8), and two smaller fans at the back of the case, extracting air from the case. There are two speed-controlled fan connections on the motherboard. The current fans will not connect to these and instead connect directly to the power supply. This means they run at only one speed. Should I buy fans that can be controlled by using the connections on the motherboard? If so, which fans should I control (2 large front, 2 small back, or both), and is there such thing as a fan splitter that can control 2 fans? By the way, I have started other threads and have not been able to get back to them. This is because my mother was in and out of the hospital, and I had no time to do anything. This also caused me to not take enough time when ordering memory to think about dual channel memory. Unfortunately, my mother passed away. But that now means I have enough time to put this server together.

Help selecting components, IPMI, mainly NAS
I am getting a new unraid system to replace my aging system. I currently use my system mainly as a NAS. Don't really do anything with it other than that, yet. My do so in the future. Bought a case to put in a rack. Bought a 650W power supply. Have three 8TB drives to use, gives me 16TB data, one parity drive. This is 1TB more than my current system, which still has 5TB+ free. (And with things like Disney+, I tend to be adding less to the server, not more.) Thinking of this motherboard: AsRock Rack E3C246D4U Micro ATX Server Motherboard This processor: Intel Xeon E-2146G Coffee Lake 3.5 GHz LGA 1151 80W Does this seem reasonable? Thinking of ECC memory, but the choices are overwhelming. This supports "Dual channel DDR4 2666/2400 ECC". Any recommendations? (One issue when I go to Newegg is there appears to be multiple versions of, e.g., 2666 memories. Other issues are wide ranging prices, different manufacturers, etc. Also, how much memory do I need?) For a cache drive, do I "need" an SSD? If so, how big? Thank you.

Disk started giving errors...wait to see what happens or replace?
Sorry, I had a birthday party for my daughter, then had to take my mother to the hospital the next day, then work started. Unraid is still giving me errors, saying that there is something stuck. To which file are you referring? The log file? Does there need to be an immediate error (for instance, running the web interface, I had no message this morning, but did last night). If I want to remove the cache and replace the drive, do I: 1) take system offline 2) remove the cache from the sysem 3) remove the drive from the system 4) add the former cache drive as the disk that I just removed Or are there other steps, such as reformatting the cache drive (formatted in btrfs) to xfs? Thank you.

Disk started giving errors...wait to see what happens or replace?
During this month's parity check a disk started giving errors: The system says that parity is valid, but there were 108 errors on Disk 2. I have a total of 6 data drives. Never had errors on any disk before. I have a "hot" spare that I'm using as cache, same size. Should I replace Disk 2 with the spare? Or do more debugging/wait for a while? Thank you.

mITX motherboard which can support 7+ drives on board
I realize this thread is a bit old, but I like this list of parts, and I'm thinking IPMI would be nice to have. I'm trying to build a rack-mounted server to replace my aging, massive 9-drive server. I have 3 8TB drives ready to go (gives me the same storage capacity I have now). I currently use my unraid server simply as NAS. Given more time in the future, I may implement more though. Just to clarify, to get IPMI and ECC, I need the AsRock Rack E3C246D2I? Is ECC critical or just nice to have? If I start with 3 8-TB drives and the other list of parts, what size power supply do I need? Do I use a cache drive that's SSD? (At one time, this was overkill, but I think this may have changed.) By the way, trying to find stuff now is complicated. I settle on a rack-mount computer case, for instance, and either it's out of stock or ships in months. There's a limited selection of in-stock. And parts prices are all over the map. Sometimes cheaper on Amazon, sometimes unavailable, but on NewEgg, or just cheaper on NewEgg. Sometimes other websites suggested here are cheaper (but I have never dealt with them). Makes it quite time-consuming.

I installed this docker and when I try to use http://tower:9000, I get a sign in screen, asking for a mysqueezebox.com email and password, which I do not have. Is this normal? For me, I keep using LMS, because I can select what genres to play. So, I can have a bunch of Christmas music, but uncheck this in random play, and never hear a Christmas song. With other systems, this is difficult to do. In fact, I went from LMS to Sonos, but went back to LMS, because I want to play random play of all my songs...but not, say, Christmas or Children's. I couldn't find an easy way to do that on Sonos.

