  1. I just took a look out of interest, and there are a lot of unanswered support questions on their forums. It's a flexible product, but isn't supported by Win8 it seems. I'm pretty happy with unraid, it does what I want so far and it's pretty maintenance free. The only reason I would like to see 5 go final is so that all the very helpful people making plugins can agree on a standard for them to be implemented. It seems a bit hit and miss at the moment, and a few like SNAP seem to be holding off developing until a final release is out. The releases keep chopping and changing to many things and it's making work for plugin developers. I'm also interested in buying unraid, I'm currently on the free 3 drive version, but at the moment I'm holding off until it's a final release is confirmed, and released. At the moment it does what I want it to do, but my concern is that if plugin developers get frustrated and move on, then I'll have to find something else too so that I can run my extra applications I want to offload to a server. Edit: RC12 has been running on my machine since it came out and I've had zero issues so far!
  2. I've RMA'd a couple of WD drives, and one Samsung. I have to admit the older SATA 120g and 320g drives I've have for years ago are still going strong (I use them for my apps drive, in a USB enclosure for timeshifting TV etc). They don't like being attached under AHCI mode, and make a god awful noise to let you know they aren't happy! I RMA'd a Samsung 1Tb drive because of noise just after seagate bought them out. It would make a squealing noise, but all the drive tests came back ok. They replaced it without an issue, so it doesn't necessarily have to have bad sectors. I ran that through a pre-clear before send it back to ensure my data was removed (well as best as I can). I've had a few WD drives die that were in USB enclosures. I actually thought it was the USB interface, not the drive, but upon opening it the drive wouldn't even spin up or register on the PC. They went in the bin but because of that experience I don't buy WD green drives. So far my Samsung 2Tb drives have been reliable, and have served their purpose (only had 1 year warranty) and prices are returned to normal, so if need be I could easily upgrade to a better drive now.
  3. Just to update regarding this issue. I experienced it on and off, and then decided to expand my storage by replacing the 1Tb drive unaligned drive, with a new pre-cleared 2TB ST2000DM001 drive which is aligned. I haven't seen this issue since, either all drives are running or all drives are spun down. I'm going to buy unraid, and preclear the 1Tb as a aligned drive, and expand the storage once again just to be the on the safe side.
  4. Downloaded, installed and running. Thanks Tom.
  5. My build is below, and parity with the 2Tb drives was around 60MB/s+ which was faster than with 4.7 As 36bitter said, I'm getting the same 25MB/s over the network. Doesn't bother me because once the initial upload in done, it's just individual files and a lot of reading (which is much faster). The N40L is a great little box. I've got an extra drive in the ODD bay as an apps drive. Gets a little hot in there 40degC though. Personally I have never see the BIOS, I just put the USB key in and away it went.
  6. I have done that, but it's a small HP N40L, and I have an apps drive that runs constantly just above in the optical bay. Strange as it may seem it felt like my 2Tb drive was spinning, not the 1Tb drive that is listed as spun up in the unraid menu. I actually just did this myself. My system was idle, so I loaded up //Tower in my browser, and it pauses, and you can hear a drive spin up (which sounded like my Seagate 2Tb drive NOT the 1Tb drive unraid is reporting as spun up. The Seagate has a very unique spin up sound), and then the unraid menu appears, and disk1 is spinning. unmenu reports the drive not spinning still. I've only got 3 drives, and I've got all my shares set to highwater, and across my two data drives. I thought unraid spun up both drives when I access media so having 1 report as running is a little strange. FYI this is the drive that reports as spun up. It's always this drive. disk1 SAMSUNG_HD103UI_S1LMJX0Z900112 (sdc) 976762552 but this drive is the one that felt like it was running disk2 ST2000DM001-9YN164_S2F008LP (sdd) 1953514552 It's not a major issue, but will be using a bit of power if it's spinning. I'm just reporting it here so that others can say if they have experienced it or not, and hopefully Tom can take a look at the problem if he sees fit.
