  1. Hi 1812, Making a VM of "unmounted" disks would be a little silly, or not? Why have unmounted discs? Would that interfere in any aspect or option of unRaid? Or will i just see a 80Tb disc (array of 10x 8Tb)? The price of the license is not in the factor, i was ready for the 12+ drives one. The part "care" i'm not really sure of that meaning. Do you mean that a single drive is also a "don't care", is the file system, or what. Tryying a different file system, ext4, zfs, brfs or things like those as i read would hel that? Also trying another softawe option with less extensions but more oriented to what i need could be a possibiliity? Thanks for the responses. Sorry if some of my questions seem dumb, i had a lot of reading and watching tutorials for unraid and other options for my needs and maybe i am a bit confused.
  2. Hi everyone, i just wanted to share my thoughts after a month of test in 2 diferent servers (foxxcon 1U 4HDD SFP+ dual xeon, and Supermicro 2U 12HDD +6sata, dual xeon, dual SFP+, etc)... And the thing is... I like a lot the system, the addons, Docker, Pluguins and so... I like the interface, the easy configuration and the Dashboard. But I lack performance. And i don't call it in a bad way, i mean, i don't feel cheatend in any form because the name itselfs says it UnRaid... But i come from a Raid_0 2HHD Synology, amd my idea was to try some sort of 8 or 10 HDDs Raid 0... And i know it's not the purpose of unRaid. And here i am, thinking if i shoud buy a license or not, if i should try som sort of another soft that let me create Raid 0s, if i should forget about parity at all, make a RAID 0 from the raid adaptor and just let unRaid "see" 1 big disk... and so. If anyone can give me some light on these thoughts will be apppreciated. Thanks p.s. Just to clarify: - yes, at some point i need to transfer tons of GB from 2 workstations that have 10Gb each one to this "unit". (it's a job i do once a year, and i mean transferrin 7x 60Gb files every 3 hours during 5 days) - yes, i know that raid 0 is not a backup, and i have a cloud external backup with no size limit
  3. I don't really know "why". It was an option since the server is refurbished and seemed the better option to me since it was 50& more that the other listed. And works fine also.
  4. Hi there, i just build a Microstar 12 bay server and everything is fairly good working but i'm having issues with ehternet. The mainboard have 4 ethernet ports eth0 to eth3, and 2 SPF+ from a NIC, well recognized and so... The thing is that the array can't be started since it says no internet connection, but the eth0 (that is the one that has the DNS to configure seems ok). Actually it worked some moment, but i had to shutdown the server to add some discs and lost it, lost the bonding of the 2 SPF+ also... Actually i sovled it by just tinkering on options. SOLUTION: - There is an option on the SPF+ eth4 that is bridging that was the one in conflict with eth0, just put OFF there and the internet connection was alright. Any hint or idea on that? I am planning to buy a licence, but that is the final step on setting everything up and working, and of course "i" need internet too on it. Thanks, Carles
  5. Will this server with 2x Adaptec 71605 SAS/SATA 6Gb/s PCIe Gen3 RAID Kit work fine with unRaid? I'm about to build a file storage server with 12x HDD Drives and just want to be sure. YES it does work. Thanks, Carles
  6. Hi everyone, since everytime i ask or read something, i learn more but got more doubts, and seems that i have a nice Foxconn 1U but unusable with HDDs greater that 2TB... I am thinking on try to reuse the CPUs ans RAM on a thingy like SuperMicro CSE-829U X10DRU-i+ (2U) 12x 3.5" (LFF)... Would that fit out of the box? Seems it uses Xeon processos, that seems a positive, seems that uses PC4 RAM ECC memory and i have PC3 RAM ECC (would that be an issue?)... If i had to use the CPUs and RAM proposed would be a drawback in budget aspects, but if they work no probems at all, since im tryiying to "emulate" a 12 Drive Synology NAS with a 10Gb NIC... (and it's priced more that 4 times that...) I'll use a dual SFP+ card and the raid card proposed also. I put the link just to info purposes, if it not allowed please remove it: https://www.bargainhardware.co.uk/superm-cse-829u-x10dru-i-2u-4-lff-hs-sas-hsp-configure-to-order One question i also have is would it take 8TB drives? They offer up to 6TB, but i assume that is for the "second hand" issues more that for its capacity. If i started there with 5x Drives (1 parity and 4 Storage) would be nice and seamless to keep adding drives up to 12? Also, if in some future i use a Netapp or similar 24x drive cage could i expand it with the 3 PCI Expansion slots (and HBA card o whatever i need there)? Thanks for the responses in advance, Carles
  7. Thanks for the great explanation. So now, i am in the middle of not booting and not recognzing since it boots a "bit" until i see a dialog where it tells me to press DEL or F2 to bios menu, or F7 to boot options, but it gets frozen/stuck after pressing a key, as i explained before. The issue with no HDDs "bigger than" 2,something TBs seems the most plausible. The BIOS update seems an issue since the servers are already second hand and from "long" time ago, i can't find any useful info on that. I'm searching an alternative just to keep with the CPUs and RAMs and so. Again thanks for taking time to look on it. Carles
  8. Hey there, thanks for the responses. Yes there are NO possibility of PCI slot... (they are not onboard) Yes it "seems", as far as i can remember because i read a lot of things, that there is a 2 TB, or near there, limitation for HDDs... (i have to test that, i don't have any 2 TB disk, can you imagine this?? only smaller or the 8 TB one that i bought to test it)... So i'm in a dead end, seems. Because i want to upgrade to more that 8 TB that i already have in the Synology, but 4 or 6 x2TB would be a so low improvement... I'll continue searching anyway, but i think i'm fowarded to build a PC to accomodate the HDDs and so... That is true, end excuse my english, but the thing is that it cannot recognize it because it doesn't boot at all. I don't know if it makes sense what i mean. Thanks everyone for dropping ideas!