I have a similar issue, that just happened. I was able to connect via port 9000 (eg, Http://myserveripaddress:9000), but now I get no response on any of my computers. (Oddly, my Squeezebox still connects and plays fine...but none of my computers do.) Without having access to the web interface, I can't get it to look for new and changed music and I can't reconfigure anything. I removed the docker container and reinstalled. That did not work. Perhaps there's a setting in the Appdata somewhere that's causing the issue? I'll try this weekend to also remove all the appdata and then remove and reinstall the container to see what happens. The current log lists information from a current "Christmas" playlist, which means the LMS must have gotten this info from the previous appdata. I don't have time to remove the appdata and reinstall now, though. And the log doesn't seem to be helpful (has warnings about songs in the playlist...and I don't understand the warnings.) If this does not work, I'll just go back to using LMS on my HT computer...but that means I have to have that computer running all the time (can't put it to sleep or you lose the library).

Thank you. In real life terms, it's going to take me about 2-3 days for each of these. I only have 4 disks of real data (and one newly added disk that happened to be empty). I estimate in real terms, given my time constraints, it'll be a month to do this, as I usually only have time on weekends. One thing I don't understand is, given it could take days to copy and compare, how do you ensure the "old" drive isn't being overwritten? In other words, I ran rsync yesterday morning (I couldn't check until today). How do I know that today there's not a file that's been changed on the "old" drive that's been modified? Someone had recommended to run two command prompts in windows and use the dir command, which I did this morning. As of this morning, I know the same number of files and bytes are being used, but I don't know if one file was updated on the "old" drive, if the updated file contains the same number of bytes. Or I am being too cautious? (I'm about to erase the "old" drive, but I'm just wondering.) See for example reply 12 in this thread. That doesn't answer my question. I did what is in post 12 (now in post 2). But if you wait, say, a week after running "rsync -nrcv /mnt/[source] /mnt[dest]/t >/boot/verify.txt", then you can't be assured that some file was overwritten with data having the same size. Or am I wrong? OK, I'm going to complain again. For those of us who use unraid as a NAS, set it up and forget it until we have to do something, there's no central repository of information that's easy and quick to understand and follow. For instance, I'm following the information from post #2 above. Post #2 does not say anything about "If you're not experiencing problems, you don't have to change file systems." I saw the first post about corruption, and simply thought I HAD to change to XFS. Furthermore, there's no indication as to what problems you would be experiencing. This is especially true when searching via an Internet search engine. What I find when searching are threads with many posts, some of them from versions before mine. Do they apply? I have no idea. I have to wade through 50+ posts to figure out what I'm supposed to do (like this thread), and many of which might. For me, I had information on the cache drive, and the system was unresponsive. I tried to shut it down from the console/keyboard and display at the server (and it may have been shutting down, but it did not appear to being doing so), so I turned off the server and turned it back on. I lost about 10 hours worth of work that was on the cache drive (and I thought was also at least partially on the array, although I could not find it even with repair of the file system), which for me as an attorney who gets paid for the work I actually do, that's a significant loss of income I had to completely make up. I subsequently learned that I should have used additional commands to determine what has happening, but when you're trying to start work that morning, you HAVE to have a working system. You have 15 minutes to determine what to do. Now, I've reconfigured the server and my system to make it more secure (copy the cache to the array every hour, moved all my work files to a share that does not use the cache, set up a Windows backup to another computer to back up every hour, etc.). Was that slowdown caused by the RFS? I don't know. I've had my unraid server for many years, and I remember only having to shutdown the system while it was running twice. One time with no data loss, one time with data loss. So, am I wasting all this time converting from RFS to XFS? I have no idea. However, since I've started it and am on drive 2 of 4, I might as well continue. But at least there could be some easily accessible resource that would tell me why I would want to do this and how. You have the how in post 2 but not the why. What I'm doing now is keeping notes about things like unraid and other infrequently performed actions (eg, opening and closing pool, cooking Christmas dinner, etc.) and using those later to refresh my memory (and with unraid, there's a lot of refreshing -- I don't even remember that I'm "root" or how to telnet in to the server). The problem is I store these notes on -- wait for it -- the unraid server. If the unraid server is unresponsive, my main recourse is to search using an Internet search engine. (I forgot that I do have two backups of the data on the server; one at home, one offsite. I could use the one at home, but I did not remember that. I'll keep that in mind for the future.) Anyway, if there's one thing that would improve unraid is a way to easily find information. I literally stumbled on this post, for instance. Upgrading my system (the only reason I started this process) has taught me that I need to revisit my system and these boards more than I used to. I plan on reviewing these boards once a month now. I don't want to end on bad note. I have used unraid since version 4.7 and 99.9999% of the time, it's been great. The recent improvements with version 6 have been awesome and make it much easier to use. But if there was a way to make it easier to find information, it would be good.

