Setup for new user

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

I am thinking through a new setup (first time user) that I will be building over the next week or two, just waiting on a last few physical pieces to arrive. I thought I would post here ahead of time to get some thoughts on what I am trying to accomplish before I dive in.

Current State:

Family tells me what they want to watch, I manually download through seed box and we watch with Plex server on my main PC pointing to the seed box. When the seed box gets full, I move older movies/TV shows to my main PC, so in essence I have two plex libraries and everything is manually added/moved. I also have games/audiobooks etc. Everything is done through private trackers and space has become a major issue in addition to the major manual effort. For example, if I want to install a game on my wife’s machine it goes – download to seed box, FTP it to main pc, copy to usb drive, copy to new machine, install.

Goals:

·         Move plex server to a dedicated machine

·         NAS with Unraid for:

              o   Media library

o   Home computer backups (4 or 5 PC’s in the house)

o   Moving data (like game torrents) between NAS and other computers

              o   long-term seeding through VPN

·         Automate as much as possible

Hardware:

·         Paid Seed box (seedhost.eu) using Rutorrent

·         Homemade NAS with unraid

·         Prebuilt HP 290 PC for Plex Server/transcoding with Ubuntu

·         My main pc (only listed here for remote access purposes)

Knowledge:

·         Never used an OS outside of windows so this will be quite aggravating and fun at the same time!

·         Never used any of the other applications like Radarr or OMBI

What I am currently thinking:

This is where I can use some help clearing up my thoughts on proper setup

Media watching:

·         Dedicated plex machine with ubuntu points towards NAS as media library

·         Use OMBI to allow family to request TV/Movies. This feed requests to Radarr/Sonarr installed on my seed box which goes and finds the needed torrent – (I assume I can specify which private trackers to use and do so without blowing up ratio?)

·         Seed box auto downloads the file

·         The media gets auto copied from seed box to appropriate NAS media folders (which software does this)

·         Plex auto updates library so it is visible to users

Seeding:

·         Is there a way to auto transfer a torrent from my seed box to the NAS for long term seeding based on one of the following factors?

              o   Tag – IE Ebook/Audiobook

o   Age – has been seeded for X days on my seed box

o   Tracker – I want any torrent from X tracker to seed from my NAS instead of the seed box

·   So, in other words, if I download a torrent that I tag as an Ebook on my seed box I want it to auto copy to the NAS and seed through a VPN docker on the NAS instead of my seed box. Or if I download a torrent from X tracker (regardless of tag type) to my seed box I want it auto copied to my NAS and seeded through a VPN docker on the NAS instead of the seed box.

Any other software, setup changes or thoughts I should consider before I build this out? Anyone have a similar needs that can offer tips/advice?

Thank you.

You can run all these applications directly on your Unraid server as Dockers.
