  1. I wanted to post an update that I resolved my problem with the MV8. Summary: It was my fault - I did not fully understand SAS/Expander/Backplane connections. A supermicro technician educated me and now unRAID is working awesome! My post here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=51319.0 Thank you for all the assistance.
  2. It doesn't seem like it or at least I'm not understanding how it works on GitHub's side - during installation, the status just looks like it's successful, but it doesn't show up in Settings to be configured. Has anyone else tried it on 6.2rc5 - maybe it's just me. -Update- Disregard, I guess I needed to restart my unRAID server. After it came back up, all the plugins reported in.
  3. Thanks for this PhAzE - I just wanted to ask if there were problems with the links today. I have a fresh install and am trying to get some of the apps installed. I was only able to get nzbget to stick - everything else seems to not be there in the Settings area? plugin: installing: https://github.com/PhAzE-Variance/unRAID/raw/master/Plugins/Headphones.plg plugin: downloading https://github.com/PhAzE-Variance/unRAID/raw/master/Plugins/Headphones.plg plugin: downloading: https://github.com/PhAzE-Variance/unRAID/raw/master/Plugins/Headphones.plg ... done Installing Headphones plugin Checking for current bundle files Control file: Found correct version Dependency file: Found wrong version, deleting Check OK! 4. Supermicro support has asked me to load windows and see if the same problems are occurring as their best guess is that the OS is not properly loading the drivers for the secondary MV8 card. I'll report back my result once I have Windows Server loaded.
  5. Thank you for offering a response to this issue. I am in contact with Supermicro and they had me troubleshoot a few things. One of the troubleshooting step was to remove all drives to see if the MV8 would cause issues booting up. The result of this test was that UnRAID did come up without any problem (as far as i can tell). The WebGUI was accessible and responsive. This is why I do not think it is a hardware issue (the cards or motherboard), it may be a hard drive problem? I'll continue to troubleshoot with Supermicro as well to see if it leads to anything else. Thanks! -update- I am attaching a second syslog. This syslog was pulled from the WebGUI. I am dual booting with mv8 and 4 hdd that are attached. UnRAID does not see the drive and the WebGUI took a while to pull up. I'm hoping this syslog will be able to pinpoint some problems. -update- also including diagnostics tower-syslog-20160829-1824.zip tower-diagnostics-20160829-1838.zip
  6. Sorry, I have to disagree. A reverse proxy acts as an intermediary between the client and the web application you're accessing. It adds an additional layer between the client and the web application. A reverse proxy (in the scenario of using it to expose applications to the Internet) is available on the internet so generally anyone (unless you are going to set some really tight firewall rules) who knows the url will have access to that application. Although setting additional security like SSL (which just encrypts client to server) it is still directly connected to the web. In this case you are also going to be relying on the security system of each application for access. Much of the applications we all use (in a home server scenario) have different levels of maturity when it comes to their vulnerability to attack. In addition many of these applications authors advise (such as unRAID) not to expose their interfaces directly to the Internet. In contrast, a VPN has an additional layer of security as a client has to first authenticate itself with a server before a user has access to the VPN. If you therefore trust users of your LAN (which most people I know who use unRAID in a home setting would) you can even leave the applications unsecured by userids and passwords) as the security is managed by the VPN server. I would also add that if there are vulnerabilities I would be more confident of the ongoing security of OpenVPN (being a widely used enterprise technology) and exploits being patched than the exploits being found, patched etc in many of these applications we all use. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I am not in disagreement with what you are telling users as we both acknowledge that the weakest link here are the applications security controls of each application-in this case UnRAID. For the intent of the OP's request for https; it is possible. If the need was for just accessing ones server-vpn would be better for end to end. With that said I recant what I typed about openvpn not being safer than RP. For clarity: my previous statement about openvpn being any more safer; the post was concentrated on the subject of encryption. Strong traffic encryption could be had with both vpn and ssl offloading because they both can use the same type of encryption. The problem then exists after the handshake (in rp-ssl offload), in which case vpn is the better choice if you do not have the need for it to be public facing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  7. While i wholeheartedly agree with the fact that you shouldn't expose your server to the public domain-i respectfully disagree that using openVpn is any more safer than a reverse-proxy server with a proper tls certificate handling encryption of authentication and traffic. As i understand it - you have 2 methods of encryption with openVPN, a preshared secret or a tls/ssl-vpn method. The tls/ssl method is much like the reverse proxy with a proper tls/ssl certificate. There is specific uses for each of these types and I use both. I plan on having many web servers/services so it would be in my interest to use the latter. I won't get into it more than this as it is beyond the scope of the OPs question. I would not recommend doing either if you are unclear on the security risks or methods for mitigation . 8. This product requires a bit tinkering. You could just load a linux VM and do a basic reverse proxy w/ SSL offloading to your storage server. Just another thought.
