  1. Hi Tom, This WHS add-on looks very interesting! Well done! In my usage, which is unRAID for DVD rips, music backups, and photo backups, and then WHS for running SageTV and short term TV recordings storage, the 'live' music share, the 'live' photo share, and of course PC client backups. Can this system backup the WHS "system" drive as well? Can it be scripted to leave unRAID on all the time, yet still backup the music and photo shares on a scheduled basis? Thanks for any info! -PGPfan
  2. Try www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10226&cs_id=1022601&p_id=2514&seq=1&format=2&style=. I've used them MANY times and they are a GREAT company to deal with - that is, if you are in the US. -PGPfan

    Update

What would you want to do with capability? I would use them as the storage for my HDTV streams. This would allow me to use multiple drives in the system and get better write performance. I don't have a need to have my tv recordings under parity protection, but at the same time I want a single media server for all my media clients to point to. At the same time I would use the protected drives for storing recordings that I do want protected. I second your thoughts entirely! Tom, any thoughts on a possible ETA? -PGPfan
  4. Based on what I've read, it's a 'Windows' only thing, meaning it will only stream to Windows approved devices. That is strike 1. Next is that is only available with new hardware, ie - you have to buy the thing 'precanned'. Strike 2. It does have a nice built-in backup system/method. It'd be nice to see Tom add something comparable to our unRaids. Overall, it really offers very little that we don't already have. At least Microsoft (and the general public as a result) will start to recognize the unique benefits that an unRaid like approach to the 'Raid' concept provides. No need to be one of the drones that waste money at making an 'enterprise lite' hardware Raid 5 system for the home. -PGPfan
  5. Hi DigitalDivide, Tom has stated already that once he's done with expanding the features of "User Shares" to include full read AND write that he'll be creating a webpage to better explain it all. As for how it works now, if you use your 3 drives as examples then you create a 'Movie' share in each one. In each one you have a folder for each movie title which contains the actual movie files. Now, if you enable User Shares then you can simply view the contents of the "Movie" share and in it you will see ALL movies as though they are on one disk. It works well, but you can't write to that share. To write, you'd have to use something like: Disk2/Movies/[title of new folder]. Does this help? -PGPfan
  6. I vote a definate NO. This whole 'stigma' thing is, frankly bullshit. The guys hasn't been convicted of anything and here we are running around as though he is guilty. Shame on us. Who cares about guilt or innocense when it comes to using reiserfs? My computer doesn't really care, nor do I. It's like the crap about removing all images of the 'twin towers' from all software, movies, etc. after 9/11 and stil saying 'we will never forget'! There are WAY more important things to accomplish on 'ye olde laundry list' than to try and do the 'politically correct' thing. If reiserfs is the best, then keep using it! Sorry for the rant, but this whole politically correct attitude that society is taking lately REALLY pisses me off. -PGPfan
  7. Hi gnollo, Just go to http://www.lime-technology.com/wordpress/?page_id=33 and you'll find all the instruction you need to gather the correct info for Tom. -PGPfan
  8. Regarding the 4-into-3 cages, I understand that these are designed for the "Stacker" case. Do you guys that have them have any opinion how difficult it might be to use these cages in some other case? I'm leaning towards one of the 'cube' style server cases by YeongYang and would like to use them if possible. Thanks! -PGPfan
  9. For copying my personal DVD's to my server there is no question (to me, at least) that the best s/w to use is AnyDVD. Totally transparent to Windows and makes copying truly a 'drag and drop' activity. Always updated (for free!), and does far more than what you might think it could do. Go to www.slysoft.com for more details. -PGPfan
  10. Thanks Dave for the update. I'd much rather Tom get the much needed rest than to risk burning out just for the update. We know it is coming very soon, that's good enough for me. -PGPfan
  11. I'd agree totally with dschur, except that I'd change question 3. What about the customer support (I mean personal support instead of thru' this forum)? to a 3. I agree with the disappearance being disconcerting, but forum aside Tom has NEVER failed to reply quickly to any emails for support I've ever had to make. P.S. - It would be great to see the 'multiple read/write performance' better so I could use my unRaid as the direct storage for my SageTV PVR instead of having to do 'late night transfers' of the shows I want to keep. Otherwise, it's been GREAT. -PGPfan
  12. Hi Joe, Thanks for the reply! I guess I don't really need it after all. Regarding the YAC client script, any chance you could post a quick 'how-to' on setting that up? I'd love to be able to have the same thing on my server. -PGPfan
  13. First off, thanks Tom for the update! Was a piece of cake to install. One question, however. Although I haven't run into any trouble booting my unRaid, I didn't see the 'fix18' script anywhere in the updated .zip file. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks again! (Both Tom, and Joe L.) -PGPfan
  14. Hi Mike, When you say you talked to Tom today, do you mean via e-mail? I assume you'd have mentioned this thread to him (and asked if he's coming back) if you actually spoke to him. -PGPfan
  15. Teamhood, It may not apply in your case, but I'd make sure that there aren't any envelopes or anything in any packing materials. When I got my USB stick, I was surprised how small it is. It came in a manila 8.5 x 11 enveleope with a couple sheets of info regarding system setup. I hope you do find it! -PGPfan