  7. This issue has appeared again. Seems to only effect drive 1, the only unaligned drive. I know unraid, and unmenu might get their info from different places, but it seems strange that unraid is reporting only 1 drive spun up and reporting a temp, because if any files are accessed on the server it spins up all 3 drives. Mainly because I have all the shares set to pool across disk1,disk2. Anyone experiencing the same? Anyone have unaligned and aligned discs in an array and getting a similar issues? I am considering upgrading my 1Tb drive to a 2Tb drive, it's been precleared as aligned, so that might solve the issue, then I can preclear the old 1Tb and add that in as extra storage.
  8. Great idea. I'm sure many users will use this before upgrading. I wish it had been available when I upgraded! It would have saved me a heap of time searching the forum, especially regarding permissions on an apps drive/cache. I vote that this becomes a sticky!
  9. Well it might be nothing mate, but I would have thought if the drive was on, it would say on, and off it would say off. How either get there data doesn't matter to me, only that they report what is actually happening with the drive. Is it on or off, I don't have a clue. I did notice that unraids menu doesn't change even when I spin down the drives. But I would like to know which one is correct! Also it seemed strange to me that only one drive is spun up, because they are part of a 2 drive pool for all my data and it's the only unaligned disk left over in my system.
  10. Had a similar issue accessing the webui today. Thought I was going bonkers! I could see unmenu, and access via putty. In the end it was my browser's cache. I found I could access the webui by using the IP address of the server in the browser, but not Tower. I cleared the cache off the browser (Chrome in my case) and it was all back to normal and I could access it with //Tower. Phew.
  11. Thanks RobJ, Well I had Universal Media Server (an offshoot of PS3MS) running nicely on 4.7, and I upgraded to RC10 really so that I could run Plex with my new LG TV. It's a blessing in disguise really, because I've now disabled UMS, and I'll just run Plex (which also does DLNA). I had previously had issues with my WDTV but I upgraded the firmware, and watched a show on it while someone else was watching on the LG in the other room, and it handled it well. UMS was a bit messy to install, lots of dependencies to get it to run right, including running Java, and 53 packages. It could possibly be that some packages included ran fine in 4.7 and not in 5RC10. Thanks everyone for the help, I'm happy to say this issue is solved for now.
  12. I was playing around yesterday fixing the crond error issue I was having, and found the source (my UMS DLNA server) and I noticed that this issue has also not come back. It was persistent over a few reboots, and I still think it was strange that they both had different information.
  13. Just realised that UMS.sh fails to start on a reboot, so it must be one of the 53 packages that it requires that cause the crond fault! Likelyhood of me being able to find out what one it is will be rather slim. Linux support isn't up there with with windoz for PMS/UMS, so I'll try a few other DLNA servers I think if plex doesn't work well. At least the crond fault has been stopped, and I can now get my daily reports from the server.
  14. Looks like I'm on my own with this one, I'll just document my progress to so that if anyone can help, they can see what I've already done. I've disabled plex and it still occurred, so that's makes the install exactly the same as my previous 4.7 install. Possibly something is different between 4.7 and RC10. So I went back to stock RC10, I removed everything from my go script apart from the default lines and the error didn't appear at 47mins past, so assuming it's not an unraid issue. Next I reactivated my apps drivein the go script, no crond error Then I reactivated unmenu in the go script, no crond error Then I reactivated UMS.sh (Universal Media Server) and the crond error appeared! Now I just have to nail down what is causing the crond issue. Might be time to try something else due to the number of packages UMS requires on installation. I've found plex to be a little unreliable with my WDTV live, but it's fantastic with my LG TV. I might see if the WDTV firmware upgrade makes it any better.
