  1. I am going to be expanding my array starting with a replacement of my parity drive and swapping out a few drives along the way. I am running 6.3.5 RFS. I have a 21TB array made up of 3- 3GB drives, 6-2GB drives, 500MB cache. My plan was to bump the parity to a 4GB, replace a couple of the older 2GB with 4GBs, move one of the 2GB's as a cache drive. My question to the experts: Is it worth going through the trouble to convert to the XFS file system? If so, is this the time to do it? I look for thoughts from the community. Thanks,
  2. I think I have a controller problem. Switched location, same controller - no luck; moved to another controller - success. Have new controller on order (replacing Marvel controller with an LSI). Not sure why the updated version is more "sensitive" as everything was working prior to the upgrade.
  3. Diagnostics attached hal_9000-diagnostics-20170826-1149.zip
  4. I am still looking for assistance as to why my cache drive is not recognized. The device is physically present as can be seen by the device listing below. Am I missing something when I did the upgrade from 5.0.5->6.3.5 Please advise. ----------------------------- root@HAL_9000:/dev/disk/by-id# ls -l total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:39 ata-ST2000DL001-9VT156_5YD2ZP9B -> ../../sdl lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:39 ata-ST2000DL001-9VT156_5YD2ZP9B-part1 -> ../../sdl1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DL001-9VT156_5YD6CTMD -> ../../sde lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DL001-9VT156_5YD6CTMD-part1 -> ../../sde1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DL001-9VT156_5YD6FSNN -> ../../sdf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DL001-9VT156_5YD6FSNN-part1 -> ../../sdf1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DL003-9VT166_6YD0H04A -> ../../sdd lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DL003-9VT166_6YD0H04A-part1 -> ../../sdd1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DM001-9YN164_W2F02JC5 -> ../../sdg lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 ata-ST2000DM001-9YN164_W2F02JC5-part1 -> ../../sdg1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:54 ata-ST500DM002-1BC142_S2A2X477 -> ../../sdh lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:54 ata-ST500DM002-1BC142_S2A2X477-part1 -> ../../sdh1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:52 ata-WDC_WD20EARX-00PASB0_WD-WMAZA7957124 -> ../../sdj lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:52 ata-WDC_WD20EARX-00PASB0_WD-WMAZA7957124-part1 -> ../../sdj1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 ata-WDC_WD30EZRX-00D8PB0_WD-WCC4N1060268 -> ../../sdb lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 ata-WDC_WD30EZRX-00D8PB0_WD-WCC4N1060268-part1 -> ../../sdb1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:55 ata-WDC_WD30EZRX-00D8PB0_WD-WMC4N0F377PE -> ../../sdk lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:55 ata-WDC_WD30EZRX-00D8PB0_WD-WMC4N0F377PE-part1 -> ../../sdk1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 ata-WDC_WD30EZRX-00SPEB0_WD-WCC4E1038872 -> ../../sdc lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 ata-WDC_WD30EZRX-00SPEB0_WD-WCC4E1038872-part1 -> ../../sdc1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 ata-WDC_WD30PURX-64P6ZY0_WD-WMC4N0M2Z7ED -> ../../sdi lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 ata-WDC_WD30PURX-64P6ZY0_WD-WMC4N0M2Z7ED-part1 -> ../../sdi1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 usb-Sony_Storage_Media_AB2211108174003136-0:0 -> ../../sda lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 usb-Sony_Storage_Media_AB2211108174003136-0:0-part1 -> ../../sda1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x1088186779592314881x -> ../../sdi lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x1088186779592314881x-part1 -> ../../sdi1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x11129719321484480513x -> ../../sdb lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x11129719321484480513x-part1 -> ../../sdb1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:52 wwn-0x12643206672075083777x -> ../../sdj lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:52 wwn-0x12643206672075083777x-part1 -> ../../sdj1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:39 wwn-0x13115951031382986752x -> ../../sdl lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:39 wwn-0x13115951031382986752x-part1 -> ../../sdl1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x17191845585664233473x -> ../../sdc lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x17191845585664233473x-part1 -> ../../sdc1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x17964091599503773696x -> ../../sdf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x17964091599503773696x-part1 -> ../../sdf1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x2270452567899131904x -> ../../sdg lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x2270452567899131904x-part1 -> ../../sdg1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x2557260717170380800x -> ../../sdd lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x2557260717170380800x-part1 -> ../../sdd1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x3640111702948728832x -> ../../sde lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 25 17:22 wwn-0x3640111702948728832x-part1 -> ../../sde1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:55 wwn-0x4059813130583560193x -> ../../sdk lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:55 wwn-0x4059813130583560193x-part1 -> ../../sdk1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 26 09:54 wwn-0x5858697946123489280x -> ../../sdh lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 26 09:54 wwn-0x5858697946123489280x-part1 -> ../../sdh1