  16. I too am concerned. I've always tried giving Tom the benefit of doubt, but I think a weekly 'status' thread at the very least would calm some nerves. Even it it's just a 'been super busy in the real world, haven't dropped unRaid' would suffice. I'm thankful for folks like Joe L. that freely give support and knowledge in lieu of Tom being here. Regarding timely shipping, I ordered my USB thumb drive from Tom on Saturday the 10th. After my second email to find out status, Tom replied oh the 14th that my unRaid software was shipping that day via overnight post. I live in the 'sticks' so overnight was actually 2 nights but it DID make it here. Hope to setup the server this weekend, but obviously Tom is still getting hardware out. -PGPfan
  17. Hi bdee1, Your best bet is to look at the hardware that Tom sells. He has a 'starter kit' that has the mb, cpu, memory, OS on USB, controller cards, etc. Basically everything needed except case, pwr supply, hard drives. You don't have to buy from him, but if you get the same hardware elsewhere, you WILL have a compatible system. -PGPfan
  18. BLKMGK, I'm not sure what I've done to you personally to attract your wrath. I've NEVER claimed to have studied the GPL. I've never claimed that Tom's software didn't use GPL code in it. I've never claimed anything as fact other than to point out that Tom had already commented on the GPL situation in this very thread and that was ignored by the 'zealots'. Some of the zealots suggested joining the 'GPL violators mailing list'. This doesn't sound (to me, anyhow) like a voice of reason, but of a "fanboy" to quote sanmaster. Your stand certainly is a reasonable one, heck you were one of the original 'guniea pigs' of this software and you cut Tom some slack. As for me, I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but I try. I'm just sooo sick of all the legalese that comes with everything nowadays that for something like software I ignore it for the most part. I don't think a lot of people truly read the EULA, listen to the radio station ad disclaimers, etc. It is in this context that I have no desire to learn the intricacies of the GPL. If you take offense personally at that, please accept my apology. There are (sadly) so many 'laws' passed now that many good, decent folks are criminals by default. In my opinion, it's those laws and the lawmakers in these cases that are criminal as examplified by the DMCA. No, I don't respect the DMCA at all. Nor do I copy and sell DVD's or audio CD's. I see no law broken if I'm harming noone. Tom was in the beginning on hiatus as I'm sure you remember, possibly due partially to all the pressure 'we' as interested parties put on him. I just railed against the zealots out of frustration considering that I viewed their 'pressure' doing potentially more harm to Tom's presence than good, especially considering that I saw none of them with any thread activity over at AVS forum where most of us came from. They seemed like little 'tattle-tales' and frankly it peeved me no end. Again, if something I've said or done to you personally offends you please accept my apology. -PGPfan
  19. Ok, one final post just to clarify things (I promise it's the last post from me in this thread, sirquack) Fanboy? Hardly. If you honestly look at yourself, you'll see that by being a GPL 'enforcer' you sir, are the epitome of a fanboy. As for your recommendation of reading the GPL, thanks for the suggestion but to be honest it doesn't interest me at all. unRAID may very well use GPL code in it, Tom has said he' s working towards compliance, but I personally couldn't care less. What I do care about is that unRAID offers something different as a media storage product than any other solution I've seen. Is it worth the money to me? Yes. Which is why I'll be purchasing it soon. -PGPfan
  20. On second thought, ignore my last line. Don't post. I'm done with this pointless thread. -PGPfan
  21. SanMaster, start here: When I quoted you, YOU made the statement " I'm not looking to "troll" any free code, I'm looking out for the countless man hours of GPL code that has been used here with no acknowledgment." This sounds like you've been judge and jury as though you KNOW that GPL code FOR SURE has been used. You obviously hadn't been to the thread that Joe L. linked to otherwise you wouldn't be whining like you are. Simple as that. If you need any other simple explainations, feel free to whine some more and we can help you to understand things a bit better than you seem naturally able to. -PGPfan
  22. smeehrrr and rharvey, Thanks for replying for me. I saw the post by SanMaster, 'grand protector of all things not of his business' but just didn't have a chance to reply until now. I find it interesting how he knows "GPL code that has been used here with no acknowledgment" and doesn't own the software nor do I believe he's ever seen the source code. Amazing... -PGPfan
  23. Your 'request' for comment from the developers has already been done, see the SECOND POST IN THIS THREAD. (Man, you GPL Nazi's need to learn how to read) Why do you feel that you are somehow entitled to any explaination of how the software complies or doesn't to the GPL? Are you looking to troll for some free code? The dev has stated that he is well aware of what it necessary to be in 'compliance', you don't NEED any other comment. -PGPfan
  24. Brian E., Try and relax a little! The GPL Nazi's out there need to give Tom a little time to fix this. I'd much rather have good functioning software than anal retentive 'are you in compliance?' drones marching to "You must comply", "...Must comply", ".....Comply", (as sparks fly from the robot's head after being beaten by a 'real' human being). -PGPfanm
  25. Regarding initial SATA support, does this include the onboard SATA ports on the D865 or are you just referring to add in cards? Thanks for a great product, Tom! -PGPfan