  15. Hi, Just thought I would post this up. Running 5RC10. I noticed that on the main unraid menu one drive it listed with a temperature, and the others are spun up. This is after being on for a long time, and the drive should have spun down. I only have 2 data drives at the moment, and media is shared across both, so they should both spin up, when in use. Anyway, today I noticed unmenu has them all listed as spun down!! Screen shots are attached, and yes I tried F5 to refresh the page, and I've rebooted, this is a persistant issue. So any ideas which one is correct? One thing I did notice is that the 2x2Tb drives (Partiy & Disk2) are 4K aligned, but the 1Tb is unaligned. Syslog attached. Photos (had to load them to photobucket, too big) syslog-2013-01-29.txt
  16. Any ideas if smtp_status.sh is causing the issue? It's the only think under cron hourly. I do have smtp set up in unmenu, or is this left over from simple features?
  17. also I rebooted again today, and they are still appearing.
  18. Bobbiemarker, It might be your switch, and it's probably worth taking a look at that. Don't assume that it's not at fault. I was using a Netgear 8 Gigabit port unmanaged switch plugged into my Billion 7800N (also Gigabit Ethernet), and the speeds I was getting was extremely slow from Win7 to my unraid server. After a bit of trouble shooting I took the switch out of the equation and plugged all the network cables into my router and the problem went away. I googled the switch and there were a number of others that had the same issue. I seemed that something went wrong with it but being unmanaged there is no way of checking anything.
  19. Thanks Joe for the help. root@Tower:~# /usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.daily /etc/cron.daily/certwatch: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate: and when I ran hourly the drives spun up. root@Tower:~# /usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.hourly /etc/cron.hourly/smtp_status.sh: When I ran these in Putty no errors where generated in the Syslog, it only showed me logging in.
  20. Hi, Just after upgrading from 4.7 to 5.0RC10 I noticed that I was getting these crond errors. Any idea what they relate too? They are every hour which is when crond is set to run. 47mins after the hour. Jan 17 21:47:01 Tower kernel: crond[20340]: segfault at b77b051c ip b77b051c sp bfea4df4 error 15 in ld-2.11.1.so[b77b0000+1000] (Errors) I have Plex installed as the only plug in. I've uninstalled simple features & drive mount (removed the plg files & the folder created by them), and run unmenu, and SAB, SB and UMS off my apps drive as I always did under 4.7. And I have rebooted, and it still remains. Any ideas? Syslog attached. syslog-2013-01-17.txt
  21. Personally I think we need to work towards a final stable release (I'll let Tom decide on when he's happy it's stable), and put any further updates/fiddling into 5.1+ On a side shoot work on a 64-bit kernel as a separate project to see if it works first. I've upgraded from 4.7 to 5.0RC10 last week, not out of choice, but because I desperately wanted to run Plex on my media server for my new LG TV. I think the plugins, although still in the early stages are great and that a 5 Final will spur these projects on. Tom, I'm not sure if your ready for this, but have you thought about utilising some of the clued up forum members to work on unraid?
  22. Woohoo. It's running. Don't ask me what I did, I don't know! lol I played about with the config file and change unraid-plex to nobody to see if that would work, same error, so I deleted boot/config/plugins/plexmediaserver folder, and rebooted. After the reboot I just entered /mnt/apps/plex/tmp/Library /mnt/apps/plex/tmp Pressed apply, then I went back and said to enable. I didn't expect much, but it suddently appeared with "Status: RUNNING with version: v0.9.7.10.382-e1741bc" Success at last. I just wish I knew what I did to get it running! lol
