flixxx
Hello, I just got my hands on an old server and wondering if it's worth to move my existing Core i5-3570k unraid server to it or continue my research to buy something newer? It's primary use is Plex with h264 streams to friends and family but ideally I'd like to move to h265/4K content. The server is a HP Proliant DL380P Gen8. It's fitted with a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 (2.6 GHz/8-core/20MB/8.0GT) processor(I can add a second processor) 64 GB of ram At first glance, it seems like a no brainer but passmark may be telling a different story (especially from a single thread rating - not sure how relevant this is) and i'm not sure if it's made for my usage How will this perform for my needs? Has processors technology moved in the direction that favors streams with cheaper motherboard/processors combinations? Quote Link to comment
minuzle
I'm no specialist but the BUS speed is faster on the Xeon, more cores / threads, more memory bandwidth, quad channel vs dual channel. If you added a second cpu I would imagine it would be better overall. I just went to dual e5-2690v2 and I'm completely happy with the performance. Quote Link to comment
