Still waiting for the power supply bracket, but received the extra short 15cm SATA cables, the SFF-8654 to 8x SATA breakout cable from Aliexpress and the WD Black SN850X 8TB NVMe: Cabling: But: The machine does not boot anymore. Removed the NVMe. Boots... 😒 As I knew that mainboards with the C246 chipset had problems booting with a Seagate Ironwolf NVMe in the past, I tried to update the BIOS from F1 to F4: But sadly: Still black screen. I tested a Samsung Evo Plus 2TB and WD Black SN750 1TB without problems. So the slot is working properly. Last chance: I opened a support ticket via the Gigabyte eSupport. I hope they have a Custom BIOS which covers this problem. 🙏
  3. Ok, didn't came back by now. Nice. Installed and works. This DC-DC converter delivers now the 5V power for the top rack, which means 8 SSDs, each up to 6.25 watts: Regarding my measurement it does not have any impact on idle power consumption, which is even nicer. The next step was a little bit risky because I already drilled the hole and installed the 80 mm fan: It's risky because at the moment I'm not able to close the lid anymore as the new power supply mounting bracket is still on its way. So I hope it will turn out as planned 😬 With the lid closed, in theory, the fan's position should be here: Used for this mod: - NF-A8 PWM chromax.black.swap 80 mm fan - Euroharry hex fan grille 80mm (I only needed the grille, the plate went to the trash ^^) And last but not least I installed all SSDs I found: If the Bifurcation card fits, I could finally add the 2.5G card and two 8TB NVMe SSDs to get a Dual Parity Protection. P.S. This are my File Integrity settings: As you can see I do weekly checks and every SSD has its own task, which means a single SSD needs 14 weeks to get rechecked. Maybe I will change this to two SSDs per week 🤔

  6. I received the first SFF-8654 to 8x SATA cable (the expensive one from Areca).   7. I'm very proud to present you the idea of converting 12V to 5V: 5V and 12V is working: Plugged in the 8-bay rack and .... the stepdown converter switches off. Not sure why. I even tried to disconnect 3.3V and 12V. And I tried to avoid any ground connection by removing the rack from the case, but still not luck. Maybe the stepdown converter produces to much ripple noise?! I now ordered two much more expensive and bigger DC-DC converters: Bauer Electronics DC-DC 8V-36V to 5V 10A/50W https://amzn.to/3Tw0y2i I think, this is only a cheap chinese part with a German sticker, but I give it a try. Mean Well RSD-60G-5 9V-36V to 5V 12A/60W https://amzn.to/3zhV0S8 If this doesn't work, nothing will work.

  9. Kann denke ich nur am Stick oder UEFI/BIOS Boot liegen. Wenn zb nur UEFI unterstützt wird, darf der EFI Ordner keinen Unterstrich enthalten. Wird aber auch bei der Installation des Sticks abgefragt. Was hat das BIOS hier alles für Einstellungen? Geht nur UEFI oder auch CSM?

  11. As I installed the File Integrity Plugin I was able to check the temps while files were hashed. After around 2 hours: So I never received a warning. My warning temp is 65 °C: This, because the maximum allowed temperature of a Samsung QVO is 70 °C: So for 8 SATA SSDs a single 120mm fan seems to be sufficient. But lower temperatures are always better. Maybe I'm able to lower the position of the ATX power supply, so it would be possible to install a second 120mm in the top 🤷‍♂️

