I need to swap one of my hd's and running 4.5.4 with unmenu and all latest patches. Given this is kind of a new version and the recent format issues, I just wanted to ask if there is anything I should look out for or do first. My plan is this,
Run a parity check
power down
swap the drive - replacing a good 1tb drive with a 2tb drive for more space and the 1tb drive is very old.
power up
then? - I assume unraid will auto rebuild with parity, but do I need to do anything or is this all automatic with this version?
last, toss the 1tb drive in the trash....LOL
Thanks!

I reviewed my syslog and found only one line I didn't like after a clean bootup.
Tower kernel: ACPI Warning: Incorrect checksum in table [OEMB] - B9, should be B8 (20090903/tbutils-314)
Any idea what this is? Also, it could have been there before the upgrade and I didn't notice it.
Many BIOSes have somewhat buggy ACPI implementations. If you aren't experiencing any problems with your server, then ignore that syslog entry. Chances are it was there before, you just never noticed it.
Thanks. Just so I can be on the lookout, what kind of ACPI issues or problems might a server have? Things seem to be running fine to me, but I wouldn't know what to look for here. I would expect that if my server was having issues, I would most likely see more entries in the syslog than just this one.
Thanks again

I just upgraded from 4.5.3 TEST to 4.5.4, no issues. I was holding off on installing my new larger parity drive until this fix came out. The upgrade went perfect. I then put my old parity drive in and added it to the array. It cleared it, and then formatted it just fine. All tested pefect and the system seems stable.

Do you have a firewall in place? Perhaps that is what is blocking the connection. One more thing to try:
net lookup smtp.gmail.com
Joe L.
Ok, I typed this line
echo -e "Subject: another test\n\nThis is the email body." | ssmtp -d root
and get no output in Putty. I checked the syslog and it stops at "Creating SSL connection to host"
I have to kill my Putty session because it just hangs there. I can't seem break out. Control C crashed my pc if done within Putty.
For this line,
net lookup smtp.gmail.com
I get 74.125.53.109
seems to work ok.
So why no output and what can we try next? Could be that my ISP is blocking something. I have Comcast...
Again, I had this working with bubbaaraid and that requried a mail and notify package too. Could it me that I have packagees or files from that setup that are conflicting with this new package, unmenu, etc?
I also see this in my syslog and don't know what it is or what is causing it, may not be related to this issue,
May 12 07:09:16 Tower unmenu[1543]: ls: cannot access /boot/custom/etc/rc.d/*: No such file or directory
Thanks again!
When you had this set up in the past, did you use gmail? or your local comcast e-mail. I don't remember if bubbaRaid could handle SSL connections. (I don't think it did)
If you are willing, there is one more way to see exactly what is being accessed, and that is using a debugging utility to trace the files opened and actions taken by ssmtp when it attempts to make a connection. Obviously, it is blocking when attempting to establish a connection.
If interested, send a PM.
Joe L.
I used gmail, same account password and same firewall as I've had for af ew years now. The only thing that changed was running disable bubbaraid and the 4.5.3 TEST upgrade, only the two files, and the unmenu install.
Bubaraid did use ssl and it worked fine. I have a backup of my flash before upgrading and disabling BR.
I really want this to work, so yes, Ill PM.

Either should work, use -d9. BUT MAKE SURE YOU USE ssmtp, not ssmpt. (last two characters transposed)I'm using putty as well... control-D works just fine.
Looks like you disconnected your session.
What did you see on the screen? All the output I showed came to my screen in my telnet session.
Joe L.
First, is it ssmpt -d9 or ssmpt -d99 [email protected] ? You said for to use d9 ,but in your output I see d99?
Did you press enter TWICE after typing the line:control D dosen't do anything, and I don't get that. I'm running Windows7 and Putty .60.
Subject: this is the subject
Make sure there is a space after the colon character ":" but before the subject text.
the final control-D is only needed to close the connection. The connections is established when you press enter a second time after typing the subject line. You've not shown any attempt to connect. All the text I showed came to my screen, not the syslog. I'm using the same version of putty. If you'd like, use the system console to type the commands...
After I type "this is a test of email connec...." I hit enter and then tried to do a control D. Nothing on my screen at all. Just what I typed. I don't get any output response, but I am most likely doing something wrong.
To be sure you are running the same program try:
root@Tower:/# which ssmtp
/usr/sbin/ssmtp
root@Tower:/# ssmtp -?
ssmtp: No recipients supplied - mail will not be sent
root@Tower:/# ssmtp -V
sSMTP 2.60.4 (Not sendmail at all)
for this part,

