  1. is it easy to setup on the unraild server? It sounds like clients are easy, just like Plex. I read that lots of people were running xbmc on a mac mini, and that is when it got popular. I want to hear from people who installed this on their unraid server and life is good.
  2. see tag line for my server specs, but I'm running Plex server and clients. My clients include popcorn hour, ATV, iphone, ipad. I'm not happy with the fact that Plex has no parental controls so I'm thinking of trying to install XBMC on my unraid server, and using that client. Just looking for feedback on.... -Is XBMC easy to setup on unraid and is it reliable? -Are people who are using ATV2 happy with the XBMC client? -Do the parental controls work, easy to setup? -Is there any downside of switching from Plex to XBMC? -Does anyone have XBMC working on a Popcorn hour a-300? From what I read, XMBC was born on MAC OS and then Plex was a spinoff of that. Is there any other options that beat both of these? I know it's a ton of quesitons, but this is the place to get feedback from unraid server gods!
  3. true, that command shows I'm running 3.6.8 I actually wasn't able to locate any lines in my syslog that show I installed 3.6.8 via my GO file, so I don't think it is logged at all. I was surprised as I thought the syslog would show everything, including what you install via GO file.
  4. I think Frank is correct. 3.6.8 runs fine, and 3.6.9 does not install correctly. Also, you say that your log shows 3.6.7, which I think is what is included with this Unraid 5 RC8a build. Which log are you looking at? Do you get an error message when watching your console boot, specifically when Samba is installing? On mine, I see it verify the package, then I see a line that says Samba installed sucessfully. Do you see that line?
  5. I use this before, change to the version you DL mkdir /tmp/samba cd /tmp/samba wget http://us3.samba.org/samba/ftp/stable/samba-3.6.2.tar.gz wget -r -nH ftp://slackware.osuosl.org/pub/slackware/slackware-current/source/n/samba cp /tmp/samba/samba-3.6.2.tar.gz . cd pub/slackware/slackware-current/source/n/samba/ Delete old version of samba ####edit samba.SlackBuild, and change on 2 places so it's match the extension of the new file >>>> samba-*.tar.xz >>>> samba-*.tar.gz >>>> samba-$VERSION.tar.xz >>>> samba-$VERSION.tar.gz $ chmod +x samba.SlackBuild $ ./samba.SlackBuild Slackware package /tmp/samba-3.6.2-i486-1.txz created. //Peter '' Hi Peter - could use a little advice. I'm running samba-3.6.8-i486-1.txz and I have the install line in my Go file, works perfect. I decided to try the new version after seeing your post, samba-3.6.9-i486-1.txz. I connected to my Flash drive and copied the new file over (deleted the old file) and then updated my GO file to load the new file. I then Stopped my array and rebooted. After the reboot, I was not able to connect to my server via SMB at all. The log showed that the samba-3.6.9-i486-1.txz package was installed with no errors. No matter what I did, I was unable to connect via SMB. I decided to Stop my array so I could power down and use my Windows pc to put back the old file and restore the old Go file. However, the server would not Stop via webgui, at the bottom it said Retrying to unmount disk shares...and it hung there. I had to go to my server console and manually tell it to Shutdown and then Poweroff, which worked. I'm confused as to why the new Samba version was not working. After putting the old file back samba-3.6.8-i486-1.txz and rebooting, all is good again. It would seem the new version is not happy with unraid 5 RC8a. I assume you have this working and I'm curious what went wrong with this simple upgrade. Any ideas? I'm starting here in this thread to see if it is related to RC8a. Otherwise, I guess I can post this in User Custom... section. Thanks!
  6. My check completed today, and I think given my setup, then numbers are good. The only thing I find weird is that it reports that the check started yesterday, when it actually started today. Last checked on Thu Nov 1 12:33:46 2012 PDT (yesterday), finding 0 errors. * Duration: 12 hours, 33 minutes, 43 seconds. Average speed: 66.4 MB/sec
  7. I turned on section icons, and it seems to just that. I now see little icons next to the section discription. When you click on one, it takes you to the LT website to tell you about that section. Show Effect option is grayed out for me, and set to NO. I too would like to know what this is, and why I can't change mine. my icons in utilities are all b&w too, not sure why. That said, I don't have any extra icons, just what came with SF.
  8. Thanks! No, it wasn't truely empty. imac put a hidden folder in there so unraid wasn't showing me the delete option. Worked great once I deleted it. Thanks again!
  9. You first need to empty the share and then use the share properties to delete the share. The "created share" is the result of the Apple creating a directory in the root of the drive, the Mac does not intend to create a share, just a directory, because it is in the root of the drive it is "converted" to a share by unraid. "Converted" is the wrong word by the way, it is not really converted, it's just the way unraid works, a directory in the root of a drive -IS- a share .. The shares are empty - looking at the Share info, no delete button. Where exactly do you see the share properties where there is a delete button?
  10. cool, thanks! And I assume it will save this settings somewhere, meaning it's a one time event. Last question, will it work for all users on my imac, or do I need to run this command while logged in as each user?
  11. Interesting for sure. I did connect to my server from my imac the other day, and it must have created those directories. I didn't realize it could just create dirs and then those became shares. Is it just me or are we unable to detete Shares via the webgui? This is my first time looking to delete a Share and noticed there is only a "Add Share" button. I guess I have to use the console and just delete the directories?? For the new Samba, http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=22604.120 Read pages 9 and 10 for the link. Look for posts by Barzija you'll need to add a line in your Go file.
