  1. So here's what I'm thinking thus far. I can get a ~$60 break from NewEgg using the "Configurator" and bundling the CPU/MoBo. I'm going to keep most of my current box and just replace these guts. The SSD is for Cache/Apps and the 4TB Red is to be the new Parity disc. Thoughts? Am I heading in a solid direction? 2. Thanks for the clarifications. I will definitely be reviewing the links provided. I've been a fan of PCPartPicker for some time, as well as /R/BuildAPC. I've used them to help with my past 3 builds. I agree about fault tolerance, so I probably will go down the Xeon + ECC path.
  3. I'm reading up on this currently. Is this not supported at all on i5/i7 CPUs, or is there a distinct advantage to running an xeon for this feature? I'm a newb when it comes to most hardware, and completely ignorant of Xeon procs or other server-specific stuff. Thanks.
  4. Hello all. It's been a while since I've thought about doing anything with my unRaid 4.7 box since it's been such a solid and reliable rig. However, I've decided to jump into the new 6.x ecosystem to leverage the app server and VM features. I'm planning on re-using my case, PSU, UAC-SASLP-MV8, and Norco 5x3 bays. I have a few questions re: hardware (CPU/MoBo/RAM). I will primarily be using this for backups and as my Plex server (max 3-4 simultaneous transcodes). However, I would like to learn more about virtualization and be able to expand my usage to include other dockers and potentially several VMs in the near future. [*]Xeon vs. i7 [*]Motherboard - What features can I not live without given my relatively light usage scenario? What are the distinct benefits of using something like a supermicro board vs. a standard consumer desktop board? [*]RAM - I'm thinking 16-32gb for expandablility. Main question is whether fault-tolerance/ECC is a "must" or just personal preference. PS > Is it difficult/risky to get PLEX externally accessible? I know that in 4.7 exposing the default unRaid box to the internet was a big no-no.
  5. Thanks for the tip and reviving this old thread! I've installed Juicessh on my Nexus 7 and it seems to fit the bill nicely. Now, anyone know of the best option for Windows Phone 8? I might try out the Putty Beta that's apparently going on now...
  6. How so? I am running 4.7 so can you point me to some documentation for this process?
  7. Thanks for the info! I already have a spreadsheet tracking the drive info and mapping, so good to go there. I was not aware of the cross-talk potential with SATA cables, so that is seriously beneficial for my re-wiring.
  8. I'm looking to add a second Norco SS-500 to my unRaid box. In doing so, I will be moving the parity drive from a single hot-swap bay into the one of the Norcos. In doing so, I will be swapping out the fan on my existing Norco, cleaning up the cable management, and generally be mucking about in the case and most likely removing all but the MoBo in the process. My question is probably a no-brainer that I missed when doing a preliminary search on these threads, but here it is: [*]When moving a drive(s) from one bay to another, will parity be an issue if I use the same SATA connection on the MoBo and just move it to the new enclosure?
  9. Been a while since I've had to come here for support, as my 4.7 Plus box has been running like a champ 24/7 since May of 2012. Now I'm looking on upgrading to version 5 since it's finally in official release (i think). Mainly this is for >2tb support. I've been looking through threads and still have a few questions. Apologies if I've overlooked an obvious answer due to my impatience.. Questions are: [*]Does my Plus license cover the upgrade, i.e. do I need to purchase a new license once 5.x is installed? [*]Will there be significant labor involved in getting the server back to functioning after the upgrade? I'm running a rather vanilla setup and only have a few plugins installed via unMenu if that counts for anything [*]Are there increased hardware requirements for 5.x? Again: I'm not running anything on the box except for SMB shares
  10. I have just installed an old SSD to use as Cache drive. It shows in unRaid's main menu with the incorrect label. It is being shown as an older, WDAAKS drive that is not in the box. This SSD is an Intel. unMenu identifies it properly. I have run mkreiserfs, but the file system is still showing as: "isw_raid_member". If I select /dev/sdb in unRaid Main > Device as the cache, (despite the label being incorrect), it seems to function. However, I am getting no difference in speeds after setting my "TV" and "MOVIE" shares to use the cache drive. I know nothing about formatting in Linux, and really don't know where to go from here to troubleshoot.
  11. Well it seems I will do fine with the Supermicro card. Thanks for the input. Once again, these forums prove to be a critical resource! Not to gush too much, but man I love the unRaid community for making it possible for a layman like me to get the most out my NAS without overspending or excessively complicating things beyond my means!
  12. What is cache pooling? I do have an SSD in the works for a cache drive ...
  13. Bummer. I should've done some more searching, as I found a SASLP card on NewEgg, Open Box, for $80 and pulled the trigger ~15 minutes after my OP! What are the benefits of the IBM card? Should I rush to cancel my NewEgg order and opt for it instead?
  14. Looking for a SAS card. I understand that the SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 is/was a favorite for unRaid users, but am open to other comparable cards.
  15. I'm about to take the plunge and upgrade to the Plus license. However, my current USB boot drive is blacklisted. I'm unable to find clear instructions on what procedure/best practices to follow when migrating to a new USB. I would like to preserve the array as-is. I'm guessing there is a post on here outlining this in detail, but my poor searching skills can't seem to come up with it. Also, what are the current recommendations for acceptable USB drives?
  16. anyone aware of an app for android that supports Screen commands? I've tried a few that were recommended by my Linux friends, (ConnectBot being the best so far), but with them all I get errors trying to use Screen ("cannot find terminfo entry for 'screen'). using my Nexus for a terminal is ideal, but if I can't initiate or monitor MC sessions or pre clears, then it's kinda not so much. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
  17. Is it possible to hot-swap an internal drive with S.N.A.P? I have unused bays in my Norco SS-500. I am currently using 4.7 Free version, but will be upgrading to PRO as soon as the 5.0 stable is released.
  18. Spoke too soon, perhaps? After last reboot I seem to be up and running. Writing to share w/ parity and no cache drive @ ~50 MB/s. Copying FROM share to Win7 PC @ ~75 MB/s. Hopefully this isn't going to be an ongoing issue.
  19. I've received my Intel PRO1000 GT NIC and installed. I am still not getting gigabit speeds. Transfers are ~12-13 MB/s. Ethtool shows speed as 1000 Mb/s. I've previously replaced the cabling with Cat6 to the wall. My Win7 PC can transfer from another network share at ~80 MB/s, so I don't think it is the switch. Truthfully though, I'm clueless about troubleshooting this. My upstairs roomate owns the switch and has the network setup from there. I can have him test it to make sure it's not on his end, but I need to know what to have him check. Can specific ports be bad or otherwise influence the speed independent of other, properly working ports? Any advice on troubleshooting methodology from here would be appreciated.
  20. Curious how you made out with this. I'm about to pick up a PWLA8391GTBLK in the next couple of days.
  21. So I'm ready to put in a new NIC. I'm guessing from reading that an Intel would be the best bet. My question is: Pro1000GT? Also, when installing, what hoops will I have to jump through to get this up and running? Or will unRaid recognize the new card out of the box?
  22. Alright, so,.. apologies for wasting time here with my foolishness... but have a laugh at my expense! Turns out that my UPS only provides battery backup to HALF of the outlets! I need to learn to not freak out and look at the most rudimentary steps first when these things happen! On the plus side, I very much appreciate Joe L.'s test methodology. I now am confident that APCUPSD is properly shutting down the array (provided I plug it in to the proper outlets!). On a side note, I did observe that the UPS is not shut off after the server powers down (the lamp remained on). No worries, as all I am ultimately concerned about is a protected array. Thanks for your help, yet again, unRaid community!