ssmtp: No recipients supplied - mail will not be sent
root@Tower:/# ssmtp -V
sSMTP 2.60.4 (Not sendmail at all)
I got he same as you, so that part is good.
However, after typing,
ssmtp -d9 [email protected]
Subject: this is a test
hit enter twice, I see nothing on my screen, no output??
I have to put a monitor on my unraid server to do this directly, never thought I'd need a acutal monitor. I'm not sure that will help. I'm worried as to why I would not get any screen output from the first few steps.

The results of the configuration end up inHi Joe, yes I did do that. I selected the C complier on the package list, installed that...following the instructions, then I was able to install the smtp package and configure that. In fact, the smpt package would not install, had a error saying compiler not installed....but after I installed the compiler, smpt installed just fine. Is there a conf file I can paste here that would help?
/usr/local/etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf
once installed.
So take a look at it. Don't post it without editing it to remove your real e-mail and password.
Ok, let's try something on the command line
You will need to end the following set of typed commands with a "Control-D" You will see the debugging output as ssmtp communicates with gmail. We will do this without the "mail" front end, so type as instructed in blue below.
ssmtp -d9 [email protected] <- this sets debug mode for ssmtp
Subject: this is a test <- after this line press enter twice.
this is a test of e-mail connectivity <- this is the body of the email message
Control-D <-this is a single "Control-D" character. It signifies the end of the message.
My session with ssmtp looked like this:
ssmtp -d99 [email protected]
Subject: testing once more <- I pressed enter TWICE after this line

You can see the interactive nature of the ssmtp program with gmail.
If the password or login is wrong, we should see it get rejected.
One question, just came to me. Do you have any spaces or quote marks, or <> symbols in your email or password?
No, email and password do not have any of those.
I'm using Putty and had trouble with the Control D. Pressing CTRL D on my keyboard did nothing. I then tried typing {%CTRL%}D
I had to just kill my session
Here is what I saw in the syslog,
May 10 12:48:20 Tower sSMTP[12148]: Set Root="[email protected]"
May 10 12:48:20 Tower sSMTP[12148]: Set MailHub="smtp.gmail.com"

May 10 12:48:29 Tower sSMTP[12148]: Creating SSL connection to host
May 10 12:49:53 Tower sSMTP[11672]: Connection lost in middle of processing
because I wasn't able to complete the instruction with the control D, I'm not sure what this means, but the entry in the syslog isn't good.
We are reaching the limits of my abilities, but I'll keep trying. Thanks for all of your help.
What next?

To be certain, reboot. Request re-install on reboot for the compiler.Joe,
I was not able to do this one,
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp-2.61/*
I get a cannot remove error, .../mdSauth': Is a directory
For this one,
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp.conf
no such file exists...error
All of the others worked just fine. I wanted to check with you because of the two I got errors on...
Now when I go to the Package Manager, I see that mail ssmtp is not installed, good. However, it still shows the C complier as installed
I want to know if we should continue to try to uninstall the compiler, or (being the compiler already shows as installed) should I just try to install the mail/ssmpt package?
Thanks
Ok, set the complier to reinstall on reboot, and rebooted. I then went to package manager and selected the ssmtp package again, it downloaded and installed. This time my information was already there, didn't have to configure anything. I thought that part was weird being I thought we deleted all of that stuff.
Hit the Send Test email and still no luck, browser just hangs and says waiting for server to send......bla..bla....
during this phase, unmenu is hung, meaning if I click to go the the Main page, I get a link is broken error from IE. I have to wait for it to fail and then I can get back in to unmenu.
here is the info from ssmtp.conf

Once ssmtp is compiled, it does not need to do it again, so it skips that step.