  9. I wanted to give an update as well as provide a log so I could get some help. It took me a while to figure out to get the log exported. -I found that when I had both my MV8s installed, even though one did not have RAID mode disabled - it still showed both adapter as JBOD. Luckily I noticed it when I went to trying single cards. -Both cards are now properly flashed to 3.0.0.21 with RAID5/RAID FEATURE disabled. Both cards settings also matched. -I cleared the CMOS on motherboard and started enabling/disabling different features to see if it worked -------Still had problems after the above steps, but UnRAID did load up to the prompt once the MV8s were flashed and reconfigured----- At this point, I am still having trouble with UnRAID: 1. Gives me logon prompt (3/4 times) 2. WebGUI never comes up 3. I do not see any disks connected other than USB when I run command to see what disks are available I am at a loss and hope that one of you guys catch something in the log to help me along with this issue. Thanks! syslog.txt
  10. These controllers are PCIe 1.0, so it shouldn't make any different what gen slot they're in, they'll always run at 1.0. The SASLP is one of the most used controllers with unRAID, only other thing I can think of is to look for bios updates, for the board and the cards. You could also try v6.2, it uses a newer kernel with newer drivers, it can make a difference. Good suggestion Johnnie. I was able to get the random stalls to keep going until login prompt with the latest RC4 for 6.2. Once it loaded, i was only able to see the drives from the LSI (9 drives) - while the other 9 that were on the dual MV8 did not appear. I'm in the process of trying to figure out what the deal is with the MV8s. Questions I wanted to ask you all: 1) Can a bad hard drive produce a kernel panic, halting the booting/loading of UnRAID process? 2) Can bad memory do this as well (i'm in the process of testing all the memories) 3) Any suggestion on the MV8 to troubleshoot it further? I'm thinking of reflashing it - but a bit hesitant since they work individually, just not together. Thanks! P.S. I'll post a diagnostic zip file once I get my memory testing completed. -update- Answer 2: all my memory passed after I had reseated them. But it was bad at first and the processes did not stall or stopped. Answer 3: i went ahead and reflashed both cards individually and matched up configs. For some reason if both cards are installed, but one card had RAID function on, during card initialization period - it does not show that RAID was on on the card(s).
  11. Wombat, is it necessary to flash .21 again if its already on .21 ? I bought a few cards and it seems like its already on .21 with jbod mode enabled, but im having issues with UnRAID detecting the drives. The cards are detecting the hdd during boot and i have int 13 disabled.
  12. Itimpi, This was one of the first things I did was ctrl+c for lsi and ctrl+m for mv8 to disable raid, shorten the detection timing to 10 seconds, and disable int 13. The drives are detected by the controllers, the problem exists after UnRAID booting process starts and during drive detection period within UnRAID. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  13. Johnnie, Yup. Found that out when i placed a 3TB and only saw 2.2. Not a problem, i just wont put anything past 2TB on the LSI. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.

