any chance you can integrate the other 2 forks (chaingreen, and spare) into the container as well? that would be sweet! my plan at this point is, to have the container be the farm, and have it mostly talk to just a couple of harvesters i'm going to set up. any docs/how-to's on how to tell the container about havesters?

sorta spoke too soon. put the cover back on the machine, and now the fans spin up a bit more, and it's drawing ~1A. still, not bad. think I'm buying another one.

got the NR12000 setup. E3-1230v2, 8GB ram. with 1x 2.5" HDD (boot, apps) and 12x 4TB Seagate ST4000NC000 drives, I'm drawing 0.85A. I think I'm buying another, as this is CRUSHING the post cost of MD1000.

NR12000 arrived today. testing it with another machine's HDD to see what is what with it. they didn't ship any HDD screws though, and the locking tray setup takes screws I don't recognize.

considering I haven't even figured out *how* to cash out, i'm planning on holding for quite a while.

noticing the other 3 plotters (chaingreen, spare, flax) don't seem to be passing as many plots as chia. note that all plots were farmed on chia. and they seem to be drawing more CPU cycles than chia, especially chaingreen and spare. also still no other rewards, other than me "winning" for chia block 474710.

heh... seeing the 100TB 0XCH posts...

so at some various point in the not too distant future, my last 4TB drive currently attached will be filled. that'll be 15x36 (540) plots completed. once that happens, I'm going to leave the 3 harvesters running, until the local temp storage drives have filled (18x3=54 plots), and the plotters have got their 1 and done can't move because the local temp is full (20 more plots), or just a bit over 2 more 4TB disks. after that, I'll work out what to do with everything. the NR12000 takes 12 disks, while I wanted to take the MD1000 offline since I'm pretty sure it's a power whore, I'll be tempted to keep it active, as that'll be 27 disks, 108TB, or 972 K32 plots. also contemplating if I want to jump into the deep end of the pool with linux, and figure out how to potentially use that mergerfs to stop having so much wasted space

that last part, was why I started buying 4TB drives in bulk, for prices of < $10/TB. I use them to make a backup of my large storage array that unRAID manages, then duplicate the backup disks themselves. it would be nicer to have matching 10TB disks to what's in my unRAID array, but I'm looking for cheap and dirty for cold storage.

good news: chaingreen is synced finally! meh news: still a member of the 0-coin club. bad news: 2 of my plotters apparently decided "hey, let's update!" even though I told them NOT TO. So i'm behind in finishing these drives. if it's not one thing...

there might be more wasted space, but the platter diameter increase will more than make up for that in terms of increased surface area. if you consider just the total surface area of the 3 circles, 2.5", 3.5" and 5.25", you'll find the latter is 2.5x the middle, and nearly 5x the first. that's excluding the losses incurred by the spindle itself, which will hurt the smaller drives more I suspect. in the worst case, just going to 5.25" should be able to get you a 50TB disk, in common 1" format. that also doesn't take into account the 60% increase in drive height you can do with a true HH 5.25" format. if we take a rough guess of 50% increase in platter count, now you're at 75TB at least, and that's with throwing a away any optimizations that would/could be done by the format change. I think 100TB in 5.25" HH is on the low side. If throughput were an actual problem, I'd say go true dual actuator sets; inner half and outer half, and have the drive report as 2 separate devices. you can tune what and where data is archived on the drives. otherwise we just go back to the good/bad old days of partition splitting a drive.

I'd personally, spin up everything I could that I have here, that's not in use for anything, but only if I can do so without a butt ton of power consumption. This is the moment I wish manufacturers had listened to a want I've had for years: monstrous capacity, moderate speed, low power consumption. gimme a 5.25" Full Height drive, running at 3600rpm, and 100TB of capacity, for like $500. it only has to be fast enough to handle roughly 1.5 4K streams I'd say, and I don't care if it take 10-15 seconds for it to spin fully up (that'll help keep the power use down, with a lower strength motor.) if you did that whole thing seagate is doing with multiple actuators, that should handle access times nicely.

so about that $200 price point... still haven't found an exchange that'll take my money.

bigger problem is finding an appropriate backplane. most of the ones i'm seeing are passive, so I'll need more adapter cards to hook them up. I'd rather find an expander backplane. HighPoint EJ340 presents an interesting idea, but i'm still working up the $/drive-connected price.