  23. Ok, after UMS.sh having issues I figure Plex might be in the same boat. So, furthering my linux knowledge (it's amazing how much you learn when something doesn't work) I deleted Plex's config and rebooted. I then ran it using the stock /tmp and /tmp/Library settings and it ran! I'm still a linux newbie, but isn't /tmp running in memory which means it won't be persistant on a reboot? Anyway I ran ls -l /tmp on the folders it created drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 2013-01-14 08:48 Library/ drwxr-xr-x 3 unraid-plex users 0 2013-01-14 08:50 Application\ Support/ I then deleted the old plex folders on my apps drive, and added /mnt/apps/plex in front of plex's stock /tmp and /tmp/Library folders. It created the folders but doesn't start! I ran ls -l /mnt/apps/plex/ and then on the folders under it. drwxr-xr-x 3 unraid-plex users 72 2013-01-14 08:59 tmp/ drwxr-xr-x 3 unraid-plex users 88 2013-01-14 08:59 Library/ drwxr-xr-x 2 unraid-plex users 48 2013-01-14 08:59 Application\ Support/ The only difference I can see is that Library is running as root root, and on the apps drive as unraid-plex users. The strange thing is that in the syslog is says this. Jan 14 08:59:26 Tower pms: mnt/apps/plex/tmp/Library/Application Support doesn't exist creating it Jan 14 08:59:26 Tower pms: Plex Media Server: changing owner of mnt/apps/plex/tmp/Library/Application Support from root to unraid-plex Jan 14 08:59:26 Tower pms: Plex Media Server: changing owner of mnt/apps/plex/tmp from root to unraid-plex What I've noticed is that plex is changing the Library folder from root root to unraid plex, but on this stock install Library remains as root root. Maybe that's the problem? I don't know how to fix that, I renamed the owner as root root, started plex and it just renames it again to unraid-plex users. @Benni-chan I just ran chown -R unraid-plex:users /mnt/apps/plex and it still won't start. FYI I have do files in these folders because this is the first time I've loaded plex, it's a clean install.
  24. Thanks Benni-chan again. That worked great for UMS.sh, and it's now running! Phew! At least the server is back up and running as it was on 4.7! Yay! I thought the newperms script only modified the array? It certainly only did disk1 and disk2, and didn't mentioned my apps drive when it was running. The backup files were on my PC which would have been uneffected during the newperms script too. Now, the plex issue. While I was there I ran ls -l at cd /mnt/apps drwxrwxrwx 2 nobody users 48 2012-03-16 21:02 Completed/ drwxrwxrwx 4 nobody users 112 2012-12-27 16:49 Completed\ Downloads/ drwxrwxrwx 2 nobody users 48 2013-01-13 22:40 NZBtodownload/ drwxrwxrwx 4 nobody users 104 2012-01-03 02:18 log/ drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 96 2013-01-13 22:15 plex/ drwxrwxrwx 6 nobody users 552 2012-09-12 14:52 ps3ms.170/ drwxrwxrwx 8 nobody users 1312 2013-01-03 10:05 ps3ms.old/ drwxrwxrwx 6 nobody users 576 2013-01-14 07:52 ums/ the plex folder is the only one that is root. I might be wrong, but I thought that with v5 it should run as nobody? I also then went to cd/mnt/apps/plex and ran ls -l again drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 88 2013-01-13 22:15 Library/ drwxr-xr-x 3 unraid-plex users 72 2013-01-13 21:31 tmp/ And it's using root and unraid-plex users? FYI I only have one users on the system, root according to unraid webui I was wondering if plex folders need modifying with permissions too? If so any idea how to change a folder (and any subfolders) with a+x permissions?
  25. Hi, I've upgraded from 4.7 to RC10. I reformated my apps drive, and mounted it via a go script, and copied back the data for my apps. SB, SAB, Universal Media Player etc. I can't get UMS.sh to run, it just says "nohup: failed to run command `./UMS.sh': Permission denied". This previously worked under 4.7 logged in as root. So I was wondering if I've got permission issues on my apps drive? I ran the following ls -l UMS.sh and got the following response -rw-rw-rw- 1 nobody users 1355 2012-10-01 12:47 UMS.sh I've found this upgrade pretty frustrating with all the issues trying to get an apps drive mounted on reboot (finally got a go script working) and now Plex plugin doens't want to start, and UMS.sh says I don't have permission to run it when I'm logged in as root! I did run the "New Permissions" script but that only changes files on the array. It let me thinking that I might have missed something on the apps drive. I did do a complete pre-clear of the apps drive, reformated, and copied all the files back to the apps drive from a backup. Any help would be appreciated. I've been at this all day and feel like I'm getting nowhere. Any help to keep me sane would be great.