  13. 3D Druck ist natürlich immer eine Option, allerdings habe ich noch keinen guten gedruckten Halter gesehen. Bei dem aus dem Video / Screenshot muss zb jede SSD geschraubt werden und der Airflow ist eine Katastrophe, weil nicht vorhanden. Und stell dir mal vor eine SSD geht kaputt. Erstes Problem: Wie findest du heraus welche kaputt ist. Es gibt keine LEDs. Könnte man mit Aufklebern lösen. Zweites Problem: Wie kommst du an die Schrauben? Ich habe so eine Mini Ratsche, damit würde es irgendwie gehen. Aber komfortabel ist anders. Ich halte hier Rändelschrauben für Pflicht, aber bei der engen Montage könnte auch das ein Problem werden (Finger zu dick). Müsste man testen. Drittes Problem: Wie willst du die Kabel ziehen ohne weitere SSDs auszustecken? Ziehst du eine zu viel raus, hast du wegen nur 1 Parität im Array oder einem RAID5 deine Daten zerlegt oder der Server stürzt ab. Meiner Ansicht nach ist die einzig sinnvolle gedruckte Variante ein Stecksystem, was ich in einem anderen Thread mal angefangen, aber wieder verworfen hatte: War noch eine frühe Phase. Die Idee war es einen SATA Kombo Stecker einzuführen, so dass man auf eine Backplane verzichten kann und die SSD mit Führungsmulden exakt auf diesen Stecker drücken kann. Aber auch wenn du dann einen guten gedruckten Halter gefunden hast: Welches Case bietet Platz für 24 SSDs?
  14. Today I received the Noctua NH-L9i, so I decided to assemble as much as possible. At first I started by drilling some holes and cutting the ssd bracket to allow a better air flow for the power supply: This result was promising, but ... stay tuned 😅 The next step was to install the mainboard with its components: - Gigabyte C246N-WU2 mainboard - Intel Xeon E-2126G (6 Core, no Hyper Threading) CPU - Samsung 2666 MHz 64GB ECC DDR4 RAM - Noctua NH-L9i chromax black CPU cooler - Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM chromax black 120mm case fan - CableDeconn Mini SAS (SFF-8643) to 4x SATA Closed the ventilation holes of the case lid. My targets: - the fresh air should only flow through the SSD racks - no need for extra SSD rack fans (as you can see in the last picture I already removed them) At this step of the project I thought I could even add an x8x4x4 Bifurcation adapter to add the 2.5G card, but ... ... Houston we have a problem 🤪 So I removed the bifurcation adapter and ... this is not tight fit... its bend to fit 🙈 But hey, it works 😅 To solve this I plan to remove most of the ssd bracket and install two square tubes vertically: 8 SATA SSDs are already working 😁 Power consumption in idle: 16.8 watts No joke. It is a little bit less than with the M920q frankenstein thing, while including the 9500-16i... but to be fair, without a 2.5G card. I'm already exited how much it finally consumes. Regarding the temps: Looks promising in idle after some hours: After I received my 8TB M.2 SSD I will post the results while the parity is created.
  15. Das ist aus deinem verlinkten Post. Wie gesagt sind das alles SFF-TA-1016 Stecker. Die Kabel sind also alle falsch beschriftet. Das hier wäre zb ein günstiges mit dem korrekten SFF-8654 Stecker: https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005005510476397.html Der Verkäufer der 9500-16i wollte mir sogar drei verschiedene Varianten davon mit verkaufen, aber leider alle mit Winkelsteckern. Bei ihm haben die funktioniert und mit Winkel gibt es die ja nur aus China. Daher bin ich eigentlich guter Dinge, dass das Kabel funktioniert. Man findet leider nichts dazu, aber ich vermute dass das nicht für SATA breakout relevant ist, denn nur die PCIe tauglichen Kabel von areca haben den Hinweis: >pinouts that follow the SFF-9402 specification Findet man hier unten bei cable matrix, wenn man die einzelnen Artikelnummern anklickt: https://www.areca.com.tw/products/trimode-1886.html Bei dem SATA Kabel gibt es den Satz nicht: "traditional" klingt nach abwärtskompatibel.

Next power measurement is regarding an ExpressCage MB038SP-B with two SSDs, which I connected to the onboard sata ports: In this scenario we reach C10 and the power consumption raised from 5.8 watts to 8 watts After disconnecting both mini fans it dropped to 6.9 watts. Maybe I won't use them at all. I will decide this in a later stage of the project. But if they are needed, I will replace them against Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX for sure as they are much quieter.
  17. I installed the Broadcom 9500-16i and the power consumption (with the RM550x power supply) raised from 5.8 to 11.6 watts while reaching C7, which is nice. Sadly I'm not able to connect any SSDs to the HBA card as many of the Aliexpress sellers are using "SFF-8654" in their descriptions although the cables are equipped with SFF-TA-1016 connectors and I received such a wrong labeled cable 😠 It's really crazy how many wrong listings exist: SFF-8654 spec: https://members.snia.org/document/dl/26744 SFF-TA-1016 spec: https://members.snia.org/document/dl/33768 This means I need to wait additional 2 weeks and now I try to get my money back 😒