I am not new to computers and what you said was what I had understood, so it was odd when it wouldn't work under both pci 1/2. I will try new kernel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  15. Thank you both for your suggestions. It helped with diagnosing. Here's what I found out and I could use further help. I had placed 1xMV8 in a pci 1.0 x4 slot, while the other one was in a pci 2.0 x4 slot. Testing with each one by itself - Unraid came up just fine. Testing both cards in those slots, bombed UnRAID. I fixed this problem by moving the PCI 1.0 to a PCI 2.0 x8 slot instead. Question 1: Is there a problem with running the two cards on different types of PCI version? After getting the raid cards & onboard LSI reflashed raid to work with UNRAID, but no HDD - i started populating the HDDs. I filled up the LSI with all HDDs, while keeping the MV8's empty - this worked fine. All drives came up and UnRaid also came up. I started populating HDDs to the two MV8s and this is where it started having problems. Through some trial and error with swapping the hdds (keeping the same 2 hdds for control) - I started going 2x2 slots to see if the backplane was the problem. The two drives worked on all slots - so that ruled out backplane. I started looking at the drives and I think this is where the next issue is, but am unable to come up with an answer. I have a Toshiba 5TB 7.2k 128MB cache and a 4TB WD RED. Whenever both (or each) of these are populated into the MV8s, UNRAID would crash immediately during the checking of the drives (to see if they exists phase?) The error is in my screenshot, exactly as the same error i received when I had posted my OP. Question 2: Are there any known problems with the latest stable release that might affect these drives? Question 3: Am I doing something wrong or misconfiguring something that may contribute to this problem?
  16. Thanks for your reply. It is my understanding that we have lots of users who uses these cards and has had no issue. It was one of the primary motivator of why I went with this model. I will try unplugging the cards tomorrow and see if that bypasses it. In the interim, if anyone has clues or had ran into this-I could use your feedback. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  17. Hello All, Long time lurker, first time [finally] have the equipment to run this. Before making a full purchase, i wanted to do a dry run and I am having lots of problems. I got the USB stick to boot It worked the first few times I booted up I configured some stuff in the WebGUI and now it's fudging up badly I then just formatted the USB and started over, but it seems that didn't help at all. I took all my HDD out and just boot UNRAID usb stick - it's still doing some type of panic because I can't seem to get access via Telnet OR webgui. I noticed when I tried accessing the WebGUI once the login prompt comes up, the screen displays a bunch of crap: [<ffffffffffff814685ff>] ? ata_eh_reset+0x475/0xa67 and a bunch of other services. I don't quite know how to get the log for you since I can't seem to access it at all. Please advise this newbie. -update- Screenshot via ipmi interface -update- Specs -update- Include syslog.txt SuperMicro x8dtl-3f 36bay chassis (LSI Firmware Update to 1.33 P21) 48GB DDR3 ECC memory 1x5TB drive populated (for testing, will have a variety of 20 drives if I can get it to work) 2xAOC-SASLP-MV8 (no firmware modification) -Final Update---> Resolved! First off, let me begin with... I'm an ignorant MF! I thought it would be easy plug and play, but with servers and raid controls and expanders involved - I clearly did not understand the concept before attempting at this. Thanks to a gentleman at Supermicro (DL) for his 15 minute call and educating me on Expanders and raid requirements (in my native language - not english). I initially had installed my cards in and hooked up all the mini-sas connectors to every port on the backplane. I did not realize that my server had an expander backplane and it only required 1xMiniSas connector on the front (24-bay) and 1x to the rear (12-bay) to be connected to 2 of my cards. I had initially had all 3 of my front expander backplane sas connection hooked to two of the MV8 - which worked fine, but as soon as I had the third/fourth connection from the rear backplane expander - it fudged it up inside of unRAID. With the knowledge, I unhooked everything and connected one sas connection from one h310 sas-port to the front backplane. I then did the same to the rear backplane on a separate H310. The technician said I could connect both to one card; however, the H310 only supports up to 32 devices and I would not be able to see my full 36. After doing so - I booted the server up and no hangs or crash. Everything seems to be running perfectly! I did not test with the MV8s, but I imagine it was due to my lack of knowledge is why it did not work correctly. Thank you all for your help with this. Note: I did reflash the H310s and placed tape over the B5 and B6 pins. syslog.txt
  18. Thanks Fireball3. I will give it a go with the 6/ir. I have a bunch of 2TBs laying around, so not too worried about the 2.2+s yet. I had originally bought a few of the aoc-saslvp-mv8s, so i may move to that when I can get a better deal on a norco 4224 case. As far as these firmware goes, it is dependent on the manufacturers like LSI, right?