Just to be clear, this is what I did after installing unmenu.
-Went to the package manager and clicked on the C complier button. I then clicked on the download button, and finally the Install button.
-I then went back to package manager and clicked on the mail and ssmtp button, then the download button, and finally the install button. I had to put my information in then as well, email address, etc.. That's it. Thanks Joe!
Help Joe! This is driving me crazy, been trying to get this to work all day. arg!
Let's type a few commands that will guarantee it is all re-compiled as expected.
to remove the existing install of ssmtp, type:
rm /usr/sbin/ssmtp
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp-2.61/ssmtp
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp_2.61.orig.tar.gz
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp-2.61/*
rm /usr/bin/sendmail
rm /usr/local/etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp.conf
rm /boot/packages/openssl-0.9.8i-i486-1.tgz
rm /boot/packages/mailx-12.3-i486-1.tgz
rm /usr/bin/mail
rm /bin/mail
Then, you should be able to start from the beginning
Install the compiler, then edit the config variables in ssmtp, then install it.
I was not able to do this one,
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp-2.61/*
I get a cannot remove error, .../mdSauth': Is a directory
For this one,
rm /boot/packages/ssmtp.conf
no such file exists...error
All of the others worked just fine. Should I proceed with the next step to install everything again? I wanted to check with you because of the two I got errors on...
Now when I go to the Package Manager, I see that mail ssmtp is not installed, good. However, it still shows the C complier as installed, and will reload at startup.
Thanks again!

Is there a posting somewhere that describes the "packages" available with unMENU?
I'm currently using BubbaRaid and use:
apcupsd
uNotify
lighttpd
I was thinking of waiting until 5.0 came out with the updated web interface, but it does not appear to be coming soon.
thanks,
dave
All of those are included with unmenu via package manager.

If you were still using the old version of unMENU, you probably did not configure mail as you thought you did.
Did you COMPILE and INSTALL ssmtp? (unless you compiled it yourself, through the package manager, it cannot handle gmail and ssl, it can only handle un-encrypted mail)
If you did not download and install the compiler, you did not install an ssmtp that can handle SSL transactions to gmail, as it must be compiled on YOUR server. (I could not find a pre-compiled version with that capability enabled)
Joe L.

The package you want iswith regard to email notification. It states that there must be mail configured. How does one do that. I am not sure what package I need to install to get mail configured. I don't want to install the older unraid_notify but that does seem to configure a mail system as part of its installation
mail and ssmtp - Configure unRAID to be able to send e-mail notifications via the "mail" command. It needs to be compiled... So...
You'll also need to install the "C" compiler. Don't worry, clicking on the buttons on the package manager will do everything for you, you don't have to learn "C" Click the download button, then the "Install" button.
It is because I was unable to find a version of ssmtp with the encryption library compiled in. It caused me a bit more hair loss, as I tried valiantly to connect to gmail with the compiled version I did find.
It was one of the incentives I had to get the package manager to where it is today.
So... First install the "C" compiler, you do not need to set ti to re-install on re-boot.
Then install "mail and ssmtp" after configuring its editable fields. Set it to re-install on re-boot
Then, install the e-mail alerts. Set it to re-install on re-boot.
All in all, it will take you longer to edit the few configuration fields than any of the other steps.
Before you start, use the "Check for Updates" button on the user-scripts page, as lots of tiny fixes and improvements have been made in the past days based on feedback and suggestions.
Joe L.
Hi Joe,
I followed these instructions, yet something is wrong. I had the notify email stuff working before I upgraded to 4.5.3 and unmenu 1.3, so I have the correct information, server, etc. However, when I hit the TEST Email button, the browser hangs.
I tried hitting the Check for unmenu updates button, but that didn't seem to do anything.
here is the syslog error
8 15:16:56 Tower unmenu[1543]: awk: ./unmenu.awk:597: fatal: print to "/inet/tcp/8080/0/0" failed (Connection reset by peer)

May 8 15:13:23 Tower sSMTP[5872]: Invalid response SMTP Server (STARTTLS)
May 8 15:13:23 Tower sSMTP[5872]: Cannot open smtp.gmail.com:465
I'm using gmail and ssl. Did I miss something here?
thanks

