I've gone and done it: Ordered unRAID server components

Featured Replies

Hi all

After doing some reading here and also asking some questions I finally got around to ordering all the components for my server:

Case: Rebel 12 Economy

MB:Supermicro C2SEA

CPU: Celeron 430

RAM: Kingston ValuRAM 2x2GB ( know its overkill but you never know... :) )

HD: 5x WD20EARS ordered on two different occasions

Flash Drive: Super Talent USB Memory, 8GB Pico Mini

Basically the setup is a deviant of Rajas suggested 20 drive beast. Thats also why I bought the large case and the MB. That way I think I have good expandability. I plan to add drives, drive cages and SATA cards as needed. Also increases the WAF since I spend money over a longer stretch! :)

And now a question:

I have a Thermaltake TR2 RX 450 Watt PSU which claims to have dual 12V rails. I dont know whether this is true or not, but the main question is, is this PSU sufficient to power the above components? I know once I get more HDs I will need to get a bigger PSU, but again WAF plays a role. :)

Additionally I have some other questions:

1. Any particular suggestions on VERY quiet 140mm fans to put in the front and one in the back?

2. Could I mount a fanless CPU cooler on the CPU and if yes, suggestions?

3. Would a fan control module make sense? Any experiences with these would be greatly appreciated. :)

4. Am I forgetting anything? Apart from some additional SATA cables. :)

Soon as I start building etc. I will try a post some pics.

The 5 disks will draw 2 amps each when spinning up.  Add to that another 5 amps or so for the motherboard, fans, etc.

15 Amps will probably be handled fine by your power supply.  (almost always, there is only 1 of the 12 volt rails that powers all the disks, fans, and the motherboard.  The second 12 volt rail is usually reserved for the CPUs. (third for PCIe video cards)  Since many 12Volt rails are rated at 18Amps, you might have capacity for 1 more disk, but then you are at the limit of the supply.

These are actual specs for that power supply Thermaltake TR2 RX 450 Watt PSU, it looks to be very borderline at 15 Amps. They list the first 12V line at 14Amps, and their second 12V line 15Amps. I'm not sure which 12V line powers the HDDs, it could be the lesser 14Amp line.

I would replace that PSU as soon as possible with a solid single rail 12V PSU.

1. Any particular suggestions on VERY quiet 140mm fans to put in the front and one in the back?

I haven't been using them long so I can't speak to their reliability, but so far I've been impressed with Noctua NF-P14 FLX fans.  I can't even hear them on my main PC on the fastest setting.  They come with adapters (3-pin connector with a resistor wired in series to knock the voltage down) so you can pick from 3 speeds.  Also included are rubber standoffs for vibration, though I will caution you that the standoffs can rip during installation if you're not careful.  They're spendy, so shop around and you can usually find a decent deal.  If you're okay with the 120mm version I was able to find 2 and 3 packs on Amazon which offered a decent savings.

For my unraid server I went with the stock fans on the CM590/CM4-in-3 and clipped the power leads to the LEDs so they wouldn't light up.  Plenty quiet for me and no extra expense.

Case: Rebel 12 Economy

You are part of the Rebel Alliance! Post pics during and/or after the build, if you can.

Cheers,

Neil.

@Brit: Thanks for the info. I will see and maybe just hook up 3 drives for now. Then with the next batch of drives also add a bigger PSU.

@rich.bingham: thanks for the suggestion. I will look into those here in Switzerland.

@neilt0: PROUD TO BE A PART OF THE REBEL ALLIANCE. :D Will post pics and comments as soon as all the parts arrive and I have time to put it together.