  12. Thanks, I want to do this. So I run this from my imac (not sure how, no command prompt), or on the unraid server?
  13. don;t know, but they have nothing to do with cache_dirs. They must apparently be top-level directories that have been created by one of your add-ons. Are you sure they are not related to Cache dirs? I didn't notice them before. The only other plugins that are new, are the new Samba and new SF (installed all of them)
  14. Thanks for the info on Cache dirs, I didn't ever turn it on because I hadn't read up on it. Now after reading your post, I went ahead and enabled it. I left all settings at default. The only thing I noticed is I now have two more shares that were created as a result of turning this on. They are Network Trash Folder - share settings are SMB only and set to Public Temporary Items - share settings are SMB only and set to Public Please confirm this is normal and that I should ignor those shares. Thanks again for the awesome post!
  15. Thanks! I'll try that...just need to look up the commands again, I don't use Telnet much because it scares me and I'm a Windows guy. If I'm on the console, is this the correct command /mnt/disk2# rm -rf TimeMachine/ Yes. Thanks! That worked, TimeHachine directory is gone. On the console, I do not see any other AFP directories. However, from the webgui, using the disk brower icon on the far right of the main page, I still see the .AppleDB directory on disk2. Again, this dosen't show up on the console, so the Period must be the hidden flag. I have AFP turned off, no shares. Also, browsing my User Shares, I see the same .AppleDB directory in two of my 8 shares, but I'm unable to delete them. Because both Shares are using disk2, I think the .AppleDB directory only exists once and on disk2. How do I get rid of the .AppleDB directories? Man, does Apple junk leave a mess behind!
  16. Thanks! I'll try that...just need to look up the commands again, I don't use Telnet much because it scares me and I'm a Windows guy. If I'm on the console, is this the correct command /mnt/disk2# rm -rf TimeMachine/
  17. I had TimeMachine working, but now notice that the backup has been failing. I'm not sure if the latest RC did that or not, so just checking with this group. I had it setup to use a specfiic disk, as advised in a previous thread. I can connect to the TimeMachine share with my imac and the settings all look correct on the unraid page. However, I get an error on my imac saying the disk couldn't be found when the Backup tries to run. I'm using the User Share, set to AFP (TimeMachine) and security is set to Private, with Read/Write for a specific user. I Include only 1 disk, and Exclude all others. Size limit set and there is lots of free space on that drive. Another issue I have is that I was using another disk in the past, but it ran out of space so reconfigured to use a different disk. I'm now unable to delete the old TimeMachine directory on the disk I'm nolonger using. There isn't much in that directory, just a few Apple files and a directory called AppleDB. I've tried connecting to the Disk share and I've tried both SMB and AFP, but I get the error saying I don't have permission to delete those files and that directory. Thanks
  18. I don't recall which thread it was in, but somewhere we were told that we could run the New Permissions button any time there were issues with permissions. We were told that we had to run it after going to one of the RC's. Given it just resets permissions back to what they should be, I wouldn't think it could cause any harm in running it again after the recent RC and after updating SAMBA. In fact we should be able to run as much as you want without harm. Maybe Joe or Tom can confirm that.
  19. this has been a issue. I found that if I add the AFP to the share, then connect with my imac, I'm able to delete the files. I sometimes have to reboot the server and ensure I do not attach to the shares with my Windows pc so the files are not locked. I'm then able to delete the files with my imac. Although using AFP does add a few directories and that leaves some stuff to clean up later after you remove the AFP stuff. Having the mac computer and using AFP helped me work around these SMB permissions issues. It only proves that SMB issues continue to haunt Windows pc clients.
  20. My parity check completed with the following, * Duration: 12 hours, 35 minutes, 18 seconds. Average speed: 66.2 MB/sec See Sig for setup. Given how large my array is, and my parity disk is 3TB, the speeds seem ok to me.
  21. I'm really looking forward to this fix speeding_ant. Will it start reporting the Parity Check status as well as UPS status when the power goes out? Mine used to do this with the old unmenu setup, but now I only get the "unraid OK" emails. I'm running my monthly parity check right now and the only way I know that is by going to the gui. Again, looking forward to the new email notifications.
  22. Thanks Bonienl! However, I guess I'm asking what should be deleted in the /boot/packages/ folder, given I do run the APC and iStat plugins, I assume the plugin files are downloading the other stuff into my packages folder, like Powerdown, zlib, and cxxlibs. Or, those could be left over from my old setup (which my friend helped me setup). Bottom line, is any of that stuff old and can be safely deleted? I think it's a process question - does the APC and iState plugins download and drop files in the /boot/packages/ folder? For example, the Powerdown and zlib and cxxlibs files. I'm worried that these are loading and I don't need them anymore. I don't know what the zlib and cxxlibs files are, so I'm asking if they are a bi-product of the APC or iState plugins. Perhaps this needs to go into a different thread. Thanks again!
  23. Does SF use the /boot/config/email/ folder at all for the email notifications? OR was that left over from my old unmenu email notification stuff? If left over, then I should be able to delete the folder and files within. The files in there are ssmtp_config.conf, ssmtp_revaliases.conf, and unraid_notify.cfg My SF email notification is working fine. Also, while trying to clean things up a bit (see the plugins I'm using in my Sig), I noticed the following in my /boot/packages/ folder (see attached picture) Given I do run the APC and iStat plugins, I assume the plugin files are downloading the other stuff into my packages folder, like Powerdown, zlib, and cxxlibs. Or, those could be left over from my old setup (which my friend helped me setup). Bottom line, is any of that stuff old and can be safely deleted?