  5. I have upgraded from 5.0.5 to 6.3.5 successfully - except my cache drive is missing. (/dev/sdh) Attached is a screen shot of the drive assignment pre-upgrade and after. When I check /dev - the drive is there. I am looking for some guidance to get my cache back in operation. root@HAL_9000:/dev# ls -l total 0 crw------- 1 root root 10, 62 Aug 25 05:28 aer_inject drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1000 Aug 25 05:44 6. I recently rebooted my system and I cannot get the GUI to come up - I only get a blank browser screen. Using UnMenu, I can see my server, all the discs, etc. But I have no operating controls. I have tried rebooting, powering all the way down to restart, but nothing seems to help. Many thanks, SysLog below: Syslog.rtf UnMenu_screen.tiff
  7. Have run the memory test 5 passes now, all OK. Next stop? I have two drives that did the same thing. I have upgrades to Unraid OS 5.0.5 - thinking maybe a compatibility issue between the OS and preclear 1.15 (5B15 and preclear 1.13 worked fine together for the 2TB drives I was using). With this upgrade, I plan to try pre clear again to see if it is that issue. Any other guidance appreciated. SH You can try, but the preclear script does absolutely nothing that the normal reading and writing of files would not do. I would suspect a hardware issue. If you have the same issue with two drives, and memory tests good, suspect the disk-controller, or power supply. (how many drives are attached? What capacity supply? How many 12 volt rails? ) After the upgrade to Unraid OS 5.0.5, I reran preclear 1.15 - success on both drives!! Thanks SH
  8. Config: ANTEC 750W - HCG750 (It has 4 -12 V, 40A rails). Attached is a total of 12 drives total. ASUS PBZ68-V LX motherboard with 6 on-board controller slots (all 6 in use) Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 controller (8 drive capability - 6 in use) When I have been running pre clear, I don't have the array all the way up - just to the point where the config is ok (as I am replacing my dead parity drive). Other places to look, thanks SH

  10. Joe L Thanks for the reply - sorry for my ignorance - how to run a server memory test? Thanks, A drive that returns different values than what was written to it is a real pain in the neck. It could be a bad drive, it could be a poorly regulated power supply line to the drive, it could be a bad disk controller, or even bad memory. I'd start with a memory test of the server, preferably overnight, or at least several passes to make sure it is not falsely leading you to think the disk is bad. Joe L.

  12. Seems the only way I can clean this up is to turn off caching and delete the files on the cache drive, then restart caching. It works for the files on hand, but when more files are deposited on the cache drive, then moved, same issue. Help appreciated from the Appletalk gurus. 13. I have a couple of things attached. 1. Finder window screenshot showing all the way to the mkv file level 2. Telnet screenshot that shows the same file on the cache drive and disk8 SH Cache_SS_Telnet.jpg.zip Cache_SS.jpg.zip
  14. Thanks - I gave it a go, and did not seem to make any difference (syslog attached). I did go in and look at /mnt/disk#/directory ...the files that are on the cache drive are on the array drive - I think. The files names are appended with a * . Not sure what the star means. Further advise appreciated. SH syslog-2012-11-18-1.txt.zip
  15. I am not sure what has happened, but recently Mover had not been cleaning up after moving files from cache into the array. I have rebooted, etc. Not sure if I need to do some clean-up, or what. Please advise. Syslog attached Thanks SH syslog-2012-11-18.txt.zip
  16. SOLVED: Set up new share for apps and downloads, included only cache drive and set USE CACHE DISK: ONLY
  17. All solved. Set up the user share and included in the cache disk as well as setting Use Cache Disk: ONLY
  18. I am having issues (challenges) with the mover function ever since I set up Sick/Sab/Couch on my cache drive. I am running V5b14 Pro. I set the names of the directories on my cache drive as follows: _apps _downloads I used the _ convention so as to be able to see the directories on a Mac. I had also run the UnMenu utility to have mover not move _ directories, though V5 operates a bit differently. The system moved these directories into the array and created user shares. I have attached screen shots of the user share setting for the _apps directory as well as the Share settings. (sorry, no syslog, as it just refreshed and does not have the moving activities of last night). What am I missing in the set up to not have these application directories moved. The moving of data works great. Thanks SH