OMG ,this was too easy! I followed the instructions and I'm now running 4.5.3 TEST. Even unmenu install was a joke. I'm a newbie and this was easy.
I'm off to use the unmenu Package manger to add the ups and email stuff.
For the other newbies, all I did was this....
-ran Check Parity yesterday...just to make sure everything was cool.
-shutdown my server
-removed the flash and put it in my Win7pc.
-ran disable Bubba..bat file
-copied the two main files, bzimage and bzroot to the root of my flash drive
-created a dir at the root of my flash drive called /unmenu
-unzipped the unmenu file and copied it to that dir above.
-put the flash back in my server and booted up.
Confirmed that I'm now on 4.5.3 TEST
using Putty, connected to my server and ran the unmenu install command Then just edit the Gofile so unmenu starts on reboots, all done.
Again, wow this was cool
Thanks for all of the help guys!
-
Thanks Joe! Yup, that is the same link I posted, in my other reply. I found it and again, it looks easy.
I'll have to ask my friend who helped me. Maybe I can get him to post here. I remember him installing several packages and doing a bunch of config work, but I don't know the details.
What I see is emails and apc stuff workiing, but nothing else special. So, I think unmenu can easily replace bubbaraid for me.
Can't wait to try it!
-
I've looked at the instructions for installing 4.5.3 as well, for a new flash drive and setup. However, I'm a little worried about doing the actual upgrade...

OMG, replace two files and that's it! Can't wait to try it. Thanks!

I found the unmenu thread started by Joe here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5568.0
Looks easy, although I didn't read all the thread pages, too many. I downloaded it and the instructions, again looks easy.
I've looked at the instructions for installing 4.5.3 as well, for a new flash drive and setup. However, I'm a little worried about doing the actual upgrade. I have 4.4.2 with bubbaraid and of course have user accounts and user shares all setup.
Is it really that easy that I install the new version on a new flash, power down my existing setup, install the new flash drive, and boot up? Do I have to recreate all of my shares and users?
I didn't see (although most likely on this forum somewhere) detailed instructions for migrating/upgrading, only new setups. Can somebody point me to a thread or provide instructions for me?
I'd still like to know if online spare drive is supported in the new version as well.
Thanks!
-
You can easily get all that stuff working with the unmenu addon....
Easy for who? LOL Llike I said, I'm not that good at this stuff and I had a friend help me with the bubbaraid stuff. Is the new unraid menu all webgui now for this stuff, or would I still have to install addons, packages, and configure with command line?
BTW, I don't see a unmenu addon, where is that on the download page?

holly crap batman! I'm still running 4.4.2 with bubbaraid 1.17 and have no issues. I was just thinking it was time to upgrade to the final release of 4.5.3, until I read this.
If I were to do any upgrade, I would go with this test (format disabled) release, although not final and meant for general public??
I also don't really want to loose the nice features of bubbaraid. All of my apcups stuff and notify are working great, and there is no bubbaraid upgrade yet. I'm not good with the command line stuff, so having webgui is awesome!
Recommendations at this point?
Oh, can anyone tell me if 4.5.3 supports having a online spare drive? I hate to waste a drive as a online spare, but I'm starting to get Smart errors for 4 of my drives, saying POWER ON Threshold exceeded. Being with Parity, I can only loose one disk at a time, I thought having a hot spare would lower risk of loosing data.
first hard drive swap with 4.5.4 any suggestions?

Thanks Joe!
Yup, installed a 2tb parity drive a while back so I'm good there. Thanks for the suggestion on running the preclear. I will either do that, or just save the old 1tb drive for a week or two, as it is still working and it will still have my data on it.
I do have another question for you. I have 4 of these 1tb drives, all about 4 years old. I got these when they first came out. Being they have been in a NAS and now my unraid server, they have been powered on all the time. The result is I'm now getting Smart alerts on all 4 drives that says
GTG000PAG051KC: WARNING - Power_On_Hours it is now 21892 (warning threshold is 20000)
So I'm proactively swapping them out one at a time, mainly due to lack of funds. My question is which one should be swapped first, then second, and so on. In looking at the other Smart data, I can't really tell which drive should go first. I do notice that when the system is doing a Parity Check, some of the drives really get hot, but that is the only time they do so I've not worried about it too much. Can you please take a look at this data and let me know if you see any red flags, and then specifically the 4 Hitachi 1tb drives, what order would you swap them out?
Here is my SMART data, hope it's ok to post all of this stuff here...