  19. I just inherited a r710 with 8bays with a perc 6/i. I was wondering if anyone has had good luck with flashing it back to LSI and it working with unraid, yet? Did a search but only found 6/ir amd some people abandoning the 6/i projects. In preparation for it not working, i do have a 6/ir i got off ebay for cheap. I am willing to try and get the 6/i tested - but i would meed exact instructions on what I should do. Thanks!
  20. Johnm, On your Goliath build -- you recommended 1xIBM m1015 card and 2x Supermicro 8Port. If the m1015 cards are cheaper on ebay, would there not be a reason to just do 3x IBM m1015 cards for better parity? Also, which Xeon would you suggest for a bit more umph but average TDP to the i3-2100/2100T ?
  21. @John I totally respect and value the constructive criticism and feedback. I will take no offense to it as I am not too familiar with it all yet so I do appreciate all the help. Looking at your Atlas build -- I may end up following you. In regards to the 80Gbs -- I will see if I can killdisk/dban it and get a hold of Raj. Thanks! I will make the purchase for the board and start building. Fair price you think for that board?
  22. Hi Drealit Hehe -- I totally would and will; however, the drives are or were from old workstations at work. Policies dictates me from selling them . I merely will use them as extra storage / learning experience with upgrading drives, etc.. Can you guys confirm that this is the correct board on Superbiiz for me? Newegg shows it @ 200 bucks and Superbiiz 30 dollars lower. I can't find a site with a price trend on it. http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=MB-X9SCM-F Thanks for the feedbacks.
  23. @C3 I would sell them; however, due to them having sensitive data on it, I cannot and will either have to use them until I upgrade drive by drive or properly dispose of them. Otherwise I would . If I do have some spare money left -- I will get a 4TB and make that the parity instead and start to build the unit with 4TB. @Johnn Part of my modification is to have both sides of the tower open. The room for which it will be in is relatively cool (in the basement, wide open) and I will only have it on 4-6 hours at night when i'm watching the movies. Once I can get the Norco case and replace half the drives in a few months, I will actually take all the 80GBs offline and properly dispose of them. Thanks both of you for the suggestions.
  24. Hi Everyone, I have been researching the last few months on unRAID and I think I am ready to pull the trigger. I had posted one thread a few days ago asking for help on a MB; however, looking at it... all the MB that were cheap did not fall within what I wanted in terms of future proofing. My primary use for this would be storage of Media and transcoding HD Video/Audio. Let me break this down and I would love to hear comments and suggestions if anyone has any for me. ===============Preliminary Plan======================================= Use an old case (currently holds 8 HDD, but i'm going to modify it to fit 14) and upgrade later to the 4U Norco 4224. PSU will also be upgrade later also (currently 600W). Right now I the following HDD: 1x2TB Seagate 7.2K Sata III 2x1TB Seagate 7.2K Sata II 10x80GB WD Black 10K Sata II My plan is to use the 2TB as Parity, 80GB as Cache -- that would leave me with 2.47TB of storage. I plan on buying the following parts: Mobo: Supermicro X9SCM-F-O LGA1155 ($167.99 on Superbiiz -- I think it's the correct model) CPU: Core i3-2100T ($134 on NewEgg) SATA Card: AOC-SASLP-MV8 8Port SAS/SATA Card ($102 on Superbiiz) Memory: Kingston KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G (2x4GB) ($62 on Superbiiz) LSI/3Ware 1.0M forward break-out cable x2 ($13 on Superbiiz) Total upfront cost of parts + license = $642 ===============Below info will be filled out as soon as I have my build together================= OS at time of building: CPU: Motherboard: RAM: Case: Drive Cage(s): Power Supply: SATA Expansion Card(s): Cables: Fans: Parity Drive: Data Drives: Cache Drive: Total Drive Capacity: Primary Use: Media streaming / HD Transcoding Likes: Dislikes: Add Ons Used: Future Plans: Norco 4224 + 8Port SAS/SATA Addon Card + Quiet Cooling Fans Boot (peak): Idle (avg): Active (avg): Light use (avg): Closing comments
  25. Rather not take my chances. Thanks for the double checking. I'll look for another one.