Just a point of reference. I'm trying to copy about 1.8 TB from an RFS-formatted drive to an XFS formatted drive, and I started the process last night around 7:30 pm. It's 6:13 am (let's say about 12 hours), and 742 GB (less than half) has been copied. I'm using an ASRock - A55M-HVS motherboard with AMD A4-3300 APU (dual core) with Radeon™ HD Graphics @ 2500 and with 4GB of RAM. Memory usage is about 31% and CPU load is varying between 15 and 40%. It looks like the motherboard supports SATA II, but I don't remember the speed of the RAM. The motherboard supports DDR3 2400+(OC)/1866/1600/1333/1066/800. I probably bought a middle grade RAM. Based on this estimate, it could take 24 hours or so to copy each disk, and I have four disks to copy.

Thank you. I stopped the array, selected XFS for the new drive, restarted, and formatted the drive. I am on 6.2.4, but I can't remember whether XFS was automatically selected and overwrote that with RFS. It may have been the latter, as all the other drives were RFS, and I likely thought it was better to have them all with the same file system. It wasn't until I stumbled upon this thread that I realized I should do something else.

Shoot...if I remove the fifth drive to format it with XFS, does the system have to perform a parity check? I know when you ADD a drive, you have to perform a parity check, but it also makes sense to me that if you REMOVE a drive, you'd have to do a parity check. I ask only because for me, that's about of day of waiting (it takes at least 8 hours for a parity check, which means I should start this process tonight if I can, as then the parity check might be done in the morning). And then if I add the drive back in, I assume that's another parity check? So, basically 16+ hours of parity checks just to format a single drive that's already part of the array?

I just performed a major set of upgrades to my unraid server. In this process, I just added a fifth data drive, which is currently empty. I have the following data drives: 3, 3, 2, 2, 2 TB. The fifth data drive is 2TB, which is smaller than two other data drives (3TB). However, those drives were 1.5TB and contain 1.5TB or less of data, as I just upgraded them to 3TB. If the data on each drive is less than 2TB, can I use the empty 2TB data drive to start this process? Or do I still need to use a 3TB drive (which I can do -- both cache/hot spare and second parity drive are 3TB). Also, I noticed my cache drive is BTRFS. Should I change this to XFS also? Thank you.

Sorry, I missed that. I think I got sidetracked by your long post. You also have to realize that I have incredibly limited time to do this. I basically have maybe 15 minutes or so every few weeks to pursue these types of projects. I work from as early as I can get into my office until as late as I can stay. Two days a week, I go in as early as possible so I can get home to have dinner with the family. My weekends are filled with other projects. I have a mentally ill mother I'm trying to take care of, for instance. I have a ton of stuff on my plate, so when I click on "view the reply at..." and it comes up with the latest post (NOT the post from developer), I read that post and your post and not the earlier posts. So, to be honest with you, I had no idea anyone posted before your post. I will upgrade (when I get the time -- have no idea when that will be, probably several months), and report back.

Thank you, Frank. That was very informative. I don't see what you say I should see. Here's what I see instead. I'm on version 6.1.4. I've installed this twice and uninstalled between installations. Is there anything else I can do?