  9. This is what i'm trying to figure out Im looking for some 2, 3 and 4 TB "spare" drives just to test if they boot with this machine. Thanks!
  10. I must be explaining me too long and very badly: I ALREADY booted (from USB, tested and liked a lot unRaid in this server. (with the 300GB HDD that i have whne i got it) What i cannot archieve is to get a 8TB HDD recognised and pass from the first boot screen if i plug it in. For the internet access and those Dockers (i don't know anything from them) i'll get it a look. Thanks a lot!
  11. Thanks, i tried that yesterday twice and jsut now to confirm. The BIOS don't pass to the boot option, it gets stuck on the menu, but neither F7 or DEL does anything far there. I unplugged the 8TB HDD and goes as always to the USB stick normally as in my tests did. I must be something regarding the "sata" "raid or just the huge "non supported" HDD Keep in mind that the 300 Gb disc is present and always worked. Thanks again!
  12. Hi everyone around. I've tried to explain it a bit on my introduction, but i wanted to be more specific on the "needs" and what i want to "archieve" with it. I bought a Foxconn 1U Cloud Server 4x LFF (3.5") with 2x 8 Cores Xeons (16 cores 32 Threads in total), 64Gb of RAM 1333mhz ECC, a 300Gb 10.000 rpm SAS disk just for test purposes, and with the SFP+ 10G included, time ago and used it to test for VMs with SPhere and so... This went fairly well and the server kep unused for some time. With Unraid I dowloaded the trial and i wanted to do some tests before dropping inside some 8 or 10 TB drives. All of the small needs i tried (Shares, maybe a linux VM, 10G connecticity, etc) went so fine with all my tests with 1 disc, my plan "was" to make a plain file server/nas. My "intentions": - have a 20+ TB NAS/file server for home - 10Gb lan speed - maybe some VMs but not for any special reason - Possibility of accessing the files from "outside" LAN aka Internet www - Option to expand... Now i can fit 4x XX TB drives and later on +2 more I come from a 8Tb Synology 412+ (two bays, 1Gb Lan) and it's getting tight... What i like most of the Synology is the OS and the easy to access it from "outside": theyr quickconnect.to/what-ever is magic and saved me a tons of times being out home and needing some file i had there. I hope unRaid have some sort of pliguin or easy app to configure this, but this is secondary. My surprise came when i threw a 8TB disc to test it, my plan was to put in there 4 or 6 like those, and its NOT even booting. Gets stuck at "Press DEL F2 for setup. Press F8 for Bootloader..." but don't gets any further past there (gets freezed as if i click either F2, DEL or F8 Caps/lock don't change any more...). Actually the motherboard has 6x SATA connector but they only populate 4 of them because there are only 4 HDD shelves to put in there (i'd have to invent some way to put the other 2, but that is also scondary, 4 HDD drives would be nice. The info on Bios update for that MB is so vague. The server came from bargain hardware uk in a quite good condition and with 1 year warranty. I'm a bit confused on how to get on: - Should I random "try" 7, 6, 5, 4, 3... TB HDDs to see with ones does boot? (actually don't have that sizes available...) - Should i forget the idea to make any NAS there and get a new mobo, etc, sata cards and do a thing with expansion in mind with a shelf of 24x Netapp for example? - Should I keep on tryiying hard because that is the way we learn? Any suggestion or/desist idea is very welcome since i cannot find any useful info around. Also, if some one finds help in this or other forums is greatly appreciated, but i've been necroind post everywhere or they are so away from my intentions or they are so lost as i am. Thanks in advance again. Carles
  13. Hi everyone, i've been looking, reading and trying myself unraid lately. I bought a Foxconn 1U Cloud Server 4x LFF (3.5") time ago and used it to test for VMs with SPhere and so... I put 2x 8 Cores Xeons, 64Gb of RAM, a 300Gb 10.000 rpm SAS disk, and with the SFP+ 10G works like a charm. With Unraid it's working fine with all my tests with 1 disc, my plan "was" to make a plain file server/nas. I come from a 8Tb Synology 412+ (two bays, 1Gb Lan) and it's getting tight...