  19. Joe L, Thanks for the clarity. Now when you say "mark the share as "cache only"', I am not quite clear where to do this in the unRAID interface. How to set it up is not well documented. From the wiki: When the cache disk is not enabled, it will may still be exported and accessed like any other disk share, but any top-level directories will not be folded into user shares. In addition, the mover will be disabled. Why would one want to disable the cache disk? Though each share as a separate control for enabling use of the cache disk, this is a handy way to disable it's use for all shares temporarily. You may want to disable the mover temporarily. From the above I gather: Under the Setting Tab/Share Settings there is a Cache Settings with a Use toggle and a size. I should turn Cache to OFF, but set a size. Under Shares Tab and going into a user share, there is a toggle box for "Use Cache Disk". I assume this sets the use of the cache for the share even when Cache is off above. Only the user share data will be moved into the array from the cache drive. Please confirm if I have it correct Thanks
  20. I am having odd behavior with my cache drive that manifesting itself with files "disappearing" and SABnzbd not being able to write its .ini.bak file. It seems all this happened after a reboot after I expanded the array. Using Finder, and looking at the cache share (or via telnet /mnt/cache/) /cache/ _apps/ couchpotato_v2/ sabnzbd/ sickbeard/ _downloads admin/ Downloads/ logs Now using telnet and looking at /mnt/user/ _apps/ couchpotato_v2/ sabnzbd/ sickbeard/ _downloads admin/ Downloads/ logs sabnzbd.ini sabnzbd.ini.bak Note that the sabnzbd files are under the /mnt/user/. If I dig further into /mnt/user/_downloads/ I find things in /Downloads/ that had disappeared. I have the exclude directories beginning with "_" from being moved from the cache drive via unMenu installed and configured for reboot. It would appear the files got moved into the protected array. I am not sure other that brute force how to but the files back, or have then stay put. Also note the _apps and _downloads show up as user shares via SMB - I did not set them this way. ------ 7/22 update: Seems mover is moving the "_" directories even though I have invoked the pkg to exclude in Unmenu. Syslog attached - any ideas? syslog-2012-07-24.txt.zip
  21. Had originally set up a user share allocated to a single disk, but TM was not consistent in backing up missing the hourly back-ups and getting about once or twice per day. Nothing shows on the syslog when TM misses a back-up on a user share. Once I moved to a disk share, TM has been rock solid - hitting every hourly with no issues.
  22. Running b14. I can not figure out how the AFP security settings to use with TM. I have a couple of machines using TM to back up to unRaid I have dedicated disk export (not a user share) for each TM (set as a TM export). I would like to have the share not visible to the entire network. Everything works great when the security is set to "public". I have created a user with a password and have connected with that set up - no problem. I have tried the disk export as: Security: Secure: User access: Read/write I get this TM error: The backup disk image “/Volumes/disk5-1/Jim’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 30). I have tried the disk export as: Security: Private User access: Read/write I get this TM error: The backup disk is not available. Any advice, as this feature is not well documented. Additionally, running TM, I get a "system created" user share for each sparsebundle with a SMB share. Seems I can turn off the export of the SMB share and TM still works fine.
  23. I went through the same conundrum. If time is no issue (and this will take a long time!), you need 1-3tb(N) and a 500gb(N) cache drive. Realize your data will not be protected through the process. This the least amount of new hardware I can think of. Start by pre-clearing the new 3tb(N). Add to the array. Copy the data from your existing 3tb(1) to the array. Off line, delete the data off the existing 3tb(1) then copy data from one of your 2Tb(1) to it. Pre clear the 2tb(1) you just copied over, add to the array. Copy data from the next 2tb(2) into the array. Pre clear 2tb(2), add to the array. Copy 2tb(3) into the array. Preclear 2tb(3), add to the array. Copy 2tb(4) into the array. Preclear 2tb(4), add to the array. Now copy the data from 3tb(1) into the array. Copy data from 1tb(1) into the array. At this point, all your data should be on the 11tb storage in the array. Pre clear the 1tb(1) and add to the array. At this point, you should have 12tb of storage, 8gb data unprotected. Now pre clear 3tb(1) and 500gb (N) for you parity and cache. Add to the array, start a parity build. You should end with 12tb of protected data storage: Parity: 3tb Data: 1-3tb 4-2tb 1-1tb Cache: 1-500gb Good luck.
  24. Prostuff1, Thank you! I will give this a go and wait for 5rc2 to roll out (not yet posted). 5rc2test seems to still be a bit buggy. SH
  25. Prostuff1, Looks interesting, but configuring a kernel is way outside my comfort zone. I know basic command line stuff in Linux, but that's about it. I have no idea where to start. It seems this error comes up after the system is running a few days. Not sure why or where this IRQ is. But the error only happens when the additional disk controller is installed. I have looked at the BIOS - is the latest. Any step by step guidance on how to configure a kernel appreciated. Or should I try 5rc2 with the 3.0.30 kernel (versus 5b14 with the 3.1.1 kernel)? Thanks SH