Das bekanntlich sehr effiziente RM550x (2021) war schnell ausverkauft und da Corsair gerne Geld verdienen möchte und die Interessen ihrer Kunden versteht, legen sie die RMx Serie für das Jahr 2024 neu auf und... Oh keine 550W... Keine 650W... Beginnt erst bei 750W mit dem RM750x und das hat scheinbar 1 bis 2 Watt mehr Verlust als das RM550x (2021).... Da aus dem internationalen Bereich die Bitte kam, habe ich dort meinen Build-Thread platziert: Wer sich auf Deutsch unterhalten möchte, kann das gerne hier machen 😉 EDIT: Heute wurde das Gigabyte C246N-WU2 geliefert und ich habe direkt den Stromverbrauch der beiden Netzteile gemessen: 5.8W Corsair RM550x (2021) 10.5W FSP FlexGuru 500W Damit ist also klar, dass ich das ATX Netzteil irgendwie reinquetschen muss.

It has a very good build quality, but I don't understand why they install heavy painted 5.25 steel covers as they are thrown in the trash 🤔 In addition they still don't provide USB3, not talking about the missing USB-C 🙈 Moreover I'm missing to install a 120mm fan on the top (this would allow to produce more vacuum pressure, which would maybe allow to remove the tiny fans from the SSD cages). I started the project by installing the three Icy Dock MB038SP-B 8-Bay Cages: Then I tried to find a position for an ATX power supply: Horizontal positioning - this will cause problems with the SATA connectors - could be maybe solved, if the top row of fans are removed and 90 degree sata connectors are used partially covers the 120mm fan - could be solved if the 120mm is placed outside of the case and the power supply moved to the left - or we use a flat 120mm fan like the Noctua NF-A12x15, but it could be to weak for this project 🤔 - needs drilling holes in the top of the lid, so the hot air of the power supply can leave the case or we need to rotate the power supply so the fan is blowing against the cpu cooler - the power supply does not get cold air from outside of the case - leaves plenty of room for a cpu cooler Vertical positioning - we only have ~65 mm space for a cpu cooler (73mm total - 6mm standoffs - 2mm mainboard) - my planned cpu cooler Noctua NH-L12S does not fit (needs 70 mm clearance) - the Noctua NH-L9i needs only 37 mm clearance and should be a ok (I use the Xeon E-2126G 80W TDP, which seems to be in the allowed range) - leaves plenty of room between the sata connectors and the power supply - allows installing a 25mm thick 120mm fan - the power supply blows its hot air hot onto the 120mm fan (should be ok) - the power supply does not get cold air from outside of the case (drilling holes in the side of the lid could cause problems with the general air flow of the case) - the ventilation holes are partially covered by the internal SSD bracket (which can't be removed, but maybe we could cut some holes into it) But at first I will measure the FSP FlexGURU PRO 500W power supply and compare it with the Corsair RM550x (2021) regarding its low load efficiency. Maybe I don't need this mod at all 🤷‍♂️

I think the main issues nowadays are additional chips/controllers on the board like ASM media Chipsets for USB 3.1, Realtek 2.5G etc I'd say buy a little bit bigger version to be more flexible for some additional HDDs in the future?! ITX....meh. that's my recent investment as there is such a limited amount of good ITX boards: Compared to the measurements of the last months I would try a Gigabyte ITX board: https://geizhals.de/?cat=mbp4_1700&xf=4400_Mini-ITX~544_GIGABYTE&sort=r&hloc=at&hloc=de&v=e&pg=1 Maybe the GIGABYTE B760I AORUS Pro DDR4 as it has 2.5G from Intel and 4 SATA ports?!   25. Which is correct. A domain is nothing else as an easy reminder for an IP address. So if IP:port works, you can use domain:port if the domain has a DNS entry returning the correct IP address. If you don't like to add a port to a domain name you need to change the IP of the domain so it points to a reverse proxy like npm. In NPM itself you need a rule which points to itself. This is how I solved it: And my domain "npm.gutt.it" returns the IP address which points to NPM. Side note: As you are trying to add a DNS entry by using Adguard. Did you verify it is working? So "ping your-npm-domain" on your client should return this IP address. If it is returning the IP address, but failing to reach the target, you maybe have a router which does not support "NAT loopback" or it disallows DNS resolution to local IPs called "DNS rebind protection"?! Additional note: If you use Adguard as your DNS server in your router, you need to add a public DNS IP to unraid or everytime adguard isn't running (for example server reboot), Unraid is not able to reach domains.
